Crossing his arms, Cyprus listened, albeit unhappily, to his older brother rant. The only response Cy gave most of the time was an eye roll or a loud sigh. He had spent the past few days listen to Dodge rage about how "irresponsible" and "selfish" Strum was for disappearing. Instead of really listening, Cyprus kept his eyes on the road as he leaned his cheek on the passenger window. They were on their way to see the second youngest (and Cy's favorite) brother. Couldn't Dodge wait long until they got to their destination before he wasted his breath on his stupid opinion? Of course not, that would be way too easy.
"Oh, shut up," he blurted out, "It's not like I haven't heard this a million times." Telling Cy wasn't going to change anything, and he really didn't even want to be in Dodge's company. The only reason he even agreed to tag along (read: demanded) was the promise of seeing his brother again. Strum had never been as hateful towards little Buddy as Dodge was. It wasn't Cyprus' fault who his parents were, but that made no different to the block-headed eldest brother. Nope, he would just continue to be an ass. At least now Cy could find company with someone other than Dodge. It would definitely be nice to have intelligent companionship.
Really, Cyprus missed Strum more than anything. He had no doubt in his mind that Strum had not made the conscious decision to leave out of selfishness. When he had heard Strum had paid their dad a visit, Cyprus was overjoyed. It hadn't gone well, though, and now their dad refused to speak of it. Whatever had happened, it did nothing to sour things between him and Buddy. The only thing it did was spur Cy's stance that Strum was alive, and that he would be ecstatic to see his little brother. So when their dad was out, Cy swiped Strum's contact information and planned to make a trip to see him. Of course, he had to have made the mistake of telling Dodge where he was going.
With another eye roll, Cyprus uncrossed his arms and folded his hands in his lap. "What are you even going to do when we get there?" he asked, sure the answer would be something violent. "Maybe he forgot who you are and that's why he stayed away." It wasn't nice, but he laughed anyway. Cyprus would love to forget who Dodge was sometimes.

Dodge was unsettled to say the least. Believing him to be long gone all this time only to find out he had been right next door all along. At least thats what it felt like. He hadn't left the city. Had barely even left his home town. But still so long without seeing him and it made the older sibling wonder just what had gone on. Sure he thought it was stupid and irresponsible of him to just hide like he had when he could have sought out help. He was his brother. He would have helped him no matter what the trouble was. He should have known that. And thats what made him the angriest. Something had to have been wrong for him to disappear like he had. But he made no contact, didn't ask for help at all. What could have been so bad that he couldn't come to his older brother.
Dodge just couldn't understand it. He would have done almost anything for Strum if he asked. Even Cyprus, as much as dodge didn't like to openly admit it, could have been in trouble and he would have helped. He was their brother no matter what. Even if he was angry or if it was truly bad that wouldn't have made a difference to him. Strum knew that, so why did he stay away. It didn't make any sense to Dodge, and things that didn't make sense made him angry. That's why he was so frustrated with Strum right now. So many years of looking just to find him like this, a message from their father that wouldn't explain anything. It was aggravating to say the least. So he ranted a little, and Cyprus as usual made it clear he had no desire to hear it. To bad for him it was Dodges Car they were taking. He could rant if he wanted.
" I'm Going to find out why he didn't tell anyone why he was gone. " He said angrily to his younger brother. That was what bothered him most. So he was going to find out. He was sure it had to be something really bad if strum didn't tell them. Even at his angriest strum would have told Dodge, and he wouldn't have hidden anything from Cyprus. That perhaps was the biggest tip off of all. Cyprus had no idea what happened either. So something had to have been terribly wrong. pulling into the driveway Dodge turned off the car and sighed for a moment. He doubted Cy's spiteful statement was true. But he really hoped the reason for Strum hiding from the wasn't his own fault. He wasn't sure how he would have handled it if it was the case.
" Come on. " He said as he opened the car door and climbed out. Straightening out his shirt He sighed. His shoulder ached as it usually did when he used his arm for anything for extended periods of time. Rubbing his shoulder with his opposite hand he sighed once more. He would have to take something for it later but for now it would be alright. He could deal with it for a while. Walking toward the door Dodge felt nervous. What was he going to learn about his brothers disappearance. Would he even tell them why now. He had so many questions and all of them wanted answers, still he had to take it slow. Reaching for the door he paused for a moment to collect himself before Knocking loudly on the door, Dodge tried to think of what he would say but he couldn't. When the door finally opened it was not Strum that answered but a woman. Confused by this he looked to Cy for a moment before looking back toward her.
" Um, excuse me Miss. Is there a Strum Monlu in? We are his brothers and we just found out he lived at this address?" He asked her as politely as he could manage to sound through his confusion. Strum had left them and was living with a woman. That didn't make much sense to him at all. So he wasn't sure how else to respond. He was hoping this was the right place. If it was it brought a hole lot more into question though.

