The wind howled against the opening of the cave as Jason stepped out from its depths. Carrying a black duffel bag with him he stepped into the soft light of the outdoors, it was cloudy, and the wind smelled of distant rain. That told the werewolf two things, that the rain might make it to the valley today, and that there was going to be a dust storm soon. Stepping out of the small cave in the sandstone he surveyed the horizon. Sure enough he could see coming from the south the makings of a sand storm. A dark brown haze rising to meet the sky in the distance. It would be hitting the Valley soon and where the lupanar sat in the desert to the south it would be the first thing the flying sands hit. Jason had lived here his entire life, so he was familiar with the pattern.
Walking up the collapsed creek wall that led to the upper shelf of the wash, jason spotted his truck on the ridge that was the go to parking spot near the lupanar. Adjusting the strap of the bag on his shoulder as he walked he contemplated how today's session had gone. He was learning to manipulate the energy he found in the munin, the spirits of the dead of his clan that he shared a unique connection with. His witch blood gave him a small amount of magic that only seemed to manifest in regard to the munin Part of that was the fault of his upbringing and the other half was because he became a werewolf so young. He had neglected that part of his being. But that didn’t make it go away. His magic had grown close to the munin. He could connect with it anywhere it was present. Here at the lupanar, or at other hot spots like other lupanars from other clans and the many meeting grounds for his own clan here in the valley. His sister had been teaching him how to utilize the power he gained from that magic but he needed a lot more practice.
It was more of learning how to keep himself in control once he connected to it. If he wasn’t careful the spirits of the munin could overtake him. Trap him inside their memories and force him to experience their lives in their entirety. The first time he ever connected to the munin in this way he had been overtaken by the spirit of the former ulfric of the clan, Elijah, which had been a nightmare that lasted a week. He was better at it now. The trick was using his own identity to ground himself. The candles in the bag helped with that. They were scented with sage. Something Kim had told him helped with focus, the scent itself also gave him an aspect of reality to ground himself with. Jason had been skeptical at first, particularly when Kim told him that it was always candles for beginners. But he was grateful for them now as they were a great help. At this point he just assumed that he should just listened to her. He would never be at her level of mastery so it was best to trust her.
Jason felt good about today's work. No slips, no chasing the rabbit and best of all no Elijah. The man would always be Jason's biggest problem when it came to utilizing the munins power. But Jason was getting better at channeling the energy without letting the power overtake him, and there was so much power to be had. When it hit him it was like being hooked up to a power line. Learning to use it was going to be the challenge but it had been able to sustain him for a week without problem so he knew it could be used for much more.
Despite the practice today though Jason felt tired, though in that after a good workout kinda way. Reaching his truck he decided that it might be a good idea to wait until the dust storm passed. If he left now he would be on the freeway when it hit and that could be bad. So after throwing the bag of candles into the passenger seat Jason climbed into his truck, leaned the seat back, and closed his eyes. He concluded that he could wait out the sand storm and take a quick nap at the same time which he thought was worth it
