Why was it that even with his exams partially over, Darcy could do nothing about his insane urge to study? If it were Astronomy, or Transfiguration, he could understand. Astronomy was the only subject he'd ever come close to getting an E in, and Transfiguration, while he was good at it, terrified him. But no. Both those exams were over, at least for him. Now all he had left were Charms and Ancient Runes, both of which he excelled at. And yet all he did was study. It was almost like a compulsion; if he didn't study, terrible things would happen. But if he did just study all day every day, he'd turn into one of those cat people. Darcy didn't like cats to begin with, as he was fiercely allergic, but the idea of being the male equivalent of a cat person was enough to make him shudder. But of course, he didn't lift his head from his book. He was making frantic notes, adjustments that would make his Diffindo stronger, possibly strong enough to be used as a defensive spell in dueling, though he couldn't see that in his future. So he was lucky that he missed the other male by less than an inch; normally he would have plowed right into him. Still, it was yet another reason that studying, for him at least, should not include note-taking in the corridors. "What? Where did you come from? What?" Darcy's face burned with embarrassment. He should have just kept walking; the other male had been absorbed enough in his book that he probably wouldn't even have noticed him. But no. He had to stand there, sounding like a complete idiot. "Sorry." he mumbled. "Really, really sorry. I was working...studying...my Charms weren't coming out right." His face, already pink, turned a deep shade of red. As usual, nothing he said came out sounding like a normal human being. "I'll go. Sorry." "Oh, yeah. Um I guess I am. I'm sorry. I was just really bored and wanted something light to read." In spite of his embarrassment, Darcy's brow raised. "Light reading?" he repeated. This guy was without a doubt the nerdiest one in Hogwarts, with the possible exception of Darcy himself. "You're...reading that...for fun?" His hazel eyes were huge behind his reading glasses, which he'd once again neglected to remove. "Don't most people...read fiction? For fun, I mean." "Hey! Wait a minute! Where are you going? Tell me more about this thesis of yours." Darcy had already turned to go when the other guy's voice stopped him. He swung back around, a curious expression on his face. "You want to...you want to hear my thesis?" he repeated, his face flushing again. "Of course you don't." he mumbled. "You're probably just being polite." But the book, his mind chanted. This guy was reading that book for pleasure. It was light reading to him. So maybe he'd understand. "Um. Well." He cleared his throat awkwardly. "I think that before she entrapped him in that tree, Nimueh gave birth to Merlin's child. A boy, I believe." There was more to it than that, of course, but Darcy didn't know this bloke from Voldemort, and he certainly wasn't going to tell him all of his theories just because he appeared interested. Not to mention he wasn't sure if the guy actually was interested or not. He could very well be faking, and Darcy didn't want to embarrass himself any more than he already had." |

Many people assumed Alex was a studying fanatic because they always saw his nose in a book and he did amazing in his classes. The truth was he hated studying with a passion. He studied as much as he had to to excel in his classes, but he wasn't one of those people who studied for fun or as a compulsion. What he loved was learning which was completely different from studying. Learning was taking the time to dedicate himself to a subject that truly fascinated him. Studying was taking the time to memorize what other people thought was fascinating. Don't get him wrong. He often found the things he teachers pointed out interesting, but that wasn't learning. Studying was a demand made by society. Learning was a stand made by the few who truly loved this world. Alex often felt that the people who truly loved to learn and who understood what it really meant truly loved the world. They were the ones who truly understood what they had to lose if the world was ever destroyed. They were often the ones who could see the extreme beauty in life, even at it's most bleakest. Alex often considered the men who risked their lives lovers of learning. Learning was the bug, the desire to know more about their world, about the people around them, and about themselves. It was far more than burying his head in a potions books just so he could pass the exam. However very few people understood the difference. It was quite frustrated to be called a studying freak when he wasn't, but he had grown used to it. He had also grown used to being called anti-social, freak, and retarded. He had to admit that many of his clumsy moments were definitely retarded, but it still hurt. Alex often wondered if his love for learn and thus his love for life was why the hat put him in Dumbledore. It seemed like a very Dumbledorian attitude, but then again how could he know? He had never had the opportunity to meet that amazing wizard-unfortunately. Damn death. "Sorry. Really, really sorry. I was working...studying...my Charms weren't coming out right. I'll go. Sorry." Well now that he knew that there was someone there, he took the chance to study him. The male before him was in Ravenclaw and he had to be a seventh year although that was a bit hard to believe by the way he was acting. Didn't the seventh year usually act like they owned the place? He wore the dorkish glasses known to man and Alex noticed the parchment and quill. Aw another workaholic. It was nice to know there was another one at Hogwarts. "No, don't worry about it," he said slightly alarmed that he caused another male to blush, "I was just