Wind me up, spin me 'round,
Oh, lookie what I found
Boots and boys
They bring me so much joy
I gotta say it, wear 'em both so pretty as I walk in the city
Watch out boots and boys

Kyra Blackmore

It was that particularly chaotic time of day, when the corridors were filled with a bustling of students who had either just finished up a class, were enjoying their break, or heading to the Great Hall for an early dinner. Amidst the bustle of figures was a brown-haired girl, upon first glance completely inconspicuous from the rest of the crowd. But unlike the majority of students, she didn’t call out to her friends or laugh or rant angrily about how unfair that last test was. She was silent, with a solemn but not depressed expression, moving alone in a self-assured, steady but quiet manner that somehow seemed at odds with the pulsing activity around her.

If anyone had recognized Kyra Blackmore from the very beginning of the year (which, as she had always kept such a low profile, few did), they would have noticed a definite change in her. She still had a sense of intensity, and her penetrating, almost judgmental gaze still gave the impression that her mind was churning a great number of thoughts within it, all very complex. She still radiated a certain sense of depth, intelligence, and perceptiveness, and as before, gave the impression to anyone who cared enough to notice that she kept a subtle wall between her and the average student, built of some deeply scarring past events and charred emotions.

Yet the great difference lay in the lightness and evenness of her pace, her straightened posture, the way her mouth no longer turned down at the corners from a subconscious burden. She no longer shrunk into herself but instead held her body with a sense of poise and quiet confidence that she had always lacked. She no longer bore such a blazing fire of self-hate and misery within herself, although the ashes of the conflagration still remained. She regarded the students whizzing past her with less disdain. Even her skin seemed clearer and healthier, her brown hair now tinged with a touch of red seemed bouncy and softer, her body leaner. She thought, in a way that she had never regarded her own appearance before, that she could almost be pretty. The sullen, self-disgusted, tortured girl had disappeared, and in its place stood someone older and mature, someone who had not shaken off the past entirely, but was on the path to recovery from it one small step at a time.

A pack of rowdy third years suddenly caught up to Kyra, one of them slamming into her and another stepping on her feet. After letting out a few choice swearwords at the boys, Kyra decided to detour down a less crowded hallway. Here, there were only a few lone wanderers, and out of habit she preferred being away from commotion. The relative peace gave her some time to her thoughts.

Coming back to Hogwarts for the second half of the school year hadn’t been as hard as she thought it would be. Even at N.E.W.T. year, it wasn’t difficult catching up with the curriculum again, since her old educations had placed her ahead of Hogwarts’ system by far. She had seriously considered even bothering coming back, but figured that having an official graduation from a school might be useful, in case it helped whatever she decided to do after school. Besides, it wasn’t a strain, and it provided a safe haven for a few months while she decided how to pick up the pieces of her life and construct some kind of future for herself. That was the difficult part, not catching back up to her class. Kyra was still grappling with waves of emotions, confusion and sadness and fear. There were times when she was utterly confident in her need to rebuild her life and she was sure she had the strength to do so, but at other times she would succumb to anxiety and a rush of confusing and conflicting emotions as her mind tried to wrap itself over what had happened. The reality of it was that the past was too difficult to shake off.

Sam was the first to get up and leave the Transfiguration classroom, barely even looking at other people in her class, and strode through the corridors with the same air of confidence (to the point of arrogance) as usual. In that regard, while time may have past, Samantha Amel Moody was the same as ever; worthy of her nickname of Ice Princess.

Brushing past the many students that were making their way to different classes, Sam recalled her previous one. It still felt weird, having Lem as her teacher and having to call her 'Professor Tarendeau'. And, knowing that she didn't particularly like her, Sam didn't feel like hanging around and getting interrogated on whether she was still learning about the Dark Arts or not. The answer was, surprisingly, no. Not wanting to risk geting caught with it anymore, Samantha had put the Book of Wyrm back where it belonged at the start of the year and hadn't even taken a look at it's contents since.

