The entire Season 6 was awful. And, yeah, it is definitely crazy town over there at Sucks. I did get drunk last night, because I still had my bottle of champagne that I had to celebrate the death of Kate that never happened. So, I downed it from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Now I have a hang over. Watching the 2 hour retrospective just made me sad over what happened to this show. Season 1 was so damned good. |

Tell me about it Pinot! Season 1 was soooo good. I was 15 and my English wasn't that great but I had to watch all the episodes when they aired in US. It just was that intensive and innovative. I went to movies tonight to see Prince of Persia and drank vodka cola with my friend. It rocked... I should have been drunk to enjoy Lost

I haven't read too many comments in this thread. I have a feeling people are fairly divided for the finale, even though all of my friends seemed to like it or even love it. I really enjoyed the finale. I think it's because I accepted the fact that the island mythology wasn't their focus a few weeks ago. All that said, I really really enjoyed the finale. I probably won't appreciate it as much when I eventually re-watch earlier seasons, but for now, I really dug the ideas they had about the afterlife/purgatory/whatever you want to call it. Really good stuff, at least in terms of characters. |

I posted this as a note on fb but I might as well post it here. It's a little "crazy" because I got way too philosophical about the afterlife but whatever: So I was talking to a woman at work today and we were discussing the finale. We both loved it, and then we were discussing the by-now accepted theory was that everything on the island was real, but Sideways-verse was purgatory, and that the finale was really showing how each character left purgatory and went to heaven. When you look at it this way, the finale really answered all the questions. So here is how I think each character left purgatory: 1. Kate - I think the moment she went to heaven was when she delivered Claire's baby. I haven't really liked Kate as a character but this to me made perfect sense. The first time she delivered Claire's baby Aaron, she then ended up with the baby and passed it off as her own. This was typical Kate -- goodhearted but wrong and deceitful at the same time. She was unable to get the baby back to Claire either in island life or life afterr the island (if she did indeed live a life after leaving the island). So in the afterlife, she finally gave Claire back her baby, and thus did the right thing. She went to heaven. 2. Sayid - his entry to heaven explained a couple episodes ago, when he let himself be blown to bits by the bomb. By doing that he uninfected himself, and proved his worth as a man, despite all his evil actions. He goes to heaven. 3. Sun/Jin - Sun and Jin were perhaps the most sympathetic characters of the whole series, but I think their entry to heaven happened in sideways-verse when Jin finally saw his baby with Sun. The family was reunited. They went to heaven. 4. Juliet - Juliet's entry to heaven happened when she delivered Sun and Jin's baby. Juliet was a good doctor who was forced to use her medical knowledge for evil purposes. Her work for Ben on the island put her in purgatory. When she finally was able to deliver a baby, her entry to heaven was guaranteed. And then she met up with Sawyer, her soulmate. 5. Sawyer - This one is fairly simple too. I think Sawyer entered heaven when he was finally able to reunite with Juliet. In the series we saw that Juliet was the one woman whose influence on Sawyer was completely good. This is the one that had me bawling like a baby, when they reunited. But Sawyer was able to go to heaven when he found the woman he loved. 6. Locke - Locke could enter heaven when Fake-Locke (MiB) was finally killed. Fake Locke was obviously not actually Locke himself, but I do think he was Locke's alter ego. He was everything Locke couldn't be in real life --athletic, strong, decisive, ruthless. But Fake Locke's death freed Locke's spirit. Locke realized he did not HAVE to be athletic, decisive, ruthless, and evil like his father. He accepted Jack's help and whether or not he could walk in Sideways-verse or heaven was irrelevant -- the point is he did not feel that he HAD to be like Fake Locke anymore. He accepted himself as he was, he made his peace with Jack, and he went to heaven. 7. Hurley - Hurley could enter heaven when he realized he had a purpose, and that was to lead the island. From the dialogue with Ben, it seems as if Hurley and Ben were benevolent leaders of the island, and did things "differently" than Jacob. I really liked this part of the series, the idea that Hurley and Ben lived for many years on the island in peace. 8. Desmond - they never showed what happened to Desmond, but it's implied that Hurley and Ben let him off the island. But Desmond's entry to heaven (with Penny) is clear. He has always put others ahead of himself, and the finale again showed that he was a selfless hero. In Sideways-verse (purgatory), he also forced Locke into accepting the surgery to walk again. 9. Ben - he wasn't ready to go to heaven yet. Of course Ben has done the most "evil" in the series, but the series finale gave Ben several acts of redemption. He saved Hurley. He decided to lead the island in a good and benevolent way. So it was clear from the ending that maybe he had to make his peace with Alex and Danielle, and then he'd go to heaven. But it wasn't clear. It's fitting because the character has always been so ambiguous. 10. Jack - Jack's death was the final scene of the show, and the episode was very Jack-centered. But I think Jack's entry to heaven was multistaged. Of course he killed the MiB, and thus saved the island. He also made Locke able to walk again. But I think Jack's entry to heaven ocicurred in the last seconds of the show, when Vincent laid down next to him (the other part of the show that had me crying). In Jack's case, his entry to heaven wasn't so much in what he did, but in that he was finally at peace with himself. He died not really knowing what would happen to the island, what would happen to his friends, but the control freak just realized that he had done all he could and that his time was up. And that's why I ultimately really loved the finale. I'm not a religious person by any means, but I do believe in the idea that people should die at peace with themselves and their actions. I like that LOST didn't tell us exactly what happened to Sawyer or Kate after they left the island, or how Ben and Hurley lived on the island. The important thing the finale emphasized was the importance of their experience together on the island, and that even after death they were still searching for each other. I don't think it "cheapens the whole six seasons." In fact I think it is a tribute to the all the fans, the writers made sure that every character's entry to heaven (or inner peace) was related to what happened on the show. And the ideas of redemption, dying with honor, making peace with both yourself and other people, those have been the big themes of LOST and that's what the finale was about. So I got all my questions answered. |

