General scales questions

Okay I've read that taking cold scales is bad for old mages. From what I gather a check is made every winter to see if they get any afflictions.

But is it related to temperature? Or just what time the calendar says it is? Taking growth supposedly reduces the chance you get afflictions, would heat 3 do the same? Or make it worse?

And with random gem events, my understanding is that:

Growth -> more nature gems
Death -> more death gems
Heat -> more fire gems
Cold -> more water gems

But what about Air, Earth, and Astral gems? What scales go with those?

I don't think cold is bad for old mages. The age check is done during winter whatever the temperature. Death scales are bad.

As for gems, I don't think there's a a straightforward equation for scales/gems. Magic is the best to get more gems, probably astral, and luck in general.
Chaos-> Astral, some fire.
Luck: Lots of gems, quite a lot of astral.
Magic: A bit of all too.

Cold is not bad for old mages, death is. So you need growth for them.

Best way to get more gems is Luck/magic.

For my experience as Marignon with this scale O2P2H3G3, I got fire and nature gems most of the time still.

And as Ermor with death I get a mix but 60% of the time I get death gems.

With Rlyeh and Atlantis I got water and Ulm and Agartha Earth

Maybe it depends on the nation?

Hmmm don't know where I got the idea that cold scales made it more likely to get afflictions. Have to take another look at taking an extreme temperature scale, particularly if I have mages with a supply bonus.

Old-aged units check for age-related afflictions every Winter in-game, so it's a common misconception that it's the Cold which causes their ailments. :)

With luck scales, your nation does seem to influence gems,(ermor death for example). But you also seem to get more gems in the highest path of your pretender.

It also seems to me sometimes that randoms on mages seem to mirror the pretender's path as well.

Might just be my imagination, and seeing a pattern where none exists.

Where are you getting this from? From everything we have been able to discern the only thing that affects the gem events that happen are the requirements listed in the events, which are viewable on the data inspector. From those we can see that the only nation-specific gem events are EA Kailasa getting Blood Slaves and Abysia getting Fire gems from the Smouldercone.

The only way we know of that your nation will affect the gems you get through events is by influencing the scales you choose. Ermor will get more Death gems through having Death scales, not because it is intrinsic to Ermor.

There is nothing to suggest that Pretender paths have any special effect on events at all. Given Illwinter have opened up events for modders I'm sure that would have been mentioned at some point.

Yeah, I have not heard anything like this before. I mean technically having heat scales = more fire gems because there are a handful of events that require heat, but they also require things like death and luck and magic. Abysia apparently has an event tied to heat, death, magic scales and warlocks.

Considering how many events there are overall, I don't think the extra gems you would get would be enough to be considered meaningful. In the case of increasing heat it looks like you add maybe 2 or 3 events that are like 1d3 fire gems. I imagine this is the case across all scales.

Ermor might well find more death gems from events, however.

One of the event restrictions req_pop0ok means that the event can happen in provinces with no population left. Because Ermor goes down to 0 population in their core provinces, this will affect the event balance they get.

shows you a list of the 0 pop ok events that mention gems (although you may need to tick the 'load events' and then re-click the link)

Yes, sure. But it is still not tied to the nation itself.

Caelum receives more cold oriented events, but that is not because events are tied to Caelum, but because basically everyone who plays them have cold scales.

Not exactly determinative. Magic, for example, will help you get events that give you gems.

But what determines *which* gems you get?

Beats me, but in the course of doing some yomi testing (a hundred games or so) the effect seem reliable enough. Changing the primary path from earth to air seemed to give more air gems. (ie, the most added paths to the pretender).

Over 40 turns or so, my gem distribution vaguely matched my pretender paths, adding a baseline for all.

Sounds like a clustering illusion to me. Having a strong mage with a given path will result in generally higher amounts of the matching gem because it helps you search out that type of gem site, not because you get a slightly disproportionate trickle of that kind of gem from luck events.

The mod inspector may not be 100% reliable, but it does include events that have a mage of a particular level in a particular path as a prerequisite. Almost all of these events are also linked to some particular magic site or a story event chain, and I couldn't find any at all that required a high-level mage and game gems but didn't have one of those other two prerequisites.

There are particular pretenders that have events linked to their presence as a specific perk of taking that pretender, but it does not appear to be the case that pretenders in general have such events.

I suppose if you want, you could run some test games where you have an awake pretender sit in your capital and you do nothing but mash the turn button, and write down your results in a table to see if any pattern emerges. It is not impossible that there is some undocumented feature in play. But I don't think it is very likely.

Could be.