Of course, there had been no need for it, either: since last summer, deaths and disappearances related to the Death Eaters had decreased tremendously. Voldemort hadn't shown himself since and the Order didn't have that much to do, including Sam. As if the war had suddenly ended. That was, at least, what the Ministry was trying to say, but everyone with half a brain knew better; this only meant that the Death Eaters were up to something.

On the bright side, it left Samantha plenty of time to focus on her education. N.E.W.T.'s were coming up and even Sam had been studying hard over the past few months. She had been uncertain for a very long time on what she wanted to do after Hogwarts, but had, finally, chosen for a career as an Auror after all. Which meant that she had to get at least 5 N.E.W.T.'s, with nothing below 'Exceeds Expectations'. Duelling, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms and Transfiguration were easy for her, but Potions could be tricky. She'd also chosen several other subjects to keep her options open, which only added to her workload. Then there were her duties as Head Girl.

All in all, I guess you could say that Sam had been pretty busy.

Leaving the last group of younger students behind, she took a shortcut. Having a rare, free hour, she had decided to go to the Duelling Club again for a change, a few floors below. However, just as she put her hand on the banister, on the verge of making her way down the stairs, she caught sight of a familiar face, albeit one that she hadn't seen in ages. Kyra Blackmore. Sam's face lit up with a smile and she made her way towards the brown-haired girl. She'd met Kyra last year and had developed an interest in her, though she was hard to get to know. There was something about the Slytherin that made Samantha want to talk with her some more, but she hadn't seen her in a few months now.

"Hey," Sam greeted Kyra cheerfully as she approached her. "It's been quite a while."

Kyra Blackmore

“Hey.”
Kyra was dragged from her thoughts by a voice that made every sense in her body strangely, almost thrillingly alert with one word. It was an incredibly familiar voice, belonging to a person Kyra had not seen in quite a long time. She turned quickly, and for reasons she could not explain, a broad smile spread across her face. Samantha Moody. Kyra couldn’t remember the last time she had laid eyes on the girl, probably at the beginning of the school year before she left. She was one of the few people at Hogwarts that Kyra had spared a thought to in her travels. She had allowed herself to wonder where Sam was and how she was doing, despite the fact that her relationship with the girl was not particularly deep. Sometimes, Sam’s face would swim to the surface of Kyra’s thoughts, before she shoved it away and turned her attention to more pressing matters. Now, Kyra could see that her memory hadn’t done the girl justice at all. Her smile was much more captivating, her eyes much brighter, her face much prettier, than the features Kyra had remembered. She crossed the remaining distance between them in a few long strides. “Sam!” she exclaimed, with such a note of warmth in her voice mingled with the surprise that she was amazed herself at how randomly happy Sam’s appearance had made her. Kyra usually didn’t have such a cheerful, friendly tone towards anyone, especially a mere acquaintance (or were they friends? Kyra wasn’t sure) that she hadn’t seen in months and months. But then again, there was something strange about Sam that seemed to bring out qualities in Kyra that she didn’t even know she had.

“It’s been quite a while.”
Kyra nodded in agreement. “It has. I’ve been away from Hogwarts for some time now…family matters,” she added vaguely in order to answer any questions that may have been forming. She smiled inwardly. ‘Family matters’ had to be the vaguest, most nondescript and superficial way of possibly describing the mess that her absence from Hogwarts had been, but since her family was involved, it wasn’t a lie. Kyra was determined that that was the only explanation anyone would be getting. “How have you been?” she inquired politely, making a point of turning the conversation away from her disappearance. Hopefully Sam would take the vagueness and the change of topic as the hints they were intended to be, and not press the matter.

“Sam!”

Samantha was taken completely by surprise at Kyra's response, but in a good way. It wasn't like they'd been on bad terms before, it was simply that her reaction was much more lively now. In fact, as Sam's emerald eyes took in her appearance, she noticed that Kyra had definitely changed. It were small things, things that Sam couldn't really place, but it was there. Kyra had always been pretty good-looking, but now it seemed to be clearer somehow. And from the way she spoke to the way she carried herself, it just seemed she was happier than before. This only made the unexpected reunion unexpectedly pleasant.

