I kind of felt bad for Fontana pointing that out in a promo, but figured that stratting for Fontana to take the dive for Nevermind would more than compensate for it. I was later told Don had done the same as well in one of Nevermind's earlier runs. Nevermind still being around means his gimmick defeated logic at least twice already! ![]() |

OK... Well, dressing up a top ten for this one was extremely difficult, because I think I could count the RPs I didn't like off only one finger. Anyways, here's a top 10... and my top 10's change everything. This one is already not the same one I gave some peeps yesterday... so I'm not lying, I change my mind daily, lol. William Craven This one was probably my favourite, just for how spellbinding it is. The likeliest flaw is probably not even mentioning the match gimmick. ... You know I'm a negative cynic when I start going on about my favourite promo's flaws already... *le sigh* Johnny Detson Get a spellchecker or something, Errol! Geez! The actual biggest flaw and simultaneous quality of this one is how much it makes you want to cheer for Detson. Like L&G he just refuses to admit he's totally a beloved babyface. Dro called it called it fun, entertainng and convincing, 3 things that make Detson a great face! Supreme Wright When Terry does Supreme right (The pun wasn't intended, but it's so lame I have to point it out, now), he doesn't dazzle or amaze, but simply writes a promo that doesn't have any flaws to it. He elevates Freeman, hypes the match, promises to beat his opponent. Does everything needed at this early stage of the feud. SCD I play Left 4 Dead and its sequel so often, and AMC's "Walking Dead" is my favourite show... you gotta know I mark for zombies. OK, I know they're not zombies at all, I was in Mexico for Day of the Dead, once. Anyhoo, I mark for the setting and for SCD's pure goodness, even if I have a hard time believing anyone that pure good could actually exist. Also, SCD should know that his little amigos and amigas won't settle for justice; they want preposterously over the top REVENGE! REE! VENDJE! Marcus Manson I admit it, Manson took me by surprise. Honest truth is that on my 1st reading of the packet, I zoned out and skipped over Manson. Had to go back when Don posted his favs and I realized I didn't remember Manson's at all. Anyways, it's done with a very classic formula, but I can't remember a promo that made the TV title sound this important and prized. Also, excellent job on elevating Uncle Frank. No a fan of obviously idle threats like "breaking his neck." Don't threaten to do something that has zero chance of happening. AsH It has a slow start, and ends up being too long, but in it's defense, it has to be. JC really does make the absolute best of the situation his character has been put in as he can, making AsH into a strong underdog you can believe in, despite everyone knowing he doesn't have a chance in hell. His job was to be built up and sacrificed for the sole purpose of padding the champ's record, and AsH really went above and beyond all expectations in succeeding at this. The irony is that a babyface champion would be so vastly more useful right now, making easy feuds with heels likes of Detson, Craven, Spectre, etc... yet in spite of this, we all know Gibson Hayes is retaining because that's just how dominant the character is, atm. It's kind of strange, in a way... Rob Cole Cole here does a better job than Craven at a few things, notably hyping the match and it's gimmick. It's also too long, and doesn't acknowledge the events of the previous Hw much (not that Craven truly does either). There's strong emotion, and you can feel it's the blowoff coming. HvD I very much like this exciting new direction for HvD, the only thing that made it fall down the ranks is because it's a repetition of the last Heatwave's on-card. There's no other choice to make it that way, really, but it being the same thing does make it lose a bit of potency. The absolute best way to rejuvenate HvD's character at this point. Gibson Hayes There's a certain level a GH promo never fails to reach, and it's still true for this one here. The main flaw is actually pointing out so convincingly that AsH isn't the opponent handlers want to see for GH right now. But by underlining how so undeniably unworthy AsH is, it really defuses the title. We know AsH is only there to pad Gibson's record, and this promo only makes it even more obvious. It does keep the champion's utter dominance quite intact and unblemished, so it has the important quality of making Hayes look like an untouchable champion. The Spectre It kind of suffers from what Sammy Knight's promo suffers from, as it repeats a lot of things that have been said already throughout the cycle. Does a good job of selling that Spectre wins either way, either he succeeds in beating Knight, or he succeeds in transforming Knight into a beast vicious enough to beat the Spectre. Idly, though... I was wondering how many PVW characters would ever "fear the dark." The list can be counted on one finger. As a whole, though, it's probably the strongest packet of the cycle, nearly everyone putting out above average work or better! Writing this, though, I started wondering... Why did we not have Detson vs Hayes on this cycle, again? Hindsight booking is easy; you never have unexpected stuff happening in hindsight! ... Yet, handlers in general wanted to see Hayes vs Detson, having just won the Called Shot, it felt like Detson was indeed the most legitimate contender. Since it would have been very easy to post-pone the Presidential Race angle by a cycle... why is it we didn't have Detson vs Hayes, again? Detson vs Hayes would have been super easy to follow with Winner vs Craven, for example. It's not meant as criticism, because if I remember right I actually agreed with delaying Detson vs Hayes back at the beginning of the cycle. It's just that I've completely forgotten why it seemed to make sense at the time. |