Here's my problem though grows... I think that if they wanted to go for a character-based finale like that, this needed to not be such a plot driven season. Actually, the final 3 seasons were all plot-driven but this last season was like a completely different show. A lot of the main characters were basically reduced to extras as the MiB, Jack, Hurley, and Sawyer essentially took center stage. The finale itself wasn't bad I don't think. But they needed to have a more appropriate season building up to it for it to be more accepted. Haters are always gonna hate, but they kind of invited this. |

well the thing is ... the more "answers-driven" episodes this season have sucked. For example that whole episode that was wasted on MiB and Jacob as kids. So I am really glad that the finale wasn't all about answering questions. It's like the producers and writers realized that the LOST fans would rather take a character-driven episode over getting "answers" and delivered. So that's what I loved about the episode. |

Two things I don't understand: 1. Why the fuck do Hurley and Ben need to protect the island if MIB is dead? There's no danger anymore 2. Why the fuck does everyone need to wait for Jack before they can "move on"? All of their lives should NOT be centered around one douchebag, sry. I didn't like the finale really lol. Oh and how anticlimatic was MIB's death? Getting shot by KATE? Because Jack couldn't handle it.

There will always be danger. The DHARMA initiative was a threat to the island as well. It had a protector before the Man in Black was even born. And it will have one after his death as well. I thought the finale was pretty good. Corny, sure, but considering how much emotional energy I had invested in this show (even after his lackluster final season), I didn't mind. I didn't expect shocking revelations because everything of any importance had already been addressed. The only things left to resolve were the characters, and we completely got that resolution. I do think the writers made two big mistakes throughout the course of the show, though, and they're the reason some people aren't satisfied: 1) Most everything that mattered was already cleared up by the time the final season got going. We knew ahead of time that season 6 would be it. It was the end of the road, and naturally for a show that was as mysterious as Lost, it was assumed that the end of the road would carry explanations. But since everything worth explaining had already been cleared up, the writers didn't feel obligated to address too much more as the show wound down to a close, instead opting to focus on the characters that had propelled the show for so long. It wasn't their fault how they treated their final season/episode, not really. They did what was logical at that point. But because they had already answered so much prior to that point, that point in the show fell flat for the people who were watching expecting more. 2) The basic format of the show didn't allow itself for a wholly satisfying conclusion. Whenever a new mystery was presented, we had to wait to get an explanation. There was no real way around it, not with the way the plot moved. There was going to have to be a long wait before we figured out what the black smoke was. That couldn't be helped, thanks to the nature of the show. But the inherent problem with such a structure is that by the time a grand answer is delivered, it doesn't tie up all the loose ends very nicely. Sure, we can finally be told what the smoke monster is, what drives it, why it does what it does. But by the time we get those answers, there's no real way for the writers to go back and explain every single thing the smoke monster has done. Why'd it kill the pilot? We can't really know because there's no neat, clean way for the writers to tell us. And if they go out of their way to explain one action, there are a million more left unaccounted for, and there's just no opportunity to provide those specific explanations. In effect, it's too late for that. And I think the combination of those flaws pissed off a lot of viewers, the ones who didn't realize the faults existed. I, myself, didn't expect a nice, neat ending in terms of mythology, so I was satisfied with the finale. My problem was simply in the story-telling of the final season. It was way too confusing. I don't mean the mysteries were overwhelming, which is what confused people in early seasons. I mean keeping track of who was doing what and why became too much of a hassle. Lost allowed me to keep my brain turned on while I was watching. That made it different from other shows, where I pretty much shut down my critical thinking altogether in order to enjoy them. Lost has always let me speculate about the grand mysteries. But that doesn't mean I want to have to keep a freaking chart of who has gone where and what they're doing and why they're doing it. The final season was way too confusing on that front. There was no order, and all too often, an episode would begin and I just wouldn't remember why X was in Y doing Z for some reason, while A was in B doing C for an entirely different reason. Anyway, in short, I liked Lost and I'm satisfied with it being over. I have a few questions left myself, but if I never get answers, that's okay. The important parts of the show wrapped up pretty nicely. <3 |
