Nicole stifled a yawn as she scribbled a few extra lines in her letter. God it really was a boring day. She never thought she’d be sad to be done with her exams. Well she wasn’t sad, she was just bored and she really wished she had something exciting to write about. If she was going to annoy her ‘uncle’ she would want to annoy him with something exciting. It may actually calm him down if he had something worth reading. But no, instead he was stuck reading the usual dribble of a lesbian teenage witch. Boy he should hear some of the things that went on in a lesbian teenager’s life. She snorted at the thought. There were times when she was tempted to write about a few things she and Bailey had done together just to see if he actually read her letters, but she never had the guts. She really didn’t want to deal with him if he actually read it. God that would be a disaster. Of course she never knew if he read his letters because he never replied. She didn’t get one letter back, not one! Was it so hard to ask for one fucking reply? Just one? Apparently it was. Apparently he was too busy to pay attention to her. Lord knows how hectic a new lawyer’s life was. Nicole couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She put her quill and ink bottle away and she rolled up the letter. She would send the letter sometime tomorrow. Hopefully something exciting would happen between now and then. She sighed and watched the thirds throw smoke bombs at each other. The sad thing was that she, Becky, and Cas were just as immature. Boy that made her feel good. She smiled slightly as a fifth year girl was hit by accident. Man was she pissed. Haha. Nicole didn’t even know who the girl was. She just thought it was funny to watch someone get hit in the head with a smoke bomb. She watched the girl grew livid and watched her jinx the fleeing thirds. There was nothing better than watching pranks go awry. But now she really missed Becky and Cas. It had been forever since they had caused trouble together and she was afraid that they were going too mature. God forbid. The thought sent shivers down her spine. Still she couldn’t deny that the three musketeers had sort of grown apart during the last year. Well a lot of stuff had happened. Cas finally found a girl he really liked, Becky had Corey and then lost him and Lord knew where that was going to go, and she had Bailey and her ‘uncle’ wasn’t a wanted man anymore. Jesus it was amazing what could change in a year. She just hoped this was just a phase and pretty soon they’d be back to their old tricks. She missed it. Many people wouldn’t believe it but Nicole was both very young and very old at the same time. She was extremely immature, childish, and carefree but at the same time she was old, tired, and mature beyond her years. She had seen and been through things that no one should have been through and yet she still had the heart of a child-maybe not the innocence. The point was that she was both experienced and naïve, young and old, energetic and exhausted. She was just…Nicole she supposed. Don’t get her wrong, she loved her life and wouldn’t change it for the world, but she also knew that if it wasn’t for her friends she would be a darker, quieter person. She probably would have let the stress of her father’s death, being on the run, and the whole Voldemort thing get to her if it hadn’t been for her friends and their crazy pranks. She often wondered if her ‘uncle’ would have turned out differently if he actually had people who cared for him when he was younger. Then again she may never have met him if things had turned out differently. As selfish as it sounded the thought killed her. She’d rather have him the way he was than to lose him. "Sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to....I didn't hurt you, did I? Do you need to go to the Hospital Wing? I can...nevermind. Sorry. I'm just clumsy." She let out a yelp of pain as she was painfully torn from her thoughts. Something heavy and suddenly pulled on her arm in a rather painful angle. She wrenched it out of the things grip and moved it to see if it was broken. Thank God it was fine, just a little bruised. She sat up and gave the intruder a cold look of death. She watched as he stumbled to his feet and fixed his glasses. Nicole’s fierce anger quickly disappeared as the boy tried to apologize. My God he seemed unable to let out a whole sentence and boy did he look like a geek. Also…was he staring? No, that was just her imagination. She raised an eyebrow slightly and bit back a giggle as he finally quit talking. Seriously dude pull yourself together. “Hey don’t worry about it,” she said with a small smile, “It’s fine. I’ve been through worst. Just calm down. You just surprised me that’s all.” She cocked her head to the side and scanned the boy in front of her. He was either a sixth or seventh year which was surprising considering how awkward he was. He had the nerdiest glasses imaginable and they made Nicole want to laugh. My God this guy was a real winner. Still talking to him was better than lying down on a bench by herself. “I’m Nicole Parker,” she said extending her hand, “What’s your name?” |

Darcy didn't know how his shyness had gotten to be so all consuming. Though nobody who knew him would believe it, he'd once been much more outgoing. He'd never been the class clown, or the most popular guy in school, but he'd been friendly. He'd known how to talk to people. Of course, he'd rarely exercised that ability with anyone but his sisters. And maybe that was the problem. Adria was the most outgoing person he knew, and their younger sisters weren't any better. All of them were social butterflies, flitting from group to group without a care in the world. People had begun to look at him around his third or fourth year, and he could hear them asking each other why he couldn't be more like Adria. Adria was nice and funny and entertaining; Darcy was nice, they admitted, but all he ever talked about was books. He was boring. After a few years, he'd come to believe it. So he stopped talking to people altogether, until his parents managed to convince him it was unhealthy. He'd been trying to make himself more likable, but the more he tried, the more people laughed at him and scorned his efforts. It w as unbearable to put up with. So he was sure the pretty brunette was laughing at