Actually, I feel I should point out that Nevermind is in fact, _not_ a nihilist. Nihilism requires a certain degree of passion, which Nevermind is against. He sees himself as an agent of apathy. He feels that regardless of what happens, we should just not care. That way, you feel no pain. Or perhaps he's trying to force the world to change for the better, by making them see the small, petty things that they place such importance on are in fact, meaningless, so they see the big picture and decide to work towards making the world a better place for everyone. Or, maybe he's just an a-hole that likes to beat on people and justifies it by claiming to feel nothing while he does it. It's all good. |

An agent of apathy? ...I love that. After your explanation, I feel I have a better hold in the character now, especially if HE believes he has a benevolent edge behind everything. Could make him much more dangerous in the future. |

things that hit me: AsH: I get it. I still think maybe he sold himself a little short, methinks. Fontana: Everytime he says OUAIS~! I want to kick a puppy. Knight: I get the point of the first half... but dunno how it and the second half fit together. Craven: Good piece. I liked it. Merc: Excellent piece. Nicely ties back to the joint RP with Extreme in the same setting earlier this cycle. I loved the end where Flo asks if he's retiring and Merc actually expresses remorse, saying that his best friend is and it's Merc's fault. Even after all that's gone on this cycle, Merc still calls Alex his friend. Black: Coupled with the events on the special, this worked well. Really interested in seeing how this ends or continues. L&G: I laughed out loud during their conversation about the satellite phone. I'm still laughing at "Please stop cursing. Please stop cursing. Uh-huh. Please stop cursing." Spectre: I like that he acknowledged that Knight doesn't seem to find him frightening, but he doesn't care, and aims to proove to Knight that he's got to become more like Spectre to have any hopes of beating him. Glad Manson's bit was as popular as it seems to have been. I think it did everything I wanted it to do.

