My review… as always, not going to pull any punches and some feelings might get hurt. Especially with my ending rant…

- Biz Promo

Decent stuff here, teasing his frustration and the upcoming match. Biz is solid in this opening segment, and then we switch to more backstage stuff

- Sinister & Chris Hartt backstage

Sin & Hartt: this was an interesting piece, showing a bit of an alliance building segment for Sin and Hartt. With all this build up to Sin being he locker room leader, I’m hoping that Big Daddy either gets a run at the title in the next cycle OR he gets a major heel turn to shake things up. There are plenty of positive things with the former, but the latter is starting to be an intriguing idea with events that will be discussed later in the review.

- Fontana & Weaver inring

Fontana comes in after the opening and wants his partner to be… Derek Weaver? This leads to a confrontation between the two and Weaver rejecting the idea. And then Fontana marches up the aisle and starts to attack the shoot fighter from HOPE!!! I totally mark out for a moment because this IS what a B.A. face does… and then he locks in the most feared hold in wrestling! On an OOC note, I’m so jealous of Weaver for getting a chance to work with Fontana… he’s absolutely the top guy I want to work with in the coming year. Weaver is quickly becoming a favorite as well, and he really starts to show more of the “heel” aspect to his personality with this segment.

- Four Way Scramble: Hudson v. Biz v. Manson v. Gionet

The writing is well done and keeps track of everything going on… but I’m just not sure how the match itself turned out. The gimmick part with “The Biz” was interesting, but the rest of the match seemed fairly standard.

- Post Match, Manson-Frank-Lineage

Huh? I’m not sure what to think about this… I guess it was interesting in that it blended three feuds a little, but I just don’t know. It seemed a little weird, but not bad. Just sort of left-field.

- Livestock and The Gutch backstage

I guess this is to let us know they’re both here and set up some emotional stumbling blocks between them, which is well and good.

- Heat bit

I tried to get into it… but just wound up skimming. Again, the comedy bits aren’t really my cup of tea.

- Supreme Wright v. Nevermind

Pudges is back! Okay, I really liked this match… this was well written, kept the outside interference in mind for psychology, and did everything it was supposed to do to put over both guys by the end of the match. Kudos to Tracy for a fantastically written series of exchanges! I want this writer for one of MY matches, absolutely!

- Sinister & The Biz backstage

And now The Biz is Dragon Kid… maybe? Maybe a false-face turn? Okay… said I’d talk more on it later but now is not the time.

- Mystery bit

Oooh, someone familiar with the “spike” incident! My guess is Sammy Knight.

- Dawson v. The Mercenary

Good work, good match, looking forward to a big pay off between these two.

- Daniels, Talion, & Quartermann backstage

I’m really digging Quartermann, I’m sort of digging on Talion, and Daniels comedy accents the piece pretty good without it devolving into a rambling mess. And I like how Quartermann is building himself through these segments with the “Occupiers”. I think he needs to take a hit soon or the “Shine” is going to dry up, but great work.

- Derek Weaver backstage

Decent stuff… sells Fontana pretty good, shows that he’s acting MUCH more heelish. We’re also seeing a reason for him to go after Fontana beyond the faces desire to get some pay back. We’re seeing a two person feud starting to build, rather than one.

- Tag Titles Match: Lineage v. Max and Sal

I am mostly impressed with Lineage… and this was a fairly solid match, good highlight for both teams. It’s never a bad thing to lose to the champion, and considering that no one had really built severe momentum going into the match it’s not a surprise to see the champs retain.

- Kevin Quartermann backstage

See earlier comments

- Sinister & Senor Cloak Dos backstage

Too much!!! Especially with the later stuff.

- Livestock, The Gutch, & Dawson prematch bit

Double duty for Heath… Livestock and Gutch stuff, but it just seems to glut an already full show.

- The Berserkers v. Livestock & Heath Dawson

Not sure what I’m supposed to be thinking here… no one really went way over, no one really lost heat, it just sort of took up space while building the Livestock/Gutch storyline.

- Fontana & Craven backstage

Interesting set up for later… but once again I’m holding off on further comment till later.

- Sinister, Senor Cloak Dos, & Spectre backstage

TOO MUCH!!! Okay, this show is glutted with segments and adding TWO separate segments for Sinister and SCD just to set up a LATER segment felt like overkill. I love the match set being set up, but I’m now glutted on Sinister for this show and getting sick of seeing him hang around chatting with younger stars. Do something!

- Christopher Black v. Erich Seiger

I wrote it, so will not comment on it. Suffice to say that I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the job I did… I felt like I rushed it a little after I reread it, but it could just be that I’m reading it in a swamp of other material.

