Got a little bit of free time this morning before my mom arrives for a visit so I thought instead of getting too deep into matchwriting and getting cut off, I'd get too deep into review writing and then get cut off.

So, here goes...

First off, I want to say how sad I am that no one commented on my snazzy graphic to head off the show. I'll just assume you all missed it in your excitement to dig into the meat of the card.

I went with a pretty simple intro this time since I knew the show was going to be stuffed to the gills and didn't want to weigh it down at the start.

I like using outdoor stadiums during our summer tours as I think it adds a little something unique to them. Getting to use the bleacher... the scoreboard being part of the Control Center... interviews in the on-deck circle... all part of adding that little bit of something different to make it feel like it's not just your standard arena show.

After the talk about rain in the area that week, I decided to run with that too. Sprinkled throughout the show (pun intended) are some slight mentions of thunder or "threatening clouds" and the like. It was never going to be a big part of the show but again, having your show get rained on is something a little unique to add to the overall feel.

We've done it a couple times but I really like using the Battle Royal joined in progress at the start of shows. It gives the show an immediate kick while at the same time weeding out some of what makes a Battle Royal tough to write (and read) with the slow start.

I thought the Battle Royal provided some fun spots with some obvious stuff like Kingsley and Strickland working together. Alphonse being Alphonse. Supernova being the fan favorite who ALMOST gets it done. I knew I wanted Alphonse to win going into the match to keep the King Of The Battle Royal gimmick going. I thought Bryant's interference to eliminate Supernova played nicely into the idea that he'd want to make a big impact even after elimination and since Rob seems to want to have Bryant stick around for a while, that was a good spot to get some heat on him - no pun intended that time.

Good Monosso promo. Jer continues to put teasers out there that the Madman from Happy Valley ain't necessarily pleased about fighting for the "golden child" Nenshou which should be quite interesting to see come to a head.

Monosso/Carver was a difficult one to write. I knew the majority of the crazy stuff needed to be saved for Outlaw Rules and I didn't want to write something early in the show that would overshadow that in terms of nuttiness. That said, you guys expected this match to be a wild one so I didn't want to disappoint. I think I struck a decent balance though. One of my favorite spots in it is the Monosso Nestea Plunge off the Carver standing lariat. Really liked the visual of that one. I also liked the idea of Monosso arming Carver with a chair so that they could use them without getting DQd - kinda playing into the "no double DQs" thing.

Jer suggested kicking out of the Concussionizer which I was okay with because Carver's known as a tough guy and that made sense to me to give this match a big "oh shit" moment where you think that he just might pull it off. But the Descent Into Madness spells the end of it. INSIDER NOTE: Jer also suggested that Carver could kick out of that as well before being creamed with a K-Driller if I wanted to go that route. Obviously, I thought that was a bit too much so... yeah.

Fun match though. I kinda intentionally have opted not to talk to people about sticking around with their tourney characters unless directly asked about it but I think with a little bit of tweaking... Carver might be able to fit in the AWA after it's all said and done.

And then there's no love for my Travis Lynch t-shirt commercial either?! Grrr! You people!

The Greene Family Promo came up next. I dug it. Thought it nicely set up the Uncle vs Nephew showdown that they both wanted so badly to do in this tournament. I like both characters - never really been exposed to either of them but I thought they were both very strong characters.

The Vasquez/Stevie promo was next. I really, really loved this. As longtime Blue followers will know, I'm a sucker for angles and promos that reference older angles. So, the feud that many would argue built the AWA being called back to by these two coming together to address their current situations? Yeah, dug it a lot.

Next up was Greene vs Greene. I was really disappointed in the whole Flowers situation surrounding this match. It had been a long time since I'd worked with Steve at all and even longer since working with John so to have their match end up being my "last minute gotta hurry" writing assignment made me even more annoyed at Flowers. I really hope that it turned out worthy of those two characters.

MJV promo in the Control Center followed that - some nice references to his days in Tampa... again that's the kind of callback that I like. It would make sense for the Tampa crowd to react to Valentine considering his history in that territory so it would have been silly to not mention it in some fashion.

Bryant promo follows. Good stuff. I've always liked Bryant more than Donovan and Donovan has done very well in the AWA so this should be interesting to see how Bryant does. Also like the tease that if they don't sign him, he'll be looking to make an impact on the 14th.

Waterson/Zaire promo was next. I debated not doing this. I debated having Waterson so distraught about being out of the tournament that he just gave up on everything and went home. But I felt that the Vasquez angle couldn't really move past Waterson without him there to take his asskicking.

And that's all I've got time for right now.

Nice write up, it's neat to read your thoughts on the show from this perspective and more informative than a traditional review.

Carver in AWA would be a pretty interesting experiment for me. Even with just the one match I had to do a different promo than I normally would. Stratting would be way different than the usual stuff too.

The Greene Family Promo came up next.  I dug it.  Thought it nicely set up the Uncle vs Nephew showdown that they both wanted so badly to do in this tournament.  I like both characters - never really been exposed to either of them but I thought they were both very strong characters.

