OK, I brought this up in the "OK, So Like..." thread, and I wanna see if it'll work.

So my idea for a fun new thing for this site was this: A bunch of us who still own copies of Final Fantasy VIII get together and work on a massive, collaborative strategy guide worthy of us lil FF8 gurus on here.

Now, there's a number of things to work out. Namely, how to go about it.

We could:

a) each take a disc/half disc/whatever depending on how many volunteers we get and go from there

b) each take a scenario (ie: The Fire Cavern, The SeeD Test, The First Mission (Timber), etc...), then based on how many of us there are working on it, each take a second/third/eightieth scenario as we go

c) Each of us does our own strats for the entire thing, and once we're each finished, merge it into one huge, massively work-able strat that covers practically everything

d) some other option that works similarly.

So anyone who's possibly interested (I think this will take a good few months, possibly/probably more), please volunteer here (even if you only want to do, like, maybe one scene's worth, or work on a handy GF or Magic or Junctioning guide or something to go along with it) and vote which option you like.

I'm hoping there's at least 3-4 interested people, but I'm not counting on it, especially since both Red and Siefer, my typical challengers from the Strategist crown, don't seem to be around (much) anymore. But I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised...all you need to do is be able to play the game and give us a working overview of how you managed it. =P

SO SIGN UP NOW IF YOU THINK YOU'RE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE! Just imagine....a strategy guide we can truly call our own. Let's see what we can do, FF8K'ers! <3

Well, I do know bits and pieces of the game that could slightly be helpful, but I won't be able to play the game...

Uhh, lets see...

At the first of the game, before the battle with Ifrit, I usually run around on the beach before going into the cave and battle a lot. I get my level to about 25 or 30(yeah, this takes a bit of time) and then when I go into the cave to meet up with Quistis, I go into more battles to get her level up a bit. Squall, by about level 25 or so should be able to take on Ifrit alone, but just to be safe, I get Quistis up to about level 20.

I'll try to remember more if I can...

Yeahhh, I think if we're gonna make a truly epic walkthrough, we'll need to be a /bit/ more specific than "get up to level 100 before the end of the first disc and you're good" :P ...for reference, it IS actually possible to get Squall up that high by then. I've managed it the last few times I've played without THAT much effort, but yeah, I think we'd need a bit more set-up (ie: where to go to quick-level-up, what junctions to have set up, which GFs to have, what weapons you can rather easily get, etc....) and such to actually get a really helpful strategy. Although it's a decent start, at least :P

..Although if you no longer have the game, I'm not sure how you'll manage to get much more in-depth than that. o_O ...although if you wanna help, I'm not gonna turn anyone down. Unless their idea of an "in-depth strategy guide and walkthrough to Final Fantasy VIII" is to kill everything they see until the game ends. Cuz yeah, those shiny NPCs, like Xu and Nida and ChocoBoy and stuff, they like not being hacked apart by aggro'd players *shrugs* Plus you kinda need some of them to, oh, complete the game. Unless one's idea of "completing the game" is going until you can't anymore, which means being KO'd, having your Playstation explode, having the power go out, running out of the right discs to put in, having a faulty/super-scratched disc or four, and/or completing the final boss battle all equal "finishing the game" to you, so...yeah o_______OU

:P But yeah, help is always...helpful? :P So :D

It almost sounds like you've been there before...

Anyway, as for the Odin thing I mentioned in the GF topic, I don't know if anyone else has figured it out or not, but I did in a funny way...

See, my mother liked this game and sort of took it from me for a period of time... And weirdly, she'd hit every damn button on the controler every time a battle sequence would start... And, somehow by a s**tload of luck, it worked and she won around 90% of the battles she got in, which was probably around 70 or so, she only played the thing for about 2 hours a day for about 5 days... Otherwise, it was fine... Well, one day, I got into a battle that I didn't want to get into (mainly, because Squall was almost out of HP, and Rinoa and Zell were KO'd...) So, I did her method and Odin popped up. It took me quite a while to find the specific combination, but Hold R1 first, then Hold R2, then hit Square twice, release it, hit X twice then release it, then hit triangle, then hold down Square and X. Remember not to release R1 or R2, and this has to be done at the begining of the battle. It works every 2 out of 3 battles (at least for me)... Oh, and you have to hit the buttons pretty fast for it to work...

