I'm not worried about taking extra classes because I know that I can handle it when I try. I just didn't try this semester, and I got a huge wake up call. I think at our college the limit is 18 credits or so, because when I tried to register for that English class a few days ago I got a notice saying "sorry, you've already reached the credit limit", something along those lines. I guess I can ask whoever handles that sort of thing for permission and explain my situation. A mini-semester is when you can take a class that is only three weeks long (but three hours and five days a week) and still get the same credit for it as you would with a regular semester, but the school website said the payment date was the 3rd of December. I thought about just doing a mini semester after spring semester but the thing is, the mini semester that starts in a few days counts for Spring semester - so if I retake those classes in the mini semester after Spring, they might count for summer instead, which would be bad. Most schools want you to have 60 units by the end of spring and won't let you complete them in the summer, if you want to enroll in the fall. Yes, I'm taking a huge break from ORGs with the move and having so much freetime, I just lost sight of things and went trigger-happy on the ORGs.

Well you can't just enroll in classes at another school and assume they'll transfer over...and either way it's pretty impractical. Go to your advisor and request for additional credit registration. I don't know how it works everywhere but it might require you to provide justification for why you need to take more than the maximum...and in all honesty, since you didn't do too well this past semester, there's a chance they won't approve it (although if you were consistently solid before that, they might see this semester as a fluke). It's better to stay in college an extra semester than to overload yourself once and have all your grades suffer because of it. |

It's an STD you don't want to get. My school woes: I went to university for 5 years. Got a BA (Hons). Majored in International Politics, minored in Philosophy. By the end, my degree looked more like an Anthropology degree than anything else. Final evaluation was a 30-page undergrad thesis on whatever the fuck I wrote about. My GPA was somewhere around a 6.5 (out of 9), because my university is fucked and doesn't do it out of 4 like the rest of the civilized world. On the advice of many, yet against my better judgement, I ended up at a ... community college. Not that community college is a bad place or anything. It's more the people. They're functionally retarded - "Derp derp, these 300 words I have to write is so HARD. I don't know what else to write about!" Yes, I am being demanding and unfair on firsties. Fortunately, there's a happy ending. The program I'm in now is one year long. I finished the first semester today. (w00t.) The next program in the "sequence" is three years long and is MUCH more rigorous than the one I'm in now. Like, we have readings. OMG y'all, I haven't had those in ages. <3 And presentations and essays and research and SHIT TO FUCKING DO. Unfortunately there's a screening process (no retards kthx), but it's more than likely I'll get in. Do I ignore the retards I study with? Or try to mould them in my own image as hard-ass academics? |

The classes I got Ds in/failed were English, Calc, and Chemistry - Calc and Chemistry are required for my major, so I think that if I enrolled in them, regardless of which school, they'd transfer over? About CLEPs - yeah, testing out of Chemistry or Calc wouldn't work because I'm just not skilled enough in them to pull that off. I didn't pay attention for much of the classes so I'm just severely lacking in knowledge about them. I know there's a chance they won't approve going past the limit, the form I filled out requesting to retake English and go over the credit limit said that in order to qualify you needed to have never gotten lower than a B, and I've gotten two Cs before so I probably wouldn't qualify unless I talked to someone and gave some justification. I hope they'd see it as a fluke because prior to this semester I've been pretty consistant. I think an additional semester would be the easiest route too, but if I can avoid that I would probably try to cram all those classes in. I just miss San Diego and my friends, but I know I probably need to just suck it up and probably stay enrolled here at CC for an additional semester. Do universities accept applications in their spring term? |

Wait, bassoon, you got a degree in five years, then went to community college, and now you are back in a new four year program? Damn, so wishy-washy! GP, I don't see why they wouldn't accept students for the spring semester. I guess there is the issue of how to tally fall credits because class registration is usually during the fall semester. You'd have to check with your target university about that for sure. But at least summer courses would count for then! Maybe you could do summer classes, get enough credits and come home during fall. Then go to college starting spring? |

the only class that i'm on the verge with is my pre-calc class. i am horrible at math and i have the final tomorrow. if i pass the final (with a 70) then i pass the class and i'll have continued my record of never getting lower than a C (which i thought was failing? is D not failing?) but if not then i'm looking at a D in pre-calc

I know right! I guess I re-directed my studies. As much as international politics is cool, it's BORING as all fuck. People talking around a table about shit that goes on somewhere else really doesn't accomplish much. It's a weird sort of sequence. "1 plus 3", not "4". After a year, you get a certificate. That and two bucks will get you on the subway. (Brutal honesty here.) OK, fine, whatever. The 3-year program is pretty intense, and is equivalent to a degree, but isn't a degree. It's an 'advanced diploma'. They only call it that because my community college isn't licensed to grant degrees, but it's pretty much the same thing as an undergrad in linguistics/interpretation. The plus-point: I will never, ever run out of work, ever. |

GP, don't let this get you down. Do what you have to do to make up for your grades, even if it means staying an extra semester.
I just remembered you went to the same university as I did. I graduated with around the same GPA. I always hated that confusing 9-point scale. The only good thing about it is that since there were no letter minus grades, what's supposed to be B- is just called a B which makes you look better.

I hope things worked out for you Mikester. I recently read Stephen King's "Hearts in Atlantis" and the second short story in this book is an amazing story to read if you've ever been a student. It brilliantly captures the horror of feeling you haven't studied for exams. The difference in this story is that it's set in Maine during the Vietnam war so if you're a guy, and your grade point average isn't high enough, you get sent off to war to- you know- die. So keeping up your grade point average takes on new meaning. And in the story most of the main characters are addicted to playing this card game Hearts with each other for money, and many of them are flunking out because of this stupid card game, knowing it's stupid but thinking they'll just play one more hand.... can you imagine? The story is terrifying! And brilliant! Personally I never got less than a B in college, and nothing less than a B+ in my Masters BUT I got Ds in a few things at High School shows one can really improve academically if you're determined. Good luck!

I didn't flunk my first semester. ![]() And I didn't think I had specified the school I turned down, either, but whatever. Anyway, I think beatles is right. If you need to take another semester to get things in order, that's just what you'll have to do. It's a difference of a few months. The extra time investment can be worth the results. |
