madhack - GODDAMIT I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS I COULD HAVE TOTALLY WON. I'm very conflicted about this. On one hand, my philosophy about talent shows like American Idol is that charisma and stage presence is totally part of each performance and someone with an awful voice deserves my support if they entertain me. On the other hand, AI is a singing competition, and I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be one too. Your singing voice is...lacking. You got kinda lazy with it as the song progressed, which left me with rather meh feelings. You've gotta put 100% into this, because in this competition, those who give it their all always have that refreshing feeling of enthusiasm that makes me want to give them my vote.

On the other hand, it's often pretty difficult for me to sit through an entire song, and with your video, I was willing to watch all 7:42. Not that I'll do that again. I'd suggest making them much shorter in the future, and watching how much you ramble. I don't mind you talking, but make it purposeful. Again, it's a singing competition, and your song should be the focus. But all that being said, I did like the visual element and the casual chat that preceded the song. By all means, keep that up. Just make sure the singing delivers as well.

Oh, and a note on your song choice - clever. You know your audience. Keep them in mind, and you could do well in this thing.

a fine frenzy - I'll admit it - women totally have the advantage in this competition. :lbf

But seriously, this was good. Not every note was there, but it was nice to listen to and you really nailed a few things that I know must have been tough to pull off. I'm trying my best not to be biased here (considering I love Taylor Swift and all), but I just don't have much bad to say about this. You held some key notes and have a really pretty range to your voice. It was never monotone and never got boring. Even with a fairly casual song, you managed to avoid losing energy near the end, and actually kept up an escalation throughout the entire song.

I'm going to go out on a limb right now and call you the winner of this thing.

Nick - This was a bit of a disaster. You mumbled your way through it, and I honestly never felt like I was listening to someone singing. You couldn't keep up with the lyrics, you sounded constantly out-of-breath, and every high note was just awful. I don't expect good singing from anyone here, but I do expect...something.

Next time, choose a completely different song. This didn't suit you at all. You couldn't hit the notes, you couldn't measure up to the intensity, and you were behind the lyrics every step of the way. With a slower song, I can get a better idea of what you're capable of.

alexi - This actually wasn't as bad as your performance in the first season. The song was much better suited to you, that's for sure. The interesting thing about your voice is that there's a lot of personality in it, and the slower parts of this song really allowed that to come out. I wasn't ever particularly impressed by the singing, per se, but you delivered a fairly entertaining (if repetitive) performance. In the future, don't be afraid to try to do a little more with your voice. Even if you don't hit the notes you reach for, it'll provide that needed variety.

At the same time, choosing a song more in your vocal range really gave you a great opportunity for improvement, and I'd stick with that when possible.

Alffy - Dude, all bias aside (that's going to be so tough for me, I know it :lbf ), you went all out on this, and it showed. The energy was there, the passion was there, and above all, it was fun. Your accent came out at times, which added that little bit of uniqueness, and the whole thing felt like a performance rather than someone absent-mindedly singing along to a song on the radio.

If I were to have complaints, I'd probably touch on how the whole thing did feel slightly repetitive. But to be honest, I think that was mainly the song's fault. I will say you should try your best to have an escalation of energy throughout the song, or else people will get bored halfway through. You came out of the gates strong, and you kept it up for the whole 4 minutes, but it would have been even better had you started off a little more withdrawn and blown us away as things progressed. You also got a little out-of-breath at a couple of points, but I can't much blame you.

And I loved you censoring yourself. :lbf

trickmind - Well, I can definitely say this wasn't what I was expecting. Your voice, if nothing else, is unique, and that counts for a lot. I don't know how much of this was forced (probably a lot of it), but it felt relatively natural and organic, and that's what you should aim for when putting on a full-on performance like this. I can't say I loved how high it was on some of the notes, and I can't say I care for the song. But it was interesting, and it showed talent. Of all the people in this competition, I'm most excited to see what you do in the coming rounds.

You've just gotta improve your song selection if you want to wow me. ;)

Fate's Offspring - Alright, I'll give it to you, the novelty factor worked and this was pretty damn funny. Don't know who's who in this song, but it's clear who the strongest singer is. If you can figure out how to sideline the guy who can't sing without needing to take a deep breath every second, you'd improve a lot. :lbf

But seriously, while the singing didn't particularly impress, this served its purpose as a performance. The question is, can you guys come up with something new and fun for the next round that's not just a rehash of what you did here? We'll have to wait and see.

Josseppe - I'm not sure what to say about this. I love this song, but this performance was...not the same thing. You know from the first season where your voice falls. Why would you choose a song like this? It's not you.

Even if I ignore the weird singing that might actually work with an appropriate song choice, this got kinda boring and repetitive. Each bit of the song kinda sounded a lot like the last. There's a lull in the song that's supposed to segue into a big lift, but it fell flat in this rendition. It's the only song of the group I really didn't feel like listening all the way through to. :shrug

**************************

I will, of course, comment on SFGP and Josseppe when they fix their links. I've gotta say, the competition this season is way stiffer than it was last time around. I wouldn't have lasted nearly as long if I were competing this time. It's gonna be fun to listen, there's some real talent and some real entertainment here.

Am I the only person that thinks a fine frenzy didn't actually sing, and just let a Youtube cover of Stay Beautiful play the entire time? It's not that hard to tell...

If that's true, it'll be very obvious when we see her submission for the second round. :shrug

It could still be her if she recorded it, and then just played it back and submitted the played back version. But there doesn't sound like there's any live singing going on there to me. idk.