him. They all did; it was unavoidable, just as his absentmindedness was. She would brush him off, just like everyone did. Strangely, though he didn't even know her name, the thought of being thought of as just another Hogwarts idiot, the thought burned him. “Hey don’t worry about it. It’s fine. I’ve been through worst. Just calm down. You just surprised me that’s all.” She surprised him by not brushing him off immediately. True, she'd glared at him rather ferociously, but she'd followed it up with a smile that, while not precisely welcome, certainly didn't curse him for his stupidity or blast him up, down, and sideways for being such an idiot. "Are you sure?" The flush still rode high on his cheeks. He squinted at her, looking as if he didn't trust his ears. Unfortunately, the reading glasses obscured with his normal vision. He pulled them off and shoved them in his pocket, cursing himself for not picking a more stylish pair. It was just his luck that the first time he managed to talk to another person, he had to do it wearing the geekiest, largest glasses known to man. He ran a hand through his shaggy brown hair, a nervous habit that he'd never been able to break. "I really am sorry. I wasn't...I didn't watch where I was going." He swallowed audibly, trying not to stare outright. She was so pretty. Not like most girls, with their fake blonde hair and fake tans and perfect smiles. Her eyes were the brightest, most unusual shade of blue he'd ever seen, and her hair looked really soft. Merlin, he was going crazy. He'd probably landed there already. "Um, I didn't hurt you though, right? I mean, you're fine?" “I’m Nicole Parker. What’s your name?” He flushed again. She was the first person he'd talked to in over a year who had shown any interest in who he was. Or maybe she was just being polite, but she didn't think he was a freak. That was an odd occurrence in his world. "Um." he stared at her outstretched hand, looking as if he wondered how many germs she had. Finally, he clasped it in his own. It was cool and smooth, and he felt like he'd been jolted by lightning. He dropped it immediately. "I'm...Darcy? Summers. Darcy Summers." He shook his head, as if trying to collect his thoughts. "It's...nice to meet you?" Inwardly, he cursed himself. Did he have to sound like such an idiot? Why did he have to make everything sound like a question? “I’m Nicole Parker,” she said extending her hand, “What’s your name?” |

While Nicole was far from a quiet or shy person she wasn't a social butterfly either. She didn't thrive in large crowds or jumping from group to group like some kind of social whore. She was open, warm, and friendly but she wasn't someone who made friends for the hell of it. She chose her real friends carefully. She had many acquiantances but she only had four real friends-Becky, Cas, Dayla, and Bailey. Those four people were the only people she truly trusted in this world and the only people outside her family who she actually cared about. Everyone else could go to Hell for all she cared. Of course people never saw that side of her. They just thought she was the funny, outgoing Dumbledore who knew everyone but no one really knew her. She likes it that way. It was the safest way to be and it suited with her lifestyle. She had learned the hard way that letting the entire world in only brought trouble. It was a miracle that her lifestyle hadn't made her a social outcast. It could have easier scared her into her shell and she could be the shadow that slid through life without having the chance to truly live. She knew that a lot of people turned out that way after living the life she lived, but she thought it was a stupid way to live. Just because her family wasn't on the right side of the tracks didn't mean she couldn't experience life or make friends. She just had to be careful on how she did it. That was actually why she adopted the happy go luck persona. No one ever expected the people laughing their head off over a stupid prank to be related to a Death Eater or knee deep in the dark arts. They always thought the depressed goth was the Death Eater wannabe. No one seemed to truly understand that looks could be deceiving. So while Nicole was friendly, she was also a little distant. She never talked about herself-even to her best friends-and people could know her years and they still hadn't scratched the surface. It was a defense mechanism and it had worked so far. Of course she wasn't the best behaved person in the world-as her best friends could tell you. Once someone really got to know her they realized that she was an extreme prankster and probably a bit crazy. But even that was a defense mechanism. Sure it got her in a lot of trouble and put her under a lot of teacher's radar but that was why it was so brillant. She didn't tried and hid that she was troubled as that only drew unwanted attention. Instead she acted like any immature teenager and instead of teachers investing in her they simply blew her off as another loser kid who would end up working in the Leaky Cauldron someday. She wasn't worth their time because she couldn't possibly know anything. She was too much of a goof to know anything. Still just because she wasn't a social butterfly didn't mean she didn't know how to talk to strangers. The thing was she didn't need people. She could live with them and she could live without them. she didn't need friends to survive. Yeah her four friends had helped her a lot in their own crazy way but she knew they wouldn't be friends forever. Life simply didn't work that way. They'd grew apart as they grew up and she was okay with that. Yeah it would suck and she really wished she was wrong, but it wouldn't kill her. It'd hurt a lot just because they were the only people outside her family who she'd literally die for, but she'd get over it. Things didn't last forever, it was a simple, sad fact of life, but she wasn't going to cry over it. She'd just enjoy her friends while they were still friends and try to brace herself for the inevitable. The strange thing was she didn't need people but she hated being alone. She supposed it was because when she was alone she only had her nightmares and fears for company. She hated to admit it, but she had scars from her childhood, scars she had ignored because that was what they did. Still they came out when she was alone...God she