Ok.. here we go. Hero Quest: We started with Hero Quest. This started it all for my junior-high friends and myself, and it was all my fault. I bought it as a birthday gift with money my aunt had sent me. While not as much an RPG as the rest of what is on this list, Hero Quest gave us the introductory tools we needed for years to come. The only downside is that due to this game, we were locked in on gaming with Minis and maps for a lot longer than we should have been. We loved the minis and the 3d cardboard furniture and tiles. The new D&D adventure games are nice... but nothing holds a candle to Hero Quest. Unfortunately the sets that are still floating around in good condition go for an obscene amount of money on eBay. Battle Masters: Battle Masters wasn't an RPG, it was basically an RTS board game. It also figured into our Hero Quest games for awhile. We would create our own hero quest "modules" and the Battle Masters game mat (Which was too big to fit on a dining room table, BTW) served as the overworld while the heroquest board was the dungeon. Each battle masters mat had about 4 or 5 dungeons we needed to clear to finish. We called it Battle Quest ![]() Dungeons and Dragons (16th Edition of the Basic D&D Rules) This is the game that introduced us to D&D, even though it was rather odd compared to Advanced D&D. Elf was your character. Not a Elven fighter/mage or a dwarven fighter. You played an Elf, Dwarf, Wizard, Thief or Cleric. Regardless, once we finished with this game and the 3 expansions, we moved on... Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, 2nd Edition: Majority of high school gaming was this game. We had so much AD&D 2E stuff it was ridiculous. Even got us into Spellfire. We were TSR Acolytes for sure. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, 1st Edition: After moving away for college I fell into a gaming group with an older DM who used the 1st Edition rules in her high school days so this is what we played. Was an interesting change of pace. Vampire: The Masquerade: I played in a VTM game for about a month, playing a brand new Ventrue who had to transport a cask of Caine's blood from coast to coast while keeping it safe from Werewolves, Mummies and the like. My defining moment in the game was when my character realized that he didn't really need his internal organs anymore and had my character sliced open, removing all of his internal organs except for his heart, and sliding the container inside his rib cage since carrying it out in the open was becoming a hassle. D&D 3E: d20 is my game. I never moved to 3.5. I will not move to 4 or 5E(which i got an e-mail about signing up to playtest since I had DDO in the past.) I DM'd 3E more than anything and have done more DMing than playing since it came out. Not because I want to, I'd rather play, but because I have to. I have almost all of the d20 Dragonlance books because TrollandToad had a big clearance sale on them recently and I got a lot of them for less than $5 a piece. I had quite a bit of Forgotten Realms and 3rd party stuff too, as well as the Eberron campaign setting. Farscape - d20: I only briefly was able to run a farscape game before people moved and no one else was interested. Buffy and Angel - Unisystem: The only game I've really gotten to play in the last 10 years. My friend ran it and I wanted to play something so i joined. It was fun, and gave me some really cool concepts. It had "Drama points" and suggested running the game as a TV season, broken up into Episodes. It's how I'll be running the game I'm planning right now, which i've talked to jer and Picky about - as a season of a TV show with 12 episodes per season. Engel: My buddy bought the books, was planning a game, but it never materialized. Monte Cook's World of Darkness (MCWoD) - d20: A d20 reimagining of White Wolf's World of Darkness that I think is amazing. has the best Magic system i have ever seen. Currently planning a game in this setting. (MCWoD Review Here) Dresden Files: Love the books, toyed with playing it, but opted for MCWoD instead, since I think the Magic System is more interesting to me and I am partial to the d20 system. |

Like Steinar, I got sucked in by Hero Quest. We played the minis game, which gave me the tools to get started. Then I was introduced to AD&D 2nd Ed. I never looked back. Aside from those, I did the White Wolf lineup. I was a fan of Hunter the Reckoning. Really thought the game was a great idea and could easily be used as an introduction to the OWoD. I really loved MtA. The guy who usually ran for me always did a weird mix of sci-fi fantasy. Mage in Space is what I'd call it. Vampire and Werewolf were fun. Truthfully, I played with such a die hard group it was hard to get past the metaplot and homebrew metaplot. Tried one Mage and Werewolf game in NWoD. Werewolf game was great, but only because of the storyteller. While they simplified the system, there seemed to be even more balance issues. Tried D&D 3.5 (currently playing in an E6 game which uses that). Wasn't a huge fan of it at first, but it grew on me. I like D&D 4E. The best way to describe it is pen and paper WoW. Star Wars d6, LOVE this game. First time I played it we had a starship battle with an X, Y, and Z axis battlefield. Talk about those great game moments. Chill has always been a favorite. Only run during Halloween, and the person who ran it never let any of us read the book to keep us in the dark. One indy game I really enjoyed was Conspiracy of Shadows by Keith Senkowski. Had a few good one shots. Never got a chance to run or play in Jason Blair's Little Fears. I do own the book. |

Huh lol I guess this would be a good tread to say that I own a gaming store in lol. I've been in business for about 2 years this month and sell various RPGs, CCGs and expanding to game workshop miniatures later this year. If anyone is looking for anything role playing wise, shoot me a message and I'll see what I can do about getting you a discount on product. |

Earthdawn...I have some of the books, but sadly, my group in high school wasn't "sword and sorcery" so much as "guns and spaceships." Lore was awesome, I would have loved to have played it. Ok, here's something that should come as NO surprise to anyone who knows me... ...in college, the guys in my fraternity and I would get absolutely blitzed. And play Toon.

I was briefly in an Earthdawn campaign. Unfortunately, the GM was a railroading dipfuck who was blatantly biased towards his wife's characters (And Wifey-poo HATED other women at the gaming table). |

Never tried Earthdawn. I've been in an X-Men Play by Email game for about ten years that I think is finally dying permanently, so unfortunately e-wrestling is right now my only RPG outlet. So if I start getting more obscure with my flashes... well, I'm jonesing ![]() |

He is...and could use some more players that he doesn't actively hate...'cause I think several of the players that have been there for a bit are about to be shown the door. |

1st or 2nd edition? I need to pick up 2E but I'd love to run a 1st edition Little Fears campaign. |

I haven't done any gaming in about 2 years. (Damn real life) I used to play: Serenity D&D (Ran 3.5, played 4th, 3.5, 2nd) Champions 4th ed. (I liked this game. I have many fond memories of games played in a friend's basement every Sunday) Werewolf, Mage, Exalted I also have All-Star Wrestling. We ran a federation for a few weeks until nobody could show up to play in the shows. Sad times. I started with 2nd Ed D&D and Marvel Super Heroes. Simple and fun. I miss being part of a gaming group. It's good social time. Something I rarely get anymore. But, I have comics to make and wrestling strats to write (maybe a good one, one of these days) so until another time, this is my outlet for gaming. |

I think I forgot Serenity in my initial list... wow. One of my favorites, too. I tried Earthdawn once, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I was sort of bored most of the time... maybe it was just the GM, but I couldn't get into the setting or the world or my character. And, unfortunately, I don't get to play characters too often... pretty much E-Wrestling is the only place I get to RP. That and conventions, but I'm usually playing a pregen someone else made. Ah well... I tend to run the majority of the games for my gaming group with the occasional one or two shot from someone else that I have trouble getting into. They never want to run a system that I'm actually wanting to play... 7th Sea? L5R? Solomon Kane?!?!! UGH!!! Everyone goes for the high fantasy setting or the generic WoD... and they also want to run "evil" games, without having the slightest clue what "evil" really means. |
