Why you should not use returning; Some stats on it

I have done 50 cast of returning, with aboleths (void sanity 5, astral skill 2 to 4). It was in a positive dominion province and all scale were neutral.

41 cast ended up without hitch, 9 cast ended up with lost in space and time commander.

On the 9 lost commanders :
* one returned after three void being attacks. +5 insanity.
* one returned without attack. +5 insanity.
* two returned without attack but feeble minded. One gained 5 insanity, the other 32.
* three were killed, two by horror attacks (mind slime horror, horror), and one by a Greater Otherness
* one returned without attack, with +1S and +95 (!) insanity
* one returned after a float cat attack, with +1 S and +28 insanity

All the survivor reappared in the capital, which was my only province.

I didn't recorded the amount of time they were lost in time ; about three to seven turn apparently.

My conclusion is that you should never use Returning for anything precious, except if it's your only hope to get him alive. You have 10% odds of very bad thing happening, especially if you have something less sturdy than an aboleth to begin with.

That is quite annoying. I frankly have no idea why Illwinter felt returning needed a nerf. It's made Astral Corruption radically more powerful.

I thought returning wouldn't be usable during horror attacks anyway, since they're assassinations and mages will go offscript?

Thanks for the analysis Ohlmann, I figured the risk was something rather high after I tried using my S9 Oracle as a teleporting magic-duelling/raiding returner in a few MPs.

I think it took about 20 turns to come back once - he was pretty insane; losing another on the first jump was the final straw....

Well that sucks. it was quite a nice spell.
[Maerlande] Because it was a smart idea. Soyweiser was right.

That's quite painful indeed. I see little reason to ruin such a spell. Might as well just remove it instead of making such a random thing.

do the same effects apply to mages affected by ritual of returning? I mean I assume it just uses the same effect but you never know.

The lost in space and time effect is cool, but it really shouldn't be a 10% occurrence on a spell.

It would be much better if the chance was something more around 1-2%. Still a possibility, but a low enough chance that you'd be willing to risk using the spell given the potential benefits. You wouldn't throw it around haphazardly (i.e. use an oracle as a teleporting raider), but for big stuff like master enslave it would be worthwhile even with the risk.

I personally like using teleport ritual+magic duel+returning if some wise guy sticks a low level astral mage on his army stack to prevent mind hunts.
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your tongue. You didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

You could still do that, you'd just need to use a disposable mage...

That disposable mage needs to be S3 or S1 with heavy boosters. Not sure I'd be quick to call that disposable, but I guess YMMV.

It's mainly for the R'lyehs and they have built in void sanity. Arco usually doesn't care due to healers.

I tested with void sanity commander, and *still* it's a very bad idea.

Note that arco priestess cannot heal "eaten by an horror".

Sounds like a bug to me.
