News Central Saturday May 20, 2006 ====================== # Dream Fujin officials caught up with Griffin James earlier this week, and here's what the champion had to say: On the current tour: "This tour has been damn exciting. I got to wrestle in a new environment, and hopefully I represented Dream Fujin in a way that made the fans proud of us and what we do. Even though I had fun out there, there's been a nagging feeling in the back of my head- I _have_ to get back to basics, and it starts with Monroe at the Super Energy Battle TV taping. I need this match more than _he_ needs it, which is something that no one understands but me." His thoughts about his title reign up to this point: "At the end of the day, I am a champion, plain and simple. That ring is my ring- and that's something people don't want to hear. My responsiblity covers two areas- to give the best performance possible and to represent Dream Fujin to the fullest. There have been missteps along the way, and I'll be the first to acknowledge them... but when it comes down to it, I owe this company my best in that ring. Nothing else will satisfy me... and I hope that nothing else will satisfy Billy Thomas as well. Let's face it, I'm not looking to be some fly-by-night transitional champion- I want this to last until the stars turn cold and I can't go anymore. That's how much my title means to me- it makes me strive to be a better wrestler not only for myself, but for the company as well, and I'm going to prove that when I face Tate Monroe." On Tate Monroe: "The big thing between me and Tate Monroe is... I know we're not in America anymore, and he doesn't. He treats Dream Fujin like it's a territory down South- before I continue, I'm _not_ knocking the guy even though he's going to take it that way. But, he wants it to be _his time now_. He wants the ball, he wants to run, and I'm the guy that's keeping him from doing that. No matter how many accolades he gets other than the big one, he's gonna be bitter and pissed and he _just won't get it_. This isn't about him. It's not about me either. It's about two things: _honor and respect_... and not for us, but for Dream Fujin. I'm going to fight for that until I can't anymore... and once and for all, let me say this. It isn't personal between me and Monroe... at least on my end. Yeah, I kicked him in the face, but as I've said that was an accident. No one believes me, but hey... that's life. I can't speak for him concerning that and I refuse to do so, but for me... this isn't personal. This is business, plain and simple. Dream Fujin business. I've got no choice but to represent. And I will." On Ryoji Mifune: "I'll see Mifune in the ring. Again. Until then, he can shut the fuck up, 'cuz I don't speak 'threatese' too well. He tapped, so he's gotta deal. That's all I gotta say about that." On the future: "This is the greatest promotion in the world, and I'm here to stay. Nuff said." # Less than twenty-four hours before the biggest match of his young career to date, Tate Monroe appeared in confident mood as he took some brief time away from his training to speak to the Japanese and Mexican press about his upcoming Independent Super-Lightweight Title match against the reigning champion, Griffin James. “Confident? Of course. Confidence is born from preparation and focus, neither of which I will ever be accused of lacking. I’ve been waiting for this match, for this opportunity, for four months now. Two whole tours. I’ve laid awake at night, playing it over in my head a thousand times, accounting for every factor, planning for every eventuality. I’ve watched more tape of Griffin James than he probably even knew existed. And thanks to all of that, I feel I’m better prepared and more focused for this one match than for any other in my career. So personally I’d say I’ve every right to be confident.” - But surely Griffin James, never one to be short of confidence himself, had also earned that right? “The difference is that my confidence comes from knowledge and belief, whereas his I believe, certainly at this point, is little more than a façade. A projection of strength to hide the fact that he’s wilting under the pressure. Just look at the evidence -- how else would you account for the series of pinfalls he’s suffered on this tour? How else would you explain the attacks he’s made on me, both verbally and in the ring, even when he’s supposed to be my partner. He’s shaken, I totally believe that. He looks at me, and the challenge I provide, and he knows it won’t be like last tour. He knows I’m not some immature teen who couldn’t live up to the pressure of a title shot he never should have had. He looks at me, and I think he’s afraid of what he sees, because he’s afraid of being proven second best.” - When one reporter commented that the unfamiliar nature of the lucha libra style as much as anything else may have accounted for this apparent slip in form for Griffin James, also noting that Monroe himself had recently suffered a pinfall of his own, the number one contender was dismissive: “One pinfall in two tours is a statistical anomaly, nothing more. Especially when it comes in a match that, I’ll remind you, I won. Three in almost as many matches on the other hand is a trend, one that if you’re Griffin James then I’d tend to suggest is a rather disturbing one.” - And finally, considering the fact that both men are firm favorites of the Dream Fujin crowds, and greatly respected competitors, did he think that once this match was over, and their rivalry settled, he and James would be able to put their animosity aside and perhaps even extend that same respect to one another? “I’ve made no secret of the fact I don’t like Griffin James, and I feel there’s little if any common ground that lies between us. He may be a proven competitor, I certainly won’t deny that, but to me he exhibits many of the negative traits that give American wrestling its bad name. So to answer your question, that’s not something I can promise, and I think that lies in Griffin James’ hands at least as much as my own. In fact, the only thing I’ll promise for tomorrow’s match... is victory.” # Speaking after the latest Dream Fujin show at the Arena Mexico, Elvis Sunday was a mixture of emotions. "I'm delighted to have made it to so far in the Battle Royal and, to have earned the slot on Team 2 in the Torneo. To be honest though, I've got bad taste in my mouth because of that fleabitten bastardino [Dream Fujin's Darkness Kitty!]. It's not often I get involved in bad feeling, in fact, this might be the first time but if he tries to mess with this furball, he won't find me so easy to get rid of. Oh and, good luck Tate!" # With the teams set for the Torneo Cibernetico, most people believed that there would be nothing significant happening between the end of the first Arena Mexico show and the beginning of the second. But then Tatsumi Nanami showed up seconds after his son was eliminated in the battle royale. Interviewers quickly flooded him with questions. On how he got into the country even with the visa issues: "Money talks." On his son's performance in Mexico: "Yoshino got off to a rough start, but he has proven that the fighting spirit is alive with the Nanami name. He held on until the very end in the battle royale, and earned himself a spot on the top team in the Torneo Cibernetico. Tomorrow night, he will prove himself to be the young gun of Dream Fujin by earning the Independent Super-Lightweight title shot." On whether he would be at ringside tomorrow night for the Torneo: "If the officials allow it, I will of course be there. I would not miss Yoshino's 'coming out' party for anything." © Dream Fujin, 2006. |