Not to mention it made Sam feel more... Well, desirable? Was that the word? She'd never really thought about it, but how long had it been since anyone had seemed to be so happy about seeing her?

“It has. I’ve been away from Hogwarts for some time now…family matters. How have you been?”

Family matters? Must've been some issue for Kyra to disappear for that long. She didn't know anything about her family, but then again, she didn't know all that much about Kyra yet. But while Sam couldn't prevent a curious expression from crossing her face, she decided not to ask when she steered the topic of conversation towards her.

"I've been, well... A little bored and a little busy at the same time. If that makes any sense," Samantha said with a laugh. "I've been studying a lot, but aside from that, things haven't been very interesting around here. Besides that, I'm good."

"And you? Glad to be back at Hogwarts?"

The look of curiosity that passed over Sam's face didn't escape Kyra's notice, but she was grateful that Sam didn't press it. Kyra listened to her response with a mixture of interest and good-natured amusement. Bored but busy. Kyra could certainly understand that, even if the two hadn't been keeping such close company for her lately. Busy she certainly had been, but far from bored. Sam's life of late sounded so wonderfully uncomplicated. Schoolwork was dull and a nuisance sometimes, no doubt, but after everything that had happened in the last six months to Kyra, she would have gladly swapped it for the quiet respite of Hogwarts.

"And you? Glad to be back at Hogwarts?"
Kyra gave a small nod. "Yeah, I am. But although its nice to be back, its a little strange at the same time. I can't help thinking that in a few months time we'll be out of here, so besides N.E.W.Ts, Hogwarts isn't so important anymore. I can't help my focus from shifting beyond it, if that makes sense," she added with a tiny self-deprecating smile. "Speaking of which, do you have any idea as to what you might do after school?" Kyra was astounded at how easy it was for her to talk to Sam; something about the girl just beckoned the words right out of her mouth.

"Yeah, I am. But although its nice to be back, its a little strange at the same time. I can't help thinking that in a few months time we'll be out of here, so besides N.E.W.Ts, Hogwarts isn't so important anymore. I can't help my focus from shifting beyond it, if that makes sense.

"Yeah, I guess it must feel weird to come back to school when we're so close to leaving the place," Samantha said, still kind of wondering why exactly Kyra had gone in the first place. "But thinking of what will come after is probably a good thing. The sooner you have an idea of what it is you want to do after Hogwarts, the better." To be quite honest, the thought still made Sam a little nervous. It was only now that she realised how attached she'd gotten to the old castle and even if not all times had been good, leaving Hogwarts School after seven years would still feel weird.

Not to mention the fact that Samantha had long been uncertain of what career she wanted to pursue. Still uncertain, as a matter of fact.

"Speaking of which, do you have any idea as to what you might do after school?"

Ah, there came the question... "Well, I wasn't sure of what to do for a very long time. I still don't know, but I've settled on trying to become an Auror. I'm skilled at all the subjects they require N.E.W.T.'s for, so I should be alright. But I don't know... Maybe I'm just uncertain at working for the Ministry," Sam explained.

When she'd just started at Hogwarts, it seemed like a natural decision. Of course she was going to be an Auror and follow in her father's footsteps, despite his short-lived career as one. But now that Samantha was older, she'd been caught up in some of the action and had even joined the Order, her enthusiasm was not what it used to be. It was no longer a kid's fantasy, but a serious (not to mention dangerous) job. And having to listen to Scrimgeour was not a very entertaining idea at all, although Ralem had often done her own thing. Which had recently got her fired as Head of Aurors, of course.

But now, Sam returned her attention to Kyra. "So what about you?" She wondered if Kyra had a clearer idea for her future.

