Emerald States Grand Prix Presents: "The Nor'Western Commemorative Tag Tournament" April 17-18 (Saturday & Sunday) 1976 Night One: Memorial Coliseum, Portland Oregon Attendance: 8,788 (near capacity; 9,000 tickets sold) The Evergreen States Grand Prix logo sparkles on the screen as it rushes front and center over the talking image of "The Voice of the Cascades" Francis Barrister and Bay Area Wrestling color commentator: Everett Terwilliger. A few pleasantries are exchanged and a run down of round one, with overlay, commences. Emerald Bracket 01. Dixie Irregulars - O 16. Yakima Nation Rising - X 05. Navy Jack and The Bowery Kid - X 12. El Magnifico & Eduardo Ramirez - O 03. The Black Knights - X 14. Red Alert - O 07. Tornado Honda and Mr. Crash- O 10. The Style Council - X Sky Blue Bracket 02. South Pacific Tidal Waves - O 15. Jack Britain and Bart Batterson - O Thus setting up these round two match ups: 01. Dixie Irregulars 05. El Magnifico & Eduardo Ramirez 14. Red Alert 07. Tornado Honda and Mr. Crash 02. South Pacific Tidal Waves 06. The Volunteers 04. Slick and Sleek 13. Jack Britain and Bart Batterson Commissioner Patrick Barker is in the center of the ring and he seems to have an important announcement in his hand. Barker explains that, after discussing things with the various owners, teams and commissioners, it has been decided that the quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals will be specialty matches. The quarterfinals are all best 2 out of 3 falls with the other two round specialty matches to be announced before each round. The audience is both stunned and pleased. A long round of applause for Commissioner Barker and a chant of "We Want Action" starts. The crowd is hot tonight and the tournament is happy to oblige. Barrister and Terwilliger are surprised and discuss the possibilities in a 2 out of 3 falls match up. The set up favors the better teams, as with one pinfall anything can happen. Terwillger predicts that the Volunteers are going to be smashed like grapes as the Tidal Waves outweigh them by "...like 80 tons," while Barrister is thinking this helps the Japanese team of Honda and Crash as they seem to have more stamina than most of the other teams. Barrister states there will be vignettes with each team before each match and afterwards we will be taken to the ring for the beginning of the second round matches in ernest. Vignette One: The Dixie Irregulars Alvie Blake (brown hair and wiry) was a successful singles wrestler who was thrown in a tag team thanks to a promotional event. His partner? Montgomery Hicks (black haired and wiry). Montgomery states the two were at odds for quite some time until the tag team of KING Cobb and Ted Johnstone came into Iowa and started trouble. Ever since then, the Irregulars have worked like clockwork, eventually winning a loser leave town match against KING Cobb & Johnstone. They entered the tournament to reunite after Montgomery had to spend time away from wrestling after a leg injury sustained in a motorcycle accident. The two wish the rest of the field luck but know they are the favorites to win it all, since they were Illustrated Wrestling Weekly's #1 tag team three years running. Vignette Two: El Magnifico & Eduardo Ramirez The popular duo of El Magnifico and Eduardo Ramirez have stoked imaginations all across Mexico and Texas. El Magnifico is known not only for his wrestling prowess, but also his movies. When he is not fighting vampires and space ghosts, El Magnifico is a top star in el Associacion Nacional de Lucha Libre. Always a danger to win a championship, El Magnifico has decided to tag with popular Eduardo Ramirez to show what the free fight really means. Eduardo Ramirez is a happy-go-lucky sort, who gained even more popularity after he lost his mask in a match. Ramirez offers more of the faster pace of lucha libre, a contrast to the methodical El Magnifico. The two hope to dazzle American audiences and bring home the cup to Mexico. The two shout VIVA MEXICO! as the vignette ends. ROUND TWO, MATCH ONE: #1 The Dixie Irregulars (Alvie Blake & Montgomery Hicks) vs. #5 El Magnifico & Eduardo Ramirez The Irregulars and Magnifico/Ramirez shake hands at the start of the match. Blake and Ramirez are the two legal men and they step on the gas immediately. Bouncing off ropes the two deliver arm drags, snap mares, trips and other take downs to the audience's delight. The movie star El Magnifico is tagged in and he and Ramirez successfully cut off Blake from Hicks, eventually taking the first fall via camel clutch submission. Thinks look bleak for Blake but he manages to catch El Magnifico off guard with a monkey flip and delivers the leaping hot tag. Hicks is a house of fire, nailing Ramirez on the outside