Now, Brian's probably got the email in his PVW box right now, so whoever's writing the Nevermind/Tiegs match can stop bothering with it. I'm out of e-wrestling. Criticism is one thing....however, ripping on a person, whether it be joking, sarcasm, etc.. to the point where this game isn't even worth bothering with anymore....*shakes head* Remember folks, this IS a game, not let's rip a character 'til it's no longer worth playing the game. |

I was watching this thread and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Firstly, I don't think any of the criticisms given were directed at Tiegs' handler personally. They were merely people's opinions of the rp that they read. Perhaps not all of it was tactful, but this forum is not exactly a bastion of tact. But I never once thought any of it was meant as a personal insult. I think that reading something off a post, without hearing vocal inflection or nuance can sometimes make things come off as harsher than they were originally intended. That being said, it _is_ a game. And I don't think you should quit playing the game because of perceived insults without knowing the actual intent behind it. I really don't feel that any of the comments made were malicious. A tad on the insensitive side, mmm... maybe, but that's the spirit in which most comments are made on these forums. I for one know that there's not a mean bone in 'Dro's body, and I really don't think that Flouze, Berger or any of the others mean anything they wrote as a personal attack. Bottom line, learn from it, move on from it, get over it and keep playing a game you enjoy. Or even better, just never mind... |

All things considering, Dro, Flouze, Berger and even Terry towards the end were pretty damn diplomatic in their critiques -- which is what they were, not dogpiling. Cole was blunt, but it's justified. But all of them were constructive in that criticism. The character comes across as an ignorant egomaniac inflated by the cheers of another organization. Why even come to Phoenix if he's so loved elsewhere? The way he's being presented it sounds like he's already jumping in front of men like Sinister, Senor Cloak Dos and Chris Hartt -- established faces who have busted their humps -- and that they don't matter. If this were a Pern RP, he'd be called out for being a shiny hunter -- first day in and he already wants to have a gold dragon. And even still, it could have all worked. New guy clashing with the vets about wanting to lead the charge while HOPE exploits the disunity? My gawd, that is RP BOOKING GOLD! Instead, the passive-aggressive card gets pulled. Rather than consider the concept that maybe Tiegs should be toned down or reworked, it's "Obviously everyone is PICKING! ON! ME! CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIIIIIIIIIN~!!!!" "Just a game" cuts both ways, man. |

Ripping? This ain't nothing. [Proudly displays his "I Survived the WWO" plaque.] I don't think the promo came across quite as bad as some suggested... but many people offered some pretty useful insight. And multiple handlers said they'd be willing to offer input personally. One promo won't define a character's legacy (Sammy Knight came back just fine from his)... any good writer should always strive for improvement, and that's what most people offered. I thought it was pretty civilized, actually. And it's important to note that handlers have ripped the character. But no handlers ripped you personally, and in-character the other characters are considering Tiegs a threat (Steinar, in particular, put you over quite well in his Uncle Frank promo). This is a long way from unable to recover... you can't let constructive criticism, even if it comes with a jab or two, make the game less fun. Yes, I understand every character SHOULD want to be the World Champ... but a new guy leading the charge against the power heel stable just ain't gonna happen. New guys gotta work their way up. Heck, Moze cracked a joke about C&C/L&G interaction and the first thing I told him was "Well, I don't want to be jumping anyone who's more deserving". And that's in a tag division that had 4 teams before the new signings. It's that way in the real feds too... no way in hell is just-signed Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli) getting a shot at taking CM Punk's WWE Title until he earns his place. That's just the way wrestling works, especially in the big leagues which PVW most definitely has become. Now, as Katie said, if this was spun into an angle, people would have considered it genius. Crossing the fourth line in e-wrestling is a lot harder than doing it in the WWE... giving everyone this impression, then turning it into dissension among the faces, would have actually empowered HOPE and given the story new light. Something like that might have encouraged HOPE to make Tiegs a bigger priority, and accomplished your goals while still telling a good story for the rest of us. That's why it's good to avoid letting the emotions get ahold of you, and talk to people like Brian or those you know in the game (or even those you don't but who offered private input) to get their thoughts before over-reacting. Everything aside from that is just comments for improvement. Hell, I made a comment about a Gibson Hayes flash before Boiling Point, and even Picky (as handler of the World Champion) took the advice in stride. If improvement is not something you're willing or able to do, then it might well be time to step away from the game. But you're more than capable of making adjustments like that... so I'd say just take a step away from the situation, don't let your emotions get the best of you, and review the promo to see if some of the suggestions are valid and where you can improve. I've written a few pretty shitty pieces in my years in the game, but I'm a better writer for having realized that and improved on it than I am for any of the "good" work I've written. |

