Hello, fellow FF8Kers. I just had a quick question for anyone with a PSP handy. Can you do all do me a favour? Pop in any random game (I've been having the problem with Duodecim and FF4: Complete Collection, but it's possibly for all of them) with a UMD disc (ie: one that you physically OWN) and turn on the PSP, and tell me if it makes scary, scratchy, super-loud, evil sounds when it tries to load. For the last few weeks, every time I've been playing my PSP, every time it needs to load anything, it makes these apocalyptic sounds when trying to load the disc. At first I figured it was just FF4: CC, since I started playing it around then and was doing it, but since then, it's done identical things with Duodecim, which worked fine before. So either I dropped my PSP and failed to remember doing so, or something's generally effed up. A friend of mine recently bought a PSP and has been having the same problems (scary loading noises as the disc has a seizure trying to load itself), so I'm thinking it might be a similar problem, like perhaps having to do with the PSN being down (for whatever dumb reason THAT makes sense for), since it seems to have started about the same time. So yes. Annnnyway, long story short, if you could pop any game you own into your PSP, load it up, and play it for about an hour (scenes which force it to load things, like, say, CGI cutscenes or whatever are helpful), and lemme know if you're having issues or not, that'd be awesome. Cuz yeah, I have no idea what's up otherwise. So bleh. tl;dr: Go on your PSP and try playing any game you have a disc for. Tell me if it makes scary sounds as it tries to load, since a friend and I both have been having problems with similar issues. If it does, reply back and lemme know. kthxbye! |

PSPs have PS-PISSED ME OFF... I really hate mine. Yeah, I believe mine had a similar issue, though not apocalyptic sounds. O.o But... It's either disk rotation error or a lense-motion error. Best thing to do is use your warranty. XD It's a factory issue. [My rant on PSPs is after this point. Read if you wish] Simply put, I dropped my PSP 3000 and it suddenly stopped playing UMDs. It could not even read them. From what I know, the Play-Station open-top-disk-slot design hasn't changed since the PS1 (well, not by much). What I mean is, typical open-top disk slots (PS1, and PS2 were the same), peg/button which, when contacted (via another peg on the lid of the disk cover) makes the disk spin and the laser turn on. Well, this little peg, next to the disk rotation device in the PSP (depending on version, the said peg is white or black, and no, it doesn't have anything to do with your PSP color). I poked it with my index finger, which if it is what I think it is, it should have turned the laser on... Nothing happened. No laser power up, no rotation. So, I poke it again, and then... It moves in the wrong direction; broken. I then realized something about the peg... It's too damn long. The peg was NOT being activated by a peg on the cover (like in the design of the PS1)... But by the UMD. Sure enough, I check KH:BBS and there is a long vertical slash along the UMD disk protector case, and, although, nowhere near the area the laser reads the disk, it is still a highly unneccessary scratch. I checked all of my disks... Now, note; KH:BBS, Dissidia, and Crisis Core are all in PERFECT SHAPE. I literally bought KH:BBS and Crisis Core in the past year on Ebay. I've taken care of all three of these games (the others I have came from Gamestop, and were used). I checked all of my games for any scratches when I bought them... Yeah there were a few on the UMD disk protector cases of the Gamestop UMDs, but very VERY minor damage to the disks themselves... and there was NOT a vertical scratch. Yet, since I've played the games in my PSP 3000, all of these vertical scratches have appeared... Granted, I never played these games in my 2000 (yeah the one that I told you guys about that broke a few years ago, I still have it), but I checked my PSP 2000... The peg which activates the disk rotation and laser is slightly shorter, and made of a different material (at least it feels different, more like rubber, rather than the plastic one in the 3000). Regardless, this little thing is located in a place where, if you put the disk in at a wrong angle (not paying attention) you could break it easily. The only protection for it is the horizontal bar at an angle that is almost an exact reverse angle of the little peg. You could still break it with a UMD if you weren't paying attention when inserting it. I seriously think that Play-Station should have thought better on the design and stuck it at the top or side of the UMD drive so that it could be activated when the lid closes on the UMD drive... Doesn't matter now, though, since everything is going to data, such as the PSP GO, the new PSP Verizon Cell-Phone, and the NGP... Though, I still hope they design an external UMD drive for the NGP. Anyway, excuse the rambling, but I'm just a bit annoyed. Knowing all of this, if I am right about the function of this said, "peg," then I really don't have many options to fix it... I know when I dropped it, the UMD drive opened when it fell (and the PSP bounced a bit) and the UMD drive lid closed... I'd assume that this motion caused the peg to break. It might be possible to replace the part with the one from my PSP 2000... Though, I have to talk to some people to find out if it is compatable, first... Edited by Sora, Aug 27 2011, 11:49 AM.