I'll give my two cents... on every single flash of the show. The level of awesome on the show made it too hard to narrow it down to just a top-10, and a top-10 doesn't give enough credit to the guys who didn't make it but still put forth great work. It took a few days to put it together around life and match writing, but don't say I didn't do my part to give you those 4-5 pages Brian. ![]() AsH: I liked the wordless opening, following him around... but when did AsH become a druggie? What kind of role model is that? Good all around, though he pushed the underdog role so hard that even people who thought it might be his turn to run with it likely don't believe he has a chance. Any win at this point would be a fluke, and that's not the position you want to put yourself in as the good guy. But if he DOES end up winning it, talk about a celebration. Interesting approach, but came across well.Berserkers: Didn't like the team at all when I first read them. But they're getting better. I don't think he paid attention to the ASLL card though: "Los Corazones you two have held those tag team titles for quite sometime..." But good improvement from the team. Perry Fontana: Did a good job of putting over HvD, while simultaneously criticizing him. I'm finally starting to get really interested in the Fontana turn, and this was a good step for it. You can almost see the two sides of Fontana's brain tugging at each other. Fontana vs HvD is one of the toughest predictions for me for Boiling Point, and he did a better job putting over the match here than usual. Good stuff. Supreme Wright: A little bit cookie-cutter, but I'm more interested in the match after reading the flash than I was before it so the goal was achieved. The use of the Phoenix/Freeman match as the foundation of his metaphor was well done. Didn't wow me, but definitely accomplished its purpose. Sammy Knight: Didn't love the opening, thought it was a little unnecessarily long and drawn out. But once he got going it turned gold. Agreed with JC that it was the best Knight flash overall since his debut. There was some genuine desire to knock down the monster displayed, and the last line was set up and pulled off very well. Enjoyed the flash so much I read it a second time. The Biz: I actually liked the idea of blowing off JDM and Devin in this way. It seems kinda sudden, but it came across in a "I need to do this myself" kinda way. The flash gave the match a little more importance in my mind. Wrapped up fairly quickly, but another flash that accomplished its purpose. Chris Hartt: First half of the flash was serious gold. I loved the "But, I had to reach my lowest point to do it, and if I didn't hate him so much, I might even thank him for it" line, it perfectly exemplified everything this match stands for. The second half of the flash was a step down from the beginning, but this was another flash that accomplished the goal of setting up the PPV match beautifully. William Craven: Wow. Seen a bunch of Craven in the past. And this feud with Cole is bringing out some of his best work. Agreed with Dro and JC totally... maybe the best promo of the packet, and possibly the best I've seen from Craven. His entire career is reflected in this very feud, and his disgust for what Cole represents is impressively explained. Gonna be hard for Cole to top that. Adrian Freeman: Decent promo. You can sense his frustration at the difference in hype between Freeman and Wright, and you can also sense the opportunity he feels. The depth gone into at the end about the Deep Freeze finisher seemed a tad cheesy, but like Wright's flash it definitely made me more interested in this match. Looking forward to seeing who comes out of it and where both sides go from here. Erich Seiger: Eh. Decent intro flash. Nothing fabulous, but not poor either. But I know more about him now than I did before, so that's not a bad thing. Interested to see where he goes post-PPV. Max and Sal: They're clearly taking this match very seriously. And they should, this is their best chance to wrest those titles away from the champs. I didn't really feel hatred for L&G, and that would have seemed odd so I'm glad they didn't go there, but they clearly want to prove the first match wasn't a fluke. Good setup for the match. Uncle Frank: It was a bit short. But Uncle Frank can pull that off. He's fit right in with the Hayes troupe, turning things around and making Manson seem like the jerk. Wasn't dazzled by this one, but that's just trying to nitpick since I admittedly love Uncle Frank. Larry Gionet: I kinda liked this one. Needed some proofreading, but I liked the intentions. The veteran punishing the rookie for being out of place gives more motivation to the match than just the "you ran in on me and now I'm gonna kick your ass" that I expected from the match. Marcus Manson: Wow, good stuff here. The "uncle" moment at the end was unneeded, but every thing else came across very very well. Another one I read twice just to fully absorb it. This flash did as much to promote the importance of the TV Title as anything I've read about it since I got here. Strong desire-filled promo. The Mercenary: Interesting development. This angle definitely needs to continue, this is a more conflicted Merc than I'm used to seeing. Nothing wowed me, but it did make me more interested in seeing what happens in the match so mission accomplished. Danny Daniels: Fun read. Didn't dazzle me. But probably didn't need to, these two have said enough about each other. A perfect movie-trailer-esque promo to set up the match and make me want to cheer the good guy. Phoenix: Good metaphor to open. The first paragraph completely explains the entire purpose of the match, and makes me want to cheer the good guy and dislike the bad guy. Gionet and Phoenix together made me care about a match I didn't care about before. Good job to both. HvD: Agree with Flouze, this is a great development for the character. It's a modification and change that I had not expected to see. Both Fontana and HvD have gone through a slight metamorphosis due to this feud, and it's making both characters grow. But HvD needed this development even more than Fontana did... it's good to see some freshness from the character. Maybe a bit redundant, but would be hard to do a top-10 flashes from Showcase without including this for me. Christopher Black: I've grown to love this character this cycle. He went from a good character to one of the most evil bastards I've ever read. And the fact that he's not settling there makes me happy, in a seriously wrong kinda way. It'll be hard to keep up without eating a puppy in front of PETA, but I'm looking forward to seeing him try. Livestock & Gutch: The Gutch scapegoat thing is coming off well, with Livestock being stuck protecting his partner. And the exchange about the phone was the best chuckle I got from the entire show, so a bonus point there. But it doesn't seem like the champs are quite as focused as the challengers, which given the distractions and complacency from their long reign was probably intentional. Masked Maniac: Overlooking a 7-foot rookie is a dangerous thing Maniac. But he's always a fun read, and the Blue Diamond thing keeps me interested in him. More jobbers should get this kind of attention. ![]() Nevermind: I liked this one a lot. It did a perfect job of breaking down the motivation for the match. And I never saw Nevermind as not caring about "anything"... he just doesn't care about the chaos he's caused Hart. Hartt and Nevermind took two very different approaches here that still somehow diverged, Hartt almost glad that he went down this road while Nevermind reminding him that it's a road he can't turn back from. These two did a good job of promoting the match. Sinister: It came off a little long-winded. But he got across the points he wanted to get across. I always find it humorous though when faces ask heels if they REALLY want to be mean and evil. The "bit more... severe" comment at the end had me intrigued though, stepping up one notch to teach Biz a lesson could be fun to watch. Johnny Detson: I, too, loved the "They want me because I'm not a hero, I am a leader" approach. Very rarely does a heel truly justify his actions in a way that totally makes sense to me, but Detson pulled that off here. The "hero vs leader" element is the centerpiece of the match, and was sold beautifully here. Rob Cole: I loved the in-promo transformation, from the remnants of the scared Cole who wasn't sure he wanted to keep fighting into the hate-filled man intent on punishing Craven. And he did definitely do great job of promoting the match stips, which is very important since PVW rarely goes to this extent. It did run a little longer than it needed to, but it was very very effective. Spectre: The goal of not necessarily defeating the person but defeating the image of said person is a good angle to take in promoting this match. Came across as a very good way to spin the "I'm not scared of you" approach Knight took into "I didn't want you to be scared of me, I wanted you to be scared of what I'm making you become." Very well thought out pre-PPV promo. Senor Cloak Dos: Exactly what he needed to do before the match. He's the biggest true babyface in PVW, and his remorse for wanting revenge is exactly what he needed to go from the last few shows into his big PPV match. He'll get his chance for revenge, but it shouldn't be his motivation. It walked that line very well, and sets up one of the ultimate good vs evil matchups I've seen in the game. Gibson Hayes: Didn't love this one, actually. I get the point he was going for, but like Flouze said, he slammed AsH so hard that the match seems less important than the World Title match should be. Other matches on the card seem so much more important than this one does after reading this packet... UNLESS AsH is taking home the gold, in which case both Gibson and AsH gave flawless promos that perfectly overlooked the potential upset. But if that's not happening, which I think most assume it's not, then I think the other matches on the card were generally set up much better than either guy sold this match. A victory for Gibson won't seem that important, and a loss for AsH will be almost expected suggesting he was never a valid candidate in the first place. Not the setup you want for a PPV main event, especially if it's record padding for Gibson. |

