A sigh of relief escaped her as the pack meeting was finally over and everyone began to trickle out and go home. Tensions were still high, and fading slowly, yet she was in no rush to go home. This new Ulfric had surprised her, he’d fought with the intention of taking the pack, yet had no desire to kill Strum or Jason. For a few terrifying seconds during his fight with Strum, Natalya was worried she would not be able to stand by and let him kill her friend. No she knew deep down that if he had tried to deliver a killing blow to Strum she would have interfered, while she knew that was against some rules they surely had for challenges, it was one she would always take the punishment for. No, he’d let Strum live, and hadn’t hesitated to offer Jason a peaceful end.
Jason, her eyes glanced over to him but he was leaving. Even if he was closer to her, she knew there was nothing she could say to him. He was going home to his wife for comfort, and she was one of the last people he wanted to see right now. She had stood by, unmoving, waiting for him to ask her to step in and see if this man really was strong enough to even be a threat to Jason. Yet she didn’t jump to her feet and speak up for him when the man had rained down his accusations on why Jason needed to step down as Ulfric. It made her feel slightly guilty that her friend was not suffering, but she knew it would be for the best and he would return.
Sighing, her eyes left her Ul-...no, that was wrong now, Jason was now just Jason to her. Her Ulfric was Laine, and remembering her position in the pack, she was waiting to talk to her new leader. Strum seemed to already know him, she waited patiently while the two talked. It was not uncommon for her to be one of the last to leave, but she felt it would be clear the two should talk once they were the only two remaining. Walking over she debated what she wanted to talk about first, she had questions of course, but surely he would have his own. Right now she was curious if he wanted her as his Bolverk or would give the position to another.
Once she stopped before him, absentmindedly adjusting the loose tank she’d slipped into after shifting in her truck and decided it was more than polite to start by asking him a question. “Why let them live? Strum I guess I can see but Jason, the one whose position you wanted, why give him the option to walk away?” There were a few reasons she could think of, but all of them simply seemed too good to be true. Surely he had some sort of motive, white knights just didn’t charge in out of nowhere anymore.

He had won. Well, there had never been any doubt, but still. The victory was one he would revel in for quite some time. Despite the gap in strength and power between himself and Jason, Laine respected Jason’s power. Now there was no doubt that Laine was stronger, because Jason was strong. And as long as his power continued to grow, there may come a day where he could surpass Laine in power. Not today, though. Today Laine was victorious. Today Laine was Ulfric. He had earned it, and he would not squander his time gloating about his victory. No, he would be dignified and diplomatic.
The rush of victory was not the motivation for the challenge, anyway. No, Laine had challenged Jason for the sake of the pack. Unfortunately, he had to be rather secretive about his motives while he was bidding for Jason’s position as leader. He couldn’t have openly opposed Jason, not with his words. Obviously he had made it clear his intentions when he declared himself Fenrir. Actually he had done so when he fought Strum for his position. While he could not hide his intention to rule the clan, he did not want to openly speak against Jason. There was no sense in bad mouthing. It showed a lack of class and intelligence. Even now he had nothing bad to say about Jason’s character.
Neither did Strum, for that matter. After he had defeated Strum, Laine had made it clear to Strum his motivation. That it was not a bid for power, but for the betterment of the pack. He had known that despite the other man’s close relationship with Jason, that he had openly opposed many of Jason’s choices and decisions as Ulfric. Laine had hoped Strum would understand, and thankfully he had. It helped that the wolf closest to Jason supported Laine. It helped to build respect and follows amongst the pack, and it helped him personally to have someone support him. A people led out of fear and hatred was a people divided, after all.
After the fight, Strum approached him to congratulate him. It was a shame to see Jason go, but it had to happen if the pack was going to move forward. For the safety of the pack leadership had to be passed into new hands. He listened to Strum, his eyes following Jason as the former Ulfric fled. Laine could not help but feel a twinge of pity and guilt for chasing the man off. While he had offered Jason the chance to step down from his title but remain among the pack, he knew Jason was not at all happy about it. At least he hadn’t killed Jason, though. That had never been an option. Not unless Jason had forced his hand on that one.
