Stygian path testing; Certainly more useable than first though

Hello.

I have done a bit of testing of Stygian Path, the 15D spell to teleport an army.

The test was done with Onaquis (Demon of the Bone Staff to be precise) who were made non stealthy (don't ask). The troop were 20 longdeads (5HP, random protection), and 20 Sun Guide (9HP, 13 prot, no elemental protection).

The losses were surprisingly consistently 50% of the units. The Onaqui took an affliction once in the testings of the time, while the Sun Guide took afflictions about 10% of the time and the surviving longdead were damaged 33% of the time.

That lead me to think that Stygian Skin make an attack against most if not all units that do the stygian path. While the datas are not sufficient to be sure, it more or less line up with a systematic AN 2 attack on everyone.

It's interesting to see that the longdead, despite being undead and poison immune, did not fare a lot better than the sun guides. It's also interesting to see that on such fragiles units, the death toll was "only" 50% ; Stygian path can be used meaningfully by any kind of troops as long as the mage is sturdy.

Interesting. Seems like it might be useful to, say, Niefelheim with it's easy access to death but hard to access astral/nature and beefy troops.

Then again, at Thaumaturgy 8 it seems like it'd come online very very late for any nation, as Thau doesn't seem to be a main focus for most death nations, unless they also have good Astral? Death to me is mainly a conjuration/enchantment school, with a cross-path focus in evocation.

Well the text from the manual for the spell :

En route, all troops are attacked by a dmg: 1 AN attack and
a dmg: Death MR attack. These represent attacks by the spirits of the
underworld. Stealthy units only have a 20% chance of being hit by the
death attack.

The caster gains no benefit from stealth: he is leading
the army.

What im interested in is how this works in practice , so for example you send units to a province with this , but en route the caster dies what happens to the units?

Is this counted as a battle, so do mindless units get destroyed if the caster dies or do they continue until they arrive?