That sucks. I know the PSP I had before (which I gave to my brother to convince him to go get it fixed...no dice so far x___X), I dropped it, and the back cover literally popped off, which was annoying, but it worked fine once I managed to (convince someone else to) shove it back on, but later it once again got dropped, the UMD AND Memory Stick flew out, and after that it stopped registering the memory stick, essentially making it useless. As I said, I gave it to my brother figuring he'd be more likely to go to, say, EBGames or whatever and ask about what he can do to fix it, plus he said he had friends that might be able to do it. Gave it to him probably back in November, now, and he still hasn't done anything with it x___X In any case, I love my PSP, and while the scary sounds (which have, more or less, gone away---it's back to only mildly disturbing sounds when it tries to load things o___O) are highly disconcerting, otherwise I love it. I think it's become my favourite platform. Helps that I have unique access to some awesome games like Dissidia, Duodecim, Birth by Sleep and Crisis Core, plus FF1, 2, 4: Complete Collection, and Tactics: WotL, and FF8 and FF9 off the PSN, plus (hopefully coming soon) FF5 and FF6 in the near future. Oh, and if I ever care I can get FF7 off the PSN too. And sometime in the (*mumbles something like near or far*) future, FF Type 0 will be out, and that shall be awesome as well. Which essentially means I can/will be able to play every FF game prior to FF10, except FF3, on my PSP, plus a handful of other awesome games. So Plus the graphics are generally epic and I find it much more enjoyable to play compared to the DS and it's dual screens. x___XMmm, for reference, the NGP is now PSVita, fyi, and yeah, hopefully the minor issues you (and to a lesser extent, I) have with the system get all fixed up with the new console. In any case, I have no idea what was behind the weird scary noises, the only thing I can think of is that my PSP really doesn't like trying to load Duodecim or FF4:CC. Crisis Core is working fairly nicely, though. 32 more missions and the final chapter and I'm done (finally o___O)! ![]() I hope you manage to work out your issues (and can find out if your theory is correct), and uh, good luck I guess.

PSVita? O_o Ah bloody hell... >.> WTF is that now? XD As far as I knew, it had 2 touch screens (rear and frontal), 2 thumb-sticks (I refuse to call 'em Joy-Sticks), a frontal and rear webcam, a mic, 2 different USB ports (seems to be the standard one and the one used for computers), a different form of memory stick, and the standard buttons on the PSP (L, R, X, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, O, D-Pad, Start, Select, Home, Volume, Brightness, Sound/Mute, et cetera). (Edit: Nevermind. I googled it. It's pretty much the same, except they sold out to AT&T, at least 3G-wise, so I am assuming it's for wireless and Blue-Tooth capabilities. PSP sells a phone to Verizon and the Vita goes to AT&T. 2 competing phone companies... This should be good...) I feel somewhat tempted to buy the PSP-Phone... >.> Anyway, is FF-Type-0 due for release on PSP? Edited by Sora, Aug 28 2011, 11:26 AM.

The PSVita /is/ the NGP, just with a shiny, vaguely less awkward name. So yes. I'm assuming whatever specifications it had prior to the name change it retains now. I haven't heard that much about the PSP-phone thing, but odds are it wouldn't be available here anyway, and even if it was, I quite like my PSP and DS, thank you, and don't really need a phone pretending to be any more of a gaming platform then they already are o____O (also, I'm poor )As for FFType 0, it also got a rename, it was originally FF Agito XIII, but I guess because FF13 didn't do as well as they wanted it to (or, as they claim, "if [Type 0] does well enough, it can spin-off an entire series of its own a la Crystal Chronicles/Tactics/etc."), they decided a name change was in order, so yeah. The most surprising thing is that Type 0 is so huge, it requires two UMD discs to play (which I think makes it unique amongst PSP games), and yeah, it's like a bloodier, more epic version of FF Tactics---you have 13 heroes/heroines from this "battle school" type place who get thrown into a conflict when their country is invaded, and they fight back, etc. Each uses a different weapon type, has, I think, their own unique summon, and the game isn't afraid, it seems, to be very bloody and show lots of people horribly dying (including Bahamut! :O ...seriously, watch the trailer for it on YouTube). If you want some more vague info on it, check the FF and KH News thread, it has some more pseudo-info on there. But yes, to answer your question, it is for PSP, and will probably be amongst the last major games for PSP before everyone moves on to the PSVita. And it looks pretty awesome, so I wish they'd announce some release dates, already, so I know when I need to throw away 60-odd dollars, probably, to play it
