Did Doran ever listen to the rest?

I did.

As long as there are handlers who are happy with their characters being transitional champions and pieces to a bigger story, then I'm good. However, in my years in e-w, I can think of very few handlers who were happy about losing the top title after working hard to show the fedhead they deserved to have it in the first place. As an aside, I can think of very few fedheads who book more than one or two cycles down the road, and whose booking would be tight enough to include transitional champions and twists and turns. That's not a knock on Brian or anyone, it;'s just from my own experience.

I know we're all "collaborative story tellers" and that's cool, but most of us came from the era where it was a competition and winning the big title, or any title, meant you were good. That still lingers.

As a for instance, I suggested to Bell that, if I was reading it correctly, Detson-Gibson doesn't need the title. if anything, centering the feud around the title would put the personal issue on the backburner, and after hearing your podcast, I believe that even moreso. I suggested that Detson have a great title win at Shattered Dreams, but have to really go through the ringer to win the title. And his first defense be...

...against William Craven. And the combination of Craven being Craven, and some timely jealous Gibson interference, leads to Detson losing the title right away. Now you're fanning the flames on an even more instense Gibson-Detson feud, and you've got a real big bad. As Gibson and Detson continue their MAgnum and Tully bloodfeud, you've got Craven holding the title hostage and beating the shit out of everyone, like Vader in his glory years, the story being that someone has GOT to step out of the wreckage or else Craven will pull a Rocky Marciano.

In my mind, that enhances the story, puts a new spin on the top of the card and all that stuff. But isn't that doing a disservince to Detson and his story, since he fought back from the nuthouse and hates Gibson and was fired because of Gibson? After all that, having Detson get a one month run with the strap is probably not fair to him, even if it would tell an awesome story in the bigger picture.

As an aside, while I like Detson's work, it's hard for me to see him go from incredible asshole heel to top face in the span of three shows and really buy into him as a top face. It seems extremely rushed to me, and that's not a knock on Errol.

You know I'd loved to be able to argue this but I can't it makes too much sense. I mean I'm trying to move it away from Detson Gibson being a personal fued and just have it around Detson's desperate attempt to finally claim a world title. But the history of everything looks like it makes that into foolishness/fantasy.

I've been in that role of transitional champion (3x) and yes its not fun, but its not life ending.

As far as the face thing goes, Detson is defacto face its impossible to try and do otherwise. Gibson just set up the dominant heel stable and has been a dick his entire career. The way I look at it (in the minority no don't) is that its what Detson does (win or lose) after Gibson that will make him face or heel. But people have been saying he's a face anyway so I'm not doing much to dispel that rumor but he's not the top face nor will he ever be I don't think, he's still looking after only himself, he's not jumping in trying to fight off HOPE and he's not coming to anyone's aide.

Stone Cold Steve Austin was the biggest face in the business EVER. And this describes him perfectly. He was always all about himself.

Face doesn't always mean babyface. Detson is Detson, and I can see him being cheered or booed as the situation demands. He's like Chris Jericho; you can try to influence the crowd however you want, but at the end of the day, people like him even when they're booing him.

Well, I also think Detson's a face by proxy. Gibson is such a very hated heel that Detson, a more tongue-in-cheek heel, one who seems in on his own jokes, is going to end up the face. A heel that was SO fucking entertaining, that all of us were cheering despite the "HEEL POP" on the card.
