Eh, I'd say it's mostly a crapshoot nowadays. A lot of it does depend on the demographic you represent. I was a white middle class kid from New England who went to public school. In other words, come admissions time, I was pretty much fucked simply because EVERYONE who applied to the schools I did had the same background. I only applied to one Ivy [but applied to other top schools], and got rejected despite having pretty good SAT scores (and even higher subject test scores). I was top of my class, class president, played a sport, an instrument, tons of volunteer hours. If you're either brilliant [which I am not] OR just have some very strange thing they're looking for, they'll take you...maybe. Ultimately though its not the end of the world where you end up. If you're a bright kid, you'll be fine whether or not you go to a school with an Ivy League label. |

The interview really doesn't count for anything like... at all. Actually, if it means anything it's more a way for them to find a way to reject you. I had come to learn throughout my interviewing process that interviews VERY rarely help students get into schools, but if they're really bad they will keep you out. In fact, I was not even asked any questions during my Brown interview beyond the standard "tell me about yourself." She told me that the interview was more for me to get information about the school. I had interviews for UPenn, Dartmouth, URoch, and Georgetown too and they asked actual questions but straight up told me that it wasn't going to count for much. As far as SATs go, like I said I did really well on the reasoning test (except for the math section idk what happened there) including an 800 in writing. Only ONE of my subject tests were over 700 and I still got into one so... idk, don't worry about them too much. Just don't do all sciences, all math, or all history. They're going to want to see a diverse selection. Extracurriculars are what REALLY matter tho. Extracurricular > Essays > Class Rank > GPA > SATs > Interview. Acceptance into the ivies is probably one of the biggest crap shoots you'll ever experience. Yes, Cornell is rather simple to get into solely based on the fact that they accept more students than everyone else, but it's still unpredictable. I have no idea why Dartmouth thought I was a better fit for them than UPenn or Brown did, but I have concluded that the admissions people had some long, arduous fight over whether or not to accept me since I got exactly $0 from them ^_^. |

Yeah, when I did my interview the chick totally downplayed its importance and all, but I assumed that was just to get me comfortable. Although I'm not surprised to hear they generally don't count for much, I thought it was a pretty subjective means of rating someone. ![]() I've come to learn that the school you get into isn't anywhere near as important as the things you do while you're there, so I'm alright with having gone to UF. It's not Ivy League and it's not going to impress law schools in a year when I start applying to them, but it's given me five amazing semesters and a lot less academic stress than Harvard would have.

Dude, I had the EXACT same problems. My first semester (actually year) was awful. I ended up failing 1 class (I saved myself with Ds in 2 more because I did really well on my finals when I actually applied myself), and my GPA was at a 1.9 after the first year. This Summer I took 2 simple online classes, got an A and a B. And this year I took a couple easy classes, and 3 required classes, got a D in one, but 3 As and a B in the other 4. My GPA is now above 2.6. So, you can come back from a rough first semester, and in my case I was able to come back from a rough first year. I am also in a community college. But you just have to apply yourself more and it's really not that hard or all that time consuming. So stick with it then GTFO of a community college and attend a university. |

at PT name-dropping how he got into HARVARD after admitting he flunked his first semester of college, wherever he did go. If you are planning on going to grad school / law school / med school , I would MUCH rather have great grades from a non-Ivy rather than poor grades from an Ivy. And then there's the whole issue of going into debt for undergrad. I just can't fathom people who go 180K into debt for undergrad, then go to medical school and add 250K more of debt... Insane (unless Mommy and Daddy are funding your whole tuition). And then there's the kid who went to public university for undergrad on full scholarship and is now in the exact same med school as them. Plus there's always the question of being another face in the crowd or the big fish in the sea who can get great ECs and the professors' approval.Mikester, I think this thread should be titled Academia or something where we can all mope about our school woes.

