News Central Sunday June 18, 2006 ==================== # Following his shocking betrayal of Griffin James in the main event on June 17, Usagi Yoshida met with the press, joined by new stablemates Ryoji Mifune and Kamen Kanoji, who were demanding answers from the former Independent Super Lightweight champion. Needless to say, they got them. Below is the unedited transcript of the interview. REPORTER: Why, Usagi? Why did you do that to Griffin James? YOSHIDA: I knew that question was going to come. How could I have done that to such a wonderful man, huh? How could I have betrayed Griffin James in his time of need? Well, it's pretty simple... when I broke my ankle, you know how I found out about how I was stripped of my title? REPORTER: Well, we assumed that you were called and notified... YOSHIDA: Yeah, I was, but it damn sure wasn't by this company. I was recovering from surgery on my ankle... I would've been back in six weeks. Six weeks was all I needed to recover from the surgery. Someone told Billy Thomas four months, but come on... I'm a wrestler, and a damn tough one at that. It wasn't long, but as I was recovering in my apartment, my phone suddenly started ringing every few seconds... "what happened in Dream Fujin? Why'd they take away the title?" So many frenetic calls, but so little details... and then I remembered something. When I broke my ankle, I asked for one of the referees to get my stuff and bring it back to my apartment for me, since we live on the same block... and when I checked my stuff, after getting all those calls, I noticed my belt wasn't in my bag. REPORTER: What does that have to do with Griffin James? YOSHIDA: What do _you_ think? Who's the man I beat in the decision match for the title? REPORTER: Griffin James... YOSHIDA: Exactly. You think it didn't eat him alive that he wasn't the champion? Deep down inside, he wanted another rematch, and me breaking my ankle didn't just open the window of opportunity for him, it smashed the damn thing out with a brick. So I believe he went to Billy Thomas and fed him a line of shit about how I wasn't going to be back for four months and I should give up the title. They just took the belt from me as a precaution. Sure enough, I find out that some doctor went on TV with Billy Thomas and says "oh, he's going to be out four months!" It wasn't even my damn doctor that went with him! REPORTER: So you're claiming that it was a conspiracy to get the belt off you? YOSHIDA: Well, I'm the top Japanese talent in this place, it's run by Americans, and the belt has only been with Americans since it was stolen from me. Hmmm. REPORTER: But why did you sacrifice your friendship with Griffin, knowing what he's been through lately? YOSHIDA: I don't care. I got myself in great shape, and my buddy Ryoji Mifune got me prepared for my return. He set James up like a bowling pin and I knocked him down. That's what's known as teamwork. Kamen Kanoji just added a nice distraction to make all you idiots think I was here to be come kind of joke. REPORTER: Why are you so bitter? YOSHIDA: Because this place turned me into a joke. This place turned me into some sort of bubble-blowing, baby-hugging, butt-kissing geek. Sure, it's great to be popular, but at what cost to my morals? If there's fans that want to support me now, at least I know they like me for what I really am, not because of what's mass-marketed down their throats. REPORTER: What do you think of Tate Monroe, the current champion? YOSHIDA: He sucks. [There is an uncomfortable silence.] REPORTER: Would you care to explain that statement? YOSHIDA: What's to explain? Here's some guy that came into this place looking to smooch as much butt as possible. He sucked up to Japanese fans by giving himself a Japanese nickname, and some of them, either blinded by smooth talking or impressed that this dick looked up some words in his traveller's dictionary, went along with him. We saw the true fabric of his character, didn't we? And as far as I'm concerned, he's nothing more than some cheap joke that's keeping my belt warm for me... well, about as warm as someone with no soul or heart can be. REPORTER: How about the upcoming three-way match for the title? YOSHIDA: What a joke that is. Three Americans competing for a Japanese title in an unconventional match. It's a disgrace to professional wrestling that a title can be contested in a match with three competitors. This promotion would be ashamed of itself, if it had any shame. REPORTER: Aren't you worried that your words may lead to disciplinary actions? YOSHIDA: Ooh, what will they do, fire me? On what grounds, for telling the truth? That's a stupid reason to lose a job. REPORTER: Ryoji Mifune, how do you feel about all of this? MIFUNE: Obviously, I agree with everything Usagi says. Why else would I be on his side? REPORTER: And you, Kamen Kanoji? KANOJI: Hey, what happened to that lady reporter Namiko Inoue? Why isn't she here? I had this box of chocolates and everything... YOSHIDA: Enough! This interview's over. Go bother someone else. # Griffin James released this statement sometime after the show on June 17th when he was turned on by Usagi Yoshida: "I'm not gonna sit here and make excuses- I didn't when Monroe beat me for the title, and I'm not gonna do it now. If there's one thing _everyone_ should know by now, it's that _I don't quit_. It's been like that since day one here in Dream Fujin- not because of my "ego" and not because I'm looking to have the spotlight on me. It's who I _am_. It's in my blood- I did not come here to be a fly on the wall, and I didn't come here to lose, and I damn sure didn't come here to amount to bag full of shit. I came here to _finally_ belong in this industry. To make something of myself, and along the way? People have had a