Yeah, I was as shocked as you are.

PART THREE...

"Playboy" Ronnie D.

Sigh.

It was not an easy decision for me to ask Ronnie if he wanted to participate in the tournament. While I knew it was a "holy shit" kind of moment, I also know the reputation that comes with the character and I "fondly" recall the difficulties I had with Ronnie in the past.

Buuuuuut... time heals all wounds and I thought it was worth a roll of the dice.

Some of you are quite aware that with mere days (maybe hours) until the show came out, I had not received promos from either Ronnie nor Casanova's handler. At that point, I reached out to some whose opinions I quite trust and asked for advice on what should happen in the event that neither sent anything in. There were a lot of interesting scenarios floated but ultimately, Ronnie got something in at the very last moment and saved me from making that choice.

I liked the promo from Ronnie... thought it served its purpose well. I know that Ronnie's had trouble writing for this tournament - partly because it's been FOREVER since he had to and partly because he's used to having an angle to play a part of and thus far, we don't have one for him.

More on Ronnie in a bit...

Glenn Hudson... and yes, I have trouble not calling him Wug... was next on our screens to talk about the rematch with Rex Summers. It's been an interesting experience to see the return of Hudson after several years away. I have to admit, I'm intrigued to see where this Hudson/Bryant thing goes. I have a thought surrounding the Longhorn Title that may develop in the months ahead that I'm not quite ready to reveal at this time but... yeah. This feud might go a long way to determining if my thought is the correct course.

Now that I've thrown some mystery and intrigue out there...

We move on to D vs Casanova that Jason wrote for us. I edited quite a bit because that's what I do these days. I dug the match though. I thought it got across the psychology of Casanova getting caught up in the fans actually cheering him for once. I actually think Casanova could have a heck of a run as a face someday and I'm hopeful Mike can get back on track with him because he's a fun character with a lot still to do.

Donovan promo. What can you say? Rob continues to impress with his Donovan work like he has since Day One in the AWA with him. It's a far cry from the days in the E where Donovan would have days where he looked like a future World Champion and days where he looked like he should be posting his promo on an AOL message board with colored fonts and ASCII... oh. Oh, shut up.

Summers promo. I really enjoy writing for Summers and think in the right hands, he could be a top guy. I'm not the right hands for it despite Kolya's World Title reign.

Summers/Hudson rematch was next. I think these two characters click very well together and I had a lot of fun writing both of their matches so far. I toyed with the idea of the feud continuing in some fashion and doing a 30 minute Iron Man between the two ala Rude/Steamboat. But in the end, I liked the idea of Bryant/Hudson a little bit more.

Cooper/Donovan came next. I took a little creative liberty and wrote some stuff for Cooper there at the beginning of the match. I liked the idea of Cooper just kinda taking over during the break and refusing to "go along with the script." Of course, that leads to Donovan storming the ring fittingly and the match is on.

I have this thing about Donovan matches. My brain always tells me they should be on the shorter side even when their placement on the card should have them longer. I think my brain looks at a character who is over seven foot, over three hundred pounds, and in the waning days of his career and thinks... "Man, Kevin Nash shouldn't wrestle more than ten minutes anymore."

The Bishops run-in has been in my mind since MDM. I put in the line at MDM about Cousin Bo "making an offer Watkins couldn't refuse" with this moment in mind. It gives Cooper another cheap win to make him look less and less like a worthy World Champion. It gives Donovan an excuse for the loss. And it puts a ton of heat on the Bishops which is good since the tag division seemed kinda dead there for a while.

Which of course leads to the backstage promo where Watkins is upset, the Bishops are gloating, and Donovan is enraged... obviously you saw the next stage in that a few days ago.

From there, we have Jon Stegglet's announcement of Blood, Sweat, and Tears being the name of the Labor Day show and SuperClash IV being in Los Angeles. Oh, and Empire Sports is obviously involved in both. There has been plenty of chatter in my inbox about what this means. As Vin Scully might say while watching the third base coach flashing signs, "That could mean something or it could mean absolutely nothing." I just haven't decided yet.

And that leaves us with Outlaw Rules.

Outlaw Rules - especially when done with no ref - is a tough one to write. First off, you have to come up with a finish that is practically unthinkable because you have to render someone so incapable of continuing that it seems like a satisfying conclusion without a pin, ten count, any of that stuff. And typically, you have to do so without completely burying the opponent. We had a little more leeway in this one since we knew Zaire was taking time off after the match.

Writing a match like this in the AWA is interesting because you have to do hardcore without doing hardcore. There are some nasty spots in here... some brutal weapon stuff... but still nothing completely out of character for the AWA in my opinion.

Of course, the story of the match was twofold. Zaire is an unstoppable beast who just kept going. And Vasquez was progressively getting more and more violent in his desperation to fell the Botswana Beast. I think we managed to tell both stories very well.

Oh, and Waterson took his beating as well.

All in all, it was a solid show, I thought. The structure being mostly tourney matches made it a little different from the typical AWA supercard but on the whole, I thought it worked pretty well.

I've written for some places that made those goofy old AOL e-feds look pretty good!

The first place I ever took Donovan, for instance, where the guy running the place released a "pay scale" and, in one fell swoop, he and "Bad Eye" McBaine became multi-millionaires. Boosh!

I had a pretty shaky restart with Donovan but I think that was mostly rust. Oddly, considering that he was the first character I ever created (albeit one that started with a different name...and one that maybe was a direct ripoff of Kevin Nash on inception...) I'm pretty sure I have a far better grasp on him now than I did in 1996. That probably isn't unusual, but it seems sort of funny that we create these entire identities and have to "get to know them" like we do actual people sometimes.

EDIT: I'm also digging the hell out of the Cooper angle, that sword of Damacles hanging over the head of every wrestler left in the tournament and every employee of the AWA? Pretty damn awesome.

I'm hoping the Bryant/Hudson upcoming stuff works. I've been enjoying what I've written for Bryant, which is why I wanted to keep him around after the tournament, so I'm happy this is happening. Plus, Dave can still wrestle for more than ten minutes without breaking something! >.>

Rob doesn't have a single character left in the world title tournament. That seems wrong to me.

I hope you keep doing these for every show (sure, it creates more work for you!) but it gives a nice insight to how you see the fed and what works/doesn't work. I think it will make for less editing by yourself down the road!

Didn't I have a flash on this card? I could _swear_ I did.

Damned computer problems. My fileserver doesn't like pdf files. :/

Edit: Got it to load! Hey, there it is! No review for Craven? Uh-oh, Blue must've hated it~!
And it was at this moment that the entire world realized, in unison, that tandem bicycles were AWESOME~!