surprised, besides it's my fault. I wasn't paying attention either. A charm really? Which one was it? I might be able to help. I'm pretty good at them myself." Alex was so used to kids coming to him for help that he just naturally offered it. It was a knee jerk reaction as sad as that sounded. "Light reading? You're...reading that...for fun? Don't most people...read fiction? For fun, I mean." It was Alex's turned to blush. God damn it why did people always have to rub it in his face that he was beyond usual? All right so he liked to read rather large history books for fun. Was that really so odd? Really? It wasn't like he sat in the corner slicing bunny's heads off. He just liked to read dusty old books. Why did everyone find that so strange? "Yeah...well um. I guess so, but I'm not like most people," he said with a nervous laugh, "Besides what piece of fiction could be more interesting than the life of Merlin. I mean he's Merlin for crying out loud!" Oh yeah that didn't sound dorkish at all. "Um. Well. I think that before she entrapped him in that tree, Nimueh gave birth to Merlin's child. A boy, I believe." The other male seemed shocked that Alex was actually interested and Alex couldn't blame. Most people probably wouldn't care at all and just kept on walking. But Alex was also the one who thought that Merlin's biography was light reading, remember? His eyes grew wide with shock. "Me too! It just makes logical sense!" he said almost bouncing with excitement, "Who do you think he was though and whatever happened to him? I've been trying to figure that out for ages but kept running into dead ends!" Oh dear God, this poor male had unintentionally unleashed the beast. Now Alex wouldn't leave him alone until they solved this little mystery. Alex was so used to people blowing him off that when he found someone who was also a bit of a bookworm, he grabbed onto them and held them tight. That was probably why he didn't have any friends. |

"No, don't worry about it. I was just surprised, besides it's my fault. I wasn't paying attention either. A charm really? Which one was it? I might be able to help. I'm pretty good at them myself." Darcy felt his mouth fall open in shock. No one had ever, ever apologized to him after he ran into them. Which meant that either there was something incredibly wrong with this guy, or he may have found a kindred soul. Anyone who even approached his level of daily oblivion, who read books on Merlin for fun, had to have his type of mind. "Um." he sounded unsure, even to himself, but that couldn't be helped. "Ah...okay then." Then the second part of the other guy's statement registered. Did he really look like the type of person who needed help with Charms? Not that he was adverse to it, from people who knew more than him, but this person was at least a year behind him. Even if he was super intelligent, he couldn't really help. "No." he protested, losing some of his shyness. "I just meant...it works the way it's supposed to. I want to make it work better. Just to see if I could." And that, he supposed, was his real problem. He was fascinated by learning, by knowledge of all sorts, and all he'd ever wanted to do was see if he could make it better. He'd spent so much time tweaking magic that he didn't really know how to do anything else, let alone talk to people, or figure out how those who didn't obsess over learning like he did existed. "Yeah...well um. I guess so, but I'm not like most people. Besides what piece of fiction could be more interesting than the life of Merlin. I mean he's Merlin for crying out loud!" Darcy smiled nervously. "I didn't mean...that the way it sounded." he responded. "It's just....different. My taste runs...along the same lines. I'd rather read about Merlin than some ridiculous spy novel. After all," For the first time, his smile seemed genuine. Shallow dimples appeared in his narrow face, as if he was actually enjoying himself. And, much to his surprise, he sort of was. "it is Merlin, after all." "Me too! It just makes logical sense! Who do you think he was though and whatever happened to him? I've been trying to figure that out for ages but kept running into dead ends!" Darcy knew he was staring. He didn't care. This guy, whoever he was, was the first person to hear his theory that didn't laugh at him or start yawning out of sheer boredom. "You do?" he asked, a note of excitement entering his voice. "I mean...this is unreal." He pushed his glasses higher up on his nose, hazels eyes shining. "Can I see the book for a moment?" he asked, not waiting for an answer. He began flipping pages until he found what he was after. "Look." he pointed. "Merlin was a shapeshifter, and supposedly the child of a virgin and a demon. Though I'm not sure if I believe that. Nimueh was a huntress before he began teaching her his magic. But see how after he supposedly died, there are reports of her and her magic, especially once people started assuming she was the Lady of the Lake?" His voice was full of excitement now as he continued to point out passages. "I think Bradley had some of it right, when he assumed that the Lady of the Lake and Merlin were both titles. The Lady was still performing magic long after she should have died. And so," he paused, mostly for dramatic effect. His voice had lost any trace of shyness or awkwardness it had once held. "was Merlin, or what was purported to be Merlin. I think that Nimueh raised the child because she didn't know Merlin was the father. After all, it wouldn't be difficult for him to take the form of a young, handsome man, one she'd welcome into her bed. So she raised her child, taught him his father's magic. And then she somehow realized that Merlin was the father. Perhaps the child shifted shapes as well. But she abandoned him, and he swore fealty to Britain, for reasons unknown. I think" Darcy's smile turned fierce, the smile of a person who knew exactly what he was up against. "that child took the name of Merlin, not knowing it was actually his own." |