hated being alone. When she said alone, she didn't mean being alone in a room. She could deal with that. She meant being alone in the world. She had experienced that when she had been on the run and God it had been the most miserable experience in her life. She didn't like to think about her brief stint on the run because she had to admit that it came back to haunt her in form of nightmares. She would sometimes wake up with a cry, waking her roommates up in the process. She always blew off their questions and they had learned to just let things be. Still that utterly crushing and hopeless feeling nawed at her and she seemed destined to be haunted by it for the rest of her life. "Are you sure? I really am sorry. I wasn't...I didn't watch where I was going." Her smile curved in amusement as the boy continued to trip over his own words. Jesus. One would think he had never talked to a human being before. "Yeah, I'm sure. Listen I'm not one of those people who pretend everything's okay when it's not. If it wasn't okay I would have jinxed you five mintues ago, so chill out, okay?" She wasn't sure why the male was so awkward. She wasn't that intimidating was she? She didn't think so and she doubted anyone else would find her thin, wiry frame intimidating. She stifled a laugh as the boy squinted to look at her. Weren't glasses supposed to help someone's vision? "Aw," she said as he took his glasses off, "I liked those. They were very fashionable." She gave him a joking smirk. all right so they were probably the saddest excuse for eyewear she had ever since, but their dorkiness actually made them cool. Don't ask her to explain it, just go with it. "That much is obvious. You might want look around next time. There are very few people as forgiving as I am," she said acting all dramatic. "Um, I didn't hurt you though, right? I mean, you're fine?" Nicole had to admit that while he was pitifully dorky, he was also slightly alarming. She wasn't sure if it was because she had never had a male this nervous around her before or the fact that he kept staring. What was wrong with him? Had he never seen a female before? God he was making her so uncomfortable. And why was he blushing all the time? Did he have a disorder or something. God Nicole didn't think she had ever met someone so socially awkward and that was saying something. She lived with 'Uncle' Eric for crying out loud! "I told you I'm fine," she said with a laugh, "Believe me after breaking shattering both my legs and my right arm trying to bungee jump out of my room, a little tug on the arm isn't going to hurt me." All right so she twisted the details a little. She hadn't been trying to bungee jump out of her room, she had jumped out of the hotel her father had been staying at after those assholes had found them. Thank God she had managed to find a hospital near by to help heal her bones otherwise she probably wouldn't have been here today talking to this dork. Still at least she survived....unlike her father. "Um. I'm...Darcy? Summers. Darcy Summers. It's...nice to meet you?" She raised an eyebrow as he just stared at her hand. What the hell? She didn't carry any diseases-as far as she knew anyway. God what was wrong with him? She also frowned when he let go of her hand almost as soon as he touched it. What the hell? "I don't have cooties you know," she said with a little smirk. This time she laughed as his nerves. Seriously? He wasn't even sure what his name was? "You sound a little unsure there," she said with a smirk, "Do you need a second to figure out if that's your name or not?" My God it seemed like this boy had never had a civil conversation before. Poor guy. She really felt bad for him. His parents must be Nazis or something. "Is it nice to meet me? I don't know. I like to think so, but you tell me." |

Darcy couldn't understand what had gone wrong with him. His parents....okay, his parents were pretty weird. His mother had never been able to properly show emotion- she thought it was appropriate to give her children wedgies and talk to them about sex when they were five. His father was only slightly better, being completely Quidditch mad, which was something he'd never understood, even as a child. But his sisters, even though they were a little overexcited about life in general, were normal. They were all smart (though Adria liked to pretend otherwise), but none of them were as obsessed as he was with knowledge. They all managed to have lives, whereas he was lucky if he remembered to eat regular meals. And without fail, he was unable to relate to people. He understood his sisters, his parents, but that was the benefit of living with them his whole life. It was other people, people who wouldn't be compelled to talk to him because he was related to them, that he didn't understand. He didn't quite get why they laughed or cried or what made them fail that last Transfiguration exam (which, in his opinion, hadn't been all that bad). He just didn't get them. "Yeah, I'm sure. Listen I'm not one of those people who pretend everything's okay when it's not. If it wasn't okay I would have jinxed you five mintues ago, so chill out, okay?" Darcy flushed again. No matter what he said, it was always the exact wrong thing. He'd never been able to get anything right. "Um." he mumbled, staring at the ground. "Sorry. Sorry." he repeated. "I...um...thanks for not jinxing me? Not that you would have been wrong to jinx me...I'm just...glad you didn't?" God, he was such a 'tard. No wonder people never spoke to him. "Aw, I liked those. They were very fashionable." Darcy stilled abruptly. "You're making fun of me." he said quietly. His expression, never one of great joy, fell abruptly. He should have known that there was no possible way he could ever interact with another person and have it turn out well. "Not that I wouldn't make fun of me too." "That much is obvious. You might want look around next time. There are very few people as forgiving as I am," He stilled. Was she joking with him? No one did that. How was he supposed to react? And what if she wasn't joking? What if this girl was really just being forgiving? But what if she wasn't? Stranger things had happened, after all. He was standing there, actually talking to another human being, and the world hadn't exploded yet. So maybe that was a sign that he should stop being such a blasted