Tokuyama Sports Center, Tokuyama Saturday, January 21 2500 Fans - Full House - The crowd was buzzing as Billy Thomas came to the ring to announce exactly who would be challenging Usagi Yoshida in a week's time at Tokyo Differ Ariake. Thomas said the competition for the title shot had been fierce, and the decision had not been an easy one. He said he had been particularly impressed with one young man on the current tour, so the title shot was going to... Tate Monroe. This was met with an "ooohhhh", the fans surprised that a touring gaijin was getting the shot, but then they broke into applause. Match One: Hasselhoff SE [9'21" Hoffanator] Uchu Koujin Red - What should have been a hot opener was in reality quite slow and lethargic, as these two young wrestlers showed that they've got a lot of work to do before they move up the ladder. Surprisingly, there was little comedy involved, although Hasselhoff SE kept the fans entertained with some of his usual antics. He was too strong for Uchu, finishing him off with a new move he calls the Hoffanator (an inverted facelock lift into a stunner). Match Two: Norihiko Miura [7'44" Samsara] British Steel - The wrestling monk made easy work of the mullet-wigged metaller, taking him apart with a barrage of strikes (including a shotei palm strike that hit with such force that Steel was left with blood pouring from his nose) and throws (like a brutal release German suplex), finishing him off with his praying motion into a southern-style piledriver, before getting the tapout via a reverse Indian Deathlock with a bridged chinlock (Muta Lock), which Miura calls Samsara. Match Three: Shoji Tamura{x} & Jeff Kujawa[Free] [11'54" Bodyscissor double wristlock] Kotaro Shimita{o} & Tornado JINTEI. - Before the match, Tamura got on the microphone and cut a scathing promo against Billy Thomas and his decision to give Tate Monroe the title shot. Tamura was visibly angry, and said he would _destroy_ everyone put in his path, to show Thomas that his decision was a mistake. Then he set about putting his words into action, as he and Kujawa put on a particularly _brutal_ display against the popular young high flyers, Shimita and JINTEI. Tamura's anger seemed to override his usual focus - instead of looking for ways to win, he was intent on unleashing as much damage on his opponents as possible. Like when a pinfall opportunity presented itself, but he would drag the opponent up and throw them into the corner so he could unleash more hard kicks. Against a more experienced opponent this might have been costly, but Shimita and JINTEI were no match for two athletes the caliber of Tamura and Kujawa - Tamura finally deciding to go for the win by clamping a double wristlock with body scissors on a badly hurt Shimita, who quickly tapped out. Match Four - Trinity X Championship: Darkness Kitty!{x}, Nobutaka Takase & Super Orange Panda [13'47" DK Suplex] El Hijo del Super Macho [ILL], Kurogama{o} & Crazy Bastard Cop (1st Defence) - The team of Kitty!, Takase and Panda were introduced as "Rebels Without A Pulse", which seems to be their new team name. Defending the Trinity X title for the first time, they faced another trio of masked man in luchador EHdSM, the bear-masked Kurogama and everyone's favourite insane lawman, CBC. This match was an insane spotfest, which really brought the fans to life. Highlights included: Kitty! hitting his kip up side Russian legsweep on Kurogama; the Rebels hitting simultaneous suicide dives onto their opponents outside the ring; Panda and CBC continuing their comedy-based rivalry, with Panda doing his "Panda sleepy" routine and CBC chasing him around with his hammer while yelling "Sumasshu"; and EHdSM and Kitty! engaging in a series of fast-paced lucha-style armdrags and wacky submission holds. The fans almost witnessed an upset, when EHdSM moved out of the way of Takase's Saihyousen (running high knee to the lungs), causing Takase to hit the corner, then rolled the zombie-masked one up with a majistral cradle, getting a _very_ close count. After a lightning-fast series of nearfalls, Kitty! hit Kurogama with his half-tiger, half-leg clutch suplex, the Darkness Kitty! Suplex, getting the 3-count. Match Five - Main Event: Usagi Yoshida{x} & Griffin James [12'08" Hide My Face] Eric Dane[NEXT]{o} & Tate Monroe[HVW] - This match was given added intrigue after Billy Thomas' announcement earlier in the night that Monroe and Yoshida would face off for the Independent Super Lightweight title in a week's time at Tokyo Differ Ariake. James and Dane opened the match, with Monroe tagging in and out with Dane during the opening minutes, before Yoshida tagged in for the first time, and the fans were giddy with anticipation of a preview of the title match. Yoshida and Monroe took it to the mat, wrestling a series of holds and counters that saw the two fine technical wrestlers reach a stalemate. At that point Monroe gave a respectful nod towards Yoshida, who smiled and blew a bubble in his bubblegum, to loud applause. Dane broke the moment though, tagging himself in, much to Monroe's chagrin. Dane earned the crowd's ire by hitting Yoshida with a cheapshot out of a clean break, and then overpowering the Pink Spider. Yoshida soon came back though, taking Dane with his always-impressive multiple-revolution corbata, then an elbowdrop onto the American's butt! As Dane complained to the referee, Yoshida tagged in James, who took Dane down with a series of elbowshots, then almost finished him with a fisherman suplex. Later in the match, Yoshida and Monroe again faced off, but their battle was brief, before it all broke down, and all four men got involved. Monroe was sent from the ring, and James set up for a dive, but was cut off by Monroe, who tripped him up, dragged him from the ring and sent the James clan member crashing into the ringpost. Dane then climbed onto the apron and springboarded in... right into a Yoshida superkick! Dane was dazed, and Yoshida took him down with snapmare, quickly transitioning into a front guillotine choke, applying a half straitjacket hold to complete the Hide Your Face submission hold. Dane tried to fight to make the ropes, but had no choice but to tap out. Afterwards, Monroe again showed his distaste for his teammate, this time kneeling right on his chest and yelling in the NEXT wrestler's face. Then he returned to his feet and walked over to Yoshida, engaging in a staredown. Well, it would have been a staredown had Yoshida not started to grin, and then blown a big bubblegum bubble. Monroe wasn't amused, shaking his head as he walked away, and the fans began a "YO-SHI-DA!" chant. Overall comments: Following Billy Thomas' announcement, and the few moments of Yoshida-Monroe action in the main event, there is plenty of anticipation for the upcoming title fight. Tate Monroe has been very impressive on the tour so far, his mat-based technical wrestling style going over well with the wrestling purists. It will offer a nice counter-balance for Yoshida's more fun-loving in-ring style, although don't be fooled - the champ is a former standout amateur wrestler himself, and can wrestle with the best of them. Tomorrow night's main event in Hiroshima has already been announced as Monroe, Dane and El Hijo del Super Macho taking on Yoshida, James and Crazy Bastard Cop, so we won't have to wait long for another taste of Yoshida-Monroe. The Trinity X championship will also be on the line for the second night in a row, as the Rebels Without a Pulse face a strong challenge from the new faction of Tamura, Kujawa and Kaijin. © Dream Fujin, 2006.
