((So, I started writing Sowen's past with the girl whom Trinity reminded him so much of. This is what I have so far, but guaranteed there will be more. Writing this damn thing made me cry, so it will take me a long time. Damn you, Trinity. lol))
Music polluted the air. The orchestra was the largest Sowen had ever seen. Hundreds of men and women playing countless instruments, lightening the mood of the room. Clusters of party-goers dressed in the finest of their clothes mingled amongst each other. This was not his crowd, but he was not here to make friends. Word around town was the French king was looking for an adviser. He needed someone to make all his decisions for him while he sat on his throne and grew fat. Sowen was that man. He was here to apply for the job. Alchemy had recently been outed as fraud, and that made it quite difficult for con men to make a decent living. The next best thing was bossing around a king and getting paid to do it. It still was nothing compared to his old job. Being an alchemist allowed him unlimited freedom with no work at all.
The laughter and chatter roared through Sowen's ears, and after a while he could not take it anymore. Everyone was just too happy, too comfortable with everyone around them. Sowen did not know any of these people, and the king had not shown up yet. What sort of host was late to his own party? He decided to step outside, get a breath of fresh air. Impatience was strong with him tonight, and he just wanted to get everything over with. What would the king think when a vampire approached him and asked to be his adviser? Sowen had been around for quite some time now, so he knew enough about the world to be diplomatic. He was probably the best choice, but could the man get over the fact that Sowen was a vampire? All though, he was a daywalker, so he could keep the vampire part to himself. If the king was not a powerful enough psychic to notice his aura then maybe he might just not tell anyone about it.
Cool night air filled Sowen's lungs the moment he stepped out into the garden. It was void of people. The only living things out there were the plants themselves and a few chirping crickets. At least, that was what he thought at first. As he moved deeper into the garden he saw a gate. Strangely, the gate looked as if it was to keep something closed off from the garden. The gate was open, and he took it as an invitation. Later he wondered why he went in at all, but at that moment it just felt like the right thing to do.
Inside everything smelled of fruit. He looked around and really took it in. It was an orchard. A humming echoed from further in, and Sowen was captivated. It was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard, and he had been around a long and had heard many things. Without thinking he followed the sound, not bothering to wonder why he was so interested at all. The only thing he could think about was how lovely that voice was and how badly he wanted to see the body that possessed such beauty. From the scent and sound he gathered that the woman was a human, but that was not problem for him. Sowen spent more time with humans than his own kind. Actually, he could not remember the last time he saw another vampire. Most associated themselves with a kiss, but he just felt so much more at ease on his own. Since he was a daywalker it was easier for him to blend in, and so he did.
Then he saw her: the image of perfection. Huddled under an apple tree, a kitten propped in her lap, sat the most beautiful woman he ever laid eyes on. His footsteps made no sound as he approached her. Sowen did not wish to disturb her, only to observe. The way those caramel locks flowed over her shoulders, dotted with streaks of chocolate, just took his breath away. That golden skin was unlike anything he had seen in all of France. It carried a weight of something darker, different, mysterious. He felt a twinge in his heart that he always thought was purely metaphorical. All he wanted at that moment was to get to know this girl. “Excuse me, miss.” he said, his rough Arabic accent apparent. She lifted her head, her eyes meeting his. His voice caught in his throat at the sight of those dazzling blue. Green speckled her eyes, but they were very blue. They held more life than any eyes he had ever seen. It was simply astonishing that someone so young could be so full of life.
Silence swelled between them for an eternity. Sowen wondered if she was as speechless as he was, but then she spoke. “Can I help you?” she asked in a velvet voice, one that is almost tangible. He could have sworn he felt her words brush against his skin, gently caressing his arms. It was delicate, but it held a strength to it. Just those four words told Sowen that there was a fierceness to this woman, something hidden deep inside. He blinked a few times, trying to understand what she had just said. His mind was full of mist, and nothing made sense but her beauty. The kitten let out a mew and scampered off.
“I was just out for a walk,” he said, not sure what else to say. Then something struck him as odd. “What is a beauty like you doing out here all by yourself when there's a party going on inside?” he asked, truly curious.
She let out a sigh, exhaustion livid in her eyes. The life never left, though. It only grew, burned hotter. “I tire of my father's parties. They are merely a show of power for him, and I hate it,” she said, shaking her head.
Sowen knelt down and sat next to her. “I, too, grow weary of the parties, but in my time who wouldn't?” he chuckled. Then he caught he had said, and changed the subject. “May I keep you company?” he asked, hoping she did not inquire further about his last comment. If she was the princess then she may tell the king about a vampire. Something thick flowed from her, though. She was a psychic of some sort, but he could not be sure what kind. That did mean one thing for sure: if she was even slightly skilled, she knew what he was. “I'm Sowen by the way.” He felt introductions were necessary if she was going to be tasting his aura and he tasting hers.
