Apparently there are lots and lots of strategies for LA Jomon involving the use of Tengu, but compared to Shinuyama and, specially, Yomi, they are probably the ones who least need them. They have quite cheap and capable infantry, and some pretty nice sacred troops. Shinuyama, by the other hand, have a mostly mediocre army with some pretty strong, not capital bond units, but so costly (in both resources and gold) to the point of amassing them being quite hard. Yomi, well... is in ruins, with an expensive, cannibalistic army that becomes rather easy to deal with by mid game, usually then resorting to SCing their Dai Oni. With that said, I believe Shinuyama and Yomi would benefit far more from (read: desperately need) the use of Tengu than Jomon. And yet, apparently there are not a whole lot of strategies involving flying rascals for them. First off, lets take a quick peak at the spells, shall we? Summon Karasu Tengu (Conj 2, A1N1, 3 nature gems) will net you 3 Karasu Tengu, the strongest of the summon-able Tengu warriors. Sacred, flying, pretty good stats (with the exception of protection, being 4, but it is better than in Dominions 3, in which it was 0), specially attack and defense. Flying, Map Movement 3, can throw a single Lightning Strike at the range of 30, which is a magic weapon. They are no Aztec themed demons, but they seem good enough for their cost. Summon Konoha Tengu (Conj 3, A1E1, 5 air gems) will bring you 5 (or more!) Konoha Tengu, inferior to their Karasu counterparts, but this summoning have the potential to be more efficient if you do it with a strong A mage (or/and in a special site that amplifies conjurations), but by the simple fact it bring more sacreds faster is already superior to Karasu Tengu. Unless, of course, you're saving air gems for... Contact Dai Tengu (Conj 5, A2E1, 55 air gems) will get you a Dai Tengu (A3N1E1 Holy 2 mage) with his retinue of 15 Karazu Tengu and 10 unique (as you can't normally summon them, which is a shame) Konoha Tengu clad in samurai armor. A strong, sacred Air mage with the patting to summon all the other Tengu, plus a nice, big retinue to accompany him into battle. Even if it is pricey, I believe it is what you should aim for. Starting with Yomi, 1 in 4 of their sorcerers (the mages doing the research, unless you go full indy research) will have A1E1, the necessary to cast Contact Konoha Tengu, and with a bit of bootstrapping/relatively cheap empowering (do it quick, though, as the old fart might pass out in the next turn), you can get them to A2E1, what it takes to Contact Dai Tengu and not worry about this anymore. They even get Air and Nature gems from their national sites. However, the bless people usually go with for them (a SC bless, heavy on E and N to make the best out of the Dai Oni) may not do way too much for the Tengu. With Shinuyama, though, a blessing aimed around their powerful sacred mages, the Bakemono Sorcerer, can be pretty useful for the Tengu (W9 for quickness make them more dangerous opponents, a light Air bless helps with the lightening strikes, and a greater E blessing might help them with their poor armor). However, they don't have any mage with innate access to both Earth and Air, just Air and Nature, and their national sites can't produce neither Air or Nature gems, so a pretender to break into the Dai Tengu might be necessary. So, neither of those nations are really tailored around the Tengu. Yomi can get all of them and start accumulating gems early, but a blessing tailored around them might make them even weaker than they already are by now. Shinuyama can stay up on its own legs with its best troops, which would allow you to maybe build a bless for them, but a pretender to search sites would either make it too weak, or you would end up getting them a bit too late. So, any thoughts on that? Would you risk using Tengu as Shinu/Yomi in MP? And how would you do it? |

I've used them as Yomi in Dominions 3 and found them useful. Flying troops are nice in storming castles, and the Dai Tengu with a crystal shield can cast Fog Warriors. In dominions 3 CBM the Dai Tengu were priced cheaper making them quite a bargain. At 55 air gems I think you are hard pressed to summon more than one. The Karasu Tengu can cast barskin/mirror-image/elemental fortitude and given a frost brand to make a light thug to to lead some Kohona Tengu. |

Why use a Crystal shield at all? The Teaching Sign is why the Tengu are so much better when used by Jomon than by the other 2 nations. Also, the Dai Tengu can cast Fear Not Sign and do so very well. |

Now, my problem with that kind of strategy is that regardless of the era it's a big gamble to bless up for them ; and they don't like the same bless as your sacred. For EA/MA, I advice to storm, storm power, and fog warrior over crystal shield. At least in mid game. |

Shinu can summon Dai Tengu, but you have to be really, really lucky with Kitsune randoms, or have A4 on your pretender and still be pretty lucky on your Kitsune randoms. |
