Part 1 : PC Version Considering Final Fantasy VIII is so old it was made to run on the Voodoo series graphics cards, people have a lot of trouble trying to get it working on their new PC's. Here are some tips on how to get it running: *First of all, if you have a GeForce6 or above series of Nvidia cards, this game WILL NOT WORK ON YOUR PC. Any Nvidia card higher than the GF5 does not support 8-bit texture paletts. The game will run but the textures will be so messy that it's not worth playing, I haven't tested the GF5 series but noone should own one of those in the first place anyway. *Secondly, if you have a Radeon x800 or above series card, you will need to delete the file 'publish.pak'. Otherwise the game will freeze before the 'Eidos' animation finishes. *Ok, so I'm assuming anyone still reading will have a radeon card or a -GF4 card. In this case it's time to go here: Link and download the 1.2 patch. There is a different patch for GeForce owners (the 1.2 NV patch) so make sure you get the right one. *Now, a lot of lazy people start asking for help with their FF8 PC before they even try to trouble shoot it themselves. Before you run the game, check your config! This means go into your FF8 directory and run 'FF8Config.exe'. From here you can check your controls, graphics and audio settings. At this stage most PC's will run the game fine with 'Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration', 'Full Screen', and 'High resolution movies'. If you have any graphical glitches at all, I'm sorry but you're gonna have to set your Renderer to software mode, unless it's because of your aa or af settings (in which case they should be turned off). *Sound: The PC version of FF8 has major issues with sound quality. The only way to fix this is by having one of the old creative sound cards which I don't even remember the name of, or by downloading the 'SoundFont Update' - which I have failed to find on the internet after hours of searching . This strategy has been written under the assumption that you are using the latest drivers for your graphics card. This concludes the tutorial .------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Part 2 : Emulating PSX on PC Emulating your old PSX Final Fantasy games might sound like a difficult and complicated process but it's really very easy to do. Here are some tips. *Firstly it is suggested that you have a suitable computer before you start emulating your games. Here is MY list of suggested specs: - 256mb RAM or more - 1.5 Gig processor (suggested 2Gig P4 or AMD 2000+) - Windows or Linux OS - 128mb graphics card (suggested nvidia GF4 Ti4200+ or Radeon 9600Pro+) I have made this list to suit both acceptable performance AND graphics, the games may run on a lower quality PC but not as good. *Once you have your PC worked out, here is the software you need to download: - ePSXe v1.6 (1.5.2 is better if you can bother finding it) - Pete's GPU Plugins v1.76 - Eternal SPU v1.41 - P.E.Op.S. CDR v1.4 - Clone CD (if you want to use ISO's in place of your CD's) - PSX BIOS All of this software can be downloaded right here: http://www.ngemu.com/psx/epsxe.php and here: http://www.ngemu.com/psx/epsxe.php?action=plugins except for clone cd which is located on the official site and the PSX BIOS which is hard to find as it's illigal for wesites to host, however I can tell you the file name is 'SCPH1001'. This tutorial will be continued upon request, it's not worth continuing unless someone actually needs help. - PillFreak This tutorial is © by Dylan Downs 2006 Edited by PillFreak, Apr 6 2011, 12:53 AM.

Sorry for the late reply, Kekso. Your PC is certainly equipped to run the game in high quality so it sounds like you're having a compatability or graphics driver issue. Your 64mb Radeon is not suitable for the latest drivers but if you go to ATI's website you can browse through the older drivers to find the latest one which supports your card (I'm guessing it's an 8500 or something). You can also try running the ff8 config and, in the graphics tab, tick 'No Field Bilinear Filtering' and make sure your display is set to 'Primary Display Driver', if it doesnt make much difference try a different renderer (in the graphics tab also). I have set Primary Display Driver, then Renderer and with Accelerator the graphic is with black holes and lines on the screen, when I have Renderer the graphic is much better but magic spells are making big trouble when I change my screen resolution to 1/4 there is no problem with graphic but the game screen is small (1/4 of Fullscreen) |

Ok, if you're using the newest video drivers you'll have to change them like I said. If you're using older ones you should check your graphics card settings. Right click your desktop -> properties -> Settings Tab -> Advanced -> there will be a tab for your card settings here (it will read 'ATI Radeon' or 'Catalyst' or something like that). This is where you make sure you have anti-aliasing (AA) and anisotropic-filtering (AF) both turned off for optimal performance. There will also be an option for 'Vertical-Sync', try changing this aswell. |