I was reminded of this when playing FFX-2... It seemed no matter what I did, I couldn't get more than 85%... So, I checked a few strategy guides... Turns out, there are certain parts in the game where you have to hit X or O to unlock some memories of Tidus... There are 4 sequences I believe... I unlocked the "Living Tidus" returns ending with a mere 63% instead of 100%... Without doing these things, you'll either get a ghost of Tidus that hugs Yuna, or no Tidus at all... Anyway, sorry for another game reference...

I'm all for this epic strategy guide thing, and not to burst anyones bubble, but it wont be very clear when everyone is adding to it, cause they'll all be playing in their own styles and reccommending their own strategies, so unless there's a system where they can follow just one persons suggestions the reader wont be able to follow the different methods as the game progresses. Not trying to take over the situation here but I think you might be working on a larger scale then we need to, something much easier would be to maybe set up a facebook fanpage with multiple discussions just for us to add to and have different guide sections there... It'd be much more available to all who may need it, and a lot easier to edit rather than scrambling through posts on forums each time we/they needed help.

Another suggestion might be to set up a freewebs/piczo site and have a few easy read pages on there. Again not to steal your thunder but I'm pretty good with piczo (not much to be proud of) so I'll help with anything you might need on that front.

Meh, there doesn't seem to be much interest in the idea anyway (probably because besides me, most of our former strategy gods are MIA [not to be confused with MI, fyi =P]), so yeah.

I have recently been violently reminded how little time and energy I have working full-time during the summers, so unless there are at least two or three other interested parties to help me out with this epic lil thing, I'm not gonna bother...at least not until, say, maybe after I graduate and/or get a decent, non-"run till you pass out from exhaustion or your feet fall off" kinda job...or at least have less things to do and more of that elusive free time.

I'll give any scragglers another couple days to work out if there's interested in this or not (I think it's an interesting idea, if a bit awkward and/or "funtastic" to work out), so if any other people become interested, we can work out something to do, otherwise, meh. Maybe I'll take you up on your offer to do one of those other things eventually =P

Thanks for the suggestions...? ;) :P

Well, the best way to go through the game(until the 3rd disc when you get Cactuar) is to not level any character at all. This can limit your spells and such, but when you're in Dollet, you can take control of Seifer and make him kill your other party members and use him to kill monsters and draw their spells repeatedly. Once you get Seifer to around level 23 or so(been a long time) you'll be able to draw all 3 -ga spells among a few others from the different monsters. I did this right after you cross the bridge(it does take hours). I don't take credit for any of this, got the information from different online guides a long time ago. It's helpful, though. Once you reach the point in the game that you get the Ragnarok, you can go and fight and get the Cactuar. He has all the stat bonuses available straight off. Then, so long as you've learned a specific Blue Magic of Quistis'(forget the name), you can use her and only her and junction the stat bonuses you choose and level her up to 100. Once she's leveled completely, give Cactuar to someone else and keep Quistis alive and the one destroying the monsters. It doesn't take long at all and provides the best base stats you can get outside of devouring and/or creating items. There should also be a card guide built in. A good card guide, I should say. Earliest to get them, when to get them, best way to go about it, etc. Cards that are good to mod for abilities and items for weapons would be nice. Think it's Irvine's card that mods to something you can use to give auto-haste to at least one character(GF). Alternate battle strategies would be good, especially for Omega Weapon. For instance, I don't use invincibility items or Invincible Moon, since Rinoa is the biggest part of my offense. Instead, I use the Defend ability with two characters. Should add in the earliest time to get things, such. Just my ideas and what I think would be good for a guide. Oh, I almost forgot, add in something about Devour and a good/decent/fastest way of gaining stats. Seems like there should be a better way of doing it. I'll give further ideas and maybe even contribute if you want. *End of 2 cents*

I would totally do this if i knew where my copy was. power lvling is stupid in this game though, since the enemies get stronger anyway :/

To people in the beginning:

Get Ifrit first. whatever you do, get him before you do anything else. then go to the beach on Balamb. make sure Quezacotl is learning card mod and ifrit Str. +20 and +40 and str bonus and shiva is learning heal mag rf or whatever. once you get them all, put str 40 and str bonus on squall. leave those there for the entire game (or until str is maxed/you unlock str. +60 on another gf). then go to a mart and spend all the money you have on tents. then refine the tents into curagas for everybody (you can access that from the "Abilities" menu. equip with str. j the 100 curagas you will have. you'll end up popping assholes for 1500 damage at lvl 12. i 1 hitted seifer and 2 hitted edea with my squall at lvl 20 or so. i never draw because i find it boring and redundant. i always refine. a good hint: just run through all of ur available RF moves every once in a while. most likely the item is absolutely useless and u'll get some bomb spells out of it.
