Back in the summer of 2008, Bob Morris helped kickstart a process to vote on the top 100 characters in UWF history, and we brought together a group of seven veteran handlers to vote on them, those handlers being:

Bob himself, of course
Mike Sonby
Gib Crosby
Kyle Lee
Chris O'Brien
Our Fearless Leader, Mike Beeby
and myself, John DeWolfe

Now, we never got through all the voting and discussion to the best of my recollection - we got stuck around halfway, but we did come up with a provisional top 50, and I'm not sure anything was ever done with it. But I happen to have all the emails that were sent back and forth still in my gmail account, and I thought it'd be interesting to show you the top 50 we picked and see if it sparks any discussion. Keep in mind, this was done two years ago, so some current guys had thinner UWF resumes then.

The UWF Top 50, as voted on by some guys who have been doing this far too long (except Steve, who apparently had a real life in the summer of 2008)

1 - Youth Gone Wild
2 - Serge Annis
3 - Alex Kidd
4 - Scott "Hotspot" Daniels
5 - Crimson Joe Reed

6 - Brett Greene
7 - The Fraternity Boys
8 - "Dark Horse" Randall Osbourne
9 - Tragedy
10 - Quinn Brown

11 - "Agony" Michael Augustine
12 - "Doomsayer" Kyle Lee
13 - The Machines
14 - Daniel Kidd
15 - Tom Landis

16 - Edmond Winston IV
17 - "Erotic" Erin McCoys
18 - "Tornado" Tara Smith
19 - Harlequins Chaos and Terror
20 - Tim Vexton

21 - The Maloney Brothers
22 - Randy Acorn
23 - Team Canada
24 (tie) - "Nighthawk" Michael Bonn
24 (tie) - Sebastian Jericho

26 - "Cardiac Kid" Joey Valachi
27 - The Fabulous Ones
28 - Brewster Cogburn
29 - The American Dragons
30 - "Superstar" Stephanie Harper

31 - Tara Marshall
32 - Luis "Terminator" Garavello
33 - Jason Keening
34 - One-Winged Angel
35 - Caliban

36 - Alex Martinez
37 - Alex Extreme
38 - Chris Courtade
39 - Donna Tetreault
40 - "Iceman" Greg Smith

41 - Black Diamond
42 - Luke Kinsey
43 - "Thrillseeker" Tommy Elliott
44 - Tigress
45 - The Privateers

46 - "Sudden Death" Shane Matthews"
47 - "Violent" Victor Frost
48 - "Mockingbird" Nina Grimsson
49 - Sabbath
50 - "Alluring" Arielle Starr

Voting on 51 to 75 was only partially done, but I could give some honourable mentions to the guys who were frontrunning in that bunch, which were:

Derek Martin, Uriah Hawkins, Trey DaMann, Sons of Cacophony, Ryu Osawa, Throbbing Mattress Kittens, Dan Kauffman, Brian von Braun, Luke Sampson, and Idol Austin.

I was surprised Lee was so high. Shows the power of Marshall Law I suppose.
Everything I learned about soccer, I learned from Dro.

You are to refer to Katie as "The Duchess of Der Basterdmusen" as of June 2014. She'll get angry if you don't. You've been warned.

The sad thing is, that list is probably already outdated. I can't see Martin, Epstein, or Trey not being on it by now.

Time to go start over! ;)

As a bit of background, I started that list discussion because it was the UWF's 10th anniversary, so I figured it might be something worthwhile to put together and share with everyone.

I would certainly say we'd see some new names make the top 50 and there would also be those names of more recent arrivals that would make the top 100, if not the top 50.

Epstein (#37) is on the list.

And I agree that if we did the list today, there's be some significant turnover. Then again, I'm terrified that Terry and Pedro would lead a voting pack to elect Nikki the Cat #1... :P

To my mind, no one has yet broken that top 5, and it'd take a hell of an effort to do so. But below that level, yeah, lots of turnover. Kinsey (#42) and Epstein (#37) have both shot up the list. Derek Martin and Trey DaMann were both extremely close to being in the top 50 then, and they've both made it with lots of room to spare by now. (Common denominator - feuding with a past his prime Brett Greene! Making the stars of tomorrow, today!) Ryu Osawa, who was a few votes short of the top 50 then, has probably done enough to move past that borderline as well. A. Mart did more for his UWF legacy before 2008 than after, but he's for sure picked up a spot or two at least. I'd be surprised if Tommy Stephens didn't pick up some votes, and the fed-wide magnitude of the Guard storyline means Gamma Ray has to get some consideration. And at the time, Gabe Whitecross was getting a few votes for the 51-75 region, but I'd put him much higher now.

But the guy who'd probably make the biggest move, in my mind and on my ballot if this had been done now instead of 2008, is Tumaffi. I could see him making an immediate move somewhere into the low teens without the least bit of controversy.

That's only half true!

You don't even have Vasquez on that list! One character campaign at a time!

Come on, now!
Any list that doesn't include Nikki the Cat in the top ten immediately and irrevocably loses all credibility, we all know this to be true!

TUMAFFI SHALL REMOVE ALL CONTROVERSY BY DESTROYING ALL THOSE IN HIS PATH, STARTING WITH #2, JUST AS SOON AS THE PHYSICIANS CLEAR AWAY THE EXCESS CALCIFICATION THAT WERE ELECTROLYZED INTO MY JOINTS. TUMAFFI CAN ONLY NO-SELL FOR SO LONG.

Glad to be on that list with Victor. Really had a good time in UWF with him and I can't believe how long that was ago.

It's cool to see Idol Austin was being considered when the list was first put together. Hard to believe it was 10 years ago that I moved him to UWF out of the NWC. Good times back in the day.

Every time I think of someone who needs to be on the list, I find them 5 seconds later. That Alex Extreme is higher on the list than Dan Kauffman, Ronnie D, or Luke Sampson is a gift that keeps on giving. :D

As a whole I think the top 5 is solid. I think I'd move Annis to #1 and Reed to #3 but that preference. Erin McCoys placement, no matter what your feelings are there, was warranted and maybe could have even been higher.

Moving Extreme/Epstein out of the 30s would be an error. He's made his mark in UWF but there aren't a lot of huge uwf moments with him--unless it's him getting killed.