Thanks for the read and feedback. I crave it so I can improve as a writer and improve the character. I was actually debating explaining what the pills were, but wanted to leave it open for interpretation. In MY mind, they are daily single dose arthritis meds. I started having to take them at 26 due to recurring complications after a broken back. They aren't miracle pills, but they slow down the degradation and keep the pain low... My thought was that AsH, having been wrestling since he was 20 and at an extremely high risk style, would need something similiar... But again, in the 'real' wrestling business, painkillers are the norm and seemingly how a lot of the talent gets by. So really, if you think he's a druggie, he very well could be and just hiding it well for the most part. |

Total druggie. ![]() Nah, I figured it was something as such, but I smiled as the thought crossed my mind so I put it down. Smiley face = not totally serious with Jerod. I do agree that leaving it open to interpretation was the better idea though, can't think of any way to spell it out without ruining the opening. |

I thought you wanted him to stay a heel? ![]() (insert anti-PETA rant here) Glad most folks like what I'm doing with Black. I hadn't had him and Jacob together directly interacting with each other since the verbal attack on Josie, so I wanted things to come full circle, so to speak, with those two. And like I said earlier, I've got a couple of ideas in the pipeline that I hope will play out for later, if only to let me mentally decompress for a bit. Mike tends to get worried when I start channeling sociopaths...

Question is: How do we continue SCD and Black to it's logical conclusion? Assuming everyone has the same logic as I do, and it ends in a very "The Shield" like fashion, with Dos finally forced to murder Black for the greater good, and then wallowing in his guilt before picking up the same gun, years later and staring into the barrel... ...yeah, need to stop watching FX for a bit. |

*marks for "Shield" reference, one of my fave all-time shows* The writer (and former fedhead/booker) in me, could see this continuing to build 'til someone suggests something insane, such as a Japanese-style exploding ring death match to put both SCD/Black risking it all life/limb/etc... However, w/o really chatting w/both you and Katie to get your feelings/thoughts on that, that's only the first idea I'd immediately have come to mind. That or start having Black become the new Joker (I could see Katie as Black doing the quote from "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker," "I'd laugh if it weren't so pathetic. Ah what the hell....I'll laugh anyway!" *cue Mark Hamill Joker-laugh* And throwing back to an earlier Jerod comment, you'll be happy to be teased and know that your favorite Uncle Frank will have a bit more to say before his match. >:) |

I would say continuing to build would be a mistake. The characters need to establish themselves outside of this feud or run into the almost assured outcome of being entirely defined by this incident. Sure it can remain smoldering embers but escalation of the Japanese Death Match kind is the worst place you can go. In fact, simplifying is probably the best route. The initial situation is complex but peeling away the baggage (including Jodie) can reveal more core truths and make it go beyond the initial trappings. |