ninny. "Um." he smiled shyly. "Right. I'll....get on that." "I told you I'm fine. Believe me after breaking shattering both my legs and my right arm trying to bungee jump out of my room, a little tug on the arm isn't going to hurt me." Darcy stared. "I don't mean to be rude," he started, shy smile still in place. "but isn't that pretty dangerous. I mean...if you bungee jump out of a window...aren't you...asking to get hurt?" He realized how awful that sounded, and quickly amended his statement. "Not that I'd want you to get hurt, I mean...I'm glad you're fine. If you're sure, I mean." "I don't have cooties you know," He flushed even deeper. "Um." Damn it, why did he always sound like such an idiot? "I don't...believe in cooties. I just...was surprised." Right, because that sounded so much better. "You sound a little unsure there. Do you need a second to figure out if that's your name or not?" For the first time, a lick of frustration showed in his eyes. "No." he said softly. "I'm Darcy. We've....had classes...together before." The smart, sarcastic retort had made him realize why she seemed vaguely familiar. He'd only seen her from the back before, but it seemed like he'd heard that same wit before. Of course, it had only been a couple of times, so he was probably completely wrong. "I mean, I think. You're a sixth year? Right?" "Is it nice to meet me? I don't know. I like to think so, but you tell me." It seemed his flush was permanent. "I...don't know." he said quietly. "We've only just met. But...you didn't jinx me....and you're talking to me...so it can't be that bad." |

It was true that Nicole liked to bitch and complain about how hard her life was and how no one could possibly understand it, but if truth be told it wans't that bad. Sure what her family did for a living was questionable and there were times when she had been made uncomfortable because she accidently caught a glimpse of what they did and she often had to live a double life just because it was safer that way, but all in all it wasn't that bad. She supposed she was lucky that way. She had met other children who had been in her position or similar and they turned out to be real freaks. She supposed it was because their parents didn't make time for them or simply didn't give a shit about them or forced them to stay silent and hidden. She had seen parents treat their kids like slaves, they couldn't think or act for themselves. Their purpose in life was to be the next evil wizard of the family and that was it. She noticed that that happened with males more than females but she had also seen a few crazy mothers push their children to be mini-mes of their parents. Nicole could understand the desire to have someone to continue the family tradition of being evil, but to turn their children into clones never made much sense to her. How was a kid supposed to run a family if they couldn't think for themselves and who was to say they'd remain evil once their parents kicked the bucket? Thankfully Nicole never really had to deal with that. Nicole often wondered if the reason her father didn't push her was because she was a girl. The thought made her frown slightly but in retrospect it was probably a good thing she was a girl. She'd hate to be pushed and molded like that. She also wondered if 'Uncle' Eric and 'Uncle' Julius had anything to do with how her father treated her. It would be stupid to think they didn't have any say in the matter. That was just the way the family worked. There was no such thing as privacy. Everyone had to have a say. It was quite irksome at times, but she didn't regret having 'Uncle' Eric looking after her. She wasn't too fond of 'Uncle' Julius though. God he gave her the creeps. He just had that look. She didn't know why the others tolerated him. Yep, looking back on it she was definitely raised by her father, 'Uncle' Eric, and 'Uncle' Julius and they all had their own distinct role. While her father wasn't the perfect man by any stretch of the imagination, he was a pretty decent father. He pushed her to make friends and to enjoy life and he never failed to get her anything she really wanted. He kind of spoiled her if truth be told and he was rather lenient when she broke the rules. He probably tolerated her wild streak a little more than he should have but oh well. Of course he had his faults, like his constant need to bring whores home, his gambling addiction, and he was too trusting. 'Uncle' Eric had definitely been the disciplinarian. Her father would often send her to him when she had done something wrong and he didn't have the heart to punish her. 'Uncle' Eric was never unusually cruel to her. In fact all he had to do really was stare her down and she was on her knees begging for forgiveness. 'Uncle' Eric was also the cuddly teddy bear in some respects. Whenever she was hurt or needed advise or simply some company she went to him. She knew it was hard to believe but he wasn't a total ass and she knew how to break him. All she had to do was quiver her lip a little and he'd give her a quick and awkward but comforting hug before asking her what was wrong. He was also her guardian and she knew she would be safe whenever he was around. Lord knows he had his problems, but he probably took the best care of her. 'Uncle' Julius on the other hand...He was a strange man and she could tell that there was some tension between her father and 'Uncle' Eric and 'Uncle' Julius on how she should be raised. 