Having time to dwell on her current plans had not actually helped the new Ulfric at all. It seemed every time she was convinced one way, her brain reminder her of why she should feel differently. Briar’s words continued to bother her to this day, echoing in her ears as if he could send it to her thoughts every time she remembered it. ‘I have to ask how you managed to be so weak but...some things need not be explained.’ She was not fucking weak, yet everytime she tried to think of ways to make him eat his words all she could picture was ripping his sassy tongue out and attempting to shove it as far down his throat as she could reach. Which was not good considering that would probably ruin what chances of a peace treaty she currently had with him.
It had barely been two weeks that she’d been in Page, she still couldn’t tell if she was making the right decisions or merely just convincing herself they were doing the best they could with their situation. Was she? Was she really making the best decisions? Should she have gone to the Master vampire or could she have simply moved in and acted as if she had no idea he even existed? The doubt was enough to drive her mad, some nights she wanted to pull her hair out from frustration of not being sure of what the hell she was doing. Her parents had been in charge of this, they had not had very long to prepare her let alone teach her about making decisions for an entire group of people. The only thing that mattered was keeping them safe, reminding them that they were strong and no one would hurt them without going through her first.
Yet she needed help, that much was clear, and she did not know if asking for help would make her weak or wise. It wasn’t like she was asking for more wolves, for another ally, no she simply needed advice. Laine was the closest Ulfric she could think of who might have any good words for her about being new to leading. He hadn’t been at it long, but she’d only good news about how the clan was doing, especially in terms of how they were recovering from losing a large amount of their numbers. They seemed threatening, but not in a bad way or else she would not have even bothered to contact him for his help. She’d made it clear she just wanted to talk, exchange notes almost on how they were handling different things. See how he had or was handling the vampires in his area and if she should kick herself for doing it wrong.
Not that it was any of his damn business who she met with, she was making it a point to not inform Briar of this meetup. He’d either mock her more about being weak and seeking out help from others, or see it as her gathering forces to be a threat, or both and really neither of those situations sounded pleasant. She couldn’t trust him though, hell she could barely speak to him when they did attempt to discuss things and that was mainly because feeding him had only happened once, yet she was stll not sure how she felt about it. It left her vulnerable while it gave him power, it was suppose to be a sign of peace but part of her still felt like one of these days he’d refuse to let go.
Sighing, she shoved her thoughts aside as her cab pulled up outside the address Laine had provided her with. It would do her no good to be frustrated right now, he would already know she was on edge, no point in taking it out on a stranger who had genuinely seem interested in giving her what help he could. Part of her wondered if she could simply drop to her knees and ask if her wolves could join his own here. Move them all here and give the rule to someone else, his wolves seemed safe here, hers could be too. That to her though, that seemed weak, shoving your title on someone else just because you didn’t know if you were ready for it or not. Her people would never look at her the same, these were her fathers wolves, her mothers, and she couldn’t let Briar be right about her being weak. She had to figure out what she was going and learn if she would be stepping on toes too hard or not hard enough.
Getting out, she paid the driver, though knew another would be taking his place in mere hours to ensure she was back in Page later this evening. Just because she didn’t think he would keep tabs on her and her wolves, didn’t mean he wouldn’t, or that no one would notice her absence if it was longer than a few hours. It wasn’t like her to leave her wolves alone for long, almost like a mother leaving her babies unattended with predators around, if she was gone too long, it was raise more questions than she had the sanity to deal with. Making her way up to the door, she did her best to smooth out her clothes and hoped her face looked less tired than she felt as she knocked and quietly waited for the Ulfric to answer. The friendly smile thankfully didn’t seem as difficult as the others once he finally answered, “Hi, Laine right? I’m Andrea.”

There are days when it seems the sun takes the longest to peek out over the horizon. As if it were avoiding the world. Those days were becoming more and more frequent for Laine since he had taken the Ulfric title in Phoenix. He had known from the beginning it would be tiring keeping up with the pack and his job – and now his social life on top of it – but it was possible he had underestimated exactly how tiring it would all be. It got easier every day, and he knew once he started to actually schedule and plan things out he could work in some time for sleep.
Some days Laine didn’t even notice the sun until he stepped out of his office. It helped him to work with the shades drawn, the only light assisting him being the lamp on top of his desk. This was one of those days. Laying aside the red pen he used to correct and grade papers, Laine rose from his desk and stretched. The moment he threw open his office door light assaulted him. It disoriented him for a moment, causing him to stand in the doorway and blink until he could see well enough to head into the kitchen.
A pile of dishes waited in the sink, while a pot of cold coffee sat beside the sink. He contemplated for a moment just microwaving a cup of it, but shook his head and decided against it for the sake of flavor preservation. Groaning, he dumped the wasted coffee into the sink and started on making a fresh pot. It wasn’t even for the caffeine boost anymore, but the comfort and familiarity.
