The ride was twice as long as it should have been, but Sarah managed to bit her tongue and simply enjoy the blissful silence of Jack not talking. It was still fairly early in the day and she was already almost at the point of needing a break from him. Sighing as he took yet another wrong turn, she closed her eyes and let them rest until he finally stopped on the correct street. As they got out, she hesitated when he told her to lead the way, eyeing him as if uncertain he was being serious or not. Remembering where they were though, she realized part of him had probably caught on this part of town responded a bit more friendly to her than to Jack.
Nodding, she looked up and down the street, biting at her lower lip before finally figuring there was only one shop on the street she would get answers from for sure. The old woman who ran the shop barely spoke english, but that was good considering most of the angry things hurled in Jacks direction were missed considering she never honestly told him what she was saying. Making her way down the street she paused outside the door and just gave him a look before pointing at him, “Just remember not to touch anything or say anything. She’s a grumpy old woman remember? Look around and see if anything looks familiar from the house, just don’t speak to her.” It was rare for her to bark orders at him, but most things in this shop were old, expensive, and the old woman had come close to cursing him on more than one occasion.
Opening the door, the bells chiming softly as they walked in, she made her way to the counter where the old woman with the glass right eye stood. Her eyes narrowed at Jack, but softened when only Sarah approached. Hushed, the two began conversing in German before Sarah left to take the book from Jack and bring it to the counter. The woman was not very happy to see the book, it took several moments of hesitation before she finally nodded and slipped into the back room. Dark magic was not a toy, and the books were not left out on the shelves in the store. You needed to know what you had to ask for, or they would not be foolish enough to let you have it.
It was lucky that she had a copy of the book they needed. While she was gone, Sarah gestured for Jack to join her at the counter, mainly to keep him from touching anything else, but also so he could see what the missing pages contained. The woman returned with a black velvet back, the book inside wrapped in silk which the woman removed before placing the book before Sarah and scurrying off into the back room. Normally Sarah would say it was to avoid being around Jack, but the face told her she knew what the missing pages were, and it was not going to be something she enjoyed.
Flipping the book open, she carefully turned the pages, counting in time to the one they had until they hit the missing pages. Slipping the book closer to him to make it easier to read, she tapped the pages. “There, our missing pages.” There was no way to take it with them without buying the whole book, something she truly did not wish to do because of the price. For now she was hoping the memorizing what the pages said would help them figure out how to fix whatever hell had been unleashed.

A bit of him was offended when Sarah commanded him to not touch anything before they even entered the store. If he had been less of a person, less of an understanding friend, he might have been angry with her. But being the kind, perceptive person that he was, he caught on immediately to what she was getting at. Poor girl was projecting. “Ha, right,” he chuckled, “You should be more worried about yourself, Sarah. You’re a bit of a klutz and I imagine there are plenty of fragile, expensive things in there.” As harsh as it was, he knew he had to be blunt with her or she might walk into that store with some delusion that she could touch the breakable items without consequence.
Following behind her as they entered the store, Jack leaned in and whispered, “Just stick to the most open area, okay?” Good thing he was there to remind her. Things might have gotten messy and cursey real quick. The store owner was a witch, wasn’t she? If Sarah had not brought him along for support, well she might have ended up leaving the place with some sort of hex on her head. One that he would be responsible for removing. She really was helpless without him. Lucky for her it was only a minor inconvenience for him to keep an eye on her while they, well more he was working.
Some sort of foreign gibberish was exchanged between his partner and the shopwoman. Jack assumed it was some obscure, rarely used, dying language, because even with his amount of skill and worldliness, he could not for the life of him even begin to detect it. At least Sarah was good for this; being able to talk with people who spoke dead languages.
When Sarah was kind enough to relieve him of the book he held, Jack began walking around the store. He poked and prodded a few items, wondering what precisely they were used for. All of it looked extremely suspicious, but he knew he would need an expert to decipher them. Even and expert on everything like himself would have trouble knowing what he was handling. Thankfully he was too lucky to incur any sort of bad luck because of a poorly handled trinket or torn page.
Replacing the strange-looking vase he held, he came to stand beside Sarah when she called to him. To his surprise, the vase fell off the shelf. Long before he walked away. Because it could not possibly have ever been his fault. The shelf had to have been titled. Or the bottom of the vase uneven and rounded. Oh well. Too bad he had not been close enough to catch it and stop it from falling. What luck, huh? There was crunch under his shoe as he took his final step toward his partner. A quick inspection of the underside of it told him a piece of the vase had apparently run across the entire length of the floor and embedded itself in his shoe. Obviously. Because he had not been near it. Anyone who thought otherwise was crazy. Or blind. Or both.
Moving closer to the open book which revealed the pages they needed, Jack leaned in and examined them. He had no way of knowing exactly what they said, but maybe he could take a guess? Either way, what good were the pages if they could not take them? Pulling his phone from his pocket, he unlocked it and snapped a few pictures of the pages. That should be good enough, right?