'Uncle' Julius was definitely the type of guy who would have a kid just to mold them. He often pushed her to do things she knew was wrong and he taught her any of the spells she knew. The only thing she appreciated about him was that he fought to have her more involved in the business. While her father and 'Uncle' Eric wanted her to have a relatively normal life and kept her far away from the family business, 'Uncle' Julius tried to drag her in. Personally she wanted to help out and often felt hurt when she was denied. She wasn't completely useless, she just acted that way. So to make a long story short, the reason she wasn't completey anti-social was because she had had a relatively normal childhood despite everything. Even though they often traveled all over the place, her family made sure it was still relatively stable and not too crazy. It wasn't perfect and there were things Nicole would rather forget, but all in all it wasn't too bad. It was just different. "Um. Sorry. Sorry. I...um...thanks for not jinxing me? Not that you would have been wrong to jinx me...I'm just...glad you didn't?" Oh my God, if this kid didn't pulled himself together she was either going to bust a gut from her suppressed laughter or she was going to slap him silly. Jesus it was painful how socially awkward he was. Nicole never thought it'd be possible to be this awkward. He really needed to learn how to relax otherwise he was going to give himself a heart attack by the age of thirty. "Dude, chill," she said placing her hands on his shoulder in an attempt to get him to relax, "It's fine, but if you don't knock it out I am going to jinx you." She gave him a smile to let him know she was joking, but seriously it seemed like she was going to have to give a class on chilling 101. "Now just go what I say all right? First you got to stop being so rigid. Loosen up a bit. Then you're going to take a deep breath and slowly let it out. In, out," she siad breathing with him, "In, out. See? Don't you feel more relaxed?" "You're making fun of me. Not that I wouldn't make fun of me too." Nicole was slightly surprised as his expression fell. She hadn't meant to hurt his feelings. She was just teasing him a little. Damn. Who knew he'd be so sensitive? "Hey, don't take it personally. I was just joking. I didn't mean anything by it." "Um. Right. I'll....get on that. I don't mean to be rude, but isn't that pretty dangerous. I mean...if you bungee jump out of a window...aren't you...asking to get hurt? Not that I'd want you to get hurt, I mean...I'm glad you're fine. If you're sure, I mean." Yes! A smile! It was nice to know that this guy knew how to smile. She had been worried for a while. She laughed and just shrugged. "Maybe I like pain. For all you know I could be a suicidial pain fanatic who has nothing to live for," she said dramatically, "Woe is me. Life is so meaningless." She snorted and shook her head. "Seriously though, I don't know. It seemed like a good idea at the time and I know you don't want me to get hurt. You'd be a real asshole if you wanted me to get hurt." "Um. I don't...believe in cooties. I just...was surprised." Nicole raised an eyebrow. Oh yeah that sounded normal? Why did she always attract the freaks? "Surprised at what? That I had hands?" "No. I'm Darcy. We've....had classes...together before. I mean, I think. You're a sixth year? Right?" "We have?" she said utterly bewildered, "Yeah, I'm a sixth year from Dumbledore....what class did we have together?" If Darcy was right she would feel like such a bitch. It was kind of sad if they had had the same class together and she had no idea. Damn it. She knew she was a space ace but she would still feel horrible that she had never noticed him before or that he didn't even seem semi-familiar, especially since he seemed to recognize her. God damn it maybe this was why she should pay more attention in class. "I...don't know. We've only just met. But...you didn't jinx me....and you're talking to me...so it can't be that bad." Nicole smiled and said with a wink, "Dude, here's a little tip. If a girl asks if it's nice to meet her you ALWAYS say yes. You might hurt her feelings if you don't." |

People were just too complicated. Darcy was aware that his lack of effort over the past several years was perhaps part of the reason he was so overwhelmed by people. But a large part of him chose to ignore that reality in his own defense. His family, after all, was the main reason he'd put forth no effort. Perhaps he would have turned out differently if his parents and siblings weren't who they were. As much as they loved each other, he didn't understand how his parents and younger sisters functioned. Adria was less of a mystery, but he attributed that to sharing nearly everything for the first ten or so years of their lives. And his parents didn't understand him. If they did, they wouldn't have pushed him so hard to be more outgoing. In other circumstances, he thought he could have learned to approach people, even to be vaguely friendly. But no one gave him the chance to do it on his own; his parents were constantly shoving him into unfamiliar and awkward situations with people he barely knew, and his sisters dragged him around like a rag doll, flitting from person to person so that he could never keep a single name or face straight. So yes. It was entirely their fault. Screw being rational for once. They were part of the problem. That was his answer, and he was sticking to it. "Dude, chill. It's fine, but if you don't knock it out I am going to jinx you." Darcy stilled abruptly when she placed her hand on his shoulder. He wasn't used to people just touching him, other than Adria; she wouldn't bloody leave him alone half of the time. And he definitely wasn't used to random girls doing the touching, let alone pretty ones like her. He contemplated asking her to remove her hand, but even for him that sounded prissy and stupid. "Sorry." He cursed the flush that now seemed to permanently inhabit his cheeks. "I'm sorry. I'm not....very chill." "Now just go what I say all right? First you got to stop being so rigid. Loosen up a bit. Then you're going to take a deep breath and slowly let it out. In, out. In, out. See? Don't you feel more relaxed?" For the first time in ages, Darcy found himself laughing out loud. Of course, being Darcy, his attempt to hold the laughter back resulted in a choking/coughing fit. Not for the first time, he lamented his inability to do anything normally. "I don't think that was very relaxing." he said without thinking. "But I don't...well, I don't think...I feel quite so...rigid." His smile, though still shy, came more easily, and the blush staining his face appeared to retreat slightly. "Thanks." "Hey, don't take it personally. I was just joking. I didn't mean anything by it." His face was in flames. He could feel it, and if Darcy had felt compelled to look (which he didn't), he was sure he'd be able to see it just by checking over his nose. "Oh." he said quietly, staring at the ground. He had to resist a strong urge to shuffle his feet. "I...I see. I'm not...not very good with recognizing jokes. Sorry." And Merlin, if he wasn't the most pathetic excuse for human being in the history of the world, he'd eat his own