floor and drop kicking El Magnifico into the corner. Another monkey flip followed by a second rope leg drop has El Magnifico stunned and a tag to Blake lets them double flap jack the Magnificent and even up the score at 1 fall a piece. El Magnifico barely has time to tag in Ramirez as Blake is eager and rushes into their corner, grabbing Ramirez and sending him into the Irregulars' corner. A tag to Hicks and a kick to the gut to Ramirez sets up a bulldog from the top rope by Hicks. Ramirez kicks out at 2 & 3.8/4's. Ramirez battles back, though groggy, and sets up for his Especial de Ramirez (Gory Special) but gets his leg taken out from under him by a crafty Hicks. A backdrop, tag to Blake and a sky high high cross body off the top seals the deal. The two teams again shake hands and pat one another on the back. Winners: The Dixie Irregulars via pinfall/pinfall (Double Flap Jack @ 20:01 & High Cross Body @ 33:14) Barrister and Terwilliger wonder just how much everyone will have in the tank for tomorrow. An advertisement for a local snack delicacy: Fat Boy Meat Sausages, comes up along with their mascot: the Fat Boy Sheep. Vignette Three: South Pacific Tidal Waves Kila Ki'aihua was raised on Oahu, the Witch Doctor says he hates white people for despoiling paradise. Pago Pago is from New Zealand the Witch Doctor says he likes soccer. The two enjoy beating people with their fists. Pago Pagom through the Witch Doctor, discusses the haka, a sacred war dance. The pair have the beautiful Slave Girl Lala and Witch Doctor with them. The Witch Doctor says he prefers Kila and Pago to stay silent, because then they can concentrate on hurting long pigs. Lala dances around in a small costume. Pago Pago and Kila push the camera down and we have static. Vignette Four: The Volunteers Jimmy Owens (blond and svelte) is in a wrestling ring, bouncing off the ropes. His partern, Robert Spivey (dirty blond, same build) is shown waving the Tennessee state flag. Owens talks about growing up in the South and its pride in wrasslin'. Spivey is adamant about going out there for the fans. The two know that the folks pay their hard earned dollars to watch them and they feel they owe it to every last one of them to give 100% every night, all night. Owens and Spivey also remember wrestling in Portland and Seattle fondly, saying they may do another stint up there after this tournament. The two thank the fans and especially thank the ladies. ROUND TWO, MATCH TWO: #2 South Pacific Tidal Waves (Kila Ki'aihua & Pago Pago w/ The Witch Doctor and Slave Girl Lala) vs. #6 The Volunteers (Jimmy Owens & Robert Spivey) The audience boos the big, dangerous Pacific Islanders while Tennessee's own Volunteers come out from the back to a rawkus chorus of cheers. They are beloved fan favorites from way back when, even having a stint in the ESGP. "We Love You Jimmy" and "Spivey Rules, OK" shouts are heard. Owens flies the "Stars & Bars" while Spivey waves the Tennessee state flag Pago Pago, the Maori, begins the match with a haka that the Hawaiian Kila Ki'aihua joins in doing. The two stick their tongues out at good ole southern boys. Nothing but a straight brawl in the first fall, as Kila busts open Jimmy Owens (causing the girls in the audience to gasp and cry). Owens manages to tag out to Spivey and Spivey delivers a stiff left to Kila, dazing him. Ki'aihua tags in Pago Pago and the Maori is about to piledrive Spivey when Spivey turns it into a backdrop - pin combination. A surprising 3 count and a roar of hate from The Witch Doctor come along with that pinfall. Kila rushes into the ring and cold cocks Spivey. Owens, who's face is red due to all the blood he's lost, manges to rush in and take out Kila with a series of drop kicks. The two spill out onto the floor while Pago Pago and Spivey fight. Pago Pago is about to throw Spivey into the ropes via Irish Whip when it is reversed. The Witch Doctor trips Pago Pago, not noticing that it is his man and not Spivey, and Spivey launches from the top rope with the "Stonewall" elbow drop. Academic 1-2-3 and we have an upset! The roar of the crowd is deafening and the Volunteers eat up the attention. Winners: The Volunteers via pinfall/pinfall (Backdrop @ 13:08 & "Stonewall" elbow drop @ 27:30) Barrister is stunned, his home promotion pride not happy with both Evergreen States teams eliminated from the tournament. Still, he is happy that a good team is advancing. Terwilliger wonders if he ran around with a Confederate flag and tight tights if it would improve his chances with the ladies. Vignette Five: Tornado Honda and Mr. Crash Tornado Honda speaks in halting, fractured English. He is "very happy" to be in the United States showing what he has worked years to perfect. Honda is the son of