Even with new leadership Strum was still a designated driver for some of the lesser wolves or those without transportation, so Laine said his goodbyes. Now he was alone save for one more wolf. The Bolverk. Despite his time with the clan, Laine had yet to get an opportunity to properly speak with her. Which really was a shame, seeing as how her former relationship with the former Ulfric probably could have helped him greatly had he received her support as well. Now was as good a time as any, though. He assumed she had something important to speak to him about since she had waited until everyone else had left.
Her question was something he had been expecting from others as well, and he had practiced an answer for it for when it did finally pop up. “What has he done to deserve death?” he asked. It was a reasonable response. While Laine did not support Jason as a leader, but he supported him as a compassionate human being. “He is unfit to lead, but that does not make his life worthless,” he informed her, “And I will always respect him as the Ulfric he could have been.” And he would. Jason had so much potential to be a great leader. He just got the short end of the stick when it came to life handing out emotional messes.
Laine had a question, too. “Can I count on you for support?” She was an exceptionally important part of the pack. Her position should have kept the pack in check, affording her the power to take actions Jason had refused to. But Jason had refused her the privilege. Laine would not make that mistake. “It would be a shame to lose the best Bolverk this clan could have.” He smiled at her as he spoke, hoping she understood he felt no hostility towards her, nor Jason for that matter. He merely wanted reform for the sake of the people, his people.

His answer was one shed truly been hoping for. He was powerful, everyone had known that the moment he arrived, being this close she could practically feel it tingling on her skin. Natayla had never known instantly being so close to someone that if it came down to it, he could probably kill her. The thought actually almost made her fearful until he made it clear he had no intentions of hurting anyone. Struggles for power rarely ended without a death for this clan, anyone after Jason usually intended to kill him, knowing Laine could have but had no desire to made Natayla...well happy.
He had asked her a question, but she was not answering him yet. True she felt she would be more than happy to continue her position under his rule, but he needed to know she was truly thinking on it, just taking him in with her eyes before allowing him to have the smile from her hed earned by calling her the best. Nate took pride in her work, it was nice to finally have a version of it others could see. Yet he didn't know that, no not yet, he knew nothing really. However he seemed to already be sure that she was capable of far more than Jason had allowed her to ever do.
The smile was accompanied by a genuine blush as she let out a small laugh. "I enjoy my position far too much to give it up. The only difficult part about it is needing to listen to someone elses orders. I don't really take orders well from those I feel I stand a chance at killing." The look on her face didn't help give away if she was threatening him that she didn't think he was good enough to give her orders. So she only paused long enough for him to wonder before smiling again, "My Ulfric can count on me for support whenever he has need of it."
He felt like an ulfric to her, she couldn't place what it was really but her wolf which was suppose to be settled for the day was wide awake and paying attention, apparently enjoying herself. It was a shock that the dominant creature was happy to be so docile for someone who had not actually done anything to her to make her be submissive. Whatever it was it had to be a good thing, and she was very hopeful for how things would progress. With the new ulfric shed need to take time off work until everyone was settled. Shit. Work.
"It won't be anytime soon but there is a reason I'm the best at this. It will take me away for extended time every now and again, but Ill never be able to tell you where I'm going or how long I will be gone." Never. Ever. Ever had Nate hinted that her job involved her actually causing people harm. Sure Jason had seen the results of rougher jobs, but she never hinted that she had killed anyone. He needed to know though, it was better to just tell him what he needed to know now, the sooner they knew more about each other the easier it would be to make sure they could trust each other.
Then it oddly hit her that she had been slightly rude. Well not really considering the night but she could have at least told him her name. It was just what people did. Even though there was a very good chance he already had been told by someone else, it was just unprofessional to not introduce yourself to your superiors. Her shoulders relaxed, finding no reason to be on edge she extended her hand out to him, "Natalya, your new Bolverk."
While she didn't shove it at him to be a threat, she let her guards down for her power to let it flow around her. It allowed the simple hand shake to send what felt like a pleasant little jolt through her system. If she was going to brag that she was good at her job, he had the right to get a taste of what her power had behind it. Didn't want him to be disappointed by his decision to let her remain Bolverk.

The silence was not as unnerving as it should have been. Laine had a feeling she was only pretending to think about his question, his offer to allow her to stay as Bolverk. She would have done a better job at pretending she was thinking about it if she didn’t have that silly little smile on her face. The blushing made it even better. He couldn’t help but smile back, knowing he had hooked her. She couldn’t tell him no. Why would she want to? The laugh made everything all the better. Before she even said a single word he knew he had her support. He knew she would still be Bolverk for the clan. Like he had any doubt.
