Hello to Hay!Land! I know there are quite a few new people that I don't even know, but I hope to get to know you soon. I just wanted to write a bit about why I haven't been around very much this year. It has been a CRAZY year and SO many things have happened in my family that it is unreal. To start off the year, my husband and I moved to Los Angeles in January. I was pursuing "the dream" of acting. I auditioned for a lot of things, I was in a play, and I worked on the show, "Boston Legal." It was fun. In March, my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Luckily, it was in an early stage, but it was also a fairly aggressive form. On a scale of 1-10, his level of aggressiveness was a 7. So, he started with hormone shots and was scheduled to begin radiation in May. We came home to visit in April and I had to put my 13 1/2 year old Schnauzer, Mollie to sleep. She was completely blind and partially deaf and couldn't hold her bowels. It was so sad. We were home for a week and I got sick with bronchitis and couldn't even be around my grandmother, who I had really wanted to spend time with. We returned to L.A. and my grandmother went into the hospital for an endoscopy. Simple procedure, right? Wrong. They didn't put her under anesthesia, but only under sedatives and she choked and aspirated into her lungs, so she was admitted to the hospital. That was on a Monday and by Friday, she was close to death because the dumb, incompetent people on the 4th floor didn't take her vitals enough to realize that her pulse ox was down to *60* 60!!! That is near coma level! My mom realized she wasn't responsive and they got her to the ICU. My parents called me and said she didn't have long, so I caught a flight the next morning. Turns out she had pneumonia from aspirating into her lungs. She started to improve and I spent the next 7 days at home. A couple days after being admitted to the ICU, they moved her to a rehab facility to help get her stronger (which was part of the plan in the first place). I spent Mother's Day at home and then left to get back to L.A. The following weekend, my grandmother was taken by ambulance to the ER. I didn't find out until Monday. By then, my husband and I had already decided to move back home to help my mom out with taking care of my grandmother and with my dad's radiation. By this time, it was the middle of May. My dad told me that Grammy didn't have much time, a month at the most. So, my husband and I booked a U-haul on Monday, picked it up on Tuesday, left on Wednesday, and got home Thursday night. My grandmother passed away early Friday morning. On the day of her funeral, my dad began radiation. So, we dealt with everything as best we could and things were doing okay. I started riding my tried and true horse, Volcano, again. We had a horse show, just jumping small 3'0" stuff and we won 3 classes and placed in every class, he was a star. 9 days after the show ended, Volcano colicked...BAD. It was a miracle he survived the first day. But he developed an infection in his colon and I had to make the decision to put him down 2 days later. He didn't make it easy though. He still had a sparkle in his eyes even though he was in pain. So, the vet thought of one final thing: put him on a round of antibiotics and give him 24 hours. If it was a particular infection, the antibiotics would knock it out. So, we walked him around in this small field and she shot the antibiotic paste up his mouth. About 20 minutes later, he went stiff and toppled to the ground and rolled completely over. He started kicking and kicking and his eyes rolled in the back of his head and he made this awful sound. I ran to get the vet, who was stringing up his IV fluids and the instant she saw him, she said "we have to let him go." He was about 2/3 of the way gone by the time she injected him. I never thought in a million years that Volcano would die like this. I thought he would be so old, that he would have just died of old age. He was so strong and so healthy, never took a lame step, even at the age of 20. We were about to leave for another show in 5 days when he died. So, my summer has been spent grieving over him and my grandmother and my dog. I did the math and in the span of exactly 80 days, I lost my dog, my grandmother, and my horse. It's still a bit unreal to me. I started to get back into HL and I even held a "Welcome Back" show, but I wasn't able to finish it completely because of everything going on. Then, in August, my husband's dog had to be put to sleep and then on October 16th, I had to put my 14 year old cat, Shadow to sleep. And to top it all off, I was in the hospital last week. I'm okay, but they still don't know what exactly is wrong. Most likely, peptic ulcer disease, but I have to get in with a gastroenterologist, which is a chore in and of itself. Okay, now that I've written a novel, I will say that I am SUPER EXCITED to have the next "welcome back" show, the OMF SPOOKY SPECTACULAR. Thanks so much to Amy for hosting it and for keeping all my horses while I have been away. We have quite a few entries and it looks like it's going to be tons of fun!!! Thanks for reading and I will see you all around! ~Meegan |

I had no idea that all of that was going on with you this year! So does this mean that you'll be back to HL soon? Not that I'm wanting your horses to go or anything. I hope you're on the mend! Being in the hospital is NO FUN! I'm still awaiting news from the doctor on my dad's condition and whether or not I have to fly down to Louisiana or not. We shall see.. I'm excited about your show this weekend. We're going to be busier than a bee on a flower for the next three weeks with the shows being hosted. Let me know if you want me to enter your horses in the upcoming MH shows!
