I am NOT gonna envy Dro & Picky when they do their respective podcasts (though, in Dro's case, if he wants to do a palate cleanser of what's gone down in Fighting Spirit first, I'd be cool with that. :D) |

Not to be a spoiler...but the next Cole and Young match is going to be Meat Grinder II! =) And yeah, I'd like to read a review of Fighting Spirit also... since I just had my new character debut! Woohoo! |

Here is my "day after, at work, what do I remember from reading it" review. I hate doing these because I'll be guilty of everything I criticize others for. -T7 Opening It's an opening. -One on One Match: The Mercenary v. Heath Dawson I really liked the style of this match, it was entertaining to read... too much with the "slept with your wife" jokes, but eh. The ending was totally abrupt and anticlimactic and that was the point... that was exactly what they were going for. Now, here's my quibble. If you're going to do that and have Dawson get his heat back after, give Merc some heat with the ending. Have him use the Haliburton and get intentionally disqualified, or get away with the Haliburton and then pin himself with Dawson. Merc's stuff this cycle was amazing, and I think he should have had his 'win' ending if Dawson was going to have his afterwards. I don't disagree with Dawson getting that postmatch pin, because he has an insanely high upside and you want him to build. -Tracy Hudson & The Biz backstage This made it clear as mud as to whether Biz is working people with the mask thing, but it seems very likely. -Gold Rush & Marcus Manson backstage Decent RP puts the match booking in question... before this, I was certain that Frank and Lineage would win. -Six Man Match: Marcus Manson & Gold Rush v. Uncle Frank & Lineage This was a good match, and the ending lets Berger avoid the dreaded "all my characters are buddies" Riemensnyder Stable Syndrome. Also, to quote Dro: "UNCLE FRANK HOLY MOLY RAVIOLI YOWZA!" -Japanese Superstar spotted in crowd spot I'll go ahead and reveal what this is, so more isn't made of it than it should be. That is Nenshou in the crowd. He's an AWA wrestler , whose contract has expired and his manager is trying to cut a plum deal for him in renegotiation. He's been threatening to go to the Phoenix territory, amongst other places... and now he's been seen on camera! So it has no bearing on PVW at all, and is really just a kind gesture by Brian to help me this way. And he isn't the only one who was kind enough to do that; Nenshou's going to be playing Waldo the next few weeks. I wanted to do this for two reasons: one, to tie our little shared universe together. And two, to troll Blue. :-D -Cow and Chicken backstage I don't really remember anything about it, other than it was there. And Moo's definition of hooligans, which was a nice line. -One on One Match: Tracy Hudson v The Biz Good match which put over both guys. -Lights Flicker-Message Spot N stands for Mr. Excitement Dropkick. Brian has confirmed this. -Shattered Dreams, Tag Team Title Announcement involving the Berserkers and Max and Sal Berserkers haven't yet made me care, but they haven't made me not care either. I have yet to form an opinion on them. In a way, that's not good. -Dean Hayes trying to get a word with HOPE backstage If he changed his name to Dean Quesada, he's have gotten in. -Fatal Four Tag Team Match: Cow and Chicken v. Legacy v. Sons of Anarchy v. The Heat I just couldn't get into this match, probably because I'm not into many of the characters. I like (but not love) the Heat and Legacy, and am somewhat ambivalent on the other two teams. So it kinda blended in with all the multi-person tag matches on the card. If you're going to have this many multi-person tags, why not just go Survivor Series and make a theme of it? -Rob Cole backstage This advanced the storyline and set up the match nicely. Cole is a guy who is all over the place to me. His best stuff is really good, and his worst stuff is really bad, and he can hit anywhere in that range at any time. That's just how I view him. The closer to the match we've gotten, the better his stuff has gotten. -The Mercenary & JFM backstage spot She was dumped in a wastebasket! The blackout was for (dark) comedy effect. That's Trev humor. I'm just more used to it. -One on One Match: Brian Young v. Rob Cole A very sensible match and perfect asshole ending. It really worked and made this far more interesting than the poison angle. I didn't care before the match, and now I do. -Chase Williams and Larry Gionet confrontation backstage I am trying to put my finger on why I didn't get into this segment. I like Williams, but something here didn't click. It felt like they just didn't have any chemistry with one another. The content wasn't bad, but it didn't link together well. It's hard to express this. -Perry Fontana and Sinister backstage OH NO IT