serious problem with that... and it's been happening since my first match Genji Gempachi. Shoji Tamura. Tate Monroe... and now? Usagi Yoshida. To quote James Hetfield... "so _fucking_ what?" When it's all said and done, my Dream Fujin career's _not_ gonna end due to me getting hit with a clacker and losing a title by some hack- and it damn sure won't end by getting beat up by a couple of delinquent punks looking to get some cheap heat. I'm _not_ going anywhere no matter what. So now, let's go back to the basics... everything I do is for one thing and one thing only: _Fujingun_. Everyone else may have moved on and I might be by myself, but there _will_ be a revival and there will be a reckoning, and most importantly? _Revenge_." # Dream Fujin has also released a few new promotional items for Griffin James, such as t-shirts and a new logo for the popular former champ- a black gloved fist raised toward the viewer with "WAR" spread out across the knuckles in stylized white lettering. Rumor has it that with the current state of Dream Fujin, this is the long-rumored gimmick overhaul that had been in the works for a while now. Oddly enough, they've also copyrighted some new terms such as "A Better Tomorrow", (which might be a new tag team, sources say) and oddly enough, "Fujingun Zero"... the latter of which fitting in if Griffin James is the original Fujingun member left to stand by the cause. # Dream Fujin reporters recently had their first opportunity to catch up with newcomer Party Animal Delta after his tag team loss to Darkness Kitty! & Ice Dragon at the Esashi Town Center Gymnasium. Although he seemed like he would rather be doing anything that talking, he did acknowledge a question from reporters about his recent lack of success in the company. "Losses? Losses? Is that what you call them? I think of them more as a series of learning experiences. Painful learning experiences .. but learning experiences none-the-less. Since I was first tossed in the ring with HERO Ishikawa back on the Mexico tour, Dream Fujin has done me a great honor by matching me up with people like Darkness Kitty! People like Ryoji Mifune. People that have been around the block in this business. And people that can teach me a thing or two about how to become a better performer. So you call them losses, and I'll call them a gift from Billy Thomas, Kazushima Yakamotu and anybody else that has had any type of power in this company." Pressing the issue a little further, the reporters questioned as to when we could see a possible turn-around in his luck. However PAD didn't seem very pleased with the question. "This isn't about luck. This is about me growing as a wrestler. Anybody that has watched what I do in the ring cannot deny that I have tried to give 100% each and every time I have stepped inside the ropes. Anybody that has paid close attention to me will note that I am trying with every fiber in my body to embody that fighting spirit that the fans of Dream Fujin truly appreciate. I'm going to be honest with you. I spent the early portion of my career lacing my boots up in the United States. Then I do a short tour of Mexico, And now finally I have arrived in the one place where I feel I can become the best competitor that I can be, Japan. It's been a complete hodge-podge of styles, and I am glad I am going to be able to fully direct my attention towards one particular one now." When asked what he has been doing since he made the trek over to the Land of the Rising Son, the mood seemed to lighten a bit. "Sleeping. The time difference'll definitely f' with you. And it may seem like I am being lacsidasical by doing so, but right now I have to ensure that I am properly rested. Without that, I'm never going to be able to put on the displays that these people want and deserve. When I'm not sleeping though, I have been doing a bit of ring work with my temporary roomie, Yoshino Nanami and his old man. They are really doing everything in their power to steer me in the right direction and for that I am eternally grateful. Not to mention that Nanami could have picked anybody to be his partner in the Trinity X Contenders Match and he chose me. It was truly a humbling experience, and while I have said it countless times to him in private - I am sorry for blowing that great opportunity and counting the lights." Finally PAD was asked about any short term goals for his career in Dream Fujin, besides growing as a wrestler. "Absolutely I have a short term goal. Score a win over 666. Right now, not only to they appear to be the "hot shit" in this company .. but I am 0-2 against them in this tour, and I was bested by Darkness Kitty! on at least one occasion back in Mexico. I feel that a victory against them, in any way shape or form that it may come, will prove that all the bumps and bruises were not for naught. So yeah, anytime of those guys has a free night .. I would _love_ to lock horns with them again." Overall, PAD appeared to be taking his record in Dream Fujin in stride and just looking forward. And for a relative newcomer to the company, that's all that you can really ask. # Youngster Ketsu Tonaga appeared extremely despondent backstage after losing the second match of his trial series on Saturday, leaving him 0-2 in his quest to earn a Dream Fujin contract. "I had my chance this time, and I let it slip through my fingers. Now my back is to the wall and I must beat Panda on Wednesday or all is lost. At least I have three days to train and to study where I went wrong, because I cannot... I will not let myself face the embarassment of three straight defeats. I have dug myself into a hole tonight and it will be very tough to escape, but even if I am to lose this series then I will go out fighting until the bitter end." © Dream Fujin, 2006. |
