FML, that's why I've always avoided doing it. My dad is an alcoholic so I've been afraid of turning into him and my career path doesn't have a lot of money in it unless I make it big, so I don't want any addictions that I can't afford. :lol: I probably won't drink again though. Like I didn't drink that much, but it really wasn't an enjoyable experience this morning. |

The exact statement I bet every alcoholic has said many a time. No one takes their first drink hoping to end up living in the gutter, so to speak. If you don't like it, don't do it. No matter the pressure. Especially if alcoholism runs in your family. |

Um, what I meant was that, people use "lets have a drink" as an excuse to be with friends. There is nothing wrong with going out for a few drinks if you take the right precautions. The lack of self-control is an entirely different topic. The same can be said for someone who is addicted to anything. I've already told KMK drinking isn't prerequisite to having a good time; it's the person. |

Oh you are totally right. But he mentioned alcoholism in his family. For alcoholics, or those pre-disposed to it, it isn't a matter of "lack of self-control." There is a genetic make-up to alcoholism. It really is a disease. That's where people get into problems. Some people will never be able to control it once they get started and that's why I really preach not doing it to those who have a family history of it. For those, thinking it is a just a social thing ... that could really be the start of years of problems. I just hate to see anybody take the chance on that. |

Which I understand. It's better to be safe than sorry. My family has had a bad history with alcoholism, yet the majority of my generation turned out okay. I don't believe there is a alcoholic "gene" and it's more about the environment. Someone like KMK, who acknowledges the danger and is aware of his families history, should be less likely to follow the same pattern. KMK, the alcohol topic seems to one you are in conflict with a lot. Alcohol isn't some magic fun juice. If you drink it, you won't automatically turn into this ball of energy and have a great time. It always comes down to the person. The people who do change, do so more because it breaks down the barriers. I think you just need to be yourself, and just have fun without worrying about what everyone else is doing. The people who turn to alcohol FOR something, are the ones who become dependent on it. |

Well, like most all posts that I skimmed in this thread, it comes down to the person and what they like. If alcohol is something you don't want to get into because of its effects, then there's nothing wrong with abstaining from it. For me, I started drinking in high school for the purpose of getting drunk. I didn't care so much about drinking something with a taste I enjoyed; I just wanted to get drunk and have a good time. Since then, I've drank enough to find what I actually like to drink and what I don't. I'm a huge beer guy and absolutely love discovering new beers and whatnot. The benefit for me in beer is that not only do I enjoy the taste (of the ones I do buy), but if I drink enough it does relax me and just generally puts me in a "looser" mood. It's fun for me socially as I tend to open up a lot more with people while I'm a little buzzed, or it's great for me to just relax me if I'm working on something. And again, a good beer or two for me just for the taste is something I enjoy. There are times where if I'm out socially and I want to get a little more drunk and just have a good time, I'll drink a harder drink. It saves me the hassle of consuming so many beers to try and reach same level of how buzzed I want to be and having to pee every 3 minutes. There are hard drinks out there whose taste I do enjoy, and I do get a kick out of the extra "kick" that comes with the higher proof  I hate wine. It always just puts me to sleep and I generally don't like the taste, unless it's a sangria. So generally I like to drink when I enjoy the taste AND enjoy the effects on my state of mind, but it also depends on what kind of drunk you are. If I were generally an angry or emotional drunk, I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. Usually I'm just happy or feeling really relaxed, but I've gotten into a few stupid arguments because I was drunk too. Basically, like someone else said, it strips you down and you're just a lot more sensitive to a lot of things. It can have both positive and negative effects. |

I've never been hungover. Probably because I drink water all night while drinking, because that's the biggest thing with hangovers is the dehydration.

Oh ya. If I remember to, I drink a whole glass of water before I go to sleep after a night of drinking. Otherwise, I will wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning dying of thirst. |