While he appreciated her admitting she had trouble following orders since it gave him a heads up that he needed to watch out for it, it displeased him because he was above replacing her should he need to. Honestly, Laine didn’t need a Bolverk. The job of the Bolverk was to carry out necessary actions that the Ulfric would have reservations about. The position was made obsolete the moment Laine took charge of the clan, because he had no reservations when it came to protecting his people. Unlike Jason, Laine was willing to do whatever it took to keep his people safe.
Laine could not help but laugh when she threatened him. Did she realize what she was saying? Knowing that he had just defeated the former Ulfric, knowing that the only reason the former Ulfric was still alive was because of his mercy, she threatened him. She was absolutely adorable, and he could not think to do anything but laugh at the words as she spoke them. “As adorable as that is, I promise you stand no chance against me,” he told her. He meant no harm with the words, but he hoped she was only joking. Laine did not want to defend himself so soon after winning the pack, but he would if he were forced to. A quality he believed made him the best candidate for Ulfric.
She agreed to support him, as he knew she would, and he could not help but return the smile. “Good,” he said, “I cannot tell you how happy that makes me.” It was beyond important that all the members of the pack supported their new Ulfric. While there was so many of them in the city that only a small portion of them knew about him and his victory, they would hear about it in time. He wanted to have as many wolves in the immediate area on his side as possible before the rest of the clan had a chance to challenge him and his authority. For what it was worth, quantity did matter.
When she spoke of being away for long periods of time and not telling anyone where or why, all Laine could manage was a raised brow. What in the world was she talking about? He had a feeling that she was continuing a thought she had left unspoken. Which was silly, because this girl seemed to want to do nothing but talk to him. “What will?” he asked when she finally finished. Of course, it wasn’t really a problem if she would be absent for even a large amount of time. Her position now that was around was merely one of show. Shrugging, he assured her, “I’m sure I can make due while you are absent.”
Taking her hand in his, Laine placed a kiss on the back of it before giving her a large, toothy grin. “Laine, your new Ulfric,” he returned the introduction. He felt her let her guard down, and in return he did so. He was more than aware that was powerful, but the small taste of her power was reassuring. It was nothing compared to his, but it let him know that he was making the right decision in allowing her to keep her position.

While she didn’t know it then, she would learn eventually how that laugh of his would be the end of her. Nate could only look at him slightly shocked at the word he had chosen to use, enough to raise a brow at him “Adorable? That’s a new one.” No one had ever chosen that word to describe her, mainly because very few people had an easy time viewing a potential killing machine as adorable. He was new though, he’d learn enough about her eventually and the word would probably be lost with time. Yet she would enjoy it, apparently she did not currently mind being seen as adorable, there was no reason for her to be seen as threatening anyway.
She couldn’t tell you why it mattered to her at all if he was happy or not. Or why it mattered to her that she had apparently managed to make him happy by staying. Which was good considering she didn’t really plan on going away anytime soon, she had begun getting use to this whole having a home and a ‘family’ to fill your time with. Now she got to adjust to having a superior that she would rather not figure out just how long she could last before dying. Though his comment only earned an eye roll, he’d earned the right to be cocky about his power, he’d just made her last ulfric step down and beaten Strum, even she would be confident about others having no chance.
Nate would let him believe there was no chance, it would be the only thing that ever made her small chance a bit better if she ever needed to go against him, though if he stayed like this, she’d never have a reason to. A little humility wouldn’t kill her either, she’d known eventually she’d finally run into a wolf who could overpower her easily, she’d just never actually expected to be calling him Ulfric. She’d forgotten to actually say her job was what took her out of town, “Work, sorry, long night, work takes me away.” Of course he’d be just fine without her help, though she wasn’t sure if it was meant to reassure or make her feel useless.
The thought was lost when what she’d expected to be a handshake turned into him kissing her hand. It earned him another laugh, mainly because that grin had done more to her than either of them would realize but she rationalized the laugh as him simply playing on her white knight thought earlier that evening. “It’s a pleasure.” For once she got to say that and was one hundred percent being genuine. After how much that pack had gone through, it was a relief to feel like there would be less to worry about.
