I'm duplicating what I already posted in the uwfdiscussion Yahoo! Group but... no one ever said I wasn't the master of spam, huh? So I don't believe that anyone really wants to read about a WWE House Show up here in the frigid hinterlands of Ottawa, Canadiania but... this little event marked a major historical turning point as I got to meet both Steve (Daniels/Annis) and Mike (the Beebster himself) in person. They ran away screaming in horror at the sight of my ugly mug so I thought I'd post the following for anyone's amusement. One general comment... I'm a bit of a workrate mark so I was pleasantly surprised that most of the workers didn't phone it in despite this being little more than a house show pitstop en route to the RAW show tonight in Montreal. I was also impressed with how well most of the workers interacted with the live crowd. I think there's a distinct difference between playing to the camera and playing to the audience. Almost everyone who wrestled on this card seemed to have a good handle on that as most of the wrestler-fan interplay was excellent and helped improve the heat being generated. On to the matches... 1. Hurricane & Rosey (w/ Super Stacey) d. Generic Heel Tag Team via pinfall (ummm, I forget) My buddy and I had great seats as were in the second row on the side of the ring opposite the entrance aisle. Dodging the spittle and sweat was a little tricky but we had some great views as demonstrated by this little tag team title defence. I didn't recognize the challengers although one of the guys bore an amazing resemblance to Dick Murdoch (I'm dating myself by knowing who that is). The teenager sitting next to me said he used to be "that crazy guy from TNA" but I still didn't know who it was. Stacey stood with her back to us and... uhhh... ummm... sorry, was there a match? I got distracted. :-) 2. Chris Masters d. René Dupree via submission (Masterlock) A very surreal little match for a number of reasons. Maybe it's still a holdover from the old separatist debate but René got major heel heat despite a rather large segment of the audience being Francophone. It was strange hearing the kids from Quebec beside me screaming "Retournez-vous au France, René!" at the guy. The effect of this was that Chris Masters ended up getting... face heat! Now I'll admit that I've been tainted by Rick Scaia's constant Onsline Onslaught rants against Masters as I didn't think much of him. But he actually worked a lot harder for this house show than he seems to have done for any of the TV stints I've seen. Still pretty basic moves but he busted out some crisp suplexes so I was quite surprised. Canadianian audiences are bizarre, however, as I'm sure we'll see on tonight's RAW. 3. Rob Conway d. Viscera via pinfall (rope-assisted rollup) Match gets off to a shaky start when one of the RAW Diva contestants comes out to announce Big Vis but... forgets his name and has to have the regular announcer remind her. Ditz! Vis comes out accompanied by a horde of women that I think were Ottawa Renegade (our local CFL affiliate) cheerleaders. Conway did a decent job working the crowd with cheap heel heat but I had a hard time getting past one of Vis' signature moves being his humping of another male wrestler. Just a disturbing sight to see in person. *shudder* 4. Generic Prettyboy Face Team d. The Highlanders via pinfall (ummm, I forget) This tag match featured guys we haven't seen on TV but Mike and Steve told me that they'd seen The Highlanders before at an indy show in Oshawa. Textbook match that killed some of the crowd heat which is a shame because up close, the Highlander's constant patter in fake Scottish brogues was hilarious! My favorite line of the night: "Och, Angus! There's only two of `em!" Steve and I will be armwrestling later to see which one of us gets to rip off the Scottish tag team gimmick first. :-) 5. Carlito Cool d. Shelton Benjamin via pinfall (countered a missed Stinger Splash) Match of the night, IMNSHO. Carlito ranks right up there as one of the best wrestlers to work the crowd that night. He pulled the: "Ask the ugly white chick!" routine a couple of times following near-falls and his interaction with the crowd was spot-on and hilarious. He was especially adept at turning any possible face heat he might have gotten against himself by resorting to being a dickish heel whenever necessary. Benjamin, of course, brought the workrate and I was amazed at just how smoothly he transitions from one move to the next. Truly a world-class athlete as he busted his buns to make a simple house show match into something special. Definitely the hardest worker of the night. The Highlight Reel f. Chris Jericho & Trish Stratus There was no set but Mr. Jericho quickly demonstrated that he is the master of the microphone. And he went with the flow of the crowd as despite the fact that there were numerous Cena signs in the audience, the bulk of the fans were solidly behind Y2J. Maybe it's the Canadianian factor again, who knows. Trish came out to a big pop at first, simply to acknowledge her "return". But she went straight to the heel shtick right away and did a great job working with Jericho portraying herself as the arrogant beeyotch while he quickly earned the crowd's sympathy. A slap to the face earned his ire, however, and he tried to apply the Walls Of Jericho on her only to segue quickly into... 6. Chris Jericho d. Gene Snitsky via submission (Walls Of Jericho) Snitsky runs out to save Trish and attack Jericho. Huh??? My head exploded from trying to rationalize the various Trish/Lita/Snitsky storylines but I gave up after a while. Again, Snitsky seemed to work harder at this house show than I've seen him on TV but perhaps this was the proximity factor. Fairly straightforward match with the highlight being a comedy spot when Trish tried to interfere only to get a spanking from Jericho. I promptly forgot that there was a match going on while watching the lovely Ms. Stratus' derriere getting spanked. Ummm... Jericho won. I think. 8-b 7. Kurt Angle d. Eugene via submission (Ankle Lock) I was getting a little offended by the kids beside me taunting Eugene with chants of "You're a retard!" This might have had something to do with my friend who was with me and is mildly developmentally delayed or as most who know me can testify, I do tend towards excessive political correctness from time to time. Despite that, Angle demonstrated that he's a master showman as everything he did was perfect. From the way he played the crowd to the way he worked the match, it was absolutely flawless. Methinks the man has evolved from Olympic-caliber athlete into a perfect professional wrestling performer. Awesome to see. Eugene was fun to watch especially by hitting classic trademark moves like the Rock Bottom and a Stunner. But for some reason, despite the talent of the participants, this one seemed a little flat to me. And finally onto our main event... 8. Big Show d. Edge via pinfall (Chokeslam) As impressed as I was by how all of the workers performed, none impressed me more than The Big Show. He easily got one of the biggest pops of the night and up close, he is incredibly enormous. To go along with his size, he is also extremely charismatic and funny. I think that he was out there having fun, knowing that with the cameras off that he could allow more of his humor to shine through. Edge played his foil to perfection including a very funny shtick where Big Show pantomimed that Edge's metrosexuality might mask something more. Edge indignantly protested and insisted that his "straightness" was without question leading to some hilarious exchanges between the two. From there, the two worked a nice big man vs. smaller man match where Edge had to rely on illegal shenanigans to gain any advantage. Big Show's no-selling at points was hilarious (and not obnoxious) as he used it to play into the comedic elements of the match. Some good spots from both and Show gets the duke after he blocked a briefcase shot and scored the chokeslam. All in all, a fun night only improved by the fact that I got to suck up to our esteemed fedhead in person... errr, did I say that last bit out loud? Check out some (bad) pictures I took which have been uploaded to the uwfdiscussion Yahoo! Groups web site. Click on Photo Albums > Wrestling Related pics > WWE House Show Report - 8-14-2005. There's also an image of Steve, Mike and myself online at... Los Trios Horriblés I'm the bald one. :-) Cheers! Patrickus Lurkus |