socks. "Maybe I like pain. For all you know I could be a suicidial pain fanatic who has nothing to live for. Woe is me. Life is so meaningless." For a moment, Darcy stared at her in horror. Then, gradually, his brain caught up with him, and he smiled again. "It...it must be meaningless." he replied without thinking. He managed to control the flushing, but it was a close call. "I mean, if you're stuck here talking to me...you must not...have much going for you." "Surprised at what? That I had hands?" He drew his own hand back automatically. Something about touching her made him even more of a bumbling idiot than normal. "No!" he protested, probably a bit too emphatically. "I just....I don't talk to people much. I mean....that's not what I meant. I do talk to people...I'm just not very good at it. And people...don't talk to me." He knew he was babbling, and took a deep breath in an effort to calm the flow of his speech. "You...nobody introduces themselves to me, because nobody cares to know me." And if that didn't sound like the most over dramatic drivel, he was a monkey's uncle. "We have? Yeah, I'm a sixth year from Dumbledore....what class did we have together?" Darcy thought for a moment. He spent most of his time ignoring other people out of self preservation, so he wasn't stalling to seem like less of a geek, though if the thought had come to him, he might have employed that tactic. "Charms?" he said finally. "I'm not sure. You weren't there very often." As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he regretted them. "I...I didn't mean that the way it sounded." he continued, eyes wide with shock. "Sorry. Dammit, that came out wrong." He was sure that Nicole was going to politely make her excuses and leave him be, but he felt compelled to try once more. "I'm not...very good with people, and I'm not very....observant. I'm...I'm sure you were there, I just didn't notice." "Dude, here's a little tip. If a girl asks if it's nice to meet her you ALWAYS say yes. You might hurt her feelings if you don't." His heart pounded. He hadn't missed the wink, or the smile. Was she flirting with him? The idea was preposterous, especially since he had absolutely no idea how girls flirted, not to mention he thought it very unlikely that anyone would choose to aim at him. Still, she was pretty, and she was the first person to show him any kindness in some time. "Right." He offered up another smile. "It's very...nice to meet you, Nicole." |

In Nicole's view most people were simply tools that could be used to her advantage. They weren't complicated or mysterious. In fact they were quite simple. The basic fact about people was that they would always look out for themselves and only do anything if it was in their best interest. People weren't good or selfless. If they talked to you at all they usually wanted something and the trick was to found out what and use it against them. Nicole had been around long enough to know how to manipulate people. She could be quite good at it when she tried. Of course she had gotten a little rusty as it had been a while since she needed to cut a deal with someone-the last time had when she had to beg her 'uncle' to let her live with him. Still, even though her general rule covered about 99% of the people out there, there was that one percent that throw her. Darcy was probably going to be part of that one percent. He was a total loser, apparently unable to hold a conversation of any kind, and a total space ace. The thing was he didn't seem to want anything from her. In fact it seemed that he just wanted to crawl under a rock somewhere and disappear. This was rather strange, but then again she had started the conversation. In fact she had been the one who wanted something in this conversation, a chance to escape her bored. Still it seemed like this boy seriously didn't want anything of anyone. Nicole wasn't sure what to do with someone like Darcy. She had never met someone so...blah and so social awkward. It was kind of unnerving if truth be told. "Sorry. I'm sorry. I'm not....very chill." Nicole noticed how he stiffened up at his touch and she hid a frown. She hadn't meant to offend him or anything. She just wanted to him help relax. She slowly slid her hands off his shoulder and watched as he seemed to stiffen up even more. Damn that wasn't what she was going for. But why was he so uncomfortable being touched by her? Was it because he was just one of those weirdos who hated being touched or was it because she was...gay? Had he heard about her? Was the reason he was so nervous, uptight, and just plan painful to be around was because he was awkward being around a gay? If that was true that would suck, although it wouldn't be a first time. "I can see that," she said with a small smirk to hid her doubt, "All right, dude, first role to be chill, stop apologizing for everything. It just makes you look nervous and nerdy." "I don't think that was very relaxing. But I don't...well, I don't think...I feel quite so...rigid. Thanks." Nicole looked slightly alarmed as he had a coughing/choking fit. Dear God what was that supposed to be? Was he trying to cough up a hairball or was he simply trying to throw up on her? All right, jeez she would never touch him again. "Well no I'm sure that wasn't." She smiled as he started to smile. Ah, there you go. See he wasn't incapable of being human now was he? "Now that I like," she said, her smile growing as his blush started to disappear, "You should smile more. You'll have the girls flocking to you if you do." "Oh. I...I see. I'm not...not very good with recognizing jokes. Sorry." And he was blushing again. God damn it. Well at least she knew it was possible for the seemingly permanent blush to recede. God, why did he have to apologize for everything and had he never heard a joke before? Poor guy. Did no one ever show this kid how to function in a normal conversation? "You don't get out much do you?" asked Nicole cocking her head to the side. "It...it must be meaningless. I mean, if you're stuck here talking to me...you must not...have much going for you." She nearly died laughing at the look of horror on his face and was about to quickly explain that she was just joking, when he finally caught on. All right he was a little slow but that was all right. "Hey," she said giving his arm a playful slap, "I've got a lot going