Normally by now Nate would be home, inhaling a large breakfast before curling up in her bed and passing out for most of the day. However the more she thought of leaving, the more her wolf seemed to argue to stay just a little longer, curious about the new wolf it had to listen to. Fine, if the wolf was curious she would see what she could do to help. “If my Ulfric’s hungry and has no plans for breakfast he’s welcome to stop by, victories are suppose to be followed by good food right?” How harmful could one breakfast be?

A triumphant smile crept up on Laine despite his best effort. my Ulfric. Twice now she had called him that. Laine was still adjusting to the title and the position, but the endearment was something he knew he could get used to. He was all ready beginning to love it. It was impossible to fight off the smile that gave it away no matter how hard he fought it down. Which admittedly was not very hard. He was flattered that despite never speaking to him before, she took to him so well. A very large part of him hoped that he had that level of success with the rest of the pack. He really was only there to help, to move the Superstition Springs clan forward.
He had been slightly taken aback when she invited him for breakfast, but the shock was quickly masked with a friendly smile. “I see I’ve made a good impression,” he joked. Laine wanted her to feel comfortable around him. He wanted all his wolves to feel comfortable around him. And so far it was working. He wanted to be a figure of authority, yes, but also one of compassion and understanding. He wanted to be friends with his wolves, not just a dictator who barked orders and expected everyone to worship him. Not that Jason did that at all. On the contrary, it was one of the things he had gotten very right.
This morning, unlike most mornings after the full moon, Laine was not a designated driver. Typically he would be responsible for seeing that his group of wolves got home safely. Not today, though. Today that obligation had been designated to someone else. He would be allowed to revel in his victory, if only for one day. Also, now that he was Ulfric, he was responsible for assigning a new wolf to his set of wolves. Or seeing that a new Alpha was assigned to Jason’s set. At least until the new Freki could handle taking orders from his new Ulfric.
“Brekfast sounds wonderful,” he agreed. Not only was he looking forward to the company for just a while longer that morning, he looked forward to actually getting to talk to his Bolverk. Natalya, as it was well known, had a close relationship with the former Ulfric. She, along with Strum, would be his greatest asset in ensuring the pack was run smoothly. Jason’s friends could offer him insight into the man’s way of thinking. Because he had not been wrong in all things. He had just made some decisions that happened to cost lives. Many lives. Jason was a compassionate man, but he was soft. That was where he had gone wrong, and that was where he needed to be corrected.
Leading the conversation toward his car, he opened the passenger seat and removed a set of clothing he had brought for the morning. It was just a pair of raggedy jeans and a t-shirt with a stretched out collar that had obviously seen better days. He didn’t like to wear clothing to begin with, and especially not right after the full moon. No socks, no shoes. Good thing she had invited him to her home and not out somewhere in public. He probably looked like a hobo, or at the very least, a man who didn’t care about his appearance. Plus, the no shoes would probably have gotten him kicked out of any establishment.
He pulled on his pants, pulling the shirt over his head as he continued conversing with Natalya. “Would you like a ride, or do you just want me to follow you?” he asked. Either was fine with him, but he really wanted to continue talking with her as much as possible. She had not played her role in the pack to its fullest because of the former Ulfric, and he wanted her to understand the new requirements of her position. And also that he would not have as many reservations about protecting the pack as Jason had. Ultimately his plans for her were for her to become an instrument of fear for those who put the pack in danger. Their enemies would beg him to be merciful and swift in their death if he had anything to say about it.

Whether it was the offer of food or just how easily she seemed to be okay that he had just taken Jasons position, the smile he gave because of it was wonderful. Then again in his position, she’d be worried about how the alphas reacted as well, especially one you didn’t know very well. If her wolf wasn’t feeling so docile, she might actually put up a bigger fight for him to just earn her being okay with him taking over. Nate technically had no idea what he was hoping he could do for the pack, but she was at least willing to find out. Bolverk meant keeping the pack in line and any outside threats at bay, being an alpha added in that she and the others were responsible for watching the Ulfric and speaking up when they felt he needed to hear their opinions. Now, the problem was, would he listen?
He agreed to breakfast, and she decided only time would tell her just how good of an Ulfric he would be for them. For now, she needed to get to know him, and tell him what she could about her so they could start trusting each other. The younger wolves would look to the alphas for most of their reactions, if they didn’t trust the Ulfric, it would put the others on edge. If the Bolverk still seemed to be just fine and happy, and Strum as well despite the fight, the rest of the pack would feel more at ease about the new leader.
