If you are looking for a cheap T-Mobile phone, check Target. I was at the one in Keene, NH and they had 5 Nokia 2610 pre pay kits for $15. Of course they were clearence items as the new 1208 and the 2760 were already out for sale.

First off, Hello all!

now for my question, I've been researching all the prepaid companies I can, and I came across a company called Locus, http://www.locustelecom.com/wireless/o2_main2.shtml , who offer O2 service, I was wondering if any of you have heard of them before and what you thought of them.

Thanks all

Hello there Mongoose64!

Yes I've heard of them. They use AT&T's network for "O2 Wireless" (I believe they license the name from the overseas carrier, but may be wrong).

Looks like their rate plans aren't all that great; Net10 or Tracfone could probably get you something similar or better, with cheaper phones and a larger network (AT&T plus roaming partners, contract style). Then again, the monthly plans aren't bad IF you use all those minutes. They don't have rolover.

If you're wondering where I'm coming from on the plan info, it's here: http://www.babblebug.com/product_wireless.cfm?type_id=50

FULL DISCLOSURE: the link above was to BabbleBug. BabbleBug pays for the ad on my blog. However the link above isn't tracked in any way, though the ad on the blog is. On the other hand, they're a cool company and I linked to them just now because they had the info on the airtime and nodoby else id on a quick search.

I'm so glad I found this rather cool forum!

I'm Currently getting ready to go to college, and I use Verizon Inpulse right now (their older plan not those newer ones, I guess My plan never got switched) with a Motorola Razr V3m

I've used Tracfone before ( My whole family Uses it Besides me), and they are more than happy with it. But I need more minutes.

Anyways, I found out Verizon gets beyond poor reception on campus (and also its rather expensive!), so I need to switch carriers.

After Looking at all the prepaid plans I could find I settled on Net10 ( because its very similar to Tracfone and gives me a boatload of minutes)
But then I happened to Stumble across Oxygen. My biggest gripe with Net10 would be their lack of phones, or rather (in my opinion) lack of quality in them. I've never felt really happy with the Tracfone phones they seem to feel cheap to me (Net10 and tracfone tend to have similar phones I've noticed). Although I loved The Nokia 2600 I had, when I did have Tracfone, It was real solid. and with Oxygen (to my understanding) I can use any GSM phone I happen to have lying around.
Which I find to be a rather cool concept, Because When I travel to out of the country I have a prepaid GSM phone I use. Like in Mexico basically you get any GSM phone you want, put the sim in it, and your golden. I just like that novelty I guess. but I don't know if thats keeping me from seeing the light for the right plan for me.

If I went with Oxygen I would most likely go with the plan that would cover my need best, Either pay $20 every 60 days or $30 every month, I'm not quite sure how much I will be using my mobile once I'm in College though.

But If I did go with Net10 I like their Nokia 1600 because it reminds me of the 2600 I had.

I know that was a whole lot of rambling, but do you think you can offer some expert insight here. I would greatly appreciate it.

By the way thanks for the Link to Babblebug!

Mongoose64, I'm in college (about to enter my sophomore year) and I have a few pointers for you:

1. Use VoIP when you can. It's cheap (check out DSLReports.com for reviews of various companies) and if you're on campus they probably have a high speed WiFi network where you can login and do your talking. If you want to go cheap, Skype and Yahoo Messenger are cheeeeap.

2. On Oxygen you can use any unlocked or AT&T-comparible (including Cingular but not including old AT&T Wireless) phone but if you're ordering a high-end international phone make sure it has the 850 band, otherwise you'll get lousy coverage.

3. Net10 is a pretty good choice for service. They have MUCH more coverage than INPulse and even GoPhone\Oxygen, as their coverage mirror's AT&T's contract network. But you knew that already...

4. Net10\Tracfone (same company) is coming out with some hihger-end phones now. The LG 600, which will be $80, comes with Bluetooth, a cmaera and an external display. So the phones aren't so painfully low-end anymore. Also, Oxygen only allows talk and texting, whereas Net10 allows picture messaging and...limited...web browsing.

5. Net10's minutes roll over. Oxygen's per-month plans don't.

I'd grab a Tracfone from a store near your school to check out coverage then, if coverage is satisfactory, grab a phone from Net10 and go with it. If not, maybe Virgin Mobile would work better, or T-Mobile To Go (I doubt the last one though).

While in a nearby Best Buy, I happened to notice that they have lowered the price of thr Boost i425 (both colors) to $30, and the i855e to $50. They also have the i335 in stock now.

Most of the Kajeet phones have been reduced as well. The Katana 2 is $65. Although the web site does not show the reduced prices. I also saw where Kajeet is now offering the LG Rumor for $170 on Kajeet's site. Wish VM could have landed that instead of the Wild Card.

Kajeet is now offering $30 in airtime when you buy a handset from their site. They would not be bad except for the 32 cents per day charge.

Holy crap the Rumor is expensive (it's $280 unsubsidized from Sprint, but other Kajeet phones are more subsidized by a long shot!) but it is the nicest phone available on Kajeet and maybe parents will pay the primo price so their kids don't have to get a full-blown plan just to text...

Several things have come up in the past day...

T-Mobile's web site is giving away the Nokia 2610 (free after $30 rebate) and they have lowered the price of the Nokia 1208 to $20. Note the Nokia 1208 does not have T-Zones access (no GPRS data).

Best Buy has the Nokia 1208 for $19 and the Samsung T429 for $80 (both T-Mobile phones).

Best Buy also is selling the AT&T Samsung A127 for $40 ($20 off) and the Samsung A117 for $20 (half off the $40 regular price).

Best Buy continues the A127 sale this week for $40, but lowers the sale price of the A117 to $10 (Still $20 off their 'regular' price of $29.99, which was $39.99 last week). Reading other message boards, it appears that the A117 can be unlocked easilly, so not a bad price if you can unlock it as easilly as has been posted.

The T-Mobile Samsung T429 has been lowered another $10 and is on sale for $70 at Best Buy

For anybody who is looking for a cheap dual band flip phone, you can buy the Samsung A117 at Best Buy for $10 this week (or take the ad to K-Mart or Wal Mart and have them price match), and then you can follow this link to have it unlocked yourself. I have done it with two so far and have not had a problem...

T-Mobile has brought back their "Free $25 refill card" with a phone purchase.

While the Nokia 2610 is out of stock (free after rebate), the Nokia 1208 is in stock. Even though the 1208 has no T-Zone access, the phone is selling for $20, meaning you actually 'make' $5 buying the deal as shipping is free.

T-Mobile again brings back their free $25 card with the purchase of ANY phone now (this includes the Nokia 1208 for $20)

One thing of note, they now have a 'web exclusive' Motor Razr for $60, this also includes the free $25 airtime card.