IS A SINISTER BACKSTAGE RUUUUNNNNN NO PERRY DON'T DO IT AAAAAAAAHHHHH I kid. This segment was fine. Sinister's character totally works when it is in single doses like this. Says the guy who had five segments in one show cycle... this is why I don't review often! I always criticize things I do myself! -One on One Match: Derek Weaver v. Perry Fontana This was the right result for everyone involved, though HOW THE HELL DID THE REFEREE MISS THAT?! He wasn't distracted! -Senor Cloak Dos backstage After Flouze's last podcast, I laugh every time I see Dos use the phrase "mortal combat". There is an important thing to be said by Dos here, though. The other two guys really are treating him like a child, and he is not a child. -Adrian Freeman and Supreme Wright backstage Important setup for later tonight (and into the next day, and possibly the day after) -Six Man Match: Danny Daniels, Talion, & Kevin Quartermann v. Chance Holiday, Nevermind, & Whisper It was a bit of a train wreck. Somewhat like the four way tag match. It held my attention because I was in the match. Hope to see this set something up for Whisper. The Talion build continues; I think I know who he is, but my opinion has changed twice now. So good job on that. -Chris Hartt backstage Excellent short face promo. Keening-esque. -One on One Rebirth Rules Match: Sinister v. Spectre Ref: SCD OW. There were one or two "maybe-that-was-too-much" spots in here, but again, potkettleblack. The pencil would have been a great spot had it not been seen to be sticking out of Spectre's head. He'd be dead! On the plus side, Spectre's probably pretty happy with the state of Sinister's Beast. It was a very entertaining brawl, and I did get into it. -Post Match, Mystery Message and announcement This came too immediately after the match. There was no postmatch at all... just BOOM MESSAGE. Sinister wouldn't have heard that, he had an ass-kicking to sell. Wind it up, get Spectre out of there, let the announce team ruminate over what the consequences of the match was a bit more, and THEN the message. -PVW’s 2nd DVD Shill... Commercials add flavor and a sense of realism. -The Shattered Dreams Contract Sighing with Johnny Detson and Gibson Hayes No fight like you usually get, just Gibson baiting Detson into best 2 of 3 falls. That goes well with the storyline of Detson struggling with his self-doubt, and is brilliant tactically from Johnstone and Gibby. Detson has to overcome the self-doubt TWICE, and if Gibson wins one fall, OH NO NOT AGAIN sets in. It's the perfect stipulation for such a scenario. -Double Title Match: Herscher von Donkerhardt v. Uncle Frank v. Chris Hartt v. Christopher Black v. Adrian Freeman v. Supreme Wright v. Erich Seiger There was a metric ton of great stuff in this match. But it was WAY too long. Again, potkettleblack, and I clearly see WHY it was so long. A long singles match can develop a storyline that requires a match to go for some length (see: Cole-Williams or Craven-Marley). This match had MANY storylines, none of which required length but all of which required attention. (insert Picky yelling about the Damage bit not requiring attention here) Could this have been tightened up considerably? Yes. But when you get into the flow of writing a match, this is what can happen, so I can't be too critical about that. I foresee that some people are just going to get tired of reading this, have to read in bursts, and then just screw it and skip to the end. They'll miss a LOT of angle work and character development. Despite the length, this is The Match Of The Year So Far, and I am going to go get my sword and have a word with COB about this. (in case it comes up on a cognitive thinking test: "Uncle Frank is to Television Title as Jeremy is to ____________" is correctly answered "Match Of The Year Award". IT IS NOT NICE TO TRY AND TAKE JEREMY'S AWARD, CHRISTOPHER. NOT NICE AT ALL! IN FACT, IT IS QUITE RUDE, AND JEREMY DOES NOT APPRECIATE RUDENESS. JEREMY WILL HAVE TO HAVE A LONG, LONG, LONG DISCUSSION WITH YOU WHERE HE GOES INTO GREAT DETAIL ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF RUDENESS.) |

You're right. This match was LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG as hell. It's mainly my style of writing. When I write matches, I try to include several things... A light-hearted spot. A "well, he's dead" spot. And I try to ensure everyone has at least two "I'm awesome" spots and two "I'm getting my ass kicked" spots. Now, add into that SEVEN wrestlers, three managers, three run-ins, two announcers, and one referee...and my own naturally dense and verbose writing style. My initial run? In Microsoft Word? ONE HUNDRED PAGES. I cut it down to eighty five by the time I sent it. ![]() And, Jeremy? You keep talking about swords...ask Katie about 7th Sea and how I know a thing or two about the Swanson School... |