Kyra nodded. Sam had caught on to her thoughts exactly. But as much as Kyra enjoyed Hogwarts, even if she wasn't thinking beyond school, she wondered how much she would really miss it. Certainly she liked her time there, but it was incredibly short compared to most everyone else. Most students had spent seven years of their lives in the castle, grown up within its walls, made the awkward transformations from pre-teens to puberty to teenagers to, finally, adults in its safe, nurturing environment. She could easily see how many people would be horribly nostalgic for a place that was so much a part of their lives. Kyra, on the other hand, hadn’t even spent a year in total at the school. She had enrolled last winter, in her sixth year, finished out the term, and had made a brief appearance for the first few weeks of school before leaving again, only to return now. That made a little more than half a year in total, even if it had technically been her school for about a year. And while it was by far the best school Kyra had attended, and she much preferred it over Durmstrang or her mother’s particular brand of homeschooling, her self-imposed policy of isolation last year hadn’t won her any special friends. She hadn’t gone on any noteworthy adventures (or any adventures at all, really), or shared good times with other students, or gotten into the spirit of Quidditch, or any of the other textbook definitions of ‘good memories’ that went hand in hand with Hogwarts. So perhaps, for Kyra, leaving Hogwarts might not be so difficult at all. In a lot of ways, it was just another place she found herself living in, occupying space until it was time to move on. It wasn’t really home.

"Well, I wasn't sure of what to do for a very long time. I still don't know, but I've settled on trying to become an Auror. I'm skilled at all the subjects they require N.E.W.T.'s for, so I should be alright. But I don't know... Maybe I'm just uncertain at working for the Ministry."
Being an Auror would fit Sam, Kyra decided. She didn’t know much about the girl, but she did know that she was skilled at dueling and didn’t lack strength or spirit in fighting. It was also just one of those instinctual things, where you could look at a person and see what job they would fit well with. What Kyra found interesting was Sam’s last sentence, about being uncertain of working for the Ministry; she felt there was something substantive behind it and wondered what could cause Sam’s dislike for the Ministry, but now wasn’t the best time to ask about it.

"So what about you?"
Yep, there it was. Kyra had anticipated being asked the same thing ever since the original inquiry had flown out of her mouth. She wondered how best to begin answering it. "Well..." she hesitated. Even now that she was free to follow her own path, she still had difficulties coming to terms with the wonderfully wide open possibilities that lay ahead. The shadow of her mother and her past, and everything that had always defined who she was still hung heavily over her. It wasn't as if, with her mother’s physical removal from Kyra’s life, all of her presence had disappeared, leaving Kyra free to embrace whatever she desired without a second thought. Kyra often wondered how much of her past would come back to haunt her, whether she would still be sucked into and tangled up in the dark dealings of her mother’s world, the way she had always feared she would be after Hogwarts. She had always looked on it as a cold, tragic inevitability, probably resulting in her death. It was impossible to casually remove such a doom that had been hanging over her for practically her entire life. But if she was going to try to embrace her own path, the answer would be, “For a while I’ve kind of had this desire to be a wandmaker. I’m thinking of going to Ollivanders and seeing if he’ll take me up as an apprentice after school. The pay probably won’t be too great but he’s the best there is and I’ll be able to learn so much from him…and eventually I’d hope to set up my own shop.” She wondered how Sam would take this. Being a wanddmaker wasn’t exactly a typical student's career dream.

For a moment, it was as if a bit of the old Kyra had returned. Or maybe a better a better way to put it, was that it was still there. The way she briefly hesitated, as if she couldn't Sam tell for some reason... The same way she'd been before her return to school. Samantha had always wondered whether she was just naturally a rather closed person or if there was some specific reason she didn't want to be involved with people. Either that, or maybe she thought that Sam might find her choice of career silly, but she doubted that. If there was one thing that she did know about Kyra was that she was a skilled witch; not only judging by the way she'd duelled with her last summer, but even by the fact that she was back here. There weren't many that would quickly catch up with the school work in their seventh year after being gone for months and hope to get their N.E.W.T.'s.