If heaven and hell were a thing and it depended on how you acted, Sarah was going to heaven for the amount of patience she had with Jack. Or knowing her luck shed be going straight to hell for staying by his side instead of leaving him to do this on his own. He'd die, or get whatever sucker he convinced to take her place killed and she just couldn't live with that thought hanging over her head her whole life. Sarah managed not to hit him, one of these days shed need to find a way for him to realize she was not all the terrible things he believed.
Settling for an eyeroll as he wandered away, she flinched at the very noticeable breaking sound from off in the store. Sighing, she and the old woman exchanged a few words before he returned and she had to do a lot more convincing the older woman not to hex him on the spot. They agreed she would of course pay for the vase, and when he reached in and simply took a picture of the pages she wanted to slam her head off the counter. The older woman looked ready to burst before Sarah, still speaking in German reassured her that they would not simply take those photos and leave. Sighing she shook her head, handed the woman her card and informed her to put both the vase and book on it. "Were dealing with magic, I don't trust relying on low quality cell phone pictures when we may need exact wording." She, he could do whatever he wanted but knowing their luck his phone would be dead when they needed the photos, or she wouldn't be able to read them. At least now the woman seemed less sour when returning Sarahs card knowing the damnable book was no longer in her store.
After a few more moments of her being told how to properly store the book and keep it out of the hands of anyone who would use it for evil or might lose it; and of course glaring at Jack for that, finally said her goodbyes as Sarah took Jack by the arm to drag him out of the store before anything else could just happen to fall on the floor and shatter. "Do I even want to know what vase broke while we were in there? Those things aren't just valuable, you may have gotten yourself cursed if you were nearby." Because implying he broke it was going to get her no where. He didn't break it, never had, never would. One of these days it would be his nose and shed deny having any idea of how it had happened.
Leaning against the car she flipped open the book and began skimming. She only got halfway down the page before shutting it out of how much she did not want to deal with whatever this nut job had conjured. "Jack what were messing with is going to be a lot stronger and harder to get rid of than anything we've dealt with. Whatever they summoned may not even be under their control which is not a good thing, if they're even alive that does not mean they'll be able to get rid of it." She was nervous, well fuck that she was scared and it showed. Given what kind of dark magic the book was describing she had every right to be worried. "Were going to need help, a lot of it, and I don't know if any witches nearby even want to mess with this." He had to think this one through, this wasn't some flesh and blood thing they could kill and call it a day. Hell just speaking its name if they ever found it out could draw the wrong kind of attention to them. "We need to be careful or whatever it is will kill us before we even know what it is were dealing with."

