I've been a fan of Tiesto for quite some time, but I think he pretty much sucks now, but a new song on his latest album caught me by surprise. "Feel it In my Bones" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNyvZv_r60I...JhXc&playnext=1

Anyway, I know a lot of people get upset when their favorite artists/bands "sell out" or "go mainstream/commercial" whatever that may mean. What does such phrases mean to you?

Since I know not everyone listens to house, dance and electronic music like me, other artists/bands that have been accused of selling out:
*Areosmith
*AC/DC
*Ice Cube
*Snoop Dogg
*Nickelback
*Pink Floyd

Wasn't Avril Lavigne always a mainstream pop star? Does she have like a secret thrash metal album or something from before she was famous.

Actually I think she started out trying to be anti-mainstream against the likes of Spears and others. She tried to brand herself as the "punk girl" but she failed miserably if I remember correctly, like her sales have.

Katy Perry was a conservative Christian singer before she became a big pop star, right?

I don't consider "selling out" as just trying to initially become mainstream. But rather abandoning the genre that initially got you famous for something more popular. Avril was the punk girl that gave her small success with her first album, but I think it bombed her 2nd album so much, that she completely changed to pop. You would NOT hear Girlfriend in her earlier stuff, so I consider her as a sellout for completely switching genres in hopes to get back on top.

I actually consider BEP to sorta be sellouts too. I hardly see any similarities b/w their original hip-hop and the shit they make now. It's all lame electric/futuristic/pop, with a few hip hop songs now and then. I don't get why they changed their genre since their old stuff was so much better, and I know most people prob don't agree with me on it but oh well.

Current BEP can be really catchy and fun, but it's all mindless songs about partying. Their first single with Fergie was their last real hip hop single.

Old BEP <3 even though I LOVE Fergie I just hate their current songs. The only one I've liked from the last two albums is "I've Gotta Feeling" and then "My Humps" other than that I kinda hate them. And their new song is shit.

AC/DC and Pink fuckin' floyd sold out? I could see Guns N Roses though

Btw, Nickelback sounds the exact same. Each and every song is basically the same song since they first came out. I don't know how they could have "sold out".

You forget David Guetta. He's becoming more and more mainstream and some of the shit he releases is terrible (the single with Rihanna).

For rap, T.I. is basically garbage now.

On the flip side, has anyone noticed some bands that were originally mainstream, taking the steps to become more artistic? Take for instance Coldplay, who are slowly making changes the right way and nothing drastic and terrifying like MGMT.

OMFG :dance I'm glad someone else is an old Guetta fan like myself. But I'm unhappy that he sold out. Once Sexy Bitch was released (which I actually liked), I knew it was OVER! **sobs**

While I do love his collabs with Kelly Rowland, there will be no more "Baby When the Light"s or "The World is Mines" :(

And Ors, I don't know who AC/DC or any of those rock bands are. I just listed them, because I've heard from friends who are rock fans that they sold out.

Oh, and I've ALWAYS loved MGMT and Coldplay no matter what they bring out. ^_^

Naz > Ors ^_^

I completely agree. I like One Love for what it was worth (mainstream dance) but it doesn't touch his older stuff. In fact, Deadmau5/Benassi/Buuren also seem to be following Guetta into mainstream territory, so be prepared to be depressed. On a positive side, Dada Life is owning shit right now.

The day of Guetta working with no names or anyone from his old stuff, except Chris Willis, is over.

Wth, serious man? I can imagine not listening to them on a daily basis but not knowing bands like AC/DC or Floyd is crazy talk. I'm going to dub you Astroline 2.0 aka strictly clubber.

MGMT's latest stuff was too much of a change from their previous album. I liked it, sure but they changed too drastically, unlike Coldplay.

Ok sorry Naz! ^_^ And yes, Astro and I are definitely strict clubbers. :drop haha My friends don't even bother talking about music in front of me, because they know I'm so completely, utterly, and embarrassingly ignorant. You can ask me about the latest mixes and whatnot, but yeah I just learned who Pink Floyd was last month.

Yeah, I was going to say Deadmau5 as well as someone going mainstream, but I didn't really know if anyone here besides my dear love Alffy (WHO NEEDS TO TALK TO ME MORE OFTEN) knew of him.

And honestly, I gave up on Benassi a while ago. :( I can't remember the last track I actually liked, it's been so long...

One band that I can say has always stuck to its roots, yet still been innovative in their music is GORILLAZ. Check our their newest album please and thank you.

omg, I'm still listening to Tiesto's Feel it in my Bones. :<3

Another personal fav of mine similar to Gorillaz is Kaskade (CHADDY <3). He moved away from his DEEP sexy ass house music and more into a euro pop feel. However, because he chooses the best vocalist out there, you're able to still feel the soul in his music. That's why he's by far my fav artist ever.

Haha, no problem man.

:o I don't think Astro is THAT bad. That's just freaky. It's like you live on mars.

Deadmau5 is sick. Anyone who knows the club scene, knows his shit. He's pretty popular right now.

Already checked it out and own a copy, thanks. Sick ass band. They never bore me at all.

Feel It In My Bones is awesome.

Kaskade is actually pretty sick sometimes. I'm not really a huge fan of progressive house but I can get into it. You need to check out Dada Life's remix of Kaskade's Dynasty.

Yes, I've been a die hard of Deadmau5 for quite some time.

**gasp** so I'm definitely looking into Dada Life after listening to that mix.

Ummm wtf have I not met you before?! I'm JaMalle and I love you.