“In your time?” she asked just as he had feared. A giggle flowed from her lips, and Sowen offered a raised eyebrow in response. “If you are trying to hide what you, you are not doing a good job of it. And yes, as long as you promise not to eat me.” That comment would have angered him if she had not given another giggle with it. That sound was the most beautiful sound, and he never wanted her to stop.
------------------------------------
Sowen ran through the orchard, Serenity's hand firmly gripped in his. Laughter escaped her lips and it was a musical sound. Darkness danced in and out of the trees, the stars twinkling above. Without warning, Sowen stopped, causing Serenity to bump into him. He turned to her and offered her the happiest, most sincere smile he had ever given anyone. There they stood, beneath the apple tree that had brought them together. He loosened his grip on her hand, grabbing her upper arms, and backed her up against the tree. “Do you remember the first night we met, Serenity?” he asked, but he did not give her a chance to answer. Instead, he pressed his lips to her. She wrapped her arms around his neck and let herself fall into the kiss. When he broke from her lips he looked into the most life filled eyes he had ever seen. She was so happy, and so was he. It was the happiest he had ever been in over a thousand years. He leaned closer to her, moving his lips in just inches from her ear. “I love you,” he whispered, “and that's why I brought you here.” At that moment he let go of her arms to reach into his pants' pocket. Out of it he pulled a ring, elegant and expensive. The diamond surrounded in pure gold sparkled with hints of blue. “I want you to be mine forever, Serenity.” he backed away and held the ring out so she could see it. “Will you marry me?” he asked.
The moonlight caught her eyes just right and they sparkled. She looked as lovely as the night he had met her. Staring at her, even after all the time they had spent together, it still took his breath away. He had known for a long time now that he wanted to spend the rest of eternity with her. How he could accomplish this still puzzled him, but he could not think of anything negative when he looked at her. Serenity lifted her eyes to meet his. Tears shimmered in those dazzling blues, and for a moment he was confused. Sowen moved to put the ring away, but she placed her hand gently on his. “Only if you promise to love me forever,” she said with a smile that held the light that lit up the whole world. Her voice came out choked up, but he understood now: those were happy tears. His heart welled with the most overwhelming emotion he had ever felt, and he recognized it immediately. Sowen loved Serenity with everything he was, had ever been, and would ever be. He could not imagine a single day without her.
He slid the ring on her finger as pink streams of bloodied tears appeared on his cheeks. The happiest laugh he ever uttered burst from his lips as he wrapped his arms around her waist an lifted her off her feet. His arms tightened around her and his knees gave out. They both fell to the ground. Sowen leaned in, and whispered, “You just made me the happiest man in the world,” and kissed her. Tears fell from his eyes, but he did not break from her. He kissed her as if she were that last breath of air and he would die without her. It was Serenity who broke the kiss this time. She placed her hands on either side of his face and just smiled. Her fingers were soft, pillow-like, as they trailed across his cheeks. She wiped away his tears. He pulled her close, holding her, wrapping his arms around her in the most complete hug. If someone would have told him he would never see her again he would never have let her go.
-----------
((He missed her so much. It was his fault she was long gone, but he just could not bring himself to ruin such perfection by condemning her to an eternity as a predator. She was so fragile that it would have been a sin to curse her the way he had been.))
----------
Tears rushed from his eyes leaving pink trails in their wake. As much as he tried, he just could not think of one thing to say. He just stood there and cried in silence. The nurses and doctor shuffled out of the room. Only then did he really let himself go. Sowen fell to his knees, letting the darkness swallow him. Never again would he watch her sleeping, kiss those soft lips, or hear that beautiful voice. Those stunning blue eyes were lost to the world, and there was nothing he could do to bring them back. A choked sob rose from his lips followed by another and then another. He sobbed until his throat was too sore to make any sound at all. For two days he laid there at her side, not moving an inch. The hunger tore at his sorrow, but he fought it back. When the doctor finally came in to escort him out of the room he snarled. Sowen did not want to go anywhere. Where could he go? His whole world was gone now, taken from him after such a short time. The doctor spoke, but the words made no sense. Two men came in, and this time Sowen allowed himself to be shuffled out of the room. Just outside the door he collapsed, not aware of anything but his beloved in the room behind him. Serenity was gone now, and there was nothing he could do about it.
((Serenity gets really sick, she goes into a coma, Sowen assumes she dies and goes off))
