I'd like to generate some maps for dominions. In particular I'd like to recreate the awesome Illuria map from the Warlords game series, but there are a few others I'd like to have a go at too. So I'm looking around at various fantasy strategy games trying to find an editor that does the following: 1. Makes maps that are 'zoomed out' enough to work for dom3, or can at least look zoomed out and abstract 2. Makes maps that aren't too heavy with the colour, because that would make it impossible to see the dom3 fort and flags sprites over the top 3. Allows me to actually export the damn map. Most in game map editors seem to generate files that can only be read by the game. Does anyone know of any? Think back to old SSI games, to warcraft clones, to warlords, age of wonders, MoM ripoffs,... I will track down the game, I just need to know which ones to investigate. If it comes down to it, I can probably stomach constructing a map out of screengrabs from ingame and stitching them back together, resized. But I think to be worthwhile the editor has to meet 2 of the above 3 points. There must be something out there, right? |

You *may* be able to overcome pt 2 in gimp / photoshop, just by reducing the contrast and saturation. You could maybe sepia-ify the map or something too. |

A month or two ago I stumbled across this map by Foodstamp. Shrap thread - http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//showthread.php?t=32757 Image of Map - http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:mountainpasses Haven't (yet) tried creating a map with AoW2 myself, but given someone else has already used it to create one, it seems it is possible. In that same thread, Honey-suprememasterofallthatisdominionsespeciallyifitinvolvescomingupwithideasfornewmodnationsandideasforhowtouseskrattisasthugsthatbailzwilllaterstealfromme -Badger also mentions Lords of Magic as having a map editor. But be advised this might not be true, and your testicles will be at risk if you blindly follow this advice. |

There was this dnd map editor that you got with a cd. (I cannot recall names) I think computers are now finally fast enough for it to work at a reasonable speed. (The idiots drew all the map icons from least visible to visible. And recalculated everything. Every action you took). I can't recall the quality. There is also the dungeonmap making program called dundjinni, do not know if it makes overland maps. Perhaps one of the other products the developers made does that. It honestly isn't much more work to use graphics ripped from Cradle of Dominions than it is to use a map editor. Besides wraparounds are far easier by hand unless you have a game that likes wraparounds too! |

Well not exactly an impressive memory feat. HB was only known for two things AFAIK. 1. Making a load of mod natons that were literally unplayable (no files or anything, just some sprites and random fluff words). 2. Going nuts on Bailz after Bailz mentioned using Skratti's as thugs in one of his guuides, which HB was trying to copyright as his own idea that Bailz stole from him. (without giving him credit). Which is about as dumb as trying to copyright something like using a big bless for Jag Warriors, or an E/N bless for sacred Giants. |

Do you have any clever process, or are you literally copying and pasting with a bit of hacking around? Because people do like them kinda maps. I won't be making any wraparounds, I'm trying to recreate specific maps in a single format - Illuria, the Warhammer map etc without messing around with further graphical editing. |

Yes, copying and pasting, but I have my maps layered so it's pretty easy, get them from here: http://koti.kapsi.fi/elmokki/dom3/maps/maps.zip |

So I will check out Lords of Magic. Google tells me it does indeed have a map editor. The Age of Wonders series has a lovely map editor but it's not ideal for dom3 really and more importantly I have no idea how to get the actual map graphic out of the game. I mean there's always screenshot and paste methods, but I was hoping for something a little less mind numbing. |

While they might be too colorful for your purpose, I made the last two maps with the Battle for Wesnoth editor. I then used the snipping tool (the built in "picture taker" in windows) and did after editing, borders etc with photoshop. |

There's a couple of maps made with the age of wonders editor but I have no idea how they got the complete map image out of it, unless they did it tediously by taking many screenshots of the different parts of the map and sticking them together. Lords of magic certainly has a map editor but again I'm not sure how you'd get images out of it. Also it might be a pain to get running on modern systems, but that's a separate issue. |

Cutting and pasting the parts of a map into one complete map isn't really that painful. Not if you compare it to the time it takes to plan, draw, map out provinces, dot provinces, tag provinces and start provinces and what not. It takes about five minutes if you use the snipping tool and a decent program that can handle layers. Maybe 10 minutes if you've got a huge map with four or more pieces to fit together. Making a map takes hours, this is nothing. |