"Well... For a while I’ve kind of had this desire to be a wandmaker. I’m thinking of going to Ollivanders and seeing if he’ll take me up as an apprentice after school. The pay probably won’t be too great but he’s the best there is and I’ll be able to learn so much from him…and eventually I’d hope to set up my own shop.”

When Kyra explained her plans, Sam was quite impressed. "Wandmaker, huh? Interesting... To be honest, I'm so used to having a wand, I almost forget we're dependant on them if we want to channel our powers. Without them, we're not really different from Muggles," she said and thought of the properties of her own wand; Maple, 10 1/4 inch with a Phoenix feather as it's core. Samantha was smart, but she had absolutely no idea how any of it worked. Why was it that, compared to the others she had tried all those years ago, this one wand was the best fit for her to bring out her true potential? The more she thought about it, the more she realised just how complex the subject really was.

"I'm sure that learning the craft will be a lot of hard work, but worth it."

"Wandmaker, huh? Interesting... To be honest, I'm so used to having a wand, I almost forget we're dependant on them if we want to channel our powers. Without them, we're not really different from Muggles."

"For the most part," Kyra agreed thoughtfully. "There's always wandless magic for those who are skilled enough to use it, but besides that exception magic can be done without wands. Of course, this mostly applies to children who are just discovering their magical abilities and haven't had a chance to get their hands on a wand yet, but I've read of a few strange cases where, in special circumstances, even overage wizards are not entirely relient on wands, although their results would certainly be much clearer, focused, and more powerful if they were using one..." She blinked, realizing how much she had digressed in her musings. Stupid, stupid, she chided herself. Sam probably couldn't care less about the peculiar exceptions to magic with wands that had existed in the past. For all Kyra knew, Sam already knew most of what she had said, and Kyra was appearing to be a huge know-it-all.

"Sorry," she said sheepishly. "As you can see I tend to get a bit carried away. The fascinating thing is, there's so much in this field that is still unexplained. As mysterious as studies of wands can be, it ties directly to the studies of magical powers--the origins of it, the true essence of it," she continued, her face animated and alive with her excitement. "So little is known, but its the basic core of the magical world, without which none of anything could exist for us wizards and witches. Power can be sought by fear and coercion, but this--this knowledge of the deepest workings of magic is real power." Shit. That had probably been a bit too far, the mention of power. There had been nothing dark about her tone, only pure intellectual and emotional reverence, but still Kyra was worried. Kyra hadn't even meant to extend her enthusiasm that far, but it had somehow slipped out. That was the problem with talking to Sam: it was far too easy. Kyra realized that her last sentence could make her appear to be someone power-hungry who sought control over others, a lover of people like Voldemort whoever the hell wanted to play dictator. The truth couldn't be more far from it, of course, but there was no way Sam would be able to know that. In fact the thought had come from a comparison against precisely that, a comparison between the power play mindgames and cruel vindictiveness that Kyra had grown up with and seen countless times in countless situations, and what she considered to be better than that. She felt that her concept of real power was an abstract that was deeper, smoother, less tangible yet one that controlled the fundamentals of life, like the law of gravity. It was beyond sinister, beyond fear, beyond all emotion except pure awe. A power such as that was infinitely beyond the Dark Arts, which seemed blood-stained, rusty and small in comparison.

Samantha listened, very interested, as Kyra spoke of wandless magic. Not only was the subject itself quite intriguing, but somehow, she also found it delightful to listen to her talk like this. She had already remarked that she'd changed, but Sam had never heard Kyra talk in such an animated matter about something. Sam leant against the nearest wall as she continued and couldn't help but smile. It was clear that wandmaking and the magic related to it was something that really excited Kyra. She could understand it, because Sam knew she herself also spoke that way about duelling, occasionally.