Following him to his car, she waited patiently while he pulled his clothes on. A task just about all of them seemed to hate needing to do to get home, but you could get in trouble for driving naked. At his question, she looked at her own vehicle, pondered a moment and then shrugged and tucked her keys back in her pocket. “A ride sounds lovely.” She could come back for her own vehicle later, if she really needed it. Lana needed to practice driving anyway, she was hesitant about needing to get her license because of how much paperwork it required, but Lana didn’t know Nate had ways around needing paperwork or identification just to have a piece of plastic with your name on it.
Once the passenger seat was clear, she wasted no time hopping into the seat and wait for him. Part of her mind was trying to decide what she was hungry for, pancakes? Bacon was always, you just couldn’t have a good breakfast after shifting without bacon. The fridge was full, so she figured she’d know what she wanted as soon as she got in the kitchen. Lana would probably be asleep by then if she wasn’t already, so she wouldn’t have to worry about anything. That and they had made an agreement that the day of and the morning after the full moon there were to be no pranks. Which was also good considering she didn’t think her new ulfric would appreciate walking into a home and tripping over wires.

He couldn’t fight the laugh when Natalya hopped into the front seat. She was more than eager to get to know her new Ulfric. It was flattering. Laine got the feeling she was all ready comfortable with him. Thank goodness for that. She agreed to the come along, and he smiled at her once more. “I thought so,” he agreed. Only taking one vehicle meant he could talk with her on the way, too. That would be more than beneficial toward achieving his ends. And getting to know his Bolverk. It really was a shame that he didn’t know her as well as he should have. He regretted sometimes not getting to know the rest of the pack better than he did.
To be honest, Laine was worried. Worried out of his mind, really. Jason had been a well-loved man and Ulfric. What if the wolves of the pack were angry with him now for challenging their beloved leader? Change had to happen, and it had to come at a cost, but was everyone willing to accept that reasoning? Natalya was dealing with it pretty well so far. Of course, he had only spoken to her for a few minutes. The fact that she didn’t accost him was a small boost of hope. Strum was doing well, too. He really appreciated having the support of the Geri, because he was going to be Laine’s crutch for a while. For now all he could do was his best to make the clan love him as they did Jason. More importantly, he wanted them to trust him. He only had their best interests at heart. With the courage to back it up, which was what mattered.
With her seated, Laine closed the passenger door and made his way to the driver side. Scooting in, he adjusted the seat and got settled. He hated the way the pedals felt on his bare feet, but he hated the feel of socks even more. “Okay, so,” he said, putting the key in the ignition, “Where am I going?” It was a valid question considering he had absolutely no idea where Natalya lived. Again, something he probably should have known. He had planned to take a bit longer taking over and stretching more time between when he challenged Strum and when he challenged Jason, but The Sickness had pretty much sealed the deal for him. Because of it, he ended up missing out on a lot of bonding time with the rest of the pack. He could make up for that now, though.
Keeping his eye on the road, he was sure to follow all the directions she gave him. While he did that, he also managed to think way too hard about everything. Laine wanted to break the silence that was only occasionally broken when he had a turn to make. “Your support really does mean a lot,” he told her. His insecurities were beginning to surface, but he was sure a little humanity peeking through wouldn’t ruin his chances at her respect. With a small sigh, he admitted, “I’m not sure how well I’m going to be received.” That thought was going to run him down if he didn’t fix it soon, too. He trusted his ability to lead, but did everyone else?

If Nate felt offended that he didn’t know where she lived, it didn’t know. Mainly because she felt no offense that he didn’t know her yet. It felt as if he had done his much sooner than he had planned, and she wondered if the sickness had taken anyone from him. Everyone had felt the pain of losing so many, but the ones who lost mates, friends, family, many of them still mourned. Natalya had felt guilty for so long about being away when that had happened, for not being here to help her friends when they were sick. Though, it was seen that it was best she was away, it was hard to tell who would’ve lived or died from it, and the fewer alphas infected the safer the pack would be when it passed. When they had found out who was responsible though, that was when Nate had finally grown angry at Jason for being so lenient with the ones who had acted against him.