for me thank you very much and I wouldn't say that. You're not the most...graceful person to talk to, but you are entertaining." "No! I just....I don't talk to people much. I mean....that's not what I meant. I do talk to people...I'm just not very good at it. And people...don't talk to me. You...nobody introduces themselves to me, because nobody cares to know me." Nicole snorted as he denied being surprised she had hands, but she frowned slightly as he started to explain his predictament. Now that wasn't right at all. Maybe Darcy wasn't the most exciting or social person to talk to but he was nice and entertaining and sweet. "Well...we'll just have to fix that," she said with a grin, "That will be one of my goals, to get you to make more friends." She added a determined head nod to tell him that there was no point in arguing. When Nicole made a goal she stuck to it...until she found it boring anyway. "Charms? I'm not sure. You weren't there very often. I...I didn't mean that the way it sounded. Sorry. Dammit, that came out wrong. I'm not...very good with people, and I'm not very....observant. I'm...I'm sure you were there, I just didn't notice." She laughed as his eyes widen. Jeez, dude calm down. Man she had her work cut out for her. "Dude, chill. It's cool. I'd actually be a little freaked out if you knew every day I was there and every day I wasn't, besides I tend to skip classes a lot so it's no surprise you didn't see me there very often," she said with a little shrug. What? She didn't find academics very important. Sue her. "Right. It's very...nice to meet you, Nicole." "And it is a pleasure to meet you, Darcy," she said extending her hand for him to shake...that was if he wasn't afraid of lesbian cooties. |

"I can see that. All right, dude, first role to be chill, stop apologizing for everything. It just makes you look nervous and nerdy." Darcy took a deep breath. There had been the slightest hint of a question in her eyes as she let go of him. She was probably wondering if he was really as mentally deficient as he was acting. Either that or she thought he was offended by her somehow. Why was it that everyone he met, if he managed to converse with them for longer than two seconds, thought he was offended by something? Did he give off that 'I'm better than you and I know it, and what is that funny smell?' vibe? Did people think that he thought they were lower than him somehow? The convoluted nature of that thought made his head hurt. So he tried to let it go. Trying, of course, was different from succeeding. He hated feeling awkward and stupid and tongue-tied. So, naturally enough, that was the only way he felt around most people. And he hated feeling like he was being pitied. Though it was rather out of character, he figured that anyone who decided to offer up that sort of false pity by attempting a conversation with him deserved all the horrors that accompanied the gesture. But he also had a feeling that Nicole wasn't the type who offered pity a whole lot, and that she just saw him as someone rather unusual. Merlin, that was what he hoped. So he made a concentrated effort to calm down and do as she asked. "Right." he paused, taking another breath. He tried a wry smile. It felt odd on his face, but dammit, he was trying to be normal. "I'm sure you already figured it out....but I am. Nervous and nerdy, I mean." "Well no I'm sure that wasn't. Now that I like. You should smile more. You'll have the girls flocking to you if you do." Sure enough, Darcy blushed. He couldn't help it. Nicole had mentioned girls flocking to him. It was a thought that more than slightly terrified him. He could barely handle talking to one girl; he didn't know what would happen if he tried being around more than one. "Um." he muttered, half under his breath. "That would probably kill me." "You don't get out much do you?" "They've kept me locked in the top of Ravenclaw tower for the last three years." He wanted to smack himself in the face. He didn't do jokes or sarcasm well, normally didn't even attempt it. But she'd joked with him, and she obviously thought he was this serious loser (which, okay, he was), so even if his attempt failed miserably, as he expected it would, it couldn't make him look any worse. He hoped. Still, just in case. "I just...I'm not good at talking to people. So I don't do it often, and when I do, I fail. So I...no, I don't get out much." And since that made him sound too nerdy, he tried again. "My sisters have tried, but...well, you've witnessed what happens when I...open my mouth." "Hey, I've got a lot going for me thank you very much and I wouldn't say that. You're not the most...graceful person to talk to, but you are entertaining." Darcy laughed again. This time, there was no choking, thank Merlin. He didn't know if it was because she was funny, or because he had a warped sense of humor. He suspected it might be both. "If by...not graceful you mean that I'm...an extremely inept conversationalist...then yes, I'd have to agree." When she slapped him, he stared again. He wasn't sure how to react. Was he supposed to hit her back? His hand lifted automatically to do so, but then he recalled being told time and time again not to hit women. Why was life so complicated? Feeling incredibly awkward, he let his hand fall back to his side. Either she'd notice or she wouldn't, but either way, he felt stupid. "Well...we'll just have to fix that. That will be one of my goals, to get you to make more friends." Darcy's mouth fell open. "Are you...trying to fix me?" he asked. "Not that I'm opposed, but....why would you be willing to spend that much time with me?" He blushed again. "I mean, you're....well, I'm me. Talk about painful." "Dude, chill. It's cool. I'd actually be a little freaked out if you knew every day I was there and every day I wasn't, besides I tend to skip classes a lot so it's no surprise you didn't see me there very often," "Oh." He bit his lip. "Um, well, I guess it's good that you know, I'm not a stalker. Not that you're not worthy of stalking, but I....well, I don't." Worthy of stalking? WORTHY OF STALKING?? What was wrong with him? "Forget I said that." he continued. "Please forget I said that. Um...I could help you out some...if you need it, I mean." He paused, his face again in flames. "Not that I'm saying you do, but if you're having trouble...since you're helping me, it's the least I could do. I mean, if you want." "And it is a pleasure to meet you, Darcy," He stared again. For some reason, he rather thought she meant it. It was rather pleasant, truth be told. "Um." he said, clasping her hand in his own. He couldn't control the flush, didn't even try. But at least this time he'd managed to touch her without visibly recoiling (at least in her mind). That had to be progress. Right? |

