It was Craven all along. I proposed the idea to Moze and Blue. And yes, Moze did then go tell Jeremy. If you go back and look at the build to the Rumble, Craven does a promo where, with the benefit of hindsight, you'll see he basically comes out and says "I'm the Dragon." |

I went through the show late last night and thought it was well done... ...but I'm going to read it again later today/tonight to go more in depth into my thoughts. But yeah, there were some great surprises. Somebody e-mail Dro for a review! |

I figured I'd let Dave and Moze come to their own defense first but yes, it was indeed Craven from Moment One. There was never consideration for anyone else since it was Moze's pitch. Dave and I did the bulk of the effort in convincing Carlos and Scotty and whoever else to be a part of it since I slapped tape over Moze's mouth after he directly approached Jer but the original pitch for the angle was all his. As for why people would listen to Craven, I never really looked at it that way. Everyone who was involved with the angle would have their OWN reason for wanting to take out Martinez - whether it was the Bombers looking for money and the thrill of knocking off a legend or Langseth pissed at Martinez' insolence or Matthews/Temple/Rogers looking to settle old scores. In fact, I'd argue that the only one who actually knew and cared that it was Craven involved from the start was the Minion. But Moze can choose to tell that story however he likes - that's just how I imagined it in my head. |

My thoughts going up to Donovan/Mizusawa. I'll post more as I finish the card. - Liked the opening music choice the Rising. Had to go and listen to it on YouTube and really liked the choice. - Decent run down of the card, highlighting the big matches. - Chuckled at the Wu-Tang comment and follow-up. RUSSIANS VS. SDW/SUDAKOV: - Decent match. Good as the opener. It had the ending I expected with Sudo pinning Ivan for the win. Not much else to say. LAYTON VS. PRESTON: - Interesting twist on the Spin the Wheel concept. - Like the psychology of this. Layton grabbing his head. He's not out to win this match. He's out to pull Preston to the Darkness and make him fall. Layton is the Master's sacrificial lamb. - Nice symbolism. The wheel breaks, so the Master can't help Layton. Didn't expect Preston to win clean. Saw this as his fall. Good match. Really enjoyed it. Ends the angle with Preston nicely. SUMMERS VS. LYNCH - I wrote it and had fun doing it. Turned out better than I thought. BOMBERS VS. ACES: - Loved the match. Blue passed my expectations with the psychology of the match. - I'm curious to see if the Bombers roll a face turn off of the outcome or how exactly that's handled. Good commentary. BROSSARD PROMO: Oh man. Doran, you knocked the ball out of the park with this one! LOVE the end. "And at the end of the day, when Stevie's team falls apart, and all the King's horses and all the King's men can't put Stevie's team back together again, I will be there to- [Jason Dane finishes the sentence, seeing where Broussard is going.] JD: To steal the spotlight? MB: Wrong. I'll be there to put the spotlight _back_ to where it has belonged all along. On the first rate, first class, first ever champion of the AWA, custom made from head to toe, and tailor made to regain my throne. Marcus Broussard. Learn to love it, Jason." SVB RETIREMENT THING: - Thanks to Jer for pitching in and helping with it. I had fun finally getting this history to come into play after waiting fifteen years. WOMEN'S MATCH: I wrote it. Thanks to Summers/Lynch, this was very easy to write. The spots suggested by Hotbody's handler made scripting it easy too. |

I'll do more of it tonight. For now: A live blog of sorts. -I'm extremely confused on the Memphis/Southaven thing. Did i miss something? -I've already said it in a private email, but I'll say it here. The big angle for the Summer should be the PCW and AWA title unification match, with the winner becoming the first AWA World champion. -The Occupy Superclash thing makes sense to me. Dufresne's lost some steam since actually winning the title, but the line from Bucky about being better than the 99%... it just works for me. HANDICAP FOR KOLYA'S FREEDOM -Someone taking on Big Jim Watkins and having him go on a Terry Funk middle aged and crazy run would be awesome. Bill Watts as Terry Funk... weird. -Bucky with the Wu Tang. -AWA is heel heavy and it's starting to just blot out the sun. When I read Kolya win, I immediately thought he should throw off the shackles, metaphorically, then turn on Sweet Daddy and go back to being Kolya the Killer. But he'd just be lost in the shuffle. -We all kinda knew the finish here. Still executed nicely. PRESTON-LAYTON -I think this match sprang from a discussion on JTF about cool gimmick matches. Chris pitched it to me in an email, and I said what the hell. At this point, having fought the darkness for almost two years, on and off, I'm ready for Preston to go on to some less heavy material. -The one thing I struggle with in AWA is where to draw the line between the new school and old school mentality. Is it too new school for Preston to be able to harness the "darkness" to make him more edgy and less of a vanilla pudding pop. Whatever. Cool match. I like the Cobra Clutch Crossface as a finish, and I like how it's a darkness killer. TBC |

The DeSoto Center is located in Southhaven, Mississippi and is probably 10 to 15 minutes south of Memphis. I'm guessing Blue played that up. |