PS - if you are doing poorly in your classes, I suggest watching Legally Blonde to inspire you. Reese is one of my favorite actresses of all time (perhaps even my all-time fave) and she plays the role perfectly. Plus it can inspire you to study really hard and own all those people who think they are better than you. Favo quotes~ "Thanks for inviting me to the party, girls. It's super fun!" [on getting into Harvard] "What, like it's hard or something?" "179!!!!!!" <3333 epic moment Oh, Elle Woods, you make my world go around.

<huge rant coming> I got three of my grades back today (I took 4 classes this semester) and I got 2 Ds and failed one of them the sad thing was that I failed ENGLISH out of everything. Mostly because I failed to turn in my final portfolio on time, it was due Friday at noon and I turned it in later on in the evening.I am just so frustrated with myself because prior to this semester I've been a relatively decent student, I've kept a 3.0 or higher for all of my freshman year and even in the summer semester I was enrolled in prior to this one - it's my fault, I just got lazy and put ORGs before school It's just a bad semester and many people can get through that, but it ruins any chance I have of transferring back to San Diego, where I lived prior to here in Texas, because now a uni is very unlikely to accept me. I missed the payment deadline for a mini semester so I can't quickly make up those two Ds/one F, and even if I substitute those three classes in for classes I'm already taking for the spring, I come up short for the 60 units I need to transfer - because I needed to pass those three classes AND all the five I have signed up for the spring. I'm not sure what to do. I already have the maximum number of units for spring, so I can't re-enroll in those three and take eight classes at once. Can I enroll at a seperate community college and take those there, along with the five at the CC I currently go to? Also, my dad is in the military and my brother and I share part of the GI Bill and I believe to continue getting benefits from it you have to keep above a 2.0 for each semester...or if you are below a 2.0 for one semester you're not in good standing with the Veterans Affairs and if you get below a 2.0 a 2nd time then they officially cancel it, so needless to say my dad is going to be so pissed at me when I tell him my grades this semester @_@ I just don't know how I'll make up those classes and take the classes I need to take for the spring to reach 60 units without having to stay in community college longer. That's not a big deal but I just really don't want to stay here in Texas longer than I thought I would have to. It's frustating that I want(ed) to go back home so much and regardless, did not put effort into school this semester. |

Oh Plummerz I could use some advice. I don't know if you're allowed to be enrolled in two different community colleges so that you can take more classes, for example. Another thing is that our school website's thingy that lets you register for classes is down until the 20th...I might choose to cancel three classes I'm enrolled in next semester to make up those three classes. I really don't have anyone to blame but myself, I didn't care about school until the eleventh hour when I crammed at the last minute and I still didn't do very well on my finals.

Ok, well I have heard stories of people enrolling in another community college just to take extra classes. Not sure I'd suggest it based on how you're doing this semester and the GPA you need to maintain. Does your college limit the number of hours you take or the amount of classes you can take? I know, at mine, there is a "limit," but one can have special permission to exceed the hour limit, and it happens all the time. Literally, I know of tons of people who take 22+ hours a semester and are fine. What's a mini semester? Because I was going to suggest a class (or 2? Idk if you can do that many) during mini-term, which at my uni, is during mid May to the end of May. Can you not take a few first session summer courses to fulfill your needed 60 hours? First session finishes up around the end of June or early July if I remember correctly. I'm positive you can do at least 6 hours of credit during those. Real life > ORGs. ALWAYS. Quit a game if you have to. Winning an ORG takes no precedence over just a letter grade in a single class, let alone many. This is your future we are talking about! The rest of your life! You can do it, GP. We love you here! |

Yeah, try to CLEP out of classes. They are basically exams that let you pass out of certain college level courses. I've never taken one, so I don't have any real knowledge there though. I think they are like AP tests for college kids maybe? I know they cost some money to take each exam, but it's worth it if you pass em! And I know, in addition to CLEPs, universities have math and foreign language placement exams where you can essentially test out of certain classes and earn yourself some extra hours just by doing well enough on a proctored exam. |