Strum was in his study working which left Jessica to roam the house. Or in her case find something relatively quiet to do that didn’t involve teasing Strum with her new sundress. Jessica had already lured him away from his desk for food once with it, trying a second time so soon was just plain mean. So she settled on making cookies, the smell would eventually be the only fair warning he got that she was going to get bored eventually and then invade the study once more. Just as she set the timer and closed the oven the vehicle pulled up and the two men got out. Well man and boy at least, however she did not recognize either of them. They got to the door at the same time and while she probably should have told Strum first, decided it wasn’t worth hassling him to see what the two strangers wanted.
Opening the door with the warmest smile she could manage, she politely waited for the man to finish. It was difficult not to look slightly confused, and then nervous, and back to calm and happy in a moment. She managed to pull herself back to normal though as she let the words sit. As far as she could tell he wasn’t lying, both of them were human, and looking at them next to each other she swore Strum would probably be a perfect fit right in the middle. So she did the only thing she thought was okay and stepped aside and opened the door for them. “He’s a bit tied up for a moment, if you don’t mind sitting a moment I can go let him know you’re here.” She replied politely. As far as she knew....well she actually knew very little of his past mainly because they seemed to be on ‘if it’s important, you’ll know’ basis with what they knew of each others past.
Jess now became worried that maybe he had a reason for keeping these two a secret. They didn’t even seem sure he lived here, or maybe it was just here they were surprised to see. Was he keeping her a secret from his family and his family from her? It was difficult to picture Strum doing such a thing but she wasn’t sure what other reason there could be for two mysterious brothers to just show up at the door one day asking for him. Once they were in, she closed the door behind them and ushered them into the living room where she urged them to make themselves at home and reassured she’d be back in a moment.
Walking down the hall she found her heart going a mile a minute out of nerves on what answer he was going to have for her. Knock once softly, she let herself in, and closed the door behind her with her back pressed against it. “You’re brothers are in the living room.” The statement, though it didn’t sound right, was really all she could think to say. The expression on her face clearly screaming ‘Hi, I have no idea what’s going on, help?’

Footsteps sounded as they came down the hall. Even on the soft carpet he could hear the patter of her feet. The warm smell of cookies which filled the home had been a warning, and he knew it. Strum had been on alert from the moment he heard the beeps from the stove as she set the timer. He just was not going to get any peace today, was he? Eventually he was going to have to change the lock on their bedroom door so it set on the outside. Then he could leave her in there all day when he needed to get some work done. Of course, knowing her she would probably just climb out the window and be right back to pestering him.
Lucky for her, she had grown on him. That was why, even though he had begged her to leave him alone, he looked up and had to fight the smile when she walked through the door. “Really, Jess?” he said, wiping the emotions from his face. If he couldn’t fight the joy he would have to fight all of it. “I’m busy. Please.” His tone was as pleading and desperate as he could manage, but he could not let it bleed into his face. Looking down at his desk he let the smile crack before hearing the door click and looking back up at her again.
Her expression worried him. “Jess?” he asked, rising from the desk to stand before her. Placing a gentle kiss on her lips he brushed her hair behind her ear and gave her the most concerned look he could muster. “Are you all right?” The question was sincere. Definitely more sincere than his pleading had been.
She explained it all with just a few shorts words, but nothing she could have said would have confused him more. A puzzled look took the place of his concern as he scrunched up his brow. “Brothers?” he repeated, not at all sure what she was talking about. What brothers? Taking a step back, he crossed his arms and pondered, wondering what exactly she meant. Brothers? He didn’t have bro—
And then it hit him. A tiny sliver of it came back. No names, no faces, just a particle of memory. “Oh! All of them?” he asked, recognition filling his features. He shut his eyes for just a moment, focusing on that memory as hard as he could. Images came to him. Three very blurry images. Breathing a sigh he opened his eyes and smiled weakly at her. “Well,” he said, “let’s go say hello, shall we?”
His steps out the door were faster paced than he would have liked. Less controlled. Strum found himself skipping the bottom two steps and he entered the living room ahead of Jessica. Two people of which he had no recollection there in his home. The faces. Strum knew the faces. He knew the faces had names, too, but for the life of him, he could not remember those names. How were they going to handle being told their apparent brother didn’t know who they were? It had been at least five years, because that was as far back as his memory went. Had they been looking for him that whole time? Or had there been a fallout which led to them separating? What upset him most was their father had not mentioned any brothers when he cast Strum out of the family home.
Knowing the only way to answer any of his questions was to ask them, Strum shook away the thoughts and smiled at the two men. “I’m sorry,” he said, not very confident in his choice of words, “I’m sure I should know you, but I can’t remember.” Offering his hand to the eldest and then the youngest, he thought for a moment longer before speaking again. Taking a seat in his arm chair, he reached for Jessica, wanting her to sit with him. At least this time he would have her with him to help put the pieces together. Wrapping his arms around her, he looked back at his guests. His brothers. “So what can I do for you?” he asked, not sure what else to say.