The creepy vibe Jack got from the woman behind the counter sent tiny shivers up and down his spine. It bothered him that she watched him so heavily, as if expecting him to step out of line or break something. Which, of course he wouldn't. Jack never did anything wrong. That vase had simply dropped on his own! She really should be more concerned with investing in more stable merchandise. If he were a customer (which he wasn't, because seriously, who buys that creepy stuff) he would be furious taking something so destructible home. It was no wonder her shop was completely empty of buyers.
Still, Jack worried with the amount of angry glares being sent his way that the woman might consider hexing him. He looked to Sarah for support, but she only seemed to be encouraging the crazy lady. Or at least, that was what Jack assumed she was doing since he couldn't understand the babble that came from either of them.
It wasn't until Sarah spoke up about the images he took that he paid either of them any mind at all. And the first thing she really says to him is about the poor quality of the pictures. How rude! As if he would take low quality pictures! Jack knew what he was doing. He'd been doing it for a long time. Maybe Sarah needed to go back and get some training, because to think she'd even consider questioning his methods was beyond comprehension. Did she forgot all the crimes and cases he had solved? By himself, with no help from her. As always. Was that how this one was going to be, too? Incompetent girl.
"If you say so," he finally said, shaking his head and tucking his phone away in his pocket. If she wanted to be difficult, he'd let her this time. Jack could be a nice guy, after all. It bugged him to no end that she thought for even a minute that she knew more than him about solving the case, but he could let her. Sarah needed a tiny boost to that frail ego of hers, anyway. He wondered sometimes how she could eeven bare to be around him all the time, what with how much smarter he was than her.
Watching Sarah pay for the book, Jack shook his head and laughed bitterly. “Considering how much I do for the city,” he said, “they really should offer us some sort of tab.” Police officers and RPIT investigators were allowed to charge things to the state; why couldn't he? Jack offered them a service that obviously the taxpayers money couldn't. How else was it that he had managed to lead to the arrest to so many wanted criminals? The police were hardly doing their job. If it wasn't for Jack, and sometimes Sarah, the streets of Phoenix would have been much worse off than they were. They were all lucky to have a man like him around.
Following Sarah outside, Jack shrugged off her question. "I'm sure it's nothing," he said, not worried in the least. It was just a crappily made vase. Why would she be worried about it? He doubted a cursed vase would be any match for his impeccable luck and wit. Mostly his wit. Because Jack was a smart man. Then she went on about the dangers of which lie ahead of them. Again he shook his head at her, disappointed in the superstition. "You worry too much." Taking the book from her, he slammed it shut and tossed it into the passenger seat. "Now, come on," he said, moving around the car to the driver side, "If you think we need witches, then you just gimme a name and we'll go talk to one." That was her area of expertise, after all.

Without fail Jack, despite her own worries, seemed to have not a single care in the world. Everything was a big game to him, one he would always win because, well so far he hadn’t lost so he had no reason to think he’d lose. Sarah sometimes hoped, for a few seconds every now and again, that something would knock him off his high horse enough to remember that sometimes things were not okay. Of course she worried too much, he never worried at all and more than once he’d almost lost his life yet had managed to never actually see how close he’d come to it. "Someone has to worry enough for the both of us."
The city did have a tab for them but they liked to call it bills and most of them were her hospital ones. At this point the nurses and doctors knew her face so well they didn’t need reminders of her medical history or her blood type. When the book was ripped from her hands she had to bite her lower lip to keep from smacking the back of his head. A book full of dark magic and he just tosses it into the seat like nothing more than a chewed up dog frisbee. Something big and terrible had murdered people and he was acting like it was just going to be as easy as driving to the market for lunch to get rid of it.
Sighing she bit back all of the things that came to mind to yell at him and tried to refocus on the task at hand. They needed a witch, there were no questions about it and she could only think of one who might actually be willing to look into it. Mainly because she was still fairly new to this city that Jack may not have angered her in any way or tried to sleep with her yet. If she was able to keep him a bit in check she might managed to keep this witch on their good side long enough to get this mess settled. Too bad she’d left her muzzle and leash at home, it was going to be a task to get him to cooperate once they started talking to the witch.
Grabbing the book off her seat she slipped in the car and tried not to hit him with the book itself as he asked for a name. A name was not going to tell him where he needed to go, he’d barely managed to get them here. She knew better though, the more she insisted on helping the more he’d fight and put them on the wrong side of town. “Kara Sherai, the local Ulfrics sister is probably the only one who will help.” Grabbing her phone from her pocket she skimmed through it before rambling off the address to him. “Her shop will be closing soon but we should make it in time.” So long as he didn’t get them too terribly lost they might even be able to catch the witch before her little shop was closed. If not, she happened to have a home address handy for emergencies like this one. It was always good to have a few tabs on the locals.

