1967 ------ ** In the fall, St. Louis Wrestling Office promoter Sam Owens hosts a summit of wrestling promoters, pitching his idea for a worldwide alliance of promoters working together - the idea that would later become the International Wrestling Alliance 1969 ------ ** September - the IWA becomes a reality ** December - Bruno Moretti wins a 32 man tournament to become the first IWA World Champion 1974 ----- ** April - The St. Louis Wrestling Office threatens to pull out of the IWA over the IWA's decision to pull the Terry Shane Jr./Cameron O'Connor feud from the St. Louis territory and send it on the road. The IWA later decides to send The Giant Khan, "Pretty Boy" Petey Choice, Ronin Hashimoto, and a young rookie named Hamilton Graham to St. Louis to keep the territory in the IWA. 1975 ------ ** IWA invites Southern Championship Wrestling to join the alliance. 1976 ------ ** St. Louis promoter Sam Owens draws the ire of the IWA Board of Directors when he books his own talent in a Main Event match above the IWA World Title kicking off another period of time where it seems inevitable that St. Louis will break away from the IWA. ** July - The IWA hosts a multi-territory tag team tournament 1979 ------ ** New Year's Day - IWA World Title changes hands in Texas when Hamilton Graham defeats Cameron O'Connor on a PCW super card. 1980 ------ ** January - At the first meeting of the new decade, SCW promoter Jim Somers elected President of the IWA. On the second day of the meetings, a desperate Sam Owens approaches the Board of Directors, fearing that his promotion is on the verge of going under. He begs for their help and is given a six month exclusive period with World champion Hamilton Graham in an attempt to right the ship. Late 80s ------- ** IWA crumbling under pressure from nationwide promotions 1988 ------ ** Jim Somers outlines plans to convert SCW into the Worldwide Wrestling Alliance by purchasing all of the IWA territories. ** Labor Day - Jim Somers dies IWA TITLE HISTORIES IWA World Title ---- Bruno Moretti wins a 32 man tournament to become first World Champion - December 1969 The Mauler (later unmasked as Blackjack Patterson) defeated Moretti - September 1970 [GAP IN HISTORY] Patterson loses title in October '71 [GAP IN HISTORY] "Gorgeous" Johnny Most listed as champion in March '72 Terry Shane Jr. defeats "Gorgeous" Johnny Most - April 1972 Cameron O'Connor defeats Shane Jr. - March 1973 [GAP IN HISTORY] Hamilton Graham defeats O'Connor - January 1st, 1979 Terry Shane Jr. defeats Graham - June 30, 1980 [GAP IN HISTORY] Morgan Storm (listed as being champion, Memorial Day 1985) |
