*Crosses fingers for Tommy Stephens repelling down from the roof during the Gamma Ray/Elliot match and stealing the title shot by involving himself in a match he wasn't supposed to be in Mike Justice-style, before cashing it in at the end of the main event*

:please:    :noseehearspeak:   :woot:

Well, at least it's known as Mike Justice-style and not Serge Annis-style. Bishop got screwed in '97, I'll say it.

He wasn't the only one... :)

So I see THAT wound hasn't healed yet either. Meh, Reed's long since retired. It's not like he's coming back.

You people befuddle me.

Alright, quick history lesson (and no, I DON'T know who has the longest undefeated streak in UWF history)... spring of 1997 there was a pay per view that featured World Champion "Crimson" Joe Reed (in his heel anti-UWF days) defending against Bishop (babyface, the anti-Annis) in a ladder match if I'm not mistaken... although for some reason I'm picturing a cage involved somehow. At any rate, Serge Annis slid down the cable from the roof and grabbed the belt himself, and the referee on the spot declared HIM the winner and new champion. If I'm not mistaken the fallout included Annis' 2nd reign being stripped as well as stricken from the records, though I don't remember if Reed got the title back or it was declared vacant.

Although Sager got the last laugh a year later when Bishop won a rather large and complicated tournament to finally win the title... and to this day I don't think I've ever heard from him again.

That ref should've turned heel and gotten an angle as the UWF's evil heel ref who eventually gets beaten down by one of the women's wrestlers.

I can imagine this did not go down very well.

Bait & Switch-style title changes rarely do.
It's also a bit of a stretch of the imagination that a referee would be incompetent enough to make such a ruling, lol!

It's as if Eveline Eriksen was decreed new women's North American Champion based on her debut.

But, I get it. It's part of your e-w golden age that you nostalgically revere with rose-tinted selective memory. ;)

She wasn't!?

Bait and switch! Bait and switch!

And like I said earlier...it probably would've went down smoother if they got an angle for that ref afterward. Crooked refs are like a staple in cheap heat antics.

I agree with the ref thing for sure.
That would have gone over as well as Dibiase paying a guy to have plastic surgery so that he looks exactly like the legal referee... then get him to usurp the real ref's place and screw Hogan out of the title, OMG!
(When said like this... it's amazing that people bought that kayfabe!)

But corrupt refs always work. If MBC wasn't doing the RUTABEGA stuff, I'd be corrupting referees as we speak!

Believe it or not, there wasn't TOO MUCH complaining about it as I recall. Even so, Serge's reign definitely ended right there and some hasty rebooking resulted. I honestly don't remember where the title ended up though, but I'm fairly certain Joe Reed didn't get it back.

Wait a minute, that time frame makes me wonder if that was what led to the first ever Road To The Gold. CJR was still pro-AEWA by then so the interfed angle would have been ongoing... any other fossils want to help me out?

I have no idea and was still new to the internet at that point (you guys really ARE fossils) but I did hear from someone that the Road to the Gold started because of that snafu.

Well then see? Everybody DID win. And a brand new confusing-as-hell gimmick match was born.

You are to refer to Katie as "The Duchess of Der Basterdmusen" as of June 2014. She'll get angry if you don't. You've been warned.

He had years of people calling him "Surge Anus". I'm sure he's suffered enough already.

He tagged with Caliban. He deserves to suffer.
Moo.