Of course Sarah knew a local witch! Jack only wish he’d known earlier that his little assistant was so fond of the occult. That would have made investigations so much easier in the past. At least he knew it now going forward. He’d have to keep in mind she apparently knew a lot about witches and their books and where to get them.
“Oh, I love werewolves!” he said with excitement. And he did. They were always so exciting to be around. The local pack didn’t like talking to him too much without Sarah present, but he’d found that’s how most people were nowadays. It was almost as if they didn’t know he was personally responsible for their safety. Who else was gonna stop all the bad guys if they didn’t talk to Jack? Some days his vigilantism was an incredibly thankless job.
He had heard recently about the arrest of the local Ulfric. Maybe he was the one responsible for the bad thing they were now dealing with. If his sister could summon demons--and Sarah seemed to think she could--then maybe that’s what happened. It made enough sense for Jack to now consider the wolf king a suspect. He wouldn’t get away with this crime this time.
The drive to the next shop was shorter than the first one had been. Jack only made one wrong turn, and Sarah was nice enough to not say anything about it. Every wrong turn taught him more about the city, which was nice. They weren’t really mistakes--since Jack never made mistakes--as much as they were learning opportunities, and he loved learning.
When they stopped, he reached back and picked up the book they bought and handed it to Sarah. “You think we’ll need this?” He supposed she’d keep it when they were done. Take it home and add it to her collection, if she had one. Though she probably did. She seemed like the kind of person who made collections of things that interested them.
Getting out of the car, he waited for Sarah to follow before he led the way up to the shop. He turned the handle, but it didn’t open. He peeked in the front window, but the lights were out. “Why would she turn out the lights?” he mused aloud. “Do you think she knew we were coming?” She was probably avoiding them. That made her a suspect, too.

Sarah had to bite her lip at his excitement about the local pack, deciding it was probably best not to bring up that despite how much he loved them, the locals weren’t exactly fond of seeing him. They had good reason, the poor boy seemed to do nothing but drag trouble with him...or cause it, it was hard to say sometimes if he caused most of the troubles he ran into or they just gravitated towards him. Well that and his ego more than likely made the Ulfric want to eat his face off, which was why she was very keen on making sure he never went off on his own to chat with any of them.
While he only made one wrong turn, it did put them behind schedule so she was careful to pull her phone out and send Kara a message to warn her they would be stopping by, but that they might not make it before she closed for the night. The girl was a sweet thing and her response was, as expected, that she would happily stick around until they arrived. Arriving was a relief and she had to fight the urge to tell him how proud she was that he only made one error this trip.
As he offered her the book she took it from him, slightly terrified that him handling it any longer than few seconds could cause it to fall to pieces. “She will be able to give us more answers if she can see the exact book, if she can figure out what we are up against she might be able to find something helpful in here as well.” Usually most books that had instructions on how to summon evil had a spell to send it back. Sarah was hopeful that the girl would be able to give them more answers than their day had provided so far.
Following behind him, she couldn’t help but laugh as he discovered the closed up shop. “Us? No. You? Maybe.” She couldn’t help it, the small jab at him was hardly much so she was sure it would be forgotten within a few moments. Reaching around him, she knocked on the door and within a few seconds the door opened to a set of blue eyes that Sarah always felt she could get lost in. After a quick and possibly slightly annoyed glance at Jack, she was smiling brightly in her direction.
“Come on in loves, let’s see what kind of trouble you’ve gotten her into now.”

It had been a rather uneventful day, so much that she was getting ready to close up a bit early when her phone went off. Kara glanced at the message, and took a few moments to consider if she should stay or make them come back tomorrow. While she’d never had to deal with Jack in person, she had been told plenty by others that he was a bit of an irritating handful. Sarah seemed to be more like his babysitter than his assistant, and from what few chats she’d had with the girl, he was a lot more than merely a friend to her.
Sarah asking for help though probably meant it was something serious, so she reassured her that they were still welcome to stop by. No point in having anyone else wander in and eavesdrop on whatever sticky situation Jack had dragged her into this time, so she closed up the shop and made a pot of tea in the small back kitchen. By the time the tea finished she heard a light knock at the door and made her way up to let them in. Shooting a quick glare at the awful driver for being late, she quickly turned her attention to Sarah and ushered them inside.
Once they were both in, she relocked the door behind them before giving them back her attention. It was the book in the girls arms she noticed first and a chill ran up her spine just from being so close to it. Whatever it was they were dealing with, something dark was lurking in the shadows if this book was involved. Holding out her hand, she waited for Sarah to hand it to her before walking over to the counter to have a seat. Kara didn’t even open the book yet, she simply stared at it a moment before looking up at the two of them. “The things in this type of book are not anything humans want to be toying with….” Part of her was tempted to tell them to burn the book and leave whatever case he had dug up to those who were trained to handle it. Knowing it wouldn’t happen, she couldn’t leave the two of them to handle it alone. Sighing she just shook her head and rubbed her temples before looking back up at them. “What is going on that brought you to this book? I’ll give you whatever help I can, you will want whatever this is out of your lives as soon as possible.” Black magic was an awful thing, if they did not tread carefully they would risk losing more than just their lives on this one.