Smiling, she gave him the address, and to keep it from being too silent, told him when and where to turn. Natalya was actually making him take the backroads, it took longer, but there was less traffic. She was also a firm believer that the longer you have to deal with what could be awkward silence, the sooner you find yourself trying to relax and have a normal conversation. While she wasn’t really sure where to start, she was happy when he finally spoke up. Powerful but humble, he really did seem to be too good to be true now. Yet she could tell he was being honest, that he truly was worried about how the other pack members would react to Jason being gone. He was very loved, and she was sure a select few would always agree with his decisions to be kind.
The world wasn’t always kind though, and sometimes the only way to protect the innocents you love, you have to be cruel to those who threaten their safety. Ulfrics didn’t have to agree with what they’re Bolverks did, they just had to let them make sure the threat would no longer remain a threat. That their enemies would have their whispers about the big bad Bolverk and the Ulfric who controlled it. Even packs with no powerful members took safety in the other supernaturals around them, even Jason had an agreement with the kiss here. Good enough that so far, she’d never had to deal with any of them.
So how well would this new Ulfric be received by a pack feeling vulnerable? She wasn’t sure, but she had a good feeling that they would all warm up to him once they saw him lead. She and Strum would behave, follow orders, reassure the pack that everything was going to be okay, that Jason was okay, that Laine was going to show those who meant to harm them, why they should fear to do so. “Many members will already be talking to the others about letting Strum live, allowing Jason to step down, how Strum got along with you afterwards. Jason stepping down must mean he agrees that you will be better right now, even if he’s not happy about it, I believe he will support you. From Strum you have also gained the support of Jessica, she may be a submissive but many will look to submissives to see if they feel safe or feel afraid. From him you may also have Dawn, she and Jess had a fight a while back but I believe Dawn still trusts her sponsors judgement in pack matters.” Pausing, she tried to find more pack members she felt would not be a problem adjusting to it. “From me you’ll have Lana. Again, many see her as a submissive, despite her fight she is weaker than most, but she trusts my judgement and will be sure to not feel afraid around you. Calvin’s still a rogue, but I’m sure whenever he visits he’d be nothing but respectful, he’s very shy and easily startled and trusts Strum and Jessica. I think Lana and Strums brother are helping him with that, though I’m not sure he’s actually happy for what they may see as help.” Like just being loud and crazy because he’s there and they want him to get use to it and be less jumpy so they can take him out and Lana could eventually play with him.
Nate shrugged to show she couldn’t think of any others, “That’s seven that I think are sure things, and from them more will follow I’m sure. Jason was loved, but the sickness hurt everyone, many were hurt more than some of the others, they can’t all speak at once, but I think the pack is ready to start being feared a little more.” She certainly was that’s for sure, compared to her normal work, her evil-doing for the pack had been limited to what she felt was like tapping a bunny on the nose with a carrot in comparison. Glancing over at him she offered him a reassuring smile, he was probably going to be just fine. Jason didn’t seem like he would start any sort of rebellion and come after Laine, she trusted his judgement far more than that. He would sulk, pout, and over think himself crazy until he figured out whatever it was he needed to figure out. If he wasn’t about to protest Laine being Ulfric, it was not likely anyone else would. Looking back out the window, she pointed to her road, “This one up on the right, it’s the house all the way down at the dead end.” Just on the outskirts of town and nowhere, she liked having her privacy, but didn’t want to be too far from at least one pack member.

It had not been a decision he had made lightly, allowing both Strum and Jason to live. Laine was not a monster, though. He was not about senseless murder. At the same time, he was not about allowing everyone a second chance. Jason deserved his second chance. Strum had done nothing wrong; he had merely been an obstacle in Laine’s way. In that instance, it had been possible to simply overcome the obstacle without destroying it, and that had been what he had done. And Strum thought more of him for it. From what Natalya was saying, the majority of the pack had thought better of him for it. Good, because he would do it again if given the chance to do it over. Especially because he had gained his biggest ally from it all.
“Strum has definitely been my biggest help,” he informed her, knowing she had known this. He had not exactly kept his newfound friendship and alliance with Strum a secret. Jason could not have possibly taken that well. Laine knew that Strum and Jason were close. He had hoped that Strum supporting him would have helped the former Ulfric see reason. And it had, if only in the sense that Jason had not insisted on a fight to the death. Laine had feared that, and he could not have been more relieved that he had been wrong. He had been a good man with a good heart. His heart, however, had been what had been his downfall.