But as Samantha thought about wandless magic herself and Kyra mentioned there were older wizards that could perform it in a controlled fashion, one man's name and face couldn't help but appear before her mind's eye. Varius Kayes. That was the only person that Sam had known to have possessed that extraordinary ability, though she wouldn't be surprised if Voldemort himself could do it aswell. Varius... Somehow, the memory of the Obscurati's leader seemed worse than at those moments she encountered the real thing. Somehow, Samantha had acted quite defiant by instinct the few times she'd seen him for real, but now that she looked back on it, she realised how lucky she was to still be alive. But Varius was gone now - only to be replaced by something worse. "Yeah, I've heard of people that can do wandless magic," Sam mentioned, but she wondered whether Kyra had noticed that very brief flicker of fear that had appeared in her emerald eyes. Like remembering an old nightmare.

"Sorry. As you can see I tend to get a bit carried away.

"Really?" Sam joked, faking surprise before laughing merrily, all thoughts of Varius, Voldemort or anything else horrible pushed away again. But Kyra's words now took a more interesting turn. Samantha hadn't realised yet that wandmaking and magic itself were so intrinsically connected. Shifting her weight slightly as she stood, Sam wondered how much could be discovered if such mysteries about magic were to be unravelled. Kyra finally finished on what seemed like a darker note - but maybe that was just Sam.

"Power can be sought by fear and coercion, but this--this knowledge of the deepest workings of magic is real power."

Power. A subject that was closely tied to Samantha. For the past three years or so, she had sought for it aswell, even going so far as to read materials about Dark Magic that no one should really know about. Not only that, but she'd learned from both good wizards and bad and had been reminded several times at just how well she would fit into that more sinister part of wizarding society. Everything she did, Sam had done for what she'd believed to be a just cause; she wanted to grow stronger for the Order's sake and help end the chaos, even if it meant doing questionable things. Even now, Sam was torn between leading a normal life and her desire for something more. Something that Ralem was desperate to prevent.

But as she stood in that hallway with Kyra, everything she'd done seemed like the actions of another person. Sam didn't want to imagine what Kyra would think of her if she knew. "I suppose so," she finally said, hoping that she didn't think she was hiding something. Trying to brighten her own mood again, she added, "I can tell that you're really enthusiastic about it. I'm sure you'll make a great wandmaker."

“Yeah, I’ve heard of people that can do wandless magic.”
Kyra was an extremely observant person, and had learned to trust her instincts of perception and not dismiss them as her mind playing tricks on her, or as being paranoid. She didn’t miss the glimmer of fear that flitted across Sam’s strikingly beautiful eyes, and it deeply intrigued her. Obviously Sam had more-than-heard of someone who could do wandless magic, and obviously the memory was not a pleasant one…but a fearful one? It was strange. Obviously the witch or wizard of Sam’s association was intensely skilled, and probably one of power, since the skills of wandless magic were usually acquired for an advantage over others…it was puzzling enough that Sam would know someone like this, but to be scared of them, especially someone as fiercely bold as Kyra felt Sam was…it was strange, alright. Kyra felt all of a sudden as if there was a lot about Sam that she didn’t know which of course had to be true, given their limited friendship…but still, it was more than simply not knowing her. Kyra felt like there were secrets that made Sam very different from the average Hogwarts students. Kyra rather liked the mystery, although she was itching to find out more.

“I can tell you’re really enthusiastic about it. I’m sure you’ll make a great wandmaker.”
Kyra grinned, pleased by the praise. “Thanks, I hope so. I’m sure you’ll be a fabulous Auror. From what I recall of your dueling abilities, it certainly seems to fit you.” It was very true—Kyra could easily picture Sam as an Auror. She was bright, talented, skilled, determined…Kyra could see how she could rise very quickly to a position of fame and prominence in the Ministry with those sets of attributes. Kyra was actually quite curious to see where Sam’s future lead.

