This may have been one of the darkest and disturbed cards I've ever read. And I LOVED it. The next show will NOT be pretty.

OH... MY... GOD!!! First off, there will be SPOILERS in this post so stop reading this and read the show before you read on! I'll give space! S P O I L E R S P A C E Ok.. DAMN! What a KICK ASS HOUR TWO! Trey DaMann has LEUKEMIA?!! Ravioli and Spaghetti-o's! That BOWLED me over! It literally stopped me and seemed to make time pause. I think partly because memories of Charles and his leukemia and made me think about how he would talk about in his Silent Killer RP's in the WWA, I can't lie it had a bearing on why this segment affected me alot. But it was a super dramatic and unexpected turn in it's own right. What a finish to the show!! The matches, my god! Epstein-Vasquez was intense as all heck! Davis vs Nina told a GREAT story and I marked like a KID for the finish and result! (Was HOPING Davis would win at the last PPV) Martin vs Kauffman was all kinds of fun and the post-match stuff made really want to see a tag match badly between Martin/Martinez vs Kauffman/Whitecross. That tag match would rock all kinds of awesome! Great matches all the way around! Lots of great promos and that end DaMann segment, just DAMN! The match ups lined up for the next show are just insane! UWF is amazing right now! Awesome! UWF ROCKS! Hour Two Lists: Top 3 Favorite Matches: 01-Nina Grimsson vs Laura Davis 02-Alex Epstein vs Juan Vasquez 03-Derek Martin vs Dan Kauffman Top 3 Favorite Promos: 01-Trey DaMann 02-Gamma Ray & Tommy Elliott 03-Tumaffi Top 2 Moments: 01-Trey DaMann has.. LEUKEMIA?!! 02-LAURA DAVIS WINS THE WOMEN'S TITLE! YES! |

This will be an even greater crisis of conscience coming up for Vasquez! Does he destroy the dream of a dying man and truly become pond scum by beating mercilessly on a cancer victim? Or does he find that lingering flicker of compassion left in his soul?

I would imagine Martinez would complain there's too much pepper, Vasquez would say it's not spicy enough and TUMAFFI DEMANDS MEAT ON THE BONES AND THERE IS ONLY A SLIVER OF MEAT THAT DOES NOT CONSTITUTE SATISYFING TUMAFFI'S DIETARY NEEDS! THAT IS ALL! |

Leukemia as an e-w angle, huh? As someone who has run more than my fair share of distasteful angles over the years [Juvy's dad's heart attack, the Veronica Temple miscarriage, etc.] I have to admit I always winced a bit when running them. I always felt they were a little too close to reality for something that was supposed to be fun. Sometimes they were very effective but I could never decide if they really should've been done. Eh... I don't know. Maybe I'm just taking this one badly since it hits a little too close to home. |

I do apologize to anyone who feels that the storyline is in poor taste or hits a little too close to home. Not that it's an attempt at an excuse, but a bit of an explanation as to how this angle came about. When I made the decision to leave e-w the first time (back in 1998), the way I wrote out my main character, Derrick DaMann, was to have him become sick as a result of leukemia. Yes, it was probably just in questionable taste then as it is now. I probably could have, and should have, come up with better. But when it became time to leave again, I went about figuring out the best way to write out my current main character, Trey DaMann (Derrick's son). In the storyline, Trey has always emulated his father. He has wanted to be just like his father for everything, but not doing so at nearly the same level. That provided me with the opportunity for a storyline that I felt was too good to turn down. Trey finally gets to be just like his father, but in the one way that he did not want. I'm no Literature major, but that's pretty tragic, right? (It's why the Martinez-DaMann feud was very much based around Trey's father and his feelings about him and how he passed away. The now-infamous "crying in the cemetary" flash was Trey's realization that he was likely going to have the exact same fate as his father and trying to find some way to make sense of it.) Without jumping ahead too much and giving away too many spoilers, this storyline also gives me the opportunity to explore Trey's maturation process as a result of what is happening. The character's original incarnation was to be Paris Hilton in a wrestling ring, focused only on having parties, driving fast cars, doing drugs, and screwing lots of women. He only wanted the World title as a way to do even more of the same. His viewpoint is changing now, as he sees winning the belt as an accomplishment in its own right, a bit of immortality, and a way of earning respect from his peers. Changes are being made in his personal life too, as he is finally focusing on his health, making strides towards emotional acceptance, and establishing meaningful friendships. I'm toying with the idea of him exploring and making peace with his never-before-mentioned maternal side of his family, but it depends on how much time is left for him. I also wanted the opportunity to develop Trey into something worth admiring during this storyline. I hope that I'll be able to appropriately convey the character's tremendous courage and determination during his final push for the title. A few years back, I interned with someone who had just been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. He had routine chemo and radiation treatments, crudely drew in his missing eyebrows with makeup pencil, didn't complain about anything, and still did everything that I did day in and day out. I wish I could describe in words the lessons he taught me without even saying a word of his own. I'm going to try to do it through Trey. Yes, this storyline will hit a little too close to home for me too. That's why I decided to write it as my final swan song. I just hope I have the skills to write it in a way that communicates the respect, emotion, and gravity it deserves. -Jay |

I'm really digging Gamma Ray right now. That IOU World title and the accusations of "doping" toward Tommy Elliot and his caffeine were some inspired stuff. Props be to you! |

I don't think the leukemia is in poor taste. At least, not the way it's been presented so far. At the end of February, my father was operated for his prostate cancer (all went well), and, for now, he only has to deal with hi skin cancer that stubbornly always comes back. Though neither require chemo, the latter does require his face to be burned off every once in a while (ok, just twice). As we see our sick friends/family members trudging on, we, the healthy ones, always think they're courageous. They always think they're doing what they gotta do, and that courage has nothing to do with it. No one ever thinks of themselves as being courageous, I guess.
As for Gamma Ray... It's the Universal IOU Championship of the World, thank you very much. And no, that's not redundant. If GR was in the MBC, I assume it'd be called the Mighty IOU Championship of Bastardom. Maybe not. It was always the plan from the get go to have GR accuse TE of doping. Except initially, I thought it'd just be ludicrous accusation. When I discovered that caffeine had been scientifically established as an endurance enhancing stimulant in the 70s, I was stunned. The list of benefits/side effects is really quite long. It wasn't until we were writing the last flash that I learned caffeine consumption is legitimately controlled by the IOC. You can get a doping ban due to caffeine intake. 'Course, everything is a substance monitored or banned by the IOC, but still... I was surprised. You know... at least, I learned stuff! |