Hideki "Tornado" Honda and took his father's monicker to honor his father. Honda talks about the chance to face El Magnifico and Ramirez, knowing them from his time in Mexico. Highlights of Honda's mix of Japanese and Mexican wrestling are shown as Honda discusses how much he loves wrestling. Mr. Crash, aka Toyo Kuroki, has wrestled all across the world. The 33 year old sometimes wears a mask but is always called Mr. Crash, after an incident where he jumped out of the ring and onto a prone opponent in London. Mr. Crash is also known as a world class baker, attending culinary school in Paris before succumbing to the wrestling bug. Mr. Crash speaks 8 languages and enjoys visiting the Pacific Northwest, if only to finally get to take a boat ride on the Columbia River, completing his "Large Rivers of the World" boating tour. Kuroki is known as a daredevil, willing to go to incredible lengths to please the fans. Crash and Honda are a regular team and both enjoy the competiton and both hope to win the tournament. Vignette Six: Red Alert Jimmy Falcone and Rex Hawke, two average looking wrestlers, have wrestled in many places. They claim to hail from Amsterdam and are looking for a steady home. Hawke and Falcone have travelled almost around the world, not having found any place where they feel their talents are appreciated. Stints in Mexico, Georgia, Texas, Southern California, Middle Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe have given Red Alert experience against most of the teams in this tournament. In fact, highlights of Red Alert vs. Honda & Crash are shown, with Red Alert having taken two out of their three matches in Toyko. Falcone says he and Hawke are ready to take things to the next level. Hawke agrees but says it is nice to be in the United States, somewhere where success has eluded them. ROUND TWO, MATCH THREE: #7 Tornado Honda & Mr. Crash vs. #14 Red Alert (Jimmy Falcone & Rex Hawke) The match is already under way and it seems that Honda and Crash have taken round one with a double team manuever that was a combination backbreaker and double axe handle. Red Alert is fighting for its life, as Hawke has suplexed Mr. Crash to the outside, with Crash landing hard, to the delight of the fans. Tornado Honda lives up to his name as he rushes in and delivers a swinging neckbreaker to Hawke. The referee is at a loss as Falcone comes in and Pearl Harbor's Honda. A double suplex and spike pile driver set up Red Alert tying the score at 1 fall all around. Mr. Crash has recovered, though, and is up top. Honda pushes Hawke towards Mr. Crash, and Mr. Crash responds with a spinning top rope DDT combination. The audience is stunned by the awesome manuever, but erupt in applause. Hawke and Crash are down, both greedily sucking in air. Honda and Falcone are duking it out, but Falcone runs right into a martial arts kick to the temple. Tornado Honda sets up for his finisher, TORNADO AIR FALL. Honda throws Falcone into the ropes and then goes into some sort of handstand that catches Falcone on the shoulders, with his feet. He then flips Falcone and ends up on top of Falcone's chest. Honda's time in Mexico shows as he hooks the legs for the 3 count. An eruption of fan spazgasm rushes over Honda and Crash as the Japanese team advances. Winners: Torando Honda & Mr. Crash via pinfall/pinfall (Crash Tornado Hammer @ 12:17 & TORNADO AIR FALL @ 26:03) The announce team is still reeling from the display put on by the Japanese wrestlers. Mr. Crash seems to be popular as his yellow and black mask combination is seen quite a bit in the audience pan shot. The next match is a big one, as Big City Wrestling's Slick and Sleek take on the upset kids: Britain and Batterson. Vignette Seven: Slick and Sleek Jerome Slick and Ervin Sleek have known each other since they were old enough to walk. The two were raised in Harlem, NYC and were All Americans in basketball (Slick) and baseball (Sleek) A knee injury de-railed Slick's ABA career and Sleek couldn't make it past AA but the two knew their athletic careers weren't over. Slick and Sleek went off to Michigan and began wrestling in Michigan Wrestling Association, quickly becoming stars before being signed to a big contract with Brooklyn's own Big City Wrestling. The two are fan favorites, delighting crowds all along the east coast. Their fued with The Black Nights in BCW and, later, in NEG, are the stuff of legends. After leaving BCW for a year in NEG, Slick and Sleek made their big return and finally beat The Hardball Furies (Bob "Fireball" Gibbons & Johnny Clout) for the BCW Tag Team Championship. Slick and Sleek want to bring home the money and trophy, mainly the money, so they can throw a big ole party and dance the night away. Vignette Eight: Jack