- Kevin Quatermann backstage #2

Hey, Quartermann… I dig your stuff, really… but you should know that sometimes less is more. I don’t need to see several segments with you for two shows in a row. Especially when you’re basically doing the same thing over and over again, just using different tactics each time.

- Gibson Hayes prematch promo

Solid sell, solid build up, no complaints. Brief and to the point.

- Perry Fontana & Partner v. Gibson Hayes & Uncle Frank

Ooooh boy! Okay, this was a good match spoiled by one thing… which, once again, I’ll get to later.

- Kevin Quatermann backstage #3

3 times? Really?

- Rob Cole & Brian Young inring

Loved Youngs justification, but not sure how Cole is coming off… will wait and see.

- Johnny Detson v. Derek Weaver

Decent… good solid match. Should have ended the show here.

- Tradition VII announcements w/ Preston Winfield

This could have been done after the show with the release of the schedule… so, not so happy with it. Not bad, just not great… looking forward to T7.

AND NOW THE RANT:

In this cycle we have seen several sudden face turns. I know that one of the basic criticisms is that the fed does not have enough Faces, but the truth is that doesn’t mean the entire mid and upper card heels need to suddenly turn face as a reaction. A turn, whether Face or Heel, should have solid reasoning and should fit in with and be part of an over-arcing storyline that justifies the fans suddenly deciding to start cheering. And major turns should be important, not buried amidst an ocean of previous and current turns…. It shouldn’t be a trend. So here is my problem with this show: Too many face turns!

Watching William Craven don the mask was extremely anti-climactic after already seeing The Biz do the exact same thing a few matches earlier. Having the Dragon Kid pop up after a long hiatus would have had more meaning if we hadn’t just had a few promos explaining that Talion is wearing a mask because of some mysterious past. And then, having Johnny Detson suddenly being a face after having been such a heelish “President”-type character? It felt rushed when his story seemed more about that title shot than any catering to the fans. Add Fontana to the mix, though I think his was probably the best of the face turns in that he gave us humanizing elements during the previous cycles. It feels like people are rushing to fill a void with regards to a lack of faces in the upper levels.

Maybe I’m wrong, but there has been a lot of recent criticism in that regard and it’s actually not something I agree with. I happen to think there are plenty of Face characters who could be elevated. I do not believe in the argument that none of them are “at that level”. I think a good run from several of the current faces could be a big angle given the opportunity, especially if they’re considered the underdog.

Kind of a comment on both Heatwave and the Pickycast.

I think Picky's comments on certain things were spot on, but perhaps blown out of proportion. Whether this was Picky being frustrated by the day, tired, sick, all of the above or having just got a paper cut... whatever. I will say that he was at least talking, and that alone proves that he cares. Simply ignoring the show would be a bigger slap.

And I'm not being a-Picky-pologist. I just happen to have had a very similar response to the card(s) after my first reads. I attribute this to a few things.

A. I'm REALLY fucking tired the last few days. I'm working out really hard again, every muscle above my hips is sore, my daughter is teething, my son got stitches and that kept me up for almost 3 nights just worrying about it... and I still work 14 hr days. I was cranky as FUCK when I read my own stuff, upset at my lack of 'wow' factor in everything I touched. That translated to grumpiness towards everyone else. I know Picky being sick certainly didn't help his temperament.

B. Following a great card last time. TONS of stuff happened on both the cards ahead of this SW/HW combo. In addition to having one of the best RP packets I've ever seen, expectations were UNUSUALLY high for this. And for a pre-sorta-PPV show, that simply spelled disaster.

C. Segment avalanche. HO. Lee. Shit. That was a LOT of segments. Sinister is going to get a lot of blame, and he deserves some of it. Honestly, being loquacious is really only a good thing if you're comedic with it. Quartermann, too, had a little too much going on backstage. Hell, Flouze and I deserve our hands slapped as well. Weaver was on 3 times, Fontana was on 3 times... We, as a fed, need to keep our segmenting LOWER. Perhaps a subforum in here SPECIFICALLY for "backstage" stuff that you KNOW doesn't need to take up airtime, but needs to get there. Think of it as a "youtube channel" for PVW.

D. It's a pre-"PPV" type show. Many angles needed to get started/rolling/moved forward and that caused a lot more K than normal. Tradition will obviously set the table for Shattered Dreams at the end of the cycle and I think it'll put the next shows AFTER on cruise control.

It's for those reasons (and exhaustion) that I've not put out my normal review for the show. I could, at some point tomorrow, put one out and attempt to be constructive about it, if people are still clamoring for more reviews. The JC-view, if you will.

But until then... deep breaths, everyone.