The sunlight streaming in from the window above the sink woke him a bit more than the coffee would have. He looked to the dirty dishes again and resigned to clean up the mess while he waited for the pot to finish. Running the hot water and neglecting the cold, Laine piled and sorted dishes on the counter as he filled the sink with soap (maybe a bit more than was necessary). Washing what had been left out, he was reminded of all the chores he had been putting off for quite some time. His house wasn’t in complete disarray yet, but it was on the verge.
Someone knocked on the door. Laine had more company since his plans to take the clan had been made clear, and it seemed the flow of people who would need his attention had not even sort of slowed since then. Turning off the water and drying his hands, he headed to answer the door. Opening it, he smiled and nodded at her introduction. “Andrea,” he repeated, holding his hand out to her, “It’s great to finally meet you.”
Stepping back, he opened the door a bit more. “Come in,” he said, “Sorry if it’s a bit of a mess. I’m a bit more disorganized lately than I’d like.” Shutting the door behind her, he led the way back into the kitchen. While he had looked forward to meeting the new lady Ulfric of Page, he was not about to talk business without a cup of coffee. “So what can I do for you?” he asked as he busied himself pulling two mugs down from the cupboard and offering her one.

Taking the offered hand, she almost felt a sense of relief at the contact with another werewolf. Even though it was very clear in seconds that he overpowered her hysterically he didn’t seem like the type to be very cruel to those in need of help. Not that she would be asking him to fight any battles anytime, it would just be nice to know they would have friends they could turn to if things got tough. More importantly though, after her lovely bike incident, she wanted to make sure the pack might have somewhere to go if anything were to happen to her.
While there had been a very bad incident recently with this pack, Laine was a new alpha and she had heard nothing but good things of the current alphas. Once her hand was free she followed him inside and took the offered cup with a smile. Coffee would hopefully calm her nerves, lately talking to new people had become difficult. It was always hard to tell how people would react to you, and when you’ve been surrounded by people who want to kill you it made talking to strangers a bit tough. Though this already seemed like it would be a million times easier than talking to Briar.
Sipping at the hot beverage she looked away for a moment as his question as she tried to think of how to word her reply. Or where to start really considering she was probably here to talk about a few things. “I...well I guess a few things really. I have not been Ulfric very long and did not really expect to have the position so soon so I honestly could use some advice.” Pausing she had made the attempt to at least make eye contact, but at her next request they fell back to her coffee.
“I may also be here to ask for a favor. It’s nothing you should have to go through with soon, or anytime in the future if things go how I hope...but nothing really seems to be going the way I want it lately so I feel it is better for me to play it safe.” Someone always seemed to have something against the were community and they always seemed to find her pack. With so few wolves she even knew how much of a laugh many of them found it that they were technically still a pack.
Sighing she figured being blunt about the first topic would probably make it easier to ask for help after. “I’m not sure how much you heard about us, but chances are they were true. We’ve seem to hit nothing but bad luck lately and I have no idea if I’m doing something wrong. My pack has enemies when they do nothing to harm anyone, I don’t know how to keep evil people away from them they don’t seem to be very worried about toying with us.” He parents had been a warning from those people, and even though their new city was going well, that didn’t mean it would stay that way forever. Cruel people often waited a long time before showing their true colors.

When she took the mug from him, Laine turned around and began filling his own. The warmth in his hand combined with the rising aroma did its part to wake him ever so slightly. A yawn came, his empty hand moving to cover his mouth as he did so. Rubbing away the itch sleep deprivation brought to his eyes, he listened to Andrea answer the question he had asked. He knew he must have seemed so rude considering their meeting had been arranged, but he had so much trouble as of late keeping a good schedule. It was all starting to overwhelm him, and at this point he could neglect his responsibilities or he could neglect his sleep. Not wanting to let anyone down, Laine had chosen the latter.
“Truthfully, I haven’t been at it for very long myself,” Laine confessed, “but I’m more than happy to offer you any advice I can.” As much as Laine had prepared for the position – all the time and effort he had put into readying himself for everything – there had been some things he had either not accounted for or had underestimated. The only thing that kept him going was he assured himself it would get easier with time. That and he was hellbent on not letting his heart and human nature get in the way of how he governed his pack as had been the mistake of the previous Ulfric. It was for their benefit he struggled.
Andrea’s nerves were made more and more obvious every time she averted her gaze from him. Raising the mug to his lips, he sipped and nodded as he listened to what she had to say. Laine knew more than he probably should have about her pack’s troubles. Considering all the issues the Phoenix pack had with wolves from within their own ranks, he thought maybe it was best if he knew those around him as well as possible. Scouts had become invaluable in the most recent of times. Both in fear of insult and in fear of destroying a possible alliance, Laine decided it would be best to leave that information out for the time being.