The corridor was loud and busy as usual. The seventh, sixth, and fifth year students were crawling along talking about graduation, O.W.L.s and N.E.W.Ts. while the younger students were joking around and pulling pranks on each other. One kid had successful managed to jinx a girl with a rainy black cloud that followed her where ever she went. She was all upset and crying while the boys who had jinxed her just stood there and laughed. A prefect reluctantly tore himself away from his enthralling conversation with his friends to lecture the three males. A ghost floated by and rolled their eyes as the student's immaturity while the portraits snickered and gossiped.

There was only one figure that didn't seem to be lost in conversation or even aware that there was anything going on around him. That figure was Alex who was lost riding his book while chewing on an apple he had taken from the dining hall. He was reading a biography on Merlin and wouldn't have noticed if someone instantly burst into flame in front of him. He was never known to be an observant boy and having a book in his hand only made matters worst. He would pause once in a while to take a bit out of his Fuji apple but other than that his full attention was on his book. Truth be told Merlin's life was really fascinating but he was sure other people would find it extremely boring. Still this was the stuff Alex read for fun. Nothing helped him relax after a stressful day then a good, thousand page biography on some dead guy. Yep, this was the way to live.

Obviously Alex was most definitely a bookworm and a bit of socially challenged bookworm at that. It wasn't that he was anti-social, he was just socially awkward. He couldn't carry a normal conversation to save his life and he had no friends whatsoever. Well that wasn't true. He had Ezequiel although he was more of an acquaintance than a friend. It was really sad considering that he was wrapping up his fifth year and he still didn't have a real friend. Hell he barely knew anyone in his house let alone in his year or school. He was pretty sure no one even knew that he existed. It used to bother him but after almost five years he didn't care anymore. He was used to being alone.

Alex used to be lonely and used to feel so pitiful for not being able to make one friend, but now he had just grown used to the fact that he'd always be alone. He wasn't sure why he found it so hard to make friends. He was nice and polite and liked talking ton other people. He loved talking to people, but so far the only person who could stand being with him for more than a minute was Lexi, but she was gone. She had disappear months ago and he had no idea where she had gone. Alex really missed her. He was pretty sure she was his first crush...maybe even love. It didn't matter now. She was gone and he was back to being the loser kid from Dumbledore-that was if anyone bothered noticing he existed. He took a bit of his apple as he stepped over a knocked over suit of armor. It was a miracle he didn't bump into anything or trip down a flight of stairs. Not that it wouldn't be the first time he had to visit the hospital wing because he had broken something but falling down the various staircases in the school. He was pretty sure he had fallen down every single staircase in the school and that was pretty sad.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you
Forget the dead you’ve left, they will not follow you
The vagabond who’s rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore

Darcy hated the corridors. He hated being in them, or near them. It was nothing to do with the corridors themselves. To hate hallways was both ridiculous and insane, and Darcy was neither.

What he hated was the people in them. There were too many of them. He wasn't clumsy, but he was awkward, and he had a bad habit of not paying attention to his surroundings. That always resulted in him traumatizing some first year by landing on top of him due to forward momentum and a lack of awareness about his surroundings. Which inevitably led to his stammered and awkward apologies. And all of them were laughed at or twittered over. He had a hard time speaking to people as it was; being in those corridors made it worse, because he felt like everyone was judging him. After all, nearly everyone there had been run over by him at least once before.

That was why he made a concentrated effort to be the last person to leave his classroom. Less people would be around, and he would make less of a fool of himself. How he could have so many book smarts and be so clueless about people was a constant source of amusement to his family, who did their best to make his life as ridiculous as possible.

Today, however, he'd been in a hurry. He needed the extra time to study for exams, so he hadn't been paying attention when he walked out of the classroom doors.

It wasn't surprising that he didn't watch where he was going, or that he failed miserably to walk in a straight line so people could avoid him. No, he managed to swerve right up against the wall, muttering to himself the whole time about the elemental properties of Transfiguration and goblin wars.

What was surprising was that he somehow managed to avoid hitting the person standing right in front of him.

Darcy drew up short, barely missing the other guy, who, he noticed, was reading avariciously, occasionally pausing to take a bite out of his apple. He was perhaps the only other person Darcy had encountered who paid so little attention to his surroundings.