Nicole often ended up doing something that offended or insulted the person talking to her. Sometimes she did it on purpose (like with Corey) and sometimes it just happened. People usually had two kind of reactions to her. Either they loved her or they hated her. There really was no gray when she was involved. She didn't really mind though. She wasn't here to make the most friends. She just wanted to enjoy her life and herself. Still when people were awkward around her or seemed nervous, she assumed it was because she had either overdone it with the flirting or they just didn't know what to make of her. She never apologized unless it was something serious (like a prank firing on the wrong person). Instead she just shrugged it off and kept being her lovable self until the person gave up and left. Actually it wouldn't surprise her if Darcy got up and left. He didn't seem like the type who appreciated her craziness. Now Nicole didn't pity Darcy-yet anyway. He hadn't been around her long enough to be worthy of her pity. Seriously though Nicole didn't believe in pity. It hadn't been tolerated when she was a kid. Pity was synomous with weakness which was synomous with death. So, no Nicole did not pity him. she rarely gave anyone pity and she NEVER expected it from anyone. If anyone dared to sure her pity she'd hate instantly. God she hated that shit. She didn't need their pity or their understanding. Argh. But back to Darcy, she didn't pity him. She just found him amusingly fascinating. He was such...a well dork it almost seemed impossible. Still couldn't wait until she introduce this lovely freak to her freaky friends, Cas and Becky. Ever since Corey decided to hide on them they had lost their straight man. Maybe Darcy could be Corey's replacement? "Right. I'm sure you already figured it out....but I am. Nervous and nerdy, I mean." Nicole rolled her eyes and said, "Doesn't mean you have to act like the school's biggest nerd. There are plenty of nerds that are cool and you know why? Because they act cool. I mean have you seen Potter's pictures? Talk about a total loser, but he grew up to defeat the Dark Lord, right?" She had no idea where she was going with this, but it seemed to make sense so far. "Now everyone knows the secret to being cool is to act look you own the world. You got to entire a situation-any situation-and be like 'bitch I own you'! Make sense?" "Um. That would probably kill me." Once again he blushed. Dear God. Nicole was beginning too wonder if there was an anti-blushing charm and if there was what the hell was the incantation? "Are you kidding me?" she said her eyes widening slightly in shock, "That's like every boy's fantasy! You mean to tell me you've never stopped to daydream about having five girls all over you?" Lord knows she had, many times. "They've kept me locked in the top of Ravenclaw tower for the last three years. I just...I'm not good at talking to people. So I don't do it often, and when I do, I fail. So I...no, I don't get out much. My sisters have tried, but...well, you've witnessed what happens when I...open my mouth." She giggled at his comment, partly because it was rather humorous and partly because she wanted to give Darcy a little confidence boost. At least he was starting to come out of his shell. "Still you do know the only way to get better at something is to practice, besides I think you're better than you think. I mean look at us, we've been having at least a twenty minute conversation and I don't think you're a total freak." "If by...not graceful you mean that I'm...an extremely inept conversationalist...then yes, I'd have to agree." Yes! A normal laugh. Now they were getting somewhere. "Well there's that and you're habit of attempting to pull my arm off just a little while ago," she said with one of her infamous smirks, "but hopefully I don't have to teach you that that is not the proper way of starting a conversation." She couldn't help but laugh as he automatically raised his hand just to drop it again. Oh brother. "And hitting someone in the middle of a conversation is never a wise thing to do," she giggled. "Are you...trying to fix me? Not that I'm opposed, but....why would you be willing to spend that much time with me? I mean, you're....well, I'm me. Talk about painful." "Yeah, I'm trying to fix you. I'm surprised no one's tried yet." She brushed a strand of hair out of her face and tilted her head slightly as Darcy sputtered over the fact that she wanted to help him. "Because I'm bored," she said with a shrug, "and I think it'd be amusing and if i don't start doing some good deals soon I'm going to be going to Hell on the express train." "Oh. Um, well, I guess it's good that you know, I'm not a stalker. Not that you're not worthy of stalking, but I....well, I don't. Forget I said that. Please forget I said that. Um...I could help you out some...if you need it, I mean. Not that I'm saying you do, but if you're having trouble...since you're helping me, it's the least I could do. I mean, if you want." She nearly died laughing. Oh good Lord, no one had ever told her she was worthy of stalking before. Haha. She'd have to rub that in Cas' face when she saw him again. He may have girls falling head over heels for him, but she was worthy of stalking. She wiped a tear from her eye and said, "Wow, that's a first. I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult." She shrugged at his offer. She wasn't too worried if truth be told. True, she still had no idea what she was going to do with her life, but she was pretty sure it wouldn't revolve around charms. Still it'd be nice if she actually passed the class... "I mean if you want. Lord knows I need all the help I can get." Well at least the second attempt at a handshake had not resulted in Darcy realizing that girls had hands too. They really were making great progress together. Maybe she should be a...nerd fixer (?) for a living. |