Yes and Blue did a really good job with the "we're not Memphis" reaction, whether he did it intentionally or not...that's exactly the way they act. No one outside of Memphis wants to be considered as part of Memphis. Particularly Southaven, which is by-and-large a very well-to-do area. |

The "Masters Mercy" match was kind of the like the "God of Chaos" match on IIWF Forever (an Ironman match where the stips randomly changed every five minutes), but a very clever touch to have the rules keep changing at the exact times needed to thwart Presto. who stupidly agreed to a match without knowing the rules, or lack thereof, and then shocked me by winning anyway! This match greatly disappointed my Meatman Challenge expectations so much that it became one of the AWA's highlights of the year instead. Kudos to everyone involved! |

I think I was the one who asked 'Okay, where the hell are we finally gonna do Martinez/Craven? We've been talking about it in some form or another since EMWC.' Wrangling back and forth... 'Let's both join AWA!' or something from Dave. More blather, talk about riffing on a certain very well-known comic book story arc, and, very organically, the whole thing took shape. Hehe, I even dropped some blatant hints in PVW where Craven's been talking about dragons and knights for like 6 months or longer. And, again, the whole thing would've fallen apart if I had been allowed to talk about it. Don almost cracked me at one point in a chat and he started out having no idea~! I'm still not sure if he figured it out but if so he didn't let on. |

Yeah, the first part of the angle was definitely 100% about Martinez and how hated he is. Hell, even the Minion, under the mask, has an established history with Martinez and a reason for hating him. As for why someone would listen to Craven? Well, they wouldn't be dealing with him directly. Bill's backstory is that of a miser who earns lots of cash but doesn't spend anything. He's got millions from wrestling and living like a pauper so he can buy help. Also, say what you will, but he has the history of a major player. A major player who's been badly manipulated in the past but, hey, he's working on that. |

Note to self: Have Craven murder Vasquez. There's a match that's never happened. Kinsey and Craven have met, as friends actually, but Craven/Vasquez? Nuttin'. |

To finish my thoughts: DONOVAN VS. MIZUSAWA: - Bodyslam and chokeslam tease. Donovan better slam this guy! - Donovan instead comes off the top since he can't slam the giant. That's acceptable. Donovan wins with a heart punch and does not slam the giant. I feel cheated! THIS IS WHY I PLAY WITH YOUR EMOTIONS, BLUE! YOU PLAY WITH MINE! MARLEY VS. MONOSSO: - Good match. Good story. Great way to tie some ends together to intertwine Percy's individual stories. I see a threat here, named Jer. This threat must be silenced! He's leaving the rest of us in the dust! STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT: - Good for what it was. I wanted Sultan to win (noticing a pattern here!?). All the managers at ringside was hard to digest for me. Came off as too much. - Good way to set up an Antons/PEI feud. I'm really behind these two teams feuding. I think their feud will elevate both of them. - HERCULES! HERCULES! HERCULES! SKKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYWALKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONES! That's all I gots to say, playas. ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN: - Ahhh. Nice stroll down memory lane. Good match. I did not see Adam Rogers turning on Alex at the end. I did not expect William Craven to be the Dragon. Talk about a feud that will tear down the building. I'm hooked. - Final thought, how long is this going to burn before we get to the blow off? I see a "William Craven trying to join AWA" campaign while A-Mart is out nursing his wounds. TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: - Good solid match. Was surprised by the return of the Bishop Boys. Would've liked a clean ending between the two teams. It sets up a VU/Bishop Boys program nicely. I'm excited to see the post-show promos from each team too. NATIONLAL TITLE MATCH: - Supernova works. Solid promo. - Going after that exposed knee! Horsemen attack on Sting nod or the Rude attack on Sting nod? - Really solid psychology here. Dufrense showing he'll do whatever it takes to win and continuing to focus on the knee. Vintage Sting/Flair match right here. Gorilla press with a bum knee and all! - Waterson comes to ringside. Expected that after Bucky's earlier, "He's got a secret weapon" reference. - Liked the false starts on the Heat Wave and the finally hit it. Never say Blue can't deliver drama in matches. - I see another Southern Syndicate coming together. Who would the fourth member be? - Nice locker room emptier to set up Juan's return. Now it becomes the Juan Vasquez show all over again. I'm okay with that. OVERALL REAX: Really solid show, top to bottom. Worth the time spent reading it today. There was a lot that happened on the show, and cudos to Blue for being able to bring it all together without it falling apart or feeling clunky. I'm interested to see where some of these start angles run off to. Favorite match: National Title Match - it had the classic Flair/Sting feel to it. Great drama. Great psychology. Great read overall. Least Favorite Match: Steal the Spotlight - of all the matches, this felt the most clunky to me. Too many managers on the outside. Writing Survior Series style matches is no easy task. Not the worst match I've ever read by far. For this show, my least favorite, even with the players involved. Biggest Surprise Moment: Craven as the Dragon. Never saw that one coming, even if it was obvious to some. Of course, the return of Juan Vasquez. #2012Acesmegapush |