Laine hadn’t lost anyone to the Sickness. No one he had any personal ties to. He had no idea how it felt to watch a loved one die from it. That was where he could not help people. He could comfort his wolves, but he could not empathize. Would that be enough? They were his, though. They had always been his. He loved them all from the very beginning. Each death had hit him as hard as if they had been his own flesh and blood. They may as well have been. They were his wolves, his people, his family. With a nod to his own thoughts, he assured her, “I will not allow anything that severe to happen again. I swear it.” He would guard them with his own life, and take the lives of those who dared to threatened the safety of his wolves.
She spoke of invoking fear, and Laine could not have agreed more. He wanted their enemies to tremble simply at the name of their clan. No one would dare threaten his people again. Never. “The pack will regain its reputation, I can promise you that,” he said. Returning her smile, he continued with, “That is where you come in. I expect my Bolverk to do the duty her title requires of her.” Not that he doubted her wiliness to work for the pack. Natalya seemed more than willing to do as she must. If he didn’t know better, he would have said she was relieved to be getting the opportunity to finally prove herself.
Pulling onto the road she pointed out, he nodded towards the house as he pulled in front of it. “This one?” he asked.

It didn’t shock her that Strum was already being helpful to him, it was what he was good at really. Even when he didn’t expect to help others he seemed to be the one with the strays on his doorstep...no he was never that lucky, they were already in his home by the time he found them. Nate couldn’t understand it either, but she agreed with the impulse that if you needed someone to turn to, Strum was a good bet of not only being level headed, he’d be honest and he’d offer what help he could. He would probably be very busy now, and she as well dealing with the change in power, making sure every pack member knew and adjusted to the new leadership.
He didn’t need to make any promises, yet hearing him say it brought her some comfort just the same. While no one could guarantee anything really because she knew life was unpredictable like that, she could feel that whatever evils may come to try and prove him wrong, would not do so without being a bloody mess and going over his dead body. With his alphas beside him, and his bolverk allowed to be as cruel as she needed, no one was going to touch this pack very easily anymore. Work had alway brought her peace of mind when she needed it, she had never thought she would be using work for what she felt was considered good. Nate had not pictured herself in what was essentially a family and needing to take care of them, keep them safe.
Yet now that she was in this picture, she found it hurt her chest to imagine leaving it. At his comment that she would be expected to do her duties, she couldn’t help but smirk, and nod to show that the house was hers, “Sweety I’m warning you now, I will probably be far above what you’re expecting.” Jason hadn’t known what she did really, but he’d gotten a handful of glances at what she could take, and you couldn’t really survive a lot of that without giving them something more in return. Nate hoped she’d never actually need to back this up, but she also knew that if someone did try anything stupid, and she was allowed to punish them, Laine would get the results he was hoping for. They were kind, but they were strong, and they would not let anyone else take anymore of the pack away.
Hoping out, she was happy remembering that the day before and after the full moon were trap free days. Tensions could get just too high to deal with and sometimes she admitted the two could get out of hand at the full moon. Lana would never actually test her dominance, but it was difficult to be competitive in that nature without her wolf wanting to keep taking it to the next level. Using her keys to let herself in, she didn’t bother with the lights, the rising sun was already filling the house softly enough and she felt it was much more comfortable in the dim light than the bright.
Waiting for him to walk in, she shut the door and locked it out of habit. It taught Lana to either remember her key or learn to break into the house without damaging anything. The girl didn’t know it yet, but Nate trusted that eventually she’d catch on that her sponsor was trying to teach her new skills, the girl had a lot of potential when it came to sneaking around, Nate was hoping to find a job out of it. A Job where you could be nobody and do something you were good at.
Slipping past him to the kitchen, she nodded towards the island counter surrounded by tall chairs, “Make yourself at home, can I get you a drink?” She offered, the threatening Bolverk seemingly disappearing beneath a friendly hostess. Opening the fridge, she pulled out all the eggs, bacon, butter and potatoes she could find. The night had been stressful and she was starving. Nate was also aware that if she was hungry, Laine was probably more so from his fight with Strum Jasoon. “Any particular way you like your eggs?” Not that she cared, he would normally eat whatever the hell she decided to make him, but for today he could have a say in it.

