So, we all know a bunch of items that are really good for various purposes - frost/firebrands, rainbow armor, amulet of luck, gold shield, various boosters etc. But what are some magic items that you like that doesn't seem to be that popular? Or for that matter, what do you have as a backup alternative when you can't access or afford your primary pick? Right now I'm playing LA Ctis and have just gotten access to bane lords, but don't know what weapon I should make since I can't afford fire brands and can't access frost brands, and snake bladder sticks don't seem to work well together with poison slingers... Personally I must say I find quite few mentions of the fire in a jar, but whether that's because other people don't like it as much as I or because it's so obviously awesome I don't know, but for any nation with lots of low-level fire mages I love having a half-dozen or dozen of these, because they just cost 3 gems (or just 1 gem for MA Ulm!) and will turn a F1 useless Firedarter into a F2 useful Fireballer, by casting phoenix fire. Being able to move them around via laboratories means I can get a lot more oomph where I need it the most. And when I don't need them to buff F1's, I can always give them to my Flame Arrow casters to save a few gems - I find they pay back their cost at least three times over. Or ten times, with Ulm. |

LA Mictlan can't access Frost Brands, has poison slingers? You mistyped C'tis or what? |

Anything that produce temp gen tend to be awesome, and it's still not very well known. Water Lens for example. The items that add Map Move are often very good in practice, and not only the flying boot. MM2 starets can actually go somewhere ! |

I find Fire in a Jar to be even more clutch, since it enables Phoenix Power (with the free gem) -> Fireball spam. |

One weapon I really like for making really cheap light thugs for, say, province defence against real thugs, is the Flesheater. At +4 att, 14 damage it's decent enough, but the chest wound is a nice bonus against other thugs, and what's more, and not mentioned in the description of the item, is that it gives Berserk +3. I know in Dom 3 you could even put two of them on the same unit, and the Berserk stacked so while the dual-wield penalty ate up the inherent +4, you still gained +6 from berserk. Don't know if that still works though, and regardless it might usually be more worth it to have two different units regardless. And they just cost 5 slaves, so they're really, really cheap. If one fears opponent's thugs or a light SC, especially those who rely on Awe/Fear for defence, putting a few of these on a few cheap chassis can be really worth it. |

I get huge use out of fire in a jar for fire elemental spam. You want reliable, every-battle, first-turn or second turn elemental waves, not trickles, so you bring a bunch of mages with jar with army, reliable, easy, simple. They can even make their own jars. With hammer, it's worth just having a hammer making nothing but jars for a game. With ulms, it's a no brainer, even if all you're using it for is fireball to add some non-earth meld battlemagic to armies pre magma eruption, or to add some range to magma erupts, or to reduce the gem burden on a 2F smith flaming arrows caster. |

I'm playing EA Ulm in my first game and getting huge mileage out of fire in a jar. It makes each and every F1 smith or shaman into a gem-free fireball slinger with phoenix power. That's especially nice because the consistent evocation damage means you don't have to waste so much fatigue on your valuable E2's and E3's casting bladewind to get evo damage. |

Something could be done with Medallions of Vengeance (F1) and assassins/ flying commanders set to attack/rear, I think. Especially if you could forge them for 1 Fire gem (say, Ulm). Of course, you still need to recruit the suicidal kamikaze unit - but from what I remember, the damage from the explosion is pretty significant. It's a significant aura and can slay or heavily hurt heavy infantry. Might be more of a way to annoy/'troll' your opponent, but still, worth a try? |

If it is the same explosion as phoenix pyre, its 50 AP damage, 10 squares (per the manual). I imagine it would be a good deterrent for a rush against someone like Abysia. Its cheap/safe/easy to throw some indy commanders with the medallion in the front line against a bless rush. Would have to get to const4 early though, which may be unrealistic unless its part of your initial strategy. |