Britain & Bart Batterson Batterson (a pudgey guy) and Britain (young hoss) are on screen. Britain speaks first, telling us about his love of wrestling. This is the profession he will live and die in, betting all his marbles on this as a career. Britain's eyes light up when talking about being in the squared circle. The two Graceland Grappling Organization youngsters were paired together to get experience, but seem to get along quite well. Batterson is a former collegiate wrestler of note, having done very well nationally. Batterson is worried wrestling may not be as pure as it used to be but is fighting to keep tradition alive. Britain and Batterson both say that they are honored to have been selected by GGO to represent the company in the big tournament being held in the Pacific Northwest. They promise to do their best and win it all for their fans and their promotion. ROUND TWO, MATCH FOUR: #4 Slick and Sleek (Jerome "Black Velvet" Slick & Ervin "Pearly White" Sleek) vs. #13 Jack Britain & Bart Batterson Britain and Batterson are in the ring, a moderate amount of applause for the Cinderella team, but the crowd is waiting to erupt for the Big City Wrestling champions. Suddenly, music fills the Memorial Coliseum as "Love Rollercoaster" by The Ohio Players blares over the PA. Looking fresh in fur coats, big sunglasses and feathered hats come out Jerome "Black Velvet" Slick and Ervin "Pearly White" Sleek, the Big City Wrestling tag team champions, better known as Slick and Sleek. Wolfman Jack is heard also, saying: "Ladies and Gentleman, let's welcome those bad, bad men: Sllllllllllllllllllick and Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Slick and Sleek slap hands with the fans, urge them to get off their butts and on their feet, somehow whipping the audience into a higher state of appreciation. The two stand on opposite turnbuckles and the people get even louder. Bannister and Terwilliger are marvelling at just how much the BCW wrestlers can work the crowd into a frenzy. Sleek has a bandage on his head but the second big man of Slick and Sleek says he'll start out. Before the match begins, Slick and Sleek clap for Britain and Batterson, urging the audience to do the same. The crowd cheers for a good minute for both teams and a nod starts us off with a collar and elbow tie up between "Pearly White" and Britain. Erv Sleek is the stronger of the two but he's not fully recovered from the blow to the head. A series of headlocks, full nelsons and hammerlocks get the crowd behind Sleek, who finally powers out and launches Britain to his corner. Double tag and Slick is head bobbing, pointing and Batterson. Bart takes down Slick by the leg and works on it with leg laces, crabs, and other knee centric manuevers. Slick manages to get to the ropes, but he's hobbled. Batterson makes the mistake of rushing the former Golden Gloves winner and Black Velvet gives Bart an uppercut that takes the collegiate wrestling star off his feet. A big boot and face plant slam get Slick and Sleek an early pinfall. Slick's leg is in no shape to continue, though, as Batterson pounces on him after the pinfall. A tag to Britain and a piledriver followed by rolling kneedrop finishes off Slick almost as fast as Slick finished off Batterson. In the span of 12 minutes two pinfalls have been exchanged and Slick is on the ropes. A desperation tag by Slick gets Sleek in and Sleek roaring. The Pearly one side slams Britain and tosses him into a corner, setting up for the "Night Train to Slumberlane" spear tackle, but Britain has been thrown into his own corner and has tagged Batterson. Britain moves and Batterson staggers Sleek with a forearm shiver to the back of the head then a neckbreaker. Britain does a leaping knee to the chest before leaving the ring. Batterson pulls Sleek into the middle of the ring and applies a rear chinlock, wrenching it in for a good 6 minutes before Sleek submits. Winners: Jack Britain & Bart Batterson via pinfall/submission (Rolling Kneedrop @ 11:55 & Chinlock submission @ 22:08) The explosion of applause for the upset kids is deafening as Commissioner Pat Barker is now in the ring, telling folks that night two is tomorrow in Seattle, Washington and the Seattle Center Coliseum, under the shadow of the Space Needle. Francis Barrister signs off and tells the viewers that they haven't seen anything yet while Terwilliger wonders where his betting slip has gone. The fans are stomping their feet as all the competitors from Night One come out to the ring and take bows. Pat Barker returns for one last announcement: Night Two is sold out but will be shown on television just like Night One. More cheers and the EGSP logo flashes on the screen as "The Voice of the Cascades" bids us good night. |