"Ah...okay then. No. I just meant...it works the way it's supposed to. I want to make it work better. Just to see if I could." Alex was equally surprised as the other man's mouth literally dropped open and stared at him like he was some kind of insect. Alex wasn't really sure what to do with that reaction. He wasn't even sure what he did to warrant such a reaction. He had just apologized for nearly causing another accident. It wouldn't be the first time he had nearly ran into someone. Yet the way this guy was acting, it was like Alex had discovered plutonium or something. Man this guy was more awkward than he was and that was saying something! He noticed that the other boy seemed to have taken offense to his offer and Alex bit his lip slightly. He had not meant to offend the other wizard, especially since they seemed to have a lot in common. It had been a long time since anyone had spoken to him, let alone anyone that seemed to similar to himself. It would be a shame to lose him so soon. "I'm sorry," he said quickly, "I didn't mean to offend you. I'm just so used to people begging for my help it becomes a knee jerk reaction." He nearly vibrated with excitment when the other male mentioned improving his spells. "Really? That's awesome. I've tried doing that a few times myself but I'm afraid I'm not that gifted. I'm a better researcher than performer," he said with a small, nervous grin, "Still it's awesome you try to improve your spells. That takes a lot of talent." "I didn't mean...that the way it sounded. It's just....different. My taste runs...along the same lines. I'd rather read about Merlin than some ridiculous spy novel. After all, it is Merlin, after all." Alex shrugged slightly and said, "Yeah, I know. It's probably why I don't have many friends." He laughed nervously because he realized how loserish that sounded but it was true. People didn't hang out with him because he always had his nose in a book and when he wasn't ready he was ranting about some new theory he had just read about. Many people would agree that he really was a bore and he was definitely someone to avoid at a party-that was if he even went to a party. He smiled as the other male seemed to confirm that they really were of kindred spirits. "Exactly!" he said with a gleeful grin. Alex nearly laughed as the other male stared at him. Alex couldn't blame him. He knew all too well that most people found theories very dull and he knew how amazing it was to find someone was genuinely interested. Alex never understood how anyone could find this kind of stuff boring, but then again he wasn't exactly normal. He watched breathlessly as the other boy took his book and he waited with great anticipation as the other male explained his theory. Alex's eyes grew wide as he followed the other male through the book, literally vibrating with excitement as they reached the climax. It was brillant, absolutely brillant and Alex's mind was already racing as to how they could prove it. "That's brillant!" he said patting the other male on the back in excitement, "I mean there's no other way to explain it, even though wizards have been known to live longer than muggles. There's no way Merlin could have been around for so long or at all those places, especially since we've had some first hand accounts on at least a few of Merlin's deaths. It would also make sense if other people took Merlin's name. Actually I remember reading a while ago that there were people-later debunked-running around claiming to be Merlin!" He was literally bouncing now with excitement. He loved this. He love chasing after knowledge, even if it lead to a dead end. It didn't matter. The realy joy and excitement came from the chase. The results were just the small reward one got from wasting so much time. "Still I think you should at least glance at Richard Grinwalt's book Doppelganger. He writes an argument against your position and it'd be good if you knew what some of the counter-arguments were so you could successfully counter them in your paper. You know I think i have it in my room! Or I left it at home because my luggage was heavy enough. But don't worry. I'm pretty sure the library has it as well. Oh this is so exciting! It's been so long since I've found someone who likes to research as much as I do." Yep, the other male was probably going to regret opening his mouth because once someone got Alex going, he never stopped. |

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm just so used to people begging for my help it becomes a knee jerk reaction." "No." Darcy protested. He supposed it was his own fault that everything he said came across the wrong way. Had he made any effort at all to just talk to people in the past few years, he wouldn't have to deal with feeling tongue-tied around his schoolmates, something that inevitably led to him blurting out things that made people feel uncomfortable. "I'm not...I wasn't offended. I'm just...it was a surprise." "Really? That's awesome. I've tried doing that a few times myself but I'm afraid I'm not that gifted. I'm a better researcher than performer. Still it's awesome you try to improve your spells. That takes a lot of talent." Darcy could actually feel the flush rising on his cheeks. He didn't know when or why he'd started coloring at every word other people said to him. It was an annoyance, one that embarrassed him. And when he was embarrassed, he tended to flush even more. It was a never ending cycle, one that he wished he didn't have to deal with. "Not...not really." he stammered, pinching himself on the back of the hand. Snap out of it. he told himself. "I mean...it's not really very practical. I just...like to know how things work, that's