Hi folks,

I am planning a new guide on basic troop and commander scripting. It won't have much to do with magic scripting so mostly about expansion and early game. This classic thread by Raiel is the only one I am aware of and it is quite out of date: Basic Battle Tactics

If you have hints, tips or suggestions please post here. I will work out an outline soon.

Cheers,
Maer

One thing that I think would be a very helpful inclusion is the battlefield measurements - found here (dorpbox link is a particularly helpful diagram):

http://www.desura.com/games/dominions-4-th...um/thread/range

Also, including a few sentences describing how AP translates to movement on the field would be a good addition. Knowing that you can get the first attack by literally just counting the squares can be something of a revelation for new players I think. It's good to have this down as a basic principle when they start to build more complex scripts later on.

I think I have some tips I haven't seen before for mid game fighting as well, but I'm not sure if they'd have a place in this guide. I'll see if I can organise them into something coherent.

Trust me, I'm a doctor
Those are all useful topics to cover, but I would suggest putting the mechanics (eg - battle map dimension, ap, and morale) before things that exploit those mechanics (bull and horns, flanking, etc) just so that no one gets lost if you reference those rules when explaining where exactly you position your guys

Oh that is just a very rough list of topic. It is not in order yet. I am thinking out loud by writing.

No useful feedback, but it's a really great idea, as I'm not very good with scripting. So, thanks in advance !

Effective use of retreat.
Choo-choo blesses.
Battlewide spells (Ros, Earthquake, Darkness, Storm, Flaming arrows, etc). Why they're effective,
Effective counterspells.

Tramples.

Usage of script busting spells - howl, wow etc.

Since this is about scripting, flying should be mentioned.

Otherwise looks good.

Might use a bit on evo baiting/arrow baiting/targeting in general, as I don't see people using baits enough.
