So I have a question for y'all. My dad drinks like all the time, so it turned me off from drinking. But lately I've opened off, and I've now had Wine once, and two different kinds of Rum. My question is:

Why do people drink this stuff? It tastes so fucking awful. The Rum I had from my friend tonight smelled like straight up Finger Nail Polish Remover.

Different strokes, different folks. Just because someone drinks doesn't mean they drink anything that has a proof to it. It's all a matter of individual taste and preference, like anything else you'd eat or drink. For me, I love wine, especially pinot noir, but besides that, I can tolerate a shiraz and... that's about it. I hate merlot and can barely stand any and all white wines. Beer's fine, depending on which one (Shiner Bock is amazing, as an example). Hard liquor I tend to hate aside from vodka, one very specific brand of dark rum and Jager.

Ask someone else and they'll have a completely different answer.

Some people just can't stand the sensation of any alcohol whatsoever, and that's fine too. Sometimes, you develop the "taste" for it, so to speak. I hated beer for years until I tasted my first Sam Adams Summer Ale, and from there I was sold.

...I guess the best answer is to just say :shrug.

Idk. The same reason people like coffee or cigars. Obviously there's the effects they bring but people also develop a strong preference for the tastes of these things. I drink coffee for the taste more than anything really (though it does have the wonderful side effect of getting rid of headaches). Likewise I do drink cause I like being drunk, but I LOVE the taste of beer and rum.

So I'm gathering that I should just try more kinds, and see what I like?

Also Ztar maybe the reason Coffee gets rid of your headaches is because you have like a need for Caffeine now? My Mom gets a headache if she doesn't drink Coffee early in the morning and my dad is the same with Diet Coke, because they drank it so much it become like a part of them? IDK if that makes sense.

Headaches are a result of caffeine addiction yeah but before I drank coffee the only thing that would help my headaches was excedrin (one of the active ingredients is caffeine) and that was before I was addicted to coffee. Also caffeine is a vasodilator which helps with most types of headaches.

At this point it might be because I'm addicted though

I also have a really hard time with Alcohol's taste, and can't stand high-proof drinks. Amaretto's a great sweet one to start with though. Alcohol's all about the effect it has on you, though, not the taste. It loosens me up a lot and makes conversation easier.

In short, yes. There's almost always some kind of alcohol that ends up tasting great to you and doing what you want it to do. There's one guy I know who refused to drink anything and everything for the longest time because he thought everything was just nasty, until someone had him try an amaretto sour. To this day, it is the only thing he orders, because he legitimately loves the taste. (They ARE delicious, but they're more... um... on the girly side. So if you have any self respect, don't order any at a bar.)

And more to that, your tastes will change over time, like with anything else. Several years ago, my drink of choice was rum and coke. Then on my birthday, co-workers bought me a total of 12 of them over the course of 2 hours. That = bad idea. It took me until just last year to be able to smell rum at all without feeling queasy. After that, I had a brief phase where I didn't mind Jack Daniels, until there was a Jack chugging contest at 3am one night during a blowout. To this day, I cannot be near Jack without feeling a sensation of bile. I hated beer until I tried one I liked, and then expanded my taste from there. So on and so on...

Also, fun fact -- my favorite mixed drink to order is always a zombie. It's the most bang for your buck in a bar or restaurant, given what's mixed into it (read: a shit-ton). But if they make the zombie right, you can barely taste the sting of the high alcoholic content due to the combination of flavors and juices. It's win-win for regular consumers and newbies. :D

So both of you say Amaretto's so I'll try it. I have no self respect so I'll drink it anyway.

Also Rum and Coke was awful when I had it. Though the kid gave me like this huge glass of Rum and Room Temperature Cherry Coke. :ew

Tonight I had Rum and MT.Dew which was still gross. :lbf Well that's a lie, the Mt.Dew was just the chaser? OR whatever they call it.

And Kirblar I noticed tonight that I got really really hyper and talked like nonstop. :lbf So I guess it does the same too me. But now my head hurts and my eyes hurt.

I actually prefer higher proof stuff, because for me the taste of alcohol is universally awful and drinking something over a period of time just seems like torture. So if I really want to get drunk, I go for a few shots and have something on hand to wash away the terrible, terrible taste.

But for the most part I just plain dont drink because even smelling it churns my fragile little stomach

Granted I havent tried much alcohol overall. I had an appletini once that wasnt terrible. That was after my friend who actually ordered it poured packets of sugar and spoonfuls of the icecream from desert in it. I drank it only because she was going to dump it and I was paying for the damn meal and didnt want 8 dollars to go to waste.

Pay no attention to the bullshitter (read: Aras).

Yeah, give amaretto a shot. It's still tasty when you have it straight, but using a mixer is never a bad idea. Amaretto sour (with any store-bought sour mix) is delicious and perfect if you're just looking to maintain a very pleasant buzz with very, very little risk of feeling drunk.

One thing that you should consider trying at some point is a Jagerbomb or a Jagerdew. Jager on its own is a very unique flavor, not overpowering but still a little strong (hides its proof quite nicely), with a spicier herb and licorice sort of sensation. Kinda comforting and earthy, in a way. Mixing it with red bull is a very common way of having some jager, as the flavors mix pretty well and it doesn't leave you getting droopy-eyed from the alcohol. Personally, mixing Jager with Mountain Dew (hence, Jagerdew) is just as effective, but even tastier. As long as the Jager was in the freezer for a while to be ice cold and the Mountain Dew is fresh from the fridge. :kudo

That description horrifies me. And an appletini on its own is one of the most sissified drinks one can have.

I love Amaretto Sours, but I also love the electric lemonade at Buffalo Wild Wings.