The door came open and there stood a woman. It should have bothered Cyprus that there stood someone from Strum’s new life, but he could not bring himself to be angry. He was nothing more than worried and sad. Lonely. Most lonely. Really lonely. Had he been so easy to forget that Strum hadn’t even though to pick up a phone in five years? Surely something else had to be going on. Something that kept Strum away. No matter what it was, Cy was certain he could handle it. Nothing in the world was worth not having his brother around.
While Dodge politely asked if Strum lived in the house, Cyprus pushed past both of them to step inside. He wasn’t about to stand around making polite conversation. As rude as it was, he wanted to see his brother right then and there. The address had been right. Cy knew it. That was fine. Dodge could do all the talking he needed to. Cyprus wasn’t there to talk. No words were needed to repair their relationship. He just needed to know Strum was doing okay. That he still cared.
He was too excited to sit when they were led to the living room. Instead he stood as still as he could manage, crossing his arms and letting his eyes go wild taking in everything he could. His eyes may have traveled, but his thoughts were fixated. It wasn’t possible for him to pay attention to anything except for the fact that any minute now Strum would walk right into that room. Cyprus wondered what his brother looked like now. Had five years aged him? Cy had aged, but that was because five years prior he was just fourteen. The distance between nineteen and twenty-four had to be shorter than the distance between fourteen and nineteen.
The woman came back following the figure of a man Cyprus knew he would have recognized anywhere. Ignoring the hand he threw himself at his brother, embracing the man for the first time in half a decade. Hardly any time at all, but it had seemed like an eternity. A lifetime. It was comforting to know Strum still looked like the same man. Not exactly as he had the last time Cyprus had seen him, but enough that he knew who he was hugging.
Stepping back, he allowed Strum to take his seat. The words which the man spoke hurt just a little. Just the smallest of stings. But it was something they could work on. At least it meant Strum had not left out of anger. In that moment he felt a bit choked up, words failing him. There was nothing in the world he could have said that could have made that moment any different. Nothing he could think of that needed to be said.
But there were questions that needed to be answered. More than anything, Cyprus wanted to know why he hadn’t said anything when he spoke to their dad. What had happened between the two of them that was so awful? Swallowing hard, he moved to sit on the couch across from Strum. Before he could stop himself to think better on it, he blurted out, “I can’t believe you’ve been in town the whole time.”

Dodge felt the nervous knot in his stomach grow as the woman spoke. He was here, Strum was here. He wasn't imagining things. His little brother was here. Before he could collect himself to agree to sit down Cy pushed passed the woman and entered the house. Really the nerve of that kid sometimes really frustrated Dodge. Looking back to the woman who greeted them he sighed. " Sorry about him." He said before following her inside. If he could have helped it he would have stopped the boy but once Cy got an idea in his head it seemed he wouldn't stop for anything.
It had been five years and it seemed from the look of the house that he had been doing well for himself. That made Dodge feel better but at the same time It just didn't make sense. It wasn't like Strum to vanish for so long without a cause. There was just to much that was strange about all of this. To much was out of synch. His father's actions and now finding out his brother had been fine the whole time. There had to be a reason for all of this.He had almost forgotten he was angry, all that ranting he had done in the car felt silly now.
All he felt now was confused but as he stood in the living room and waited for the woman to return with his brother he drove his attention to Cyprus. The younger sibling seemed distant, as though he was deep in thought. Was he just as nervous as Dodge was. There was still so much Dodge didn't know and he wasn't even sure what to expect. Would he look different? Was he really ok? Just how much could have changed in five years? Dodge didn't know but then again when you didn't speak to anyone for five years there was a reason to be concerned.
When the woman returned however Dodge's attention quickly shot to the man who followed her in. He looked older which Dodge expected, and he didn't look to be any kinda hurt. For some reason he had almost expected a wheelchair, but then perhaps his imagination was getting the better of him. Many times he had been worried that his brother had been hurt in some horrible way and was unable to reach him.for a while it had been his primary concern. But his Father had been no help back then and wasn't much help now. With no clues to work off of it was hard to say what happened but he planned on finding out.
Shaking hands with his brother he felt ecstatic. It was really him. It wasn't some trick of illusion his brother was really there. At first Dodge didn't know what to say,But then Strum spoke and he felt as though his stomach fell through the floor. He couldn't remember them. What did he mean he couldn't remember them. Strum had even stepped away from Cy after the boys hug attack. Dodge was baffled. Why would he not remember his own brothers. He seemed genuine in the apology. But that hurt something worse in him. What had happened to his little brother.
Cyprus's statement brought Dodge back to his senses for a moment. He needed to know what happened. Needed to figure this out for his brothers sake. The only way to do that was to ask. But if he didn't remember his own brothers who was to say that he could remember anything. Just the thought made Dodge's heart sink. " Strum, what happened to you? You have been gone for five years. I've been looking for you for five years. All this time I've been afraid you got hurt, or kidnapped or something. But you have been here all along right under our noses. " He said though he wished he had kept better control of himself, his voice shuddered even as he spoke. What would Strums answer be. Dodge couldn't even begin to imagine what could have happened. He needed to know though. It may have been a bit insensitive but Dodge couldn't go without answers anymore.