Before he started to make another awkward apology, he bent to pick up his bag, which he'd managed to drop in surprise at nearly plowing into another person. As he rose, carefully avoiding injuring himself or the other person, as he was wont to do, he caught the title of the guy's book.

"The Life of Merlin: A Study in Magical History." he read aloud. "You're the bloke who checked that out before I could manage to!" The words were out before he could stop them, and a heavy flush accompanied his words. "I wanted that book for research. I was going to write a thesis this summer. Sorry." he interrupted himself. "You don't care. And you probably own that, so sorry again. Damn, I've been looking for that for ages!" he muttered to himself. "I'll just leave you to you reading. Sorry again. I didn't...I didn't mean to disturb you."

If people wanted to be polite they often said Alex lived in his own little world. His siblings often said that Alex lived on his own planet galaxies away from this earth. Alex knew they were true. He really had nothing keeping him to this world except his family and his studies. He wans't complaining though. He liked living in his own world. It made sense in that world and he didn't have to deal with confusing people. Besides living in his own world meant that he had plenty of time to study and to think. Many people often wondered why he was in Dumbledore. He should have been in Ravenclaw and everyone knew it. Even he wasn't completely sure why he was in Dumbledore. He remembered the hat telling him it was because he had a heart of gold. He had no idea what that meant. He just knew that it felt right. Still the entire time he had been here all he had proved was that he belonged in Ravenclaw. Still he supposed the hat knew what it was dong when it sorted him into that house. He just needed to figure out what a heart of gold meant.

Still there was one good thing about being the nerd of Dumbledore. He was a straight A student. He had never gotten lower than an A- EVER. If he did he'd probably die from the shame. He once got a B+ on an assignment and that was because the teacher had miscounted the points. Boy he nearly killed someone when that happened. The worst part was that it was history, his best subject! Oh the nerve of that teacher arguing with him that he got a B+. No way. If it was potions he'd understand, but not history. God some teachers were real morons. Still, evne though potions was his worst subject he still manage to get an A- in it. That was a major accomplishment because he sucked at potions. He hated it with a passion and wished it'd just curl up in a corner and die. Stupid potions.

Alex was so lost in his book that he didn't notice the male heading right towards him. He didn't notice how the boy skidded to a halt or the look of surprise on his face. Alex didn't notice anything. He just noticed the juiciness of his apple and the slightly faded words on the page in front of him. Hell he probably would have just kept on walking, totally oblivious to the fact that he nearly collided with another human being if the other being hadn't said anything.

"The Life of Merlin: A Study in Magical History. You're the bloke who checked that out before I could manage to! I wanted that book for research. I was going to write a thesis this summer. Sorry. You don't care. And you probably own that, so sorry again. Damn, I've been looking for that for ages! I'll just leave you to you reading. Sorry again. I didn't...I didn't mean to disturb you."

Alex looked up surprised and gasped slightly when he saw the other. Where had he come from?! He stared at the other male with his mouth slightly open as he tried to overcome his shock of nearly colliding into someone. What was it with him and nearly colliding or colliding into them? The last time he had made a friend let alone had an actually conversation with someone was when he touched Lexi's hand by accident and managed to knock over an entire stand of chocolate frogs.
"What? Where did you come from?" he asked aghasted, "What?"
He looked at his book and it slowly dawned on him.
"Oh, yeah. Um I guess I am. I'm sorry. I was just really bored and wanted something light to read. "
Alex's eyes lit up when the other male mentioned a thesis. Really? A thesis on Merlin. Wow, he didn't think anyone else did that kind of stuff during the summer-well besides him of course. He slightly panicked as the boy the turned to leave. Wait a minute! How could he mention something as tantalizing as a thesis on Merlin and then walk away?! That wasn't fair! Not fair at all!
"Hey! Wait a minute! Where are you going? Tell me more about this thesis of yours."
