Here are the rankings and their meanings for the packs, coyote and fox group ranks may be added if they decide to create a group for themselves. Pack Ranks Alpha (pair): The Alpha pair is the lead pair of a pack. They give out commands and demand the respect of the rest of the pack. Only they are allowed to accept a loner into the ranks of the pack or raise the rank of a member. They are also the only pair allowed to breed, unless food is plentiful and permission is asked. Beta (usually pair): The Beta pair enforce the rules of the pack, making sure that everyone does what they are supposed to do. They often take up conversations with other pack members to figure out in more detail what is going on in their ranks, then report anything that seems wrong to the Alphas. To get to this position, one must have a great deal of trust from the Alpha pair. Gamma (2 max): These wolves are older wolves, often previous Alphas that have retired from their front line duties due to age. They are advisors to the leaders of the pack, counselors to those around them, and at times the best confidants. Delta (2 max): Delta wolves play an important role in the pack. They are usually very swift wolves, their task being "runners" to spread information through the pack. From time to time, if it is absolutely necessary, these wolves will be sent out to other packs as well, adding risk to their jobs. Guardian (1): There is only one Guardian wolf per pack. The task of this wolf is to guard the Alpha pair's pups during times of danger when they may be targeted by those up to no good. This wolf is as trusted to the Alpha pair as the Betas are, but do not hold the same authority. Sentinel (2 max): This rank is used only in times of war and mistrust, when other wolves may be up to no good. They are permanent guards of the borders of the pack, turning away anyone that even remotely seems suspicious. It is their job to keep out those that may want to harm the pack while still allowing in those that may desire to join. They often team up and command Patrollers and Scouts. Lead Hunter (1): The job of the Lead Hunter is to lead hunts. Only the Lead Hunter and the Alpha pair may start up a pack hunt. It is the task of this wolf to ensure enough prey is taken down to feed the members of the pack. The Lead Hunter is also the pack's Head Warrior. Hunters (unlimited): Hunters are under the command of the Lead Hunter. They are expected to follow the Lead Hunter's orders. The more hunters there are, the larger the game that can be killed for the pack. Hunters are also the pack's warriors. Scout (5 max): During hard times, Scouts are sent out of the territory to other territories to check things out. They are almost like spies, but are not meant for prolonged investigation of an area. Should trouble be found, they report back to the Sentinels or the Alpha pair. Patroller (5 max): Patrollers patrol the borders of the territory. They are usually the first to encounter newcomers to the lands and as such are expected to bring them to the Alphas. They also look for evidence of anything amiss with the borders, relaying that information as well. Tutor (1): The pack Tutor has the task of training the pups of the pack past what they learn from mothers. It is the job of the Tutor to form the next generation of wolves into a well working part of their society so that their pack can continue on. Nanny (1): The pack Nanny watches over pups when their parents are off fulfilling their ranks, most commonly the Hunters. The Nanny keeps an eye on the youngsters and keeps them entertained with games and stories until their parents return. Subordinate (unlimited): A subordinate is the entry level rank for wolves. They are kept as a subordinate until their fitting place in the pack can be found, often given tasks to see what their capabilities are so that they may be later placed into a different rank. Pup (unlimited): Pups are the young of the pack. They have no other duties other than to grow and learn, having fun with their lives before they become older when they are expected to work for the pack as everyone else does. Omega (1): Omega wolves are those who have made such terrible mistakes that they are demoted to the lowest rank in the pack. Though not hated by the pack, they often turn into a scapegoat for problems that occur, are the very last to eat, and may be picked on by others who are upset. It is very hard to leave this rank once one enters. |
