Weapon Area of Effect

I tried to find an answer to this but was unsuccessful. Hopefully I'm posting in the right spot.

Do weapons that cause an area effect on attack affect the wielder? For example, will a Shadow Brand's Leeching Darkness effect hit the wielder of the brand? Does is always need to be on an undead commander?

Thanks.

*EDIT*
Did some of my own testing. I'm leaning towards the conclusion that the area of effect does NOT affect the wielder. However, I'd still love to hear someone verify this.

The aoe of a weapon attack starts in the square attacked and spreads out randomly from there. This means an aoe1 weapon will only hit the targeted square, but any larger aoe has a chance to hit the attackers square. I would assume this chance is roughly 1/8 if it is truly random, but I don't actually know how it is applied.

Some effects are "affects enemies only" so they wouldn't affect the attacker even if they are in the aoe.

Trust me. I'm a lawyer.
In practice, I think this means that the only really common weapon that sometimes hits its wielder is the snake bladder stick. I'm sure there are others but I have yet to run into them.

This means an aoe1 weapon will only hit the targeted square

So an aoe 1 weapon will never hit the wielder because it is strictly contained within the square of the target right?

That is how I understand the mechanic.

But going back to the OP's question, shadow brand has a larger AoE than 1; that AoE will sometimes include the wielder's own square; and if the wielder fails the MR check, the wielder can be damaged by it. I learned this the hard way with a Sidhe Lord thug and an event-given shadow brand -- popped his own mistform and suffered a grisly demise.