He knew where she was coming from as far as enemies were concerned. While Laine had not been a member through all of Elijah’s reign and the Thirty Year War, he knew more than he cared to about those who wished harm upon his people. Precautions had been set into play to make sure nothing as horrible as had befallen the pack would ever come to pass again – at least not under his rule – but there was no guarantee he could catch all the crooks. That scared him, and it was because of that fear that he wanted to reach out to Andrea and her wolves.
Nodding, Laine said, “I understand that completely. My pack has also had its fair share of bad run-ins in the past few years.” If she had paid attention to news of any of the local packs at all, she would have heard most of the troubles the Phoenix clan had to deal with. Elijah’s war with the vampires and then the Sickness which spread outside of Phoenix, it had affected not just Phoenix. Even though she had only been Ulfric for a brief time, Andrea certainly would have heard of it while she was still just an Alpha.
His mug made a click against the counter as Laine set it down. Folding his hands together to keep from rubbing at his face, he instead chose to run a thumb along the back of his opposite hand in a subconscious act of self-comfort. “I did my best, but that sickness,” shaking his head, he wasn’t sure how to vocalize his thoughts. His gaze dropped to the floor for a moment as he gathered his words. Swallowing a bit harder than necessary, he looked back to Andrea and continued. “Well, there’s no way of keeping things like that quiet,” he finally concluded.
The dark thoughts and memories wouldn’t solve anything, and Laine knew that. While he knew he needed to keep in mind the past to avoid repeating the same mistakes, there was no sense in dwelling on the bad of it all when things were finally looking up for him and his people. If a lack of sleep was the worst thing he had to worry about, then he would have to say he was doing pretty good. “I have given a significant bit more power to my Bolverk as of late. Have you considered something similar?” It was something he had thought over for months and months before taking on the clan himself. Jason had not been man enough to delegate the power of things which should have been done to prevent the mess they ended up in, but Laine knew when to admit he couldn’t hold all the power. He wanted his enemies to fear him, and the best way to do that way to give the power of fear to someone who could enforce it.
“I know it might not be feasible with a pack as small as your own,” he continued. Her pack was significantly smaller than his own. Laine personally headed just under four thousand wolves. There was more than enough wolves to spare for jobs elsewhere as long as they were willing. And chances were with such a large pack, someone was more than willing. “Maybe I could spare a few of my own to help,” he suggested, “If you would like, that is.” Surely there was someone willing to relocate for the sake of another pack’s safety.

Why the fact that he was tired brought her comfort she wasn't sure. Maybe it was just knowing that not everyone was having as easy a time at ruling people as she had thought they were. Even with all their recent problems, this pack had managed to stay roughly in one piece and had managed to prove they were not to be taken lightly. Andrea wanted to be able to do that for her people without putting them in jeopardy. His uncertainty of what to suggest was not a surprise, she hadn't been sure what questions to really ask.
Thankfully, he found it easy to find advice, and his Bolverk recent power allowance had not been kept quiet. Having an evil-doer was suppose to be threatening, Laine had allowed her to demonstrate what their pack was capable of if pushed too far. While granted there were enough close to her that she would be happy to ask to step up to the task, she had a hard time truly picturing anyone filling the position as flawlessly as his own. Then again he and his Bolverk seemed to get along very well, maybe until she found someone she could truly trust and rely on to do terrible things she should make herself responsible.
"You're right, I don't really have those kind of numbers to fill many positions. I have some alphas...but I doubt their ability to be...well violent really. A Bolverk is only as scary as their Ulfric allows, you being able to give her the final order on how to carry out a punishment makes you scary." He was offering her wolves, and part of her almost jumped at the opportunity but she found herself shaking her head.
"I appreciate the offer and I'm sure someday my wolves would be happy to add more numbers, however I feel like if I have to borrow my power from someone else I'm not scary enough on my own." That was it, she just needed someone to teach her how to start learning when people were lying no matter how clever their tricks. Teach her not to hesitate when lives were on the line because sometimes you just needed to rip someones throat out for what they've done to others.
"I would however greatly appreciate you and your Bolverks help in other matters, if she can teach me some of her tricks, i may be able to be my own Bolverk long enough to get my numbers back up and my alphas a bit stronger." Even if none of them ever wanted the title of Bolverk in the future, she'd be happy being the only one who had to deal with hurting others. "I can't ask any of them to do anything I'm not willing to do myself first. Maybe if enough of us relocate our spines the rest of the pack with find theirs." It was natural to be afraid and vulnerable after such a heavy loss, but Andrea had hoped for so much more fight and most of them just seemed as tired as she felt.

He knew well before he suggested that her numbers might not allow her to assign the position to any of her wolves. His offer of sending someone to her and her wolves would always remain open, because he knew how much it helped to have someone who could carry out orders regardless of what those orders might be. Finding a wolf to be Bolverk was difficult, and finding one in a pack as small as hers was near impossible. For the time being, it just made more sense for Andrea to act as her own. She had to make her enemies fear her first before she had any hope of scaring anyone off.