I emailed Matt directly so I won't really talk about that. PVW has lost a lot of good characters so I don't begrudge anyone who steps away. I think there were some tough love and good solid points made in this thread. I always make a point to mention to new handlers that, PVW isn't the type of league where you come in and point your finger at the World Champion no matter what you have done or where you have been. I think that in a nut shell was the thing inside that RP itself that rubbed people wrong the most. All that being said ... this is a wrestling game. _EVERYTHING_ can be fixed in the end. I wish you the best, Matt. |

Everyone's had some RP's that went over like explosive diarrhea at a funeral, and they lived to retell the tale. At least, I'm pretty sure most handlers could share some stories to that effect. Heck, I write crap that a sizable contingent loathes and I'm still alive. Granted, the moment where you find out an RP isn't received the way you thought it could be is not the fun part, there's no doubt about that. But anyone able to get past that can get to enjoy the times where stuff works! The Matt Tiegs character's got some fire, he just ended up calling out an inappropriate target. And that's not an exception made just for Tiegs, that's something that applies to every new arrival, whether it's a brand new character or a multi-time World Champ. Neither that nor the fact that Tiegs is probably going to get his ass handed back to him by Nevermind on Shockwave should prevent him from being a successful babyface in the long run. All PVW characters stumbled at some point in time, and all of them also had some tough losses (provided they've been around long enough), and that's only normal in an e-fed the quality and size of PVW. Characters rebound all the time, so long as their handlers aren't too easily discouraged. |

Ow. Ow my head. That was just ... such a bad joke. Seriously, maybe the criticism was a little over the top, lord knows it was worse than when Joshua Curtis was around. Think about that; Joshua Curtis got better treatment. I couldn't even read the guy's stuff and I, personally, tried to reason with him on the board somewhat. In chats? I expressed every brand of frustration I had over the character and the handler in private but, frankly, he didn't need to hear about it. Is Matt Tiegs the greatest e-wrestling character ever created? No. But is he the worst? Absolutely not. *Mozeart steps down off the soapbox. And to the handler, I don't know you but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess three things from what I see. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. 1) The character is named for you. Hence you identify yourself very strongly with him. 2) You're young; 25 or younger. 3) You're taking these criticisms as condemnation. Since you, basically, are the character you take these condemnations very personally. Now, me, I'm 35 and I've been playing this game since I was 20 ... continuously ... and sometimes it makes me sad to think about it. Seriously, I did a rough check recently and I've written something north of 30,000 pages. I could've written a bunch of books! Maybe one of them would have been a bestseller. Oi. Where was I? Oh yeah. I play a character named Johnny Axis in another reality (UWF, the slowest efed ever) and when he first came into that reality it was a rough start. Terry, the Critical Jue, cut a mad promo with his guy, Edwin Lopez, that utterly buried poor Johnny. Not only did Axis lose but he was so badly beaten (verbally) that a lot of people thought less of the character. Most everything that Lopez said pointed out JA's potent character flaws. It was pretty damning. So what'd I do? I proved him wrong by proving him right. Johnny thanked Edwin. Now they're allies. It's kind of odd to think about actually. Johnny is based on me and, while you obviously can't respond in-character, you can still make adjustments to your gameplan. Does Tiegs turn heel? Does he become more humble? Also, a criticism I had to suffer myself? Well ... just ask anybody here about "The Meatgrinder". I'm still hearing about it ... what's it been now? A year? Not that big a deal... |
| And it was at this moment that the entire world realized, in unison, that tandem bicycles were AWESOME~! | |
