This thread is horrible! People who have read the books only once, not at all or in the span of months discussing them? Oy vey!

In my opinion there is not a single bad Harry Potter book.

If you're going to try and invalidate other people's opinions, at least try to make it make sense. How long someone takes to read a book means nothing when it comes to discussing it  . Don't get so butthurt.

I'm always amazed at how defensive HP fans get of the books or of the author. Insult one thing and it's like their world crumbles  It's embarrassing.

HBP is a piece of garbage. Seriously. All it is is filler until the 7th book. Nothing memorable at all happens other than Dumbledore dying. And the Half Blood Prince... what relevence does he have? OMG the Half Blood Prince is SNAPE!! So? So what? What relevence does this have to the plot at all? None. And the book is named after it. I seriously don't understand it.

I didn't mind that it was mostly filler for the last book or mostly flashbacks but it was crappy filler and crappy flashback. And yes, the Half Blood Prince thing was soooo anticlimactic.

Yeah that's what some people say about Survivor seasons too, but this is a ranking of just HP books, so they can only be judged next to each other.

And HBP was :alien I didn't like DH much either. :<3

I do think it has something to do with it. If it takes someone MONTHS to read it, it is the same if you watch a movie in 5 minute pieces over a period of weeks and the comment on it. What can you get out of it? It will never take you on a ride because you stop reading. You won't remember everything you read ages ago so you may lose important thematic things and references and stuff.

I strongly disagree with what you said.

Oh and if someone waited a year to read the book after it came out, they OFFICIALLY lose the right to call themself a fan.

And I didn't say the books or the author is perfect. There are faults. But to call one of the books bad is just ridiculous in my opinion.

Well, no. I read the book. I know what happened. You could easily argue that taking longer to read it helps you pick up on more detail and that someone who reads it fast isn't as likely to experience it all because they're going too fast. But whatever, I read it, and I have every right and ability to comment on it. It didn't take me so long to read it because I love reading slowly, it took me so long to read it because it just didn't hold my interest. A book that doesn't hold your interest is bad, just like a movie that doesn't hold your interest.

Just like Survivor, I watched the seasons I disliked. Even though it's Survivor and I love Survivor, I'd still say it was a bad season, no different than the HP books. I like the series overall but I think HBP is a stain on it.

This is how I feel. Sure, some are lackluster compared to the others, but still brilliant compared to other series. I would never call a Potter book bad, maybe one worse than another, but never a "bad" book.

ETA: I like Mikester's analogy. There are bad seasons of Survivor, but they still count as my favorite show of that year and of all time.

Azkaban was actually probably my least favorite.

That probably has more to do with the binding breaking in my original copy...so it was harder to read than anything plot related.

I disagree with not being a "fan" because of how long it takes you to read a book or not reading all of them. That's a little ridiculous IMO. I love the Harry Potter books or anything HP in general, and no one can say otherwise - that's not changed just by not reading a book yet. I guess I'm not a fan of Survivor because I haven't seen the fifth season, despite knowing a ton about the other 19 complete ones. :shrug

Azkaban is also the best movie IMO

So what? Most opinions are decided based on something random like that which have nothing to do with the book. I thought the first two were not as good as the following ones (minutes HBP) mostly because I was younger when they came out, and I got more into it as the series went on. They were still awesome, though, and the same can be said about the sixth book. It was just horrible compared to the others after all the anticipation I had.

As far as reading it in a day and reading it over a longer span of time like HD is saying, what a stupid argument. Yes, I know I'm not the most qualified to rank them, but I like to read HP books slow (and a lot of times I reread entire chapters right directly after I read them) to pick up on the many details. I was young and didn't have the attention span to read an entire book in one night (hell, I still don't), but, believe me, I felt the ride. For most of the books I read one to three chapters a night (depending on how long they were) and feel asleep to what I had just read. Personally, I think that's as good a way as any to do it. I was older and more mature when I read the seventh book, and I didn't want to put it down the first time. That being said, I felt the rush, but I definitely missed a ton of the details.

4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book #5)

Posted Image

This is where it really gets hard because books 3, 4, 5, and 7 were all unbelievable, and they will all probably always be my four favorite novels.

My favorite parts included Dudley and Harry getting attacked by Death Eaters, the introduction of Luna, who became a huge character, Fred and George's pranks/joke shop starting with the money Harry gave them, and the O.W.L.'s because I felt I could relate. Dumbledore's Army was awesome, too, for obvious reasons, and I felt an extreme emotional hatred Umbridge that only a great book could bring out. Additionally, Sirius' death was ridiculously emotional for me. You'd think Dumbledore dying would be worse in the next book, but it wasn't completely out of left field. I mean I was sad when he died, but Sirius just seemed random as a war causality. Since the third book is higher than the fifth, it's clear I thought Sirius was awesome.

Why is it lower than the others? Uh...I don't know. Maybe I hated Umbridge enough, and it was weird for someone else to be instated as the Headmaster? I didn't dislike it, so I'm having a hard time explaining why it's lower. I guess I just had more of a connection with the others.

ETA- Also, fuck the movie for completely getting rid of Angelina's big part in the book and Quidditch entirely. They kind of screwed her over in the fourth movie, too, by not showing her chance to be in the tournament, but she was at least in the film.

I'll catch up on this later but the epilogue of the last book I agree with Mikester nearly ruined the 7th book for me. Like dear god they all marry their crushes and have kids named after the dead people and send them to Hogwarts? Jesus did Disney write that shit? I wanted one of the big three to die preferably Hermione.
2012

RRR7: Brendan (7/14)
Wolf's Revenge: Garrus (4/12)
Vertigo 11: Jaime (5/20)
RRR9: Laura (13/24)

I didn't have a problem with the epilogue. :shrug

(Also, just an FYI because of cardswin's post, there are definitely going to be spoilers about the 7th book for those who haven't read it.)

I feel like true rabid HP fans like ME can sit down and read any HP book in a day or two. We are just *that* obsessed.

But then again, I am too busy to go to DH Part 1 at midnight, which makes my heart wanna crawl out of my chest and start weeping. :( :( :(

Ew OotP. The first book that I had trouble getting through. Don't you hate how she spent like ten chapters on people trying to get Harry expelled which ultimately amounted to nothing? :eyes

Umbridge in the movie was  though.

Umbridge and Luna

Fun fact: Umbridge was my #2 choice of character when I played FML's Harry Potter game, even though she wasn't even on the cast list.

Call my logic stupid, call me stupid.

But imho you can't call yourself a true fan of something unless you've read/seen everything to do with the object of your fandom. Like I am a massive fan of LotR but since I've never read all of the books by Tolkien, and I have stopped and started The Hobbit many times, you won't see me critiquing it anytime soon.

And if it takes you months of WORK to make it through something it should ring bells.

I am not picking fights with any individual. Just my opinion.

I am the futhest thing from a fantard just that we are clear.