all." "That's brillant! I mean there's no other way to explain it, even though wizards have been known to live longer than muggles. There's no way Merlin could have been around for so long or at all those places, especially since we've had some first hand accounts on at least a few of Merlin's deaths. It would also make sense if other people took Merlin's name. Actually I remember reading a while ago that there were people-later debunked-running around claiming to be Merlin!" "I...you...that's..." Darcy stared for a moment. "You...agree with me?" He blinked rapidly for about a minute before his face broke out into a huge grin. "Talk about brilliant. I know! It's like the Loch Ness monster, sort of. Everybody knows that she's just a kelpie, but the Muggles think she's made up, and that the people who've seen her are crazy. Except that's not like Merlin at all." He frowned for a split second before his expression cleared. "But just like some of those Muggles are making things up for attention and some of them have actually seen something, not all of Merlin's reported 'deaths' are real. But it follows that some of them are." "Still I think you should at least glance at Richard Grinwalt's book Doppelganger. It's been so long since I've found someone who likes to research as much as I do." "I've read it." Darcy said absently. "Twice, I think. Still..." His eyes zeroed in on the other male's face. "Wait, you have a copy? I've read it before, but I was planning on using it like you said, as an argument for my paper. But there are no copies in the library; I already checked. I guess nobody's reading about Merlin much any more." |

"No. I'm not...I wasn't offended. I'm just...it was a surprise." Alex raised an eyebrow slightly as the other male protested. He wasn't so used to people being awkward, especially around him of all people. He wasn't very intimidating of a person. In fact, he was often over looking and ignored despite being a prefect. He supposed it was because he was a quiet and lonerish person by nature. His only real friends were his siblings who also attended Hogwarts, and they were often busy having fun without him. He never really minded. He had gotten over being lonely a long time ago and there wasn't anyone who could beat the company of a good book. Still he was slightly put off by how nervous this guy was. Only freaks (Alex included) were this nervous around other people. "Yeah...well I'm kind of used to it," he said giving the other male a sheepish grin, "People are always coming to me for help, even seventh and sixth years. I'm really good at school and stuff." He shrugged slightly, hoping that that didn't come out too arrogant, because hey it was the truth. He was an outstanding student and he was really good at teaching. It was why he secretly wanted to teach at Hogwarts some day...although he was also playing with the idea of writing for the Daily Prophet or have his own show on the wizarding radio some day. Of course he was too shy for something like that, but he liked to dream. "Not...not really. I mean...it's not really very practical. I just...like to know how things work, that's all." He gave the other male what he hoped was a reassuring grin. Maybe the other male suffered from a mental condition of some sort. Why else would he stammer and stutter so much? Still Alex supposed it didn't really matter. It was just something he'd have to get used to, not hard really. It was just a slightly odd. "I don't know. You could surprise someone in a duel with an improved version of a spell," said Alex with a shrug, "and I can understand that. I'm kind of like that myself." "I...you...that's...You...agree with me? Talk about brilliant. I know! It's like the Loch Ness monster, sort of. Everybody knows that she's just a kelpie, but the Muggles think she's made up, and that the people who've seen her are crazy. Except that's not like Merlin at all.But just like some of those Muggles are making things up for attention and some of them have actually seen something, not all of Merlin's reported 'deaths' are real. But it follows that some of them are." Alex laughed and said, "Of course I'm agreeing with you. It's a brillant theory and it's amazes me that others actually disagree with it." Alex listened and nodded his head to the other male's example enthusiastically. It made perfect sense to him. "Exactly and Merlin is a lot like the Loch Ness monster if you think about it. People have seen Merlin and they just don't believe it's Merlin, just like a bunch of muggles have seen the Loch Ness monster they just don't believe it." "I've read it. Twice, I think. Still...Wait, you have a copy? I've read it before, but I was planning on using it like you said, as an argument for my paper. But there are no copies in the library; I already checked. I guess nobody's reading about Merlin much any more." Alex nearly jumped for joy when the other male said he had read it twice. At least he wasn't the only freak. "Yeah, it's in my trunk right now. Just wait here," said Alex gesturing with his hands, "I'll be right back." He practically dashed down the hall and up the stairs to his dorm room. He had never run so fast before. He jumped up the steps and wheeved in and out of the passing students. He breathlessly slumped in front of his common room and gasped the password. He jumped into the common and ran into his room. He tossed the Merlin biography on his bed as he threw his trunk open and started to tossing things out of it. He gave a little aha once he found it. He wrapped his arms tightly around it and ran out of the room, down the hall, down the stairs, and nearly crashed into the other male again. "Here you go," he gasped handed the book to the other male, "I've already marked it up and stuff, but it's still in pretty good condition. Keep it as long as you need it." OOC: Sorry this is crap. |