With a nod Laine did as instructed, taking a seat at the island Natalya motioned to. He rested the heel of his shoe on the bottom of the chair and leaned his body against the back of it. “Uh--” he started, thinking about her question. “Coffee if you have it.” If he was going to be with Natalya for the morning, he was going to need something to keep him going. His body was almost spent, and he still needed to drive home.
Then she offered food, and the Ulfric heard his stomach let out a low grumble in excitement. An embarrassed laugh touched his lips and he flushed red for a moment. “Whatever you make is fine,” he admitted, nervously rubbing the back of his head.
He had so many questions he wanted to ask her. The things they’d talked about hadn’t even covered half of them. Right then, though, he was so tired he didn’t want to do any more business. There would be plenty of time for that later. Now that the pack was actually safe and not just in a lull between bad things, Laine could relax for just a moment.
Laine stretched his arms out across the counter before folding them together and laying his head in them. He shut his eyes and just laid there. The sizzle of oil hit his ears, the smell of bacon and other breakfast foods cooking wafting over his senses. He enjoyed the silence for a moment, and the cold of the island counter against his face.
Right before he drifted off from finally having a moment to relax, Laine said back up. He stretched again, groaning as he did so. “Thank you, Natalya,” he said. He didn’t specify what for, but she was a clever woman; she’d figure it out.
Whether he wanted to admit it or not, Laine needed the help. He could handle the whole pack on his own, but he needed them to know he was a friend and not a tyrant. It was his job to protect them - to keep them safe. Having the higher ranking members of the pack on his side was the best way for him to achieve that. If the respected members trusted him, the lower ranking ones would follow. And for a threatening Bolverk, Natalya seemed nice enough.

Within moments the little werewolf had multiple things going on the stove to get their breakfast out of the way. Coffee was before him in a few seconds before she began sipping at her own. It took a moment for her to realize a very comfortable silence had filled the room, Natalya enjoyed nothing more than someone she could sit in a room with and not feel the need to talk. It was easy to tell they were both very tired, honestly she should have sent him straight home to get some sleep but if she was going to be doing her job for the pack, she wanted to make sure she knew who she was working for. That and he wasn’t all that bad to look at but those were thoughts for a later day when he was drifting to sleep on her counter.
Smiling at how easy it seemed for him to relax, she kept quiet while everything finished. His thanks finally brought her attention back to him and she smiled, not sure which he was thanking her for, so she just assumed it was an overall thanks for not being hostile and probably being overly friendly for someone he had just met. Nate trusted her instincts though, she naturally found herself easily comforting and friendly to those she did not feel she would ever need to be violent towards. Laine had good intentions for these wolves, she was going to do what she could to make sure those intentions were not interrupted.
Natalya found herself wondering if Jason had told anyone about their very short, but still very intimate relationship. Chances were possibly Strum had figured it out on his own, but she could not see him discussing it with anyone else, part of her even doubted the woman he was with knew who he’d been sleeping with just days before running after her. The thoughts alone made her blood boil and she forced herself to focus on the present, Jason was already paying his debts, being angry at him for his feelings was not going to change anything.
Piling food on their plates, she slid one in front of him before hopping onto the seat across, at some point there they had planned to have some sort of conversation but until he had some food in his system he probably wouldn’t be able to focus on much else. “I’m you’re Bolverk now, you won’t need to thank me for anything, I only do the things I want to do.” It was nice to hear, but she had gotten use to not hearing ‘thank you’ anytime she did a good job, she never did anything she didn’t want to after all. He needed to do what Jason couldn’t, he needed to use his strengths to his advantage, to realize her job was to do things for the pack without worrying about whether or not someone remembered to say thank you. Sometimes saying thank you was hard, especially if the task you completed wasn’t exactly ‘clean’.
That thought only caused an avalanche of them to follow and she knew right away what topic she wanted to bring up first. It wasn’t a pretty topic, at least it hadn’t been for Jason but she had to know if Laine agreed with what had been decided. Now halfway through her food she paused to grab a drink before finally breaking the silence. “Do you agree with Jasons’ final decision for Connor?” She sure as hell did not, after hearing what he had done she had almost killed him without waiting for anyones decision. A chain had been placed on Jess’s neck and nothing made her more angry than their own kind trying to chain up any of them, let alone one of the kindest wolves in this pack. Jason falling for his pathetic excuse of being under that blood sucking vermin spell had almost earned him a broken nose.