Which – according to Andrea – Laine had no trouble with. He didn’t know whether to be flattered or insulted. "Thanks," he said, shaking his head in amusement. He couldn't help but laugh at the idea of anyone being afraid of him. That was the whole point, though, wasn't it? He needed people to believe he was capable of following through on any threats made. Three needed to be no doubt he would protect his pack and his people through any means necessary. Even amongst his allies they needed to fear his reaction should they choose to withdraw their allegiance to him. Andrea seemed like a good woman, though. Laine did not fear her nor her actions.
She was right, though. There was no way any other pack (or any threat for that matter) would take her seriously if she needed to move wolves from elsewhere. And on top of that, her wolves might not trust one of his as readily as they would need to in order for a Bolverk to be effective. "I completely agree," he said, setting his mug on the counter and leaning back against the sink. "Just know the offer remains open should you change your mind." It was important she trusted him, even if her own wolves didn’t. He needed her to understand they were allies, and Laine did everything he could to help his own.
The idea of his Bolverk leaving the city, even for a short period of time, brought about a visible sadness to his features. It was becoming more and more difficult for Laine to deny the fondness he had developed for the woman, but that was none of the lady Ulfric's business. In an attempt to mask the look with sleep, he rubbed at his eyes with the back of his hand. "I'm sure I could convince Natalya to offer you a bit of help where needed," he finally agreed, knowing the suggestion only made sense and that she had not made it in bad taste.
Andrea wanted first to set an example for her people and those who wished them harm. She needed to be able to bring her wrath swiftly upon those who would try to win her over as the last threat had. Laine could not have shared that sentiment any more if it had been his own pack. And, in fact, it had not too long before. "Yeah," he nodded in agreement, "It might be best if you set an example to be followed first. Just let me or my Bolverk know if there is anything we can do to help you." He needed to keep his alliance with the other packs strong, as hard as it was going to be considering the mess that had been made under Jason’s reign.

The offer was always open, the thought was reassuring that just because she had turned down the offer now, didn’t mean he wouldn’t still extend it later. Yet the look on his face had her worried she had said something out of place, did the idea of his Bolverk training her worry him? Doubtful, the woman was very unlikely to ever turn against him let alone leave his pack for another. If Andrea had said something out of place though, he didn’t seem it important to point out. Perhaps he had wandered in his thoughts and gotten off the topic before them, she had found herself doing that very very often lately.
Sighing she sipped at her hot beverage before shrugging her shoulders almost in defeat. “I really hope I never have to come back asking for help, I feel like any times I reach out for any help it will seem like a weakness to those around us. I know that won’t be the case though, eventually I’m going to need help and I truly appreciate knowing I will have others to turn to.” Especially when that stupid leech back home seemed more than ready to test her to see just how much she would...no how much she could do to keep her pack safe. Andrea knew the vampire was mostly just pushing her buttons for his own amusement, but that didn’t mean that one night he wouldn’t change his mind about keeping things peaceful. What could she really do to stop him if he tried? Not much, maybe take him a few others down with her, but in the end she knew the vampires would overpower them. Hell the way things felt a damn pack of geese would win in a fight against her wolves.
Shaking the thoughts from her head, she reminded herself to have faith in her people. They felt defeated now, but eventually they would grow sick of feeling weak, of feeling lost, with time they would find themselves again and help her repair the family. Knowing they had allies with a strong pack would help, knowing two of the scariest wolves around were an ally would hopefully give them the courage they needed to start acting like wolves not mice. “Once my alliance with the local vampires is a little more...solid...I think we will be fine. I don’t think anyone in the area means to start a war with my people...but my parents thought the same thing so it’s very hard to know.” It had gotten them killed, trusting people, living so close to those who hated them.
Biting her lip for a moment, she wasn’t sure what else to really ask. How does one learn to be an Ulfric? It wasn’t like he could give her an instruction sheet to follow, most of it was going to boil down to her instincts, her gut reactions and her patience. She had no realized at first how much patience she would need to lead her people, but she was running very very low on it. Her people had never been so needy before and the only ones who stayed were the ones who could barely survived on their own apparently. Sleep, she needed to not only make time for more but she needed to actually find a way to sleep better.
“How are things here? I know you haven’t been at this whole Ulfric thing very long, how’re you holding up with it? Like your job, relationships...I’m just curious in general, you don’t have to answer anything you feel is too much.” Just met and here she was asking him how his job was going, how being Ulfric affected his relationships, trying to pry into his personal life out of curiosity but mostly to help distract the girl from herself for a while. For weeks it seemed the only thing she talked about was what happened, her pack, for a few minutes she just wanted to hear about anything else.