I just wanted to point out that I thought your edit on that promo helped a lot - it was originally written without Jason Dane involved, but adding him and having both men completely ignore him I think really added to the atmosphere. I'm assuming you did it to stick to a consistent style for backstage segments - we wrote it in the sort of modern WWE style of two guys and a camera backstage interacting, while what ended up on the show fit better with a late 80's NWA style of show much better, but in any event I think it came off really well.

As, of course, did the match itself, which got over the main thing I wanted to see - familiarity between the two, and an intense but still friendly competition. I never really got a proper chance for Brett to put over Colby during his last UWF run, and I figure I can count the number of times I'll put Brett back in the e-ring on one hand at this point, so I'm glad this one turned out well.

Probably. I had written a piece of Part 2 and then somehow deleted it so I haven't gone back to revisit it yet.

Okay so after a long break in between it's time for part two of my First Tangle in Tampa review. I want to thank everybody for their patience while we got the last show out and I was able to get some time to work on this again. So where we left off last time was with the Waterson and Zaire promo.

Up next, we have the Whitecross and Pure X backstage promo. I always enjoy getting the chance to see Martin and Bren work together and every time we have Whitecross on any show, you think that this could be the last time so it's cool to see what he can still do with this character that's been around since the late 90s.

For those who remember the Langseth and Whitecross days in the E, this obviously has a special callback to that. Whitecross, of course, was Langseth's mentor when Bren really first started in the EMWC and with Pure X as his nephew it added that little something special to this match I thought.

Their match was up next. When I first asked Martin if he would be a part of the tournament, this was the match that I suggested doing. He quickly accepted and I knew that this is going to be something special. I already mentioned my feeling that I'm not the best technical wrestling match writer in the world so when Jer offered to write a match, I knew he was the perfect fit to do this one. He's one of a few that I would trust to treat Whitecross with the same respect that I would.

Gabriel Whitecross has always been a special character for me. He was one of the first "original" characters that I had in the E that nobody really knew a lot about at that point. And when he really took off after that first run I was really proud of what we're able to do together. Martin seems to think he's nearing the end of his Whitecross days so if that's true, I'm glad we got another shot to work together even if it was for a short period of time.

Pure X has always been a bit of a mystifying character to me. I've never been able to really get a good grasp I felt for how I wanted that character come off either in the ring or out of the ring. Bren and I had conversations about making him sort of like a Bret Hart character but that doesn't quite seem to fit either. Even after this match which I thought was really well done, I'm still not quite sure I have a handle on Pure X quite yet.

From there, we went to a Ryan Martinez promo. Ryan Martinez obviously got added to the tournament based off the Petrow and Langseth angle in Fighting Spirit. When I saw the job that John had done with that match, I knew that Ryan would make a good fit for the tournament. However, I thought the promo came off very flat - there didn't seem to be a whole lot behind it. And I knew that it was going to be very difficult for Martinez to get past Gaines in this round. Anglewise, it felt like Martinez advancing was better but I just couldn't bring myself to do it based off the promos.

From there, we went to the Gaines promo. Curt Kipp and I have not had the best of luck working together in the past. We've had a few chances to work together but it's never seemed to click yet. We were both hopeful that this time would change our luck and so far I think we're on the right path.

From the announcement that Ryan Martinez was going to be in the tournament, we all knew that he would have to interact with Craven at some point. When I realized that Martinez was going out in the first round, I knew it had to be now.

I thought the match was a lot of fun and I thought it was a good intro for both characters to the spotlight of the AWA. Having Craven attack Ryan after the match was a lock... what I wasn't sure about was having someone make the save. I didn't want to use Supernova for that role because I think we're moving away from that. I was going through some different options in my head when I decided that Gaines trying to make the save made a lot of sense... but it equally made sense for him to fail to keep Craven as this big unstoppable savage beast.

The TCR/Jack/Macht promo was up next... more for comedy's sake than anything else.

After the break, we had a Bishops promo. I know Dan was really enthused about the idea of Cletus Lee breaking his silence in this promo but I thought that also came off a bit weird. Couldn't really say why but hulking, savage Cletus Lee being able to communicate in full sentences bothered me.

Hamilton Graham promo was next. My main goal in this was trying to explain away the storyline discrepancy that we created on the last SNW... I think I managed to do that.

The Sharif/Bathwaite promo to follow set up some more tension between the Count and the Sultan over their respective feelings towards Graham which would, of course, pay off after that match.

Terry did a good job with the match even if it was a little shorter than I expected. Sharif advances with a little more trouble brewing with his manager.

Cooper's promo is next. I have to admit. I love this angle with Cooper. The idea of Cooper winning the World Title just hangs over the entire tournament like a dark cloud. By this point, you've practically got EVERYONE begging for someone to eliminate him just to prevent that from happening.

PART THREE STILL TO COME...

Funny thing about Pure X is that I always thought he wore a mask like Mr. Wrestling II.

Now I think of him as CM Punk, just based on the whole "Pure" thing, like it's straight edge or something.

And I would've wrote a longer match if you specified how long it should be. ie..."Terry, I want 20k...WRITE IT."
