Max waved to some friendly Hufflepuff students a few feet from the back entrance to the ground. He knew that they would be in eyesight and hearing range in case of trouble. Max was there on his private project. After a minute he stopped and reached into his bag of breadcrumbs and he scattered the crumbs around the southwestern area of the neatly manicured lawn. Max was quietly watching for birds to arrive on the grounds. Max earlier sneaked some bread from lunchtime in the Great Hall. He felt that it would attract the birds to the lawn. Besides Hagrid was talking on the topic of birds in his Care for Magical Creatures and Animals class. Max wondered why he was being much more safe in his teaching now but Max did not care. After all, Max was just in his 3rd year right now. After a few minutes of waiting and scanning through the many categories of birds (both magical and non-magical) in his textbook, Max finally heard some noises of a certain breed of birds. A couple of red birds just flew down to eat the crumbs. Max immediately recognized them as robins from the Muggle World. He smiled as he watched them eat. A few minutes later a couple of sparrows flew down to eat the crumbs. Surprisingly the robins and the sparrows did not fight over the bread. Max knew that he had a few more crumbs for more birds (2 slices of bread worth). But there were plenty of crumbs still on the ground. The birds were taking their time to eat some worms and bugs too. Max kneeled quietly on his knees to watch them, taking mental notes on what they did. Still Max hoped to see anything magical to arrive. Max was not aware that someone was quietly approaching him from behind until Max noticed the shadow of the person. Max simply said Shhh, it is okay to talk but try to keep the voice down, whomever you are |

Kate was unusually full in the stomach as she helped herself with a lot more that she generally could digest. She wondered what had gotten over her. She generally had limited quantity of treacle tart. It was high time to take a walk, she decided. She made her way to the lawns so she could enjoy the windy day. Also cos' it was a long way and hopefully her giddiness would vanish in time. She sighted Max in a corner and slowly walked behind him with a clear intention of surprising him. But he noticed. So much for the stealth! She sighed and said " Yes Max, thank you. You just destroyed my plans of freaking you out" |

Max slowly turned his head back at Katie with a puzzled look on his face momentarily. But quickly the expression changed to a friendly smile. He replied Hello, I may have jumped out of my skin if I did not see your shadow earlier. He pointed back at the birds. ...and they may have all flown away too. What brings you out here on this day, Katie? Max was grateful for the company that just came. He thought that Katie could help look too, even for just for a short time. He started to ask about Rafi or Geoff but decided not to. Max felt that maybe they were busy studying or still eating. |

Kate smiled and said " I just had an overdose of treacle tart today Max. Im just tad worried I might bloat up, you know. Besides I'm not as skinny as I used to be. These exams barely give me any time to play quidditch or anything" She looked around at the quite deserted lawn and said " Come here often? It must be a stress buster. Its so serene here. " OOC : My apologies.... short one but il make it longer next time onwards |

ooc: That is Okay. It does not have to be long. Sometimes shorter is much better. Max smiled and replied ‘Well, I-I do not come here that often. I just thought that I needed to do some extra studying if I plan to excel in the Care of Magical Creatures and Animals . Some birds do appear to be serene and peaceful here. And these are the safest ones and they love eating breadcrumbs. Maybe I will see a Phoenix this year too. Professor Hagrid will hopefully teach on Phoenixes soon. Even if he does not do it this year, I can study on them ahead of time.” |

Katie rolled her eyes. Of course Max was the studious all too inquisitive junior always wanting to learn. He reminded her a lot of what she used to be when she was in her first year. This was probably why she liked him so much. It was as if she were looking at her past. The nice bits of it, however few they were. She smiled at Max and said " They don't teach you about phoenixes this early Max. That's NEWT standard. I'll tell you what. You can come to my dorm and pick up the book I have on phoenixes. Also if you're interested, I can get you some books from the library. For as far as I know, books like them are only allowed for 5th year and up. So whenever you're free, just let me know. I'll take you there. You can grab all the books you want and we'll take them on my card." She smiled at Max and said after some thought " They say Dumbledore has a phoenix. If you want, we can plan out a scheme to visit the lovely bird. I haven't seen her myself. Want me to speak to the guys about it? " |

When Max heard that Hagrid did not teach about phoenixes that early, he was somewhat disappointed. Max was hoping that Hagrid would teach on it for a couple of days. Then Max thought ‘Maybe Hagrid will mention a couple of sentences on phoenixes this year anyway. After all, Hagrid can get excited about his topics and could mention it anyway. ’ Yet Max was hoping that Hagrid would not spend so much time on the mainly harmless animals. Max was enjoying Hagrid’s class this year and he seemed to like Max too. Max even seemed to be learning much more quickly than the average student so far in that class. Max felt safe during that time. The huge appearance of Hagrid could intimidate any Slytherins from trying anything really stupid in class too. When Max heard Katie mentioning that she had a book on phoenixes AND her offer to check out the books that are reserved for 5th year and up, Max smiled a big smile and started to say YES. Then she offered to take Max to visit Dumbledore’s phoenix. At that time, Max replied excitedly “Yes, that will be great. I-I can’t take too many books to read right now. I do have other classes to study to. But I can take a few books to read to learn more about them. That includes your phoenix book. I am sure that Hagrid would be thrilled that I want to learn more. Maybe we too can m-manage a visit to see Dumbledore’s phoenix too someday. M-Maybe we could simply ask Dumbledore. He seems like a kind person and would let us